and here's what i think you mean by clay?... ya, totally new at this, sorry again.

modeled in 3ds max 6 in about 40 minutes
maybe five minutes on lighting and about twenty minutes to render (you said rendering time doesnt count against you, right?)
rendered with mental ray.

Orkron, dude,it seems that you are not spending much time on Lighting, hmm?
you are good at modeling,so why dont you spend some more time on lighting? it'll make your models look more better....

Tip: Try using IES Sky and Sun,you may get some good daylight effect out of it...;) (don't forget to increase the Rays/Samples of light tracer)

There, using despitados method I actually created a mouse like object, heheh....I made a mistake somewhere though.

Software: 3D Studio Max R6
Modelling: About 20 minutes
Texturing: what texture?
Rendering: a few seconds

Yeah, I know. I'm going to try and make a real mouse in a bit. I was just trying out Max 6 mostly. It's a lot different from version 3 and I have to get used to it.

H2O-3DT
15-09-2004, 01:05 AM
if u are taking the leap from max 3. U will wellcome the changes.
Allot easier too use, and much more flexible and feature filled.
Have fun!. :D

I don't have any tutorial as such...but all i can give you is some info about Daylight and Light Tracer

Daylight System:
The Daylight System helps setting the lights for an outdoor scenes at a specific location, date and
time. An assembly with an IES Sky and an IES Sun lights is created with the appropriate orientation.
The user interface will have the controls for each light plus a way to position them and animate
their movement based on location, date and time.
I hope this helps you.
wait till I write a tut for that..:)

NEO

Neomax
15-09-2004, 01:14 AM
ORKRON: Turn on the light tracer in the advanced lighting and create a IES Sky and IES Sun in your scence, directing the object,
for IES Sun, keep intensity in betwn 1000 to 2400 lx.(depends upon you; how bright you want it) and render it(it may take several mins)

IES Sky and IES Sun:
IES Sky is a dome light similar to Skylight, while IES Sun is a strong light source used for outdoor
scenes where the Sun has to be simulated. These light are physically based and can be found in the
Photometric lights group. Their settings are oriented toward the architectural world, where realistic
values are required.
While they can be used as separate entities, they are more easily managed using the Daylight
System, which combines the two and provide a common user interface.

NEO:)

Neomax
15-09-2004, 01:22 AM
One more thing:
If you are getting some Black spots on your rendered image, that means the number of Rays/Samples emitted by light tracer are less(its like Photons of GI),then you can increase the number of rays and even Bounces. But Increasing bounce by 2,and rays by 2x,is equal to increasing rendering time by 3 times...so be careful...
I hope it Helps you.:)

NEO

PS- I have got a Radiosity PDF which ships with 3dsmax,if you dont have it then tell me a location where i can upload it,i'll upload it for you.(size:989KB)

Orkron
15-09-2004, 01:52 AM

I think Littlejohn, H2O and Despistado have this challenge nailed pretty well, and hats off to you guys for helping all us others with explanations of your process.
There are little subtle things in modelling that make a vast difference if you know about them and these challenges benefit us all, when people share their knowledge.
lets keep it up.

Orkron
15-09-2004, 03:36 AM

I was thinking the same, at the start it was very obvious that people were struggling with this challenge - that makes it more fun :)

Those that have stuck at it will no doubt take something away from it that's a lot more valuable than any proze they may pick up along the way.

to those that had a go, no matter how hard it seemed well done :)
to those that dropped the baton when it got a little tough - shame on you :(

Here's my entry for this week

This is the mouse that I've been chasing.......oops, using for the last 2 years or so.
It's a Microsoft IntelliPoint WheelMouse Optical.

It's not a shiny or flashy thing.......the looks are simple, but the shape is ergonomic.

Here's the clay render:

hi despitado,

u said u don't want ur prize.if u don't so plz give it to me:o :) :)
hey i m just kidding.just making fun with u.by the way i tried ur vid tut it's good.but i can't see it as stable screen.but i learn only one thing from ur tut & that is.........i first make the poly box than i do the cuts with boolean whatever i need the har edges on my mouse ,then last from ur tut,i apply FFD box modifier on it then shape the mouse at the last.by this ii can make very cool mouse model.

Thanks despitado remind me to FFD box modifier.
i have made only two buttons simple mouse.which one i m gonna post later on.i just got tires with C++.i like to make more but i can't able to give the time to challange.

hey ANDY, i think u have to declare the result of last week challange.& hope we will get next challange announced.

Its a good one DESPISTADO much different from your earlier postings. I like it. After a long tough download i finally got your tutorial, Thanx for your effort. It really means alot. There is a readme file says that chamfer madness is necessary but that script is only for max 5 and 6 and i still stuck with max 3.
:grr:

But it sure helps me to improve my modelling technique.

lol i like your nick hahahaha i speak spanish too:P

about the booleans i didnt know that well i use max 5.1 i prefer 5.1 than 6 a lot of plugins not are suported for 6 version i hope 7 version got more compatibily, good stuff in version 6 are shell modifier and particle flow, and i read some feature of max 7 and i see very interesting stuff like the update of edit poly modifier and the edit poly enhancement, the improved UV editing and the first person camera and i hope version 7 dont have a lot of errors like 6 but still i think version 7 have minor updates

I had this tiny little mouse thingie going on... Worked on the model for about 20 min... And then i thought, hell i have to try out shag hair (as I've never used it before), put some hair on the friggin mouse.... And Max crashes... I did save my model in time, but i cant render it with shag hair, so then i just stopped working on it... And btw, if anyone have any suggestions on what i could do to get this shag hair/fur working...Hell, tell me! :S And yeah, a tutorial for the friggin' thing would also be great...

Anyhow, nice models you'll!

this one seemed to present a few of you with problems. looking through the first few pages there were virtually no good models, everybodty was making mistakes that could have easily been avoided by doing a little research or applying the tools better. For one person to get it "wrong" and ask for help is one thing, but when others carry on repeating the mistakes is really unneccessary.

With a few exceptions the standard this week was dissapointing, rushed mice with no buttons, buttons that didn't fit, buttons that hadn't been seperated from the mouse - come on guys how do you expect these to "work"? One of the ideas of these challenges is for you to use your software in different ways. I think this weeks challenge illustrated perfectly that the "normal" low poly mesh then smooth tchnique doesn't always work. A few "got it", those entries stood out and are the ones on the list below.

Each week I get a few mails from people asking why they haven't won or got a mention. I don't mind answering but it would be really helpful if before asking "why?" you took a look at your own image and compared it to the ones we selected.

Thank you to Threedy, Andy and the staff.

And thank you to those participating.

I never had a chance to enter the the organic mouse. (shown below). Work deadlines, presentations, hurricanes, kids, family, friends, reading, writing, brew,... etc etc... We all have our reasons.

Again, thank you.

Andy, CD2 from the Total Texture CD collection if you please. (I assume you can refer to past information per address requirments.. if not please reply here.)

Congrats to all the winners, runners-up and honorable mentions.
And thanks for the hon. mention, Andy :)

CutCopyPaste, just wanted to ask u, if u don't mind.........how long have u been into 3D?
Right from learning till your current pro phase?

Your models r awesome, whatever the topic be.
They speak a lot of how seasoned you've become.

Many Congratulations to the winners this week. We all knew that H20 was going to walk away happy this week... (Although I think it's completely unfair that he's so talented...) :D Great Job! And CutCopyPaste's model was just too awesome... (I think they should both be banned from future contests!!!) ;) Also, thanks for the mention... I feel proud to be among such talented people... You Guys Rock!

I'd would also like to Thank Andy for putting up with us crazy guys and not giving up on us rule breakers by keeping these contests going! Yours is a truely hard job and "WE" truely do appreciate your valuable time! :D :D :D
