Hi
What do u think about this ?
What is wrong ? I want to correct the failures before it`s too late :o
Can u give me some hints for modelling an anime char ?
I am using 3ds Max 6.0.
Any C&C is welcome =)
How can I do the hair then ?
i think i have to model them, haven`t I ?

Its way to early to give crits. But I think your best bet is to study the tutorial of Joan Of Arc, since she got hair which is modelled and not made with hair plugins.

So, i Continued and made the nose ...
I also looked at the Joan of Arc Tutorial ...
HM ... it seems that something is wrong with the nose, but i can`t see/detect it.
Maybe u can help me ?

Cool, a Naruto char
I think the problem with the nose is that Sasuke, and most other anime figures, don't have a large nose with nostrills like that, it's just pointy :)
Grashupfa
09-09-2004, 10:28 PM
hehe =)
Someone who knows/likes Naruto :p
Hm ... i already recognized that.
The nose is just pointy when u look at the front of the head. But from the side, they have a nose like u and me... so what can i do ?
I try to make a normal nose and we will see how it looks like ...
Ninto
09-09-2004, 11:37 PM
hm, never noticed the nostrills at sasuke :p I see it now, I'd just model it like the side.
btw, are you gonna cellshade this model?

heh always good to see naruto fans, i started modeling naruto a while ago and stoped cuz it was my first attempt at organic modelign and these drawings dotn give good depth and detail in the face, but u seem to be doing a good job so far keep it up,
Grashupfa
10-09-2004, 01:20 AM
@Ninto
Hm .. I don`t know if i am going to cellshade him, anyway, I would be proud of finishing his head =)
@pat1337
Hey, it`s also my first attempt at organic modelling =)
I am worried about the hair, they seem to be very difficult to model ....
:D

Here Is a wireframe, I wanted to know if there is a good method to clean this mesh failures ...
I will clean the other ones later up, but I dunno how I can clean the red marked ones ....
C&C welcome =)

This is the best nauto model I've seen on this forum :D
Right now I don't have any direct crits.
Keep up the good work
PhantomOokami
11-09-2004, 02:24 AM
Lol, Mustela.. maybe. But this is the second one I'd seen so far so I can really say right now.
Grashupfa
11-09-2004, 02:20 PM
Rofl ... Phantom Ookami, please post some Critics or sth else to the topic :O
In ur Post u also warned me about that, so please don`t spam ...
I know, that my model is bad :!!!:
cuz it`s my first head ....

11-09-2004, 04:20 PM
That looks cool, but i think it'll only look like sasuke cell shaded
unless you can prove me wrong :)
good luck.
Grashupfa
11-09-2004, 04:42 PM
thx ... Hm ... Maybe u are right =)
But if i can handle it making the hairs like what they look like , he maybe could look like Sasuke, even if he is not cellshaded ;)

11-09-2004, 11:08 PM
Hey guys ...
thx for the help and crits so far :D
I got some problems with the mouth, it doesn`t look like what I want to :p
I mean, there is sth strange at it, but i dunno what it could be ....
Please help
PhantomOokami
12-09-2004, 12:51 AM
It needs to be pulled back more. Sideways and then back.
Grashupfa
12-09-2004, 03:27 AM
thx for this reply ... what do u think about the proportions ?
Are they allright ? Or is the Mouth to small ?
PhantomOokami
12-09-2004, 03:47 AM
Yeah, the mouth looks too small. The corners of the mouth should be pulled back a little bit. And that chin problem will probably go away. Looks like you got two wire lines too close together.
Grashupfa
12-09-2004, 03:49 AM
Yes, I already fixxed it =)
thx 4 ur help :)
PhantomOokami
12-09-2004, 04:22 AM

Grashupfa
12-09-2004, 04:58 AM
thx 4 the comments , they realy motivate me =)
@ PhantomOokami
hm ... I think there are many ways to do them, since u have only to make a Hole in the nose :p
Just kidding - I looked them up in the Joan of Arc Tutorials, found at 3dtotal.com in the Tutorial section.
I got a small update, (i know that I am very slow, but i had to clean the mesh up cuz It`s the first head I model :D )
c&C Welcome
( I am looking forward to do the hair  )

thx for all the comments
*** Update ***
I worked a lot and here it is *lol*
There are many mistakes left, I am going to correct them now. I got some prolems with the ear (?) and the head ribbon (or how do u call it).
What`s the best method to do it ?
I selected the vertexes of the forehead and cloned them to a new objekt. After this i gave it the right (?) shape and here it is. Maybe u can help me ?
C&C welcome

12-09-2004, 09:58 PM
ear looks fine, could use some more detailing, but it's just a cartoon anyhow
altho you should push the vertices in where the front of the ear meets the head
i think the headband is fine, when you apply a nice texture to it, it will be cool :D if you want to see a more detailed one go to downup's girl thread, his is across the eyes but it's the same thing
PhantomOokami
13-09-2004, 08:02 AM
I think one of the problems with the ears is that they're flattened down to the head. If you look at the ref(from what I can see) the ears aren't completely flattened down... pull the end of it (opposite side from us) more foward.

13-09-2004, 10:06 AM
i really like how this is coming along keep up teh good work
Grashupfa
13-09-2004, 01:25 PM
thx for the replies =)
I know that the ear is not perfect ;) , but i am going to work on it, allthough you can`t see the ear when the hair is on him =)
But it is only fpr training ..... :)
PhantomOokami
13-09-2004, 11:08 PM
Well it also depends if you're animating him too. Like, Fuu's hair is gonna be covering up the majority of the ears but you can still see them in the anime, same with Sasuke here.
Grashupfa
13-09-2004, 11:54 PM
Yes, that`s right, but i dunno if i`m going to animate him. I will think about it, when i have finished his head and (probably) the body =)
I would be very very lucky, if i could do these things (modelling, texturing) right and in the end Sasuke is looking good.
PhantomOokami
14-09-2004, 01:09 AM
Yeah, but you can still see his ears from the front and side, lol. Well, keep on modeling... I'd like to see this done.
Grashupfa
15-09-2004, 01:09 AM
Yes, u are right ....
Anyway, i tried to do the hair, but like u said, they are very, very difficult ...:grr:
Does anybody know any good hair tutorials ? I have to model them ... so the tutorials mustn`t be for shag.hair or other plugins ....
I mean, i am coming forward, but very slow ...
PhantomOokami
15-09-2004, 01:11 AM
Are you using shag type or are you gonna use planes?
Grashupfa
15-09-2004, 02:26 AM
I dunno what shag type is, but i am going to use normal poly modelling, yes, sth like planes =)
hpslashluvr
15-09-2004, 04:19 AM
this is the best hair tutorial i have found so far
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/modeling/hair/
it's for lightwave, not sure what software you use, but mapping planes is pretty much universal...it's basically just a box and a texture
shag is a hair plugin, if you are using 3dsmax you can use ornatrix which is for free
Grashupfa
15-09-2004, 10:43 AM
I`m using 3D Studio Max 6.0 ....
Thx for the Tutorial ... am i going the post a new update when the hairs are finished ... maybe today, maybe tomorrow ... =)
PS: School sucks ! ;)

15-09-2004, 04:48 PM
Hm .... ARGGGGHHHH !!!
I got big problems with the hair, especially with the ones at behind her 'head'.
I mean, they look like the horns from a red deer ....
I made them by extruding the polygons .... the other ones, which are in front of the ear, are mady by edge extruding .... the main problem is, i can`t handle it to do the hair behind the ear with edge extruding, cause then there is a hole at the back of the head. I cann`t close it, because i extrudet the edges of the polygons ...
Hope everybody understands it
Hm... can anyone help me ?
whats the best method to do this hair? ....
hpslashluvr
15-09-2004, 05:44 PM
i'm not quite sure what you mean by a hole in the back of the head, do you mean the headband is blocking it?
i'd just select (for instance that flat poly above the ear in the side view you posted) and extrude that, for the polys that are going straight back, can't you just pull the verts down?
did you look at the joan of arc tutorial for this? the hair is essentially the same except yours has a headband
edit: ohhhhhhh i thought you were extruding polys...extruding polys like in the joan of arc tut might be easier perhaps
Grashupfa
15-09-2004, 07:07 PM
Yes maybe, but in the Joan of Arc Tutorial, the author also uses edge extruding technic. ....
Actually, i am trying it again and again .... =)
Grashupfa
15-09-2004, 08:12 PM
Coming along very well, but i need a picture of his head + hair from behind. I used google several times, but i haven`t found anything ...
Is there anyone who accidentally has got such a pic ?
greetings

Small Update -.-
Very early texture test, what do u say ?
Any C&C please :)
Grashupfa
16-09-2004, 12:25 AM
Second pic from the side .... there are still many mistakes, but i am pretty proud of the intermediate result, Because it`s my very first head ^^
PhantomOokami
16-09-2004, 01:26 AM
Looks like you should pull the band back and even out the hair sticking out.
Grashupfa
16-09-2004, 02:06 AM
What do u mean ? Do I have to pull out the long hair over the band ? And the band back or what ?
If this is right, i`ll try it. Thx for the comment ^^
~edit~
Sorry, I have understood u know, i made a reading mistake....
