Andy,

now that I read back through my words they seem to be silly obvious statements, of course you know the forum has taken off - I intended it more as a complement, it is a forum I am really enjoying participating in.

I will spend a bit more time studying my English before I post something next time.....

Ok here is my second model for the challenge. Thes are my mums glasses with her cool clip-on sunnies thingies..lol

Time to model 40 almost done 3ds max decided it wanted to corupt my file so i start again. cause being a speed challenge i dont save often. and all the autobak files are corupt too.

Time to model second time round 45min.
Texturing and rendering way too long was playing round for ages to get that dirty look on the lenses right.
The final render took 48 min I know this sounds like a long time but you try blending 2 raytrace materials together and see how your system handles it.

Over all not really that happy with the final render due to the fact that the shadows of the arms dont show up when looking through the lense. But its 2 in the morning and i gotta be up for work at 6.30 so i wont have time to post untill after the challenge is over..

Sniper

And the playdough version..

P.S. aww by the way i worked out a really good way to make nice reflective lenses Use a blend material with chrome in one slot and clear glass or something see through in the other slot then just adjust the levels so that the chrome is about 50% transparent..Hope this makes sense as im pretty tired and dont even know what im talking about....

Happy modeling night all.....Sniper....

I would never wear these

modeling: 48 min (all spent on the design)
texturing, scene setup, stealing HDRI Image, rendering, etc.: 1 hr

hulk22k this competition is over on the 8th september at 2200 GMT according to the first page rules layout.
i don't know which part of india you are in but i would guess you are 4 hours or 5 hours ahead so you actually have untill about 2 a.m on the 9th september your time.
there is a thread for a gmt conversion page here. so check out your local time and how many hours ahead of GMT you are

Put every available minute in the model, but just noticed that the glasses are too far apart from each other in the final render, so couldn't change it :P

Well, dunno if one could wear it, but I think it's possible, just should have left out all those stuff in the middle :P

Hola mi familia. Which means... Hello my family.

Well... I made it through Hurricane Frances!!! I'd like to thank H20 for sending some luck my way... I'm glad you don't have to go through what I went through, thanks to prats for wishing me all the best... it really helped keep the winds down! Special Thanks goes to the_bully for keeping New York's Heart Alive! Last but not least Andy and the rest of the forum for being a great bunch of guys that help each other be better at what they like doing... and still manage to have fun doing it. (Even if some people do manage to annoy Andy along the way... )

And now for my model:

3D Studio Max 6 (modelling, assembly )
Photoshop ME (.jpg compression)

Modelling time: 50 minutes (A lot of time just spent on tweaking and undos... :D )
Texture and Lighting time: a couple hours
Rendertime: don't remember... but it was pretty quick (Mental Ray)

Thanks, the map is a raytrace material with an hdr map in the "enviornment" slot, and a noise map in the "noise" slot, I cranked up the reflection and brought the specular down to widen the "light" area. I hope it looks like wet concrete, because that is the look I was going for.

Hello - missed last week's challenge but back for this one. Now I need to find the time to look through all the entries! not easy on my dial-up connection.
My Entry: Modelling in MAX3 in 50mins. Texturing 20mins. Had the idea of incorporating a visor into the frame to give better sun protection. (might be difficult fitting them into a case though). Didn't do any preparitory work so spent a lot of the 50 mins just tweaking so not much detail here - Used this head as a template (from 3Dtotal) building the sunglasses around it. rendered in a few seconds.

For all of you who sit there and watch the forum clock...WHEN ANDY SAYS IT'S OVER, THEN IT'S OVER. Stop watching the clock since you missed the sticky telling you about the difference.

On a personal note: I hope week 13 gets announced before I leave work today...I can't get online at home.

the contest results are currently posted at the end of the weekly challenge amd eventually (when time permits) images will be added to the gallery.

now the smart ones amongst you will have noticed that there are no results posted for last weeks challenge - there is a very good reason for that - I've been enjoying a week of relaxing and doing very very little. The kids are back at school after a 6 week summer break and the weather has been absolutely spectacularly good - so being as I live right on the coast it's been a time to enjoy the tail end of the summer.

Panic not, the results for last week will be posted this evening as will next weeks challenge.

Yo, great entries yet!

Here's my one; my last one probably for al long time; school has started, so I've to invest more time for school & less for 3D... :(

Making such sunglasses are more hard to do then you'd think... So it's a really good subject; in this way I still learn something! :) BTW: this sunglasses are remodelled from one my brother has :)

- 3Ds Max 5.0
- VRay Free
- Photoshop 7.0
- CorelDRAW 9.0

- Modelling: 50 min
- Shading time (no textures used at all): 1 hour
- Shading tweaking: 2 hours
- Rendersetup: 30 minutes
- Rendertime:
. - Beautyrender: 7h52 (@ 800x600) (but still bad antiallaising :( )
. - Clay render: 5 minutes

Beautyscene is rendered in VRay with skylight (GI) and one specular light.

Ok, here are the 2 renders! I hope you'll like them!

Congrats to all the winners :)

The week 12 models were a good show, especially since the materials and lighting had a bigger role to play than the modelling.

Well done, everyone!

no, only the winners can use these awards, unless we use your image in the gallery (which is still under construction :))

no they didn't, you weren't involved with the judging so why do you feel as though you are qualified to make such coments?

Points were awarded for modelling and were judged under various criteria which included;- quality of mesh, realism, wearabilty, design etc.

It's a modelling competition not a rendering competition so why should the quality of materials and lighting be more important than the modelling?

I've linked to the finished images this week rather than the clays for a reason which will become apparent when we launch the next challenge in about 30 minutes.

Of course, this challenge is based on modelling.

What I meant by saying that 'the models were a good show especially since...........' was that they were cool to see, in all those shades, and those environments etc.
I didn't mean that the results were based on the final output. Sorry if it sounded that way.

....just that the models of this week were a sight to behold compared to the other weeks.

Edit: had to edit coz I'd clicked on the 'quote' button in the previous post by mistake :D

Hello ,

i just wonder what was the judging criterias, cause i dont really understand what was really special with some models in the honorable mention ;)
follow the link
http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=239557

is it the modeling or the rendering or the creativity?, this will help ppl to make things better ;)

Hope Andy can explain us that !!

Nobby, I'd say those are creative enought to earn an honorable mention, like mr.glass's flower speakers in week 4...Just copying an image on google isnt always the best course. Using your imagination is the key, and sometimes (depending on the quality) it pays off

I just thought it was a clever use of the idea - calling them "pimp" was one thing but making the nose rest from the dice was a great touch

Okron,
Thank you for the answer, but i dont really understand where it's notified that the idea is the great criteria for the challenge, it's true that all my entries are inspired from reality or google images as you said, but most entries for challenge week 12 are similar to images found in goole, must i understand that the complexity of the models doen't count?

"(depending on the quality) it pays off", do you mean the rendering? maybe i didn't understand the rules enough!!!!!! because for some entries , it's not justified.

Thank you all

I'm not saying it has to be original to win, I haven't made an original design yet I don't think, and I won week 4. I meant that that particular image got an honorable mention probably because it was original...And Mr.Glass won for his original speakers a while ago...just do your best...just cuz you don't win (or get mentioned) doesn't take away from the fact that this forum is a tool to learn new techniques. I haven't been mentioned for a while either...it sucks, but I'm not quitting.

nobby, whilst you are obviously upset you didn't get a mention have you considered there may just be at least one reason why you didn't?

possibly not, so let me enlighten you -

1, Read rule 8 before you post images that are 800x900

2, your first post (mentioned above) was in your own words not your best work, my opinion was that the frame looked wrong and the curves weren't even, the joints between the frames and the arms looked as though there was no hinge and the lenses in your "sunglasses" weren't tinted

3, your secvond image fell into a similar trap - no hinges on the arms when you can clearly see a joint

4, your third entry the womens sunglasses had frames that were uneven (again) and some of the diamonds look as though they are not actually connected to the frame

5, your last post - once again in your words "i don't really like it" well, neither did I, in fact I thought it was one of the weakest models entered this week and I wondered why you posted it.

May I suggest that for future challenges you apply the same exacting standards you expect from others to your own work and rather than using these forums as a place to rubbish other people's work drop me a line privately and ask "why didn't I win?"

Believe it or not we try and judge these challenges fairly and with open minds, applying the same criteria to every image. Not one of your submissions was good enough to win, maybe in future they will be only you can decide that.

Wouldn't it be awful though if you entered something that you thought was great, was then awarded a prize or mention only to be singled out by a relatively new user as not being good enough?

Try and give some consideration to others and get your own house in order before you start criticising others.

If you want to carry on this discussion have the decency to do it in private - any further posts on the subject by you will be deleted and will disqualify you from all further challenges - i'm sorry we don't have room for bad losers here :)

=)) Do you really think it matters where people come from, related to winning this contest? LOL

>>Hey - I'm from Germany this week I'm up to win, coz I'm a damn cute bavarian dude =))) <<

The answer on your second question is implemented in the name of the party we're celebrating here: speed MODELLING contest.

It shall be no offense at all (not concerning you - hulk22k nor anyone else) but sometimes I wonder how some people find another silly question again & again to bother poor Andy with -
and at the same time shouting "can't wait anymore to see the winner - pleaz quicker, quicker!!!"

Once again - I really don't want to attack or harm annyone - PEACE !!! - but I guess we all got a thing called brain in our heads, so why not using it sometimes... =)

cheers

some people have too much confidence (goes some times very up).& it becomes over confidense.this will make fall down the man in the valley.means people find the valley of gold & very happyness make them to fall down in it.(EDIT : moral of famous gujarati proverb "Khado khodyo ne pote padyo")

i don't mean to hurt anyone.(As always ppl says at the end.ahhh!!)

it doesn't matter where you come from, location isn't part of the judging process.

It's quite simple, follow the rules and the brief, enter a model that is better than the rest and you'll win if it's not, then you won't - sounds easy doesn't it?

Good luck

Andy
