View Full Version : Textures from around the world

We have a future texture CD/s coming out and the topics are 'textures from around the world'. So we thought this could provide some fun oportunaties for artists to get snapping and make some extra cash at the same time.
We require photos of textures from every corner of the globe that are specific and unique to your region. So if you have a good eye for photography and have a good digital camera, we are offering US$4 per photo (unedited) that we choose. We will be selective with your photos but we are aiming to get around 600 textures that will be used to make CDs. So the best idea is for you to take a large range if possible so we may choose the ones we want. Remember we just want the raw photos so you dont have to do any post work at all, just take good photos! We are going to do all the seaming, bumping, balancing etc.
When taking photos:
1. Photos should have no hard shadows we find bright overcast days are best.
2. Individual textures need to cover a certain area for example, bricks, tiles, slates etc would need to cover at least 10 bricks wide by 10 bricks tall, what we are saying here is close-ups are no good as they do not repeat as well when tiles.
3. Photos of cobbled roads or walk ways need to be taken with enough surface area as possible
4. Image size should be 2048x1536 (3 million pixels)
5. Photos need to be in perfect focus, blurred ones are no good
6. When taking photos you need to keep in mind ‘Will this tile well’ for example if there is very strong detail in just one area it would repeat badly and not tile well , same goes for very uneven lighting and colours.
7. Photos should also have no specular highlights on them if at all possible.
click here for examples (http://www.3dtotal.com/forum/ttex_job/ttex_job.asp) Make sure you click the images to see the full picture so to understand what we mean.
8. You need to be as close to 90 degrees to the surface as possible (this means photograph it straight on rather at any angle)
So no matter where you live, if you are interested please get in touch and email me at chrisp@3dtotal.com and tell me who you are, where you live and the sorts of type of texures you think you can capture for us from your area!

Hey, great.
Sadly I dont have a very good digi-cam. :( It has only 2.1 million pixels.
Tell me if this size would be ok... I would be really glad if I could do some photos. :)

If you want unedited photos, but want them at 2048x1536, should larger ones be cropped?
Fusion

Sweet Deal!!
But isn't there a theme to this? Usually you have certain textures on a CD (last one was all cars) so are you looking for anything specific this time?

cool...very nice idea indeed.
I can't wait to go out tomorrow and take lots of photo....(for once living in italy might help me!!!)

TheOne - sorry have to say no for now and see what other response we get, if it isnt much then we will get back to you.
Fusion - themes we may have are just 'continents' they came from, so there isnt any retrictions, but something like a plain concrete wall for example is no good as it could have come from anywhere. Surfaces which are either natural or manmade but are more specific to your area are what we want. For example we recently went to spain and photographed some lovely tiles, walls and roof slates that had a definate 'spanish' look to them. Just to contradict myslef though, if you can capture some excellent surfaces that really are beautiful textures, like an old weathered hand made fence just for an example, we will still consider buying it from you even though it could of come from any region as we have some other texture projects on the go too!
Many thanks
Tom

Just want to clarify on something, do you want scenery shots? or close up wall type shots?
I don't have a decent digi cam so i won't be able to help, but maybe my question is on the minds of some others :)

the only reason why we have put down 3mill pix is, that is what we use here in the studio sometime even higher and we find that setting gives a better quality and a larger image to work with, but yeah send in a few examples please

Hey, I think I'll find something good here:)
Now it's just my camera skills bothering me, but I got it just for 3d, so I'll need to learn it earlier, or later.
I think I may send in a testphoto when I've done one, don't I? (Currently raining here, so it's not good, yet:D )
there are some textures in my website, yes i know it's not as good as the 3dtotal tex cds. but i'm not pro
i hope you like it! link (http://gbr.design21.hu/textures.htm)

this sounds good and no mexican yet...
I live in a port so sand and ocean are all over as well as some nice textures to picture.
One question you say you want raw fotos you mean raw format? I can take'em in that format but is that right?
Chrisp-3DT
24-08-2004, 10:03 PM
hi serial
the format of the textures should be jpg, the reason we have said unedited is that we just need the photos from you and we seam them and make the bump maps
What about This.
I got around 100Pictures that i can make Tilable and make DIF and Bump map and durt maps.
http://home.publishnet.nl/~pvermaas/wood1_prom.jpg
i got lots of wood and stones and walls also got some good ref material for Japanisch/chinees Old Buildings. and stone walls. iam working on getting more metal skins. but i need to find time to go to the Scrap heap
if you want to hear more from me about this textures Mail me at

Rinne - yes send in a test
gbr - nice textures but dont really sing out they are region specific, also there are a couple of problems we mentioned before, sunlight/shadows on one of them, not enough surface area (stand back a bit from the subject) and i noticed an occaional blur creeping in on some (maybe a tripod would help this)
duce - I think you have missed the point a little, we want to do all the editing, we are just after raw unedited photos of region specific textures.
Everyone else - Glad to hear from you we are looking forward to seeing your shots!

We are in the process of sorting out server space for the chosen images to be uploaded to which will be a lot easier than sending them by post but thats up to you.
For us to choose your photos you need to send me compressed examples which should be around 640px by 480px or samller but they have to be big enough for us to see detail (no cropped images please) via email or by giving me a link to where i can view them, but if you wish to send them to us on cd, email me and i will send you our address
If you have any more questions please email me or put up a post.
Thanks again
Chrisp

Hi just a quick update
the deadline as so many people have been asking is set for 2 weeks so we need to have images sent to us by the 12th september which is a sunday. If you can send in your images a described in my earlier post
here a quick reminder of my post -

I would make a photo suggestion: snow. I think it's quite region specific. Anyone in snowy region should give it a try. It's pretty hard to get a good snow photo, especially whitout too much shadow in it. I'd give it a try myself, but 1) I dont have a good digicam and 2) it's not winter yet where I live :(

12 th septemeber is so damn close!...I wanted to go to Rome to take a couple of photos of Sanit Paul Cathedral and all the ancient roman side of the city....never mind...
now a question that springs to my mind:Should we specify the sources of our photos?eg. this photo was taken at XXX. from the Church of Saint yyy....I think it would be right to identify where the photos were taken.. (just my idea)

Profane - 2 weeks isnt a deffinate deadline, this project will run for quite a while longer, just wanted to get people moving! I really think you should make that trip! We will wait :)
Thanks

Like in all latin countries, I guess! lol
Where in Italy are you from? I've been in the Alpine region of Italy twice, but I really want to visit the whole country seriously, though. As in, go see Rome, Milan, Venice...
I agree with your idea: maybe we should all add a text or something explaining where each pic was taken from.

im curius in what kind of picture y prefer, the thing is thats there are millons of posibilitys so maybe a guide of things that you want to include in the cd can help, for example stones, wood, backrounds, this things are common so i don´t know. Maybe you want something different, something special. I´m waiting for my new camera, it´s only 4 mp so i hope can help with the size, i don´t remember de limit of the picture size. Sorry if my enlish is not so good..... so i´m just waiting here in Buenos Aires to go and take lot of pictures.

Your textures look really good Ecleposs. If you could take some similar ones following the guidlines then we would buy them from you. In particular the image size needs to be a lot bigger (see initial post for details) and also we want them unedited as we have specific techniques for doing the balancing and seems ourselves, but the subjects look great :)
Thanks
