UPDATE: CANCELLED. Greg Bears agents have categorically stated that this project would endanger any discussion with studios in regard to selling rights for EON as a film, they say that the rights package includes multimedia, and any 'previous art' endangers initial talks... which they are actively undertaking...apparently.
---A few days ago I emailed Greg Bear, the author of the blockbuster sci-fi epics 'Eon' and 'Eternity'... amongst many other awesome Sci-fi novels.
I wanted to get his feedback on the chances of his supporting the idea of a Game World based on 'Thistledown' and 'The Way'.
A brief explanation:
Thistledown - the hollowed out asteroid which Humans come to inhabit, creating 7 chambers of various utility
The Way - The fabulous infinite corridor, created by the same Humans as created Thistledown as a result of the ability to manipulate space-time material.
Well... I was happy to find that he has had this in mind since the mid 90's and I believe would be happy to see it attempted, though would not really become overly involved until such time as he saw some results and the direction it was going... there was also brief mention of potential licensing further down the road... becoming an official Greg Bear/Thistledown Product, that sort of thing... (obviously bringing with it the spectre of financial reward). I believe he just wants to avoid (quite understandably) a situation like that of Larry Niven not recieving royalties for the conversion of his Ringworld novels into HALO.
All of which sounds like music to my ears, as I have always wanted to see a film of Eon and Eternity... better yet, to actually walk around in the 7 chambers and cruise the Way in a flaw ship! And shoot-up Jarts as well of course! :)
So now I am looking for a few people to form a core group of designers/ modellers/ artists/ landscapers/ animators / multi talented jobbers who would be keen to undertake a lengthy and complex 3D world construction project... one which could develop into an official and licensed product.
But what IS it you may ask. Well it will most probably be based on the Unreal3 technology unless something even more awesome comes along, and it would be safe to call it a game at this stage. Though my vision for it is slightly grander and could be called a persistent world (but not really a MMORPG)
(worst case scenario is that it would be created as a MOD of an existing game with new code and all new content. The goal and best case is that it is a licensed engine and released through a large publisher... we shall see... if we can prove our worth to Greg and show him a truly spectacular rendering of his vision... well I'm sure his weight could be lent toward a publishing deal)
First things first though. I'm looking for a core group of only 10 people at this point. Please send your details and portfolio to me at theosys(at)tencubed(dot)org . I would be happy if you were either a Greg Bear fanatic, failing that a Sci-fi fan...failing that supremely good at your craft!
Best Wishes
