View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr 5!!!!
Michael
05-09-2004, 02:17 PM
This week we think - vehicles.
The challenge is about designing the racing vehicle from the year 8042, so AGAIN it can be anything - from chariots pulled by Henamurgns ( strange creatures, that are similiar a bit to dogs and a bit to rabbits ;) ) to one-man capsule, that is being shot from a cannon-like device and is equipped with a rocket engine.
The racing can take place on the ground, in the air, in space, under water, inside the planet.... It can be team racing, it can be one-man racing, it can be interrracial racing - alien with man. Anything that may come into your mind.
The work should include full shot of the vehicle and the driver - either inside it or stanging next to it ( the second one is preferred ).
For the ambitious ones - you may show the vehicle DURING the race - on the track, driving/floating/swimming etc. with great speed. :D
Deadline is usually - Sunday the next week - 12:00 GMT +01:00.
Let your imagination flow, have fun and....
GO!!!

Ummm...maybe i can draw somethin that will fit here...vehicle design is always a good practise

...can't hold out any longer....gotta have a go at these painting challenges...
..This is just a quick sketch, outlining the basic shape of the vehicle.
Doesn't show to much of the overall shape so i'm working on a perspective shot with my driver/rider standing infront.
For my driver, I think i'm going to go along the lines that humans have developed a reptilian skin through evolution, so my driver will be a chick, but of the lizard variety....just hope i can pull it all off.
...Right heres a taster..:)

Keep on going, man, looks OK. :)

Muahahahahaa...What a great topic! (most probably we'll need to hit the "repeat" button)
So many posibilities...damn, this I'll take the whole week:p
smallpiece
07-09-2004, 05:35 AM
..I know the main focus here is on the vehicle, but I got carried away with my driver and spent 8 hours getting it to its allmost complete stage, which I don't think is to bad since i've only done 2 digital paintings before:) ...
heres what i've got so far..I'm now working on the final vehicle image, which i think i've sussed out, just:roll:
what do you think of the driver, I'm not to sure on the helmet, but it seems to fit the image..
Michael
07-09-2004, 12:47 PM
Wow, smallpiece, that is reaaaly nice. Sweeeet. :D My only concern is how would you fit them together with colour ;).
David - what did you mean by this - "(most probably we'll need to hit the "repeat" button)"?
David Ciprian
07-09-2004, 12:48 PM
Do the topic again soon :D
Michael
07-09-2004, 03:56 PM
Heh. Probably, but right now I want to avoid repeating the topics. We will probably repeat some of them, but right now I want to see which ones will be the most popular. For now I think there will definitelly be some character design speedpaintings, but a lot of topics are untouched, so it's gona be in a while. ;)
I also want to do a brainstorming ( like I did before ) - what do you want to speedpaint.
smallpiece
07-09-2004, 08:31 PM
..Thanks for your comment Michael:)
I was going to leave colour out altogether, just pencil sketch both at once, but thought i'd test myself using photoshop.
I guess when I paste her onto the main pic there'll be some spots to tidy but the biggest problem I'm having at the momment is the colour scheme of the vehicle:roll:

Almost completed vehicle (almost 2 hours in PS - I dunno what took so long). Nothing original in a hoverbike but I painted the first thing that camed to mind :p
Hey Michael,
If you want some ideas for the speed challenges, here are some areas I would like to work on.
Scenery (e.g. landscape, Lake, Mountains, Cliff, Galaxies)
Rune buildings
Characters (young and old) (realistic/cartoon styles)
Scene props (e.g. flowers, trees etc)
Animals
Vehicles
Mech robots

David, thats cool, almost look like 3d.:)
Nice start David.
Its crazy I started on a hover bike too!
Although I was thinking of doing a big air ship like in Final Fantsy 7 or a starship for a galaxy le mans.
Michael
08-09-2004, 08:24 PM
David - realy good start :).
ROB - there's a separate thread for the speedpainting brainstorming here in the subforum :) ;). I pasted your post there as a quote :)
yeah, sorry just realised that after the post :o

David Ciprian
09-09-2004, 06:51 PM
Thanks everyone. I guess I'm finally getting to handle PotoShop :)
Mia: my vehicle took little over 3 hours, you should be able to find at least just as much time to make yours.
the problem is im not really good with vehicles and electronic things :) ... you will see what i mean with when i do mine

I also find tech hard to reprezent in digital painting ( uh..actually I find everthing hard to paint in a 2d software ). I wish you good luck !
smallpiece
09-09-2004, 08:20 PM
..Thanks Mia, I've certainly found this a 'challenge'. Everytime I've been happy with my final piece I've gone back and tweeked it a bit more...but i'm just about ready to post it now, just adding the finishing touches......and i still think i've missed something:roll:
Hey guys,
Here's my bike so far, as you can see it could do with something more but I've got a few more ideas to go on to it.
At the moment I'm working on the character a young adolescent biker dude with some attitude!
smallpiece
09-09-2004, 09:29 PM
..o.k, this one is just to give you a beta idea of the driving position...
smallpiece
09-09-2004, 09:33 PM
..And this is the final piece( i think:) ).
its a bit scrappy but i'm still trying to get used to my graphic tablet...but i'm quite happy with the outcome..hope you all like it
:)

ROB, are you gonna coloring it?can wait to see it finish, looks good so far:).

Here is what i came up with this time:
By year 8042 as predicted by scientists male species are extinct... here is the explanation for popularity of female drivers :D. Good job guys!
Independently moving side wings alow low degree turns dictated by high speeds.
Since vehicle isl almost flying during the race weels are thin to porvide minimal support.
Hey Androgs, I'm in the middle of colouring in. Its still lacking something so I'm going to add a few features. I'm not that good at realistic painting and shading so I'm going to stick with a cel shaded look.
Trkls - interesting design kinda reminds me of the wacky races!
Here's my entry, I would have liked to paint a racing scene but I think I need a break.

Smallpiece, thank you,
You design is very unusual, and I like how you did the materials (shine etc.) (shadows looks so real)
David, great atmosphere! blue reflections are awesome.
Rob nice design, I wish tere were a little more deetail to the vehicle.

Good work all!!!:)
Trkls, thats a nice design, remind me an oldies plane, but mix with futuristic style;).
ROB, good job, man. ;)well represented design.
here's my entry, though it still weak at style and..I think (sigh) still not achieve a today standard design, but I'm very enjoy when doing this. hope you all like it. and good luck for the other entries.:)

Great work, you guys! :D I reallhy like all the entries.
Smallpiece - great design.
Dave - this one has the mood indeed :D
Trkls - interesting design. Base on the old plane, huh? ;) Probably you should change it a bit more, but that's just me. :)
ROB - it's OK, I would shade it a bit more. More contrasts.
Androgs - fabulous. :D
There's still some time left, so keep posting the ones that didn't post!
TheOne - where's your entry!? :P ;)
OK, I managed to make an entry for this one :D. Finally. I don't know, if I'll maage to make the race shot, but who knows... :D

nice work.
1.Trkls - no atmosphere, but very clean drawing.

3. Michael (and if I can't vote for you 'cause you're Admin, then it's David Ciprian) - good concepts

1- Androgs
2- Smallpiece
3- Trkls
Michael is for 1st place if he can compete. Has better design than Androgs (this includes the driver/rider)
I vote for:
i) Androgs - good sense of speed and nice lighting
ii) Dave - I like the texture on the bike and the glow
It would be nice to see your concepts more 3d like in the future
Michael

Thanks so much for the appreciation, but my entry is not "votable". :D I just made it for practice/learning/fun. :D I'm really glad you liked it. :D
ROB - state your third place, please. We ALWAYS pick three places :)
My third pick is Smallpiece

David, yeah, :o I'm not good at designing a vehicle, hehe:o .
my vote:
1 . David, good atmosphere and design

..tough desicion this....
1-David- great design and well presented.
2-Androgs- very well painted and good design, but design seems to be too stereotypical of sci-fi for me.
3-Trkls-nice way of bringing, old to new, and nicely painted...
well done everyone:)
