Cool one!
"Dollar bill fill created w/ script + simcloth " ????
I am confused when it commes to scripts. Is it a custom script u have written for the pig,
or embedded in simcloth?
In general i have had trouble finding much info about maxscripting. (i know i am to blame for this.. :) )
Any good sites for scripting..?

cutcopypaste why you use simcloth and reactor for the same purpose? why not only use one of them for both fill bill and coin?

Water,
Thank you.
The script is custom, used in conjunction with simcloth. (the choice of simcloth over reactor-cloth or stitch is due to the use of a single modifier .vs multiple modifiers and components)
Per learning max scripting. I'm far from knowing even a percent of a percent of max scripting. When I have spare time and ideas to run up the flagpole with scripting I give it a whirl and usualy end up failing. Along the way of trying I end up learning about 100 new things though, so failure isn't all bad.
Most of the scripts I create are simple at best. Though they may not cause anyone to cheer, they are normally satisfying to my particular needs on whatever project I need them for.
Some simple routines you do over and over again can be easily made into pre-made plug-ins by simply doing the process once and opening the listenner and eidting it out slightly. IE... You want to create a tree in max and are going to do so with a simple box modelling-nurms method. You can use a random face select call to select polys to extrude (this is not always a great solution as random is often retarded when it comes to practical.) However, you can at least create a script that automates the extrusion method. By creating 3 sperate limbs (and saving out the listenner info) you can create 3 buttons. You then can simply select polygons and click a button to apply the extrusion method. You can go further and further with the scripts by adding in random calls, undo operations, smoothing opertions, etc etc. You can even make your own interface if it's that in depth of a process. Very cool and helpful.
**
If you are interested in learning some scripting then I'd suggest you visit bobos site, aka... boboland (http://www.scriptspot.com/bobo/). Bobo is a very cool guy and shares his knowledge willingly in real life and on his site and other forums. You can ask questions of him and others at CGTALK (http://www.cgtalk.com/index.php?) (member sign-up rqrd.) Be sure to visit the maxscript forum and post questions there, and not in the general forum.
Good reference material for maxscripting would come from
here (http://www.lyric.com/maxscript101/details.htm), or directly from Discreet (http://www4.discreet.com/3dsmax/3dsmax.php?id=396). The Discreet forum is not always a great place to find information, but, it too often has some great queries and solutions.
And of course, there is the ever infamous HELP files that come with your software. There is an entire manual for maxscipting that is right there in front of you but you may have never opened before. Help>MaxScript Reference...
It isn't easy (unless you're into programming), but it can be very rewarding and a great time saver once you learn at least some of the basics.
**edit**
Desp,
I used reactor and simcloth because I was working on 3 machines at one time. I didn't have simcloth installed on the one machine and decided to use reactor and get the job done while the other machine was doing the simclothing and scripting.
Reactor cloth would not have been as efficient to use for the dollar bills. Reactor requires adding a collector, a cloth modifier, a cloth collector and a whole bevy of additional paramters which are not needed. I'm sur eyou know how in depth reactors control panel and modifier sets are. Reactor handles sets pretty well and keyframes everything. This is very handy and useful for making adjustments.
It simply came down to what I could do on one machine while the others were working. The downside of having all these machines running and working is, even with the air-conditioning on, my home office heats up to about 90 degrees (32C) at times.

Despistado,
I would suggest that you look at some of the links I gave above.
There are quite a few tutorials contained within the Help>MaxScript Reference help file. Look under the "How-To.. Practical Examples" section of the manual.
The tutorials are pretty well written. But, they are not in my native language of ENGLISH and are instead written for people who enjoy technical lingo (wording). (jk)
If you find that you can make it thorugh a few of those tutorials without getting brain cramps then you'll probably want to check out the Discreet site where you can locate some more in depth tutorials.
As said above, Bobo's site has some scripts laid out and he explains what is being done on most steps and why those steps are taken. Bobo and others are always willing to help out where and when they can on various forums on the web. You have to be pretty clear what it is you are asking about. Otherwise you might be misled into some scipting nightmare because somethign was worded badly in your inquiry.
What I have learned comes from hands on experimenting, doing the supplied tutorials and most importantly, from picking apart scripts I have located or have had written by others.
Sorry, I don't have any links to beginners tutorials.
Give the supplied tutorials a go and see how things work out.
**
hulk,
Sorry, your guess is a little high at $500.
I don't think a bank w/money inside it is considered to be a unique idea, so, no, I didn't copy your idea! **smile**
Yes, you can use reactor to fill these banks. There are inclusive issues that arise with any simulator. Knowing reactor pretty well I determined it was not the best choice for the application to the model I created.
You have raytraced materials inside your material library folder. You should be able to find something suitable for glass use inside there if you are trying to figure out the base parameters.

I dont take any offense, but Its a compliment. Although its true, the image is a bit decieving. Most of the items in the scene are only cubes, and beveled cylinders, simple to model in only a fe seconds. especially when you are rushing to beat a deadline. I modeled the bank scene first leaving myself not too muych time on the pig, which wasent too smart. I could finish a tail or add the detail I had planned. I guess I still have to work on my planning skills but I love the feedback.

bobweb,
I enjoyed your take on the subject matter. Very amusing indeed !
I'm curious to know how many naps you took in that 43 minutes of modelling time though ! ?
**
hulk, I see you've found raytraced materials and filled another bank with pennies. I'd say probably about $1.98 worth of them.
**
Frost,
Is that a spline cage ? Or is it just the lit wireframe that's making the wireframe look that way?
bobweb
19-09-2004, 08:23 PM
@cutcopypaste: I knew, that somebody would pick up on this :o. Actually, I just should have thought a little more about modelling it. I had no idea how it should look like and just modelled along and tried some things, which is obviously not the most efficient way of doing it. I could remodel it faster but I was still within the time limit and for the sake of honesty in this competition I used my first take... I promise, I will think more next time... ;)
CutCopyPaste
19-09-2004, 08:31 PM
Nothing wrong with that bob. As I said, a very amusing notion on the subject title.
I think if you were to texture it in a more 'realistic' manner, threw some mustard on it, it'd be even more interesting.
Now stop taking those naps during modelling ! There's plenty of time for that during regular schedualed work hours ! *grin*

by the way, how old r u ?u told before that u teach some one named "prithvi" in mumbai.& yeah why do u be online at the night?(tum raat ko online kyon hota hai? :D )
ohh thanks for my century. :D

Alright...Finally found some time to get something done; the university life is a hectic beast. Anyways, I was trying to capture the "cyborg-pig" look, but I think I may have fell a bit short; make of it what you will. Comments welcome and much appreciated. Now that my rammblings are over, I just want to give some credit were credit is due. First off, to everyone, great work. I've seen some impressive stuff out there from everyone, but I think a few deserve special mention.
H2O: Everythings looking awesome as usual. Keep up the good work.
Okron: Just because you can't do organic doesn't mean that it's any less cool. I know I would want a transformer piggybank. Trust me, it's good.
Bully: Again I see that you are pushing out some impressive work. Keep it up.
Pachuco: I love your submission. It looks completly whacked out of it gourd. :)
LittleJohn: Out of all the submissions thus far, I think that yours has fully captured the essence of the word "piggybank".
arona: I just have one question. Is it going to eat me?
Psycho Mantis: One word....Awesome.
And a final thankyou goes out to H2O for informing me of my ignorance of the new posting rules. :)

Now that I'm back in Brighton I made a start on this challenge but in the middle I took a break to install sp2 for winxp. Bad idea - couldn't get my computer to work after that. Had to go in to safe mode to get rid of it. Oh well back to normal now. Should finish that pig later today.
Andy_k-3DT
21-09-2004, 05:28 PM
sp2 worked fine on all of our machines with genuine copies of XP Pro- took about 20 seconds to set up the security panel, the network, mapped drives, shared printers etc all work perfectly.
So it get's the "recommended" tag here :)
A word of warning, a friend found out that if you are using a slightly less than "honest" copy of Windows XP Pro things can and probably will go horribly wrong as it seems to check for authenticity.

How many iterations have you set it up for?
Ideally you should go for 2.......at the most 3.
Anything beyond that will be hard on your system.

Nice one Bully. Saving the best for last. I was thinking about building something similar but I couldn't get my brain around the mechanics. I'm probably not fast enough any way.

Well Bully....
I got my pc up and running...I lost half the stuff on my storage drive....And of the half that I recovered, half of that was corrupted...So essentially, I've lost over a year's worth of work...And I was a fool for not backing up my system. I'll be back in for week 15 though. :D

I know i'm late, slow user and machine has taken ages to light, mat and render
A copy of a papier mache( egg boxes, baloon, newspapers) 'ferocious piggy bank' i made with my son
model 50 mins
light and mat hour +
render 20mins
I've made it so i have to post it!

(not an entry)
Base mesh modelling time--lower wireframes in image(12 minutes)
1st level sub-d poly-sculpting-- upper wireframes in image (20 minutes ttl for 2 boar-pigs and 1 doggish creature created from the 1 original base mesh)
No renderings or displacement maps (maybe one day)
**
A pre-emptive Congratulations to Pachuco ! Nice and clean loops, which clearly let the smoothing levels do their work well. The characters eyes and lids certainly made your 2 models stick out.

well posting rules state that u have to use the attach function. But why would u want to post here anyway. This comp is closed. Has been for a few days now..
Andy_k-3DT
24-09-2004, 07:34 PM
Crewler. if you want to post using the IMG tag it needs to "point" to an image you have stored on the web.
We haven't allowed them in these competitions because people are forever moving their web space from one supplier to another or deleting images when they run low on space.
Also, as has been pointed out, this challenge has past it's deadline

Congratulations Pachuco and Nickbot !
An amusing entry by Nickbot.
And Pachuco... Very well done. Nice and clean loops for your topology that resulted in a nicely smoothed out finish product. The eyelids, drooped ears and awkward smile gave your character,... well, ... character. Well done.

Congrats to all the other entries as well.
