This is a simple image I built in Bryce 5, using Photoshop 7 for some post-production. I've tried to emulate a strong mood and sense of atmosphere in the final render.

To me it just looks like a few terrains put together. I think in Bryce (Which BTW was my first 3D app) is you really want to make a whole scene with lots of details in it. Check out:

to get a good look at the things Bryce can be used for.

Thanks for the reply. The first example (explosion), was definitely helpful. The second one, though, of the street, was cool but not as helpful. I use 3ds max 6, also, and I build street scenes etc. in max. The piece I've displayed here was just an experiment with a few terrains. I wasn't really going for a complex 3D scene, just a moody, atmospheric scene to show my sense of composition, etc.
However, I am always looking to improve, so I will consider a few ways to spice up my scene based on your example.
Thanks Again!

To me is just like a B&W picture taken over Mars...I really like the overall mood and atmosphere...My only suggestion is to add a little more detail on the terrain...Nice work mate...:)

Thanks for the replies everyone. To be clear, I did use Bryce 5 for this one. I was just experimenting with a few terrains and such. However, I will probably start building environments in max 6 from now one. Once I convert to building scenes in max, I will probably use polymodeling, relying heavily on displace modifier, as well as FFD, etc.
I do agree that the scene is a bit dark, and will probably experiment with some color overlay in Photoshop this weekend.

Thanks for the comments guys. Here is an update, this one is with color and an attempt at adding smoke/steam to the geyser. Not sure the steam will stay though. Any comments? Also, I am not completely happy with the lighting myself. I could definitely use some suggestions in this area. Thanks again!
