View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr 6!!!!!!

Michael
19-09-2004, 04:37 PM
Hello, guys,

Time for some scenery challenge. This week's challenge will be to paint the landscape/impression of a mood, DESCRIBED IN FOLLOWING LINES:

"The sun is covered a little by small, fluffy clouds. A subtle breeze is blowing from the east, caressing long blades of grass and leafs on a signle tree. The tree has been growing here for a long time, had lots of space for it and it rules the surrounding area, spreading it's branches further and further in all directions. Some flowers are showing their small faces here and there, hoping to be seen by a bee flying by. Everything seems to be peacefull, but there's something wrong.... something... in the thick roots of the tree. The tree doesn't realise it yet, neither all the area... but it's there. Something....

....evil."

You can use a reference on this of course. Please STICK to the description. There's little of specific details - you can hint the evil in thousands of ways, you can put any tree here, you can play with perspective - so there's lots of ways to interpret and paint it.

Deadline - as usual - Sunday the next week - 12:00 GMT + 01:00.

Have fun :D!

David Ciprian

So we can paint anything as long as it's a scenery with mood ?

Can we have 200 entryes for this one? :D

TheOne
19-09-2004, 08:55 PM
You have to stick to the description I reckon... :)

David Ciprian

I wonder: "You can use a reference on this of course."

David Ciprian

Anyway here's an attempt, one hour in PS. Not a strong mood, but there is some...I hope

David Ciprian

I like this mood better, 'nother 5 minutes

Trkls

Nice topic :>)
David congratulation on your last entry,
I was away for some time.
Nice one this time too, but I think you have to stick with the tree idea.

Michael
19-09-2004, 10:08 PM
Undertow - yeah, that's what I was aiming for in description. Nice attempt, Maybe you could find some reference photos on the tree and surroundings, maybe you could try to pait from it, see how it goes. Paint looking at it, do not copy the parts of the photo with clone tool or any other tool, it has to be handpainted :).
The aim for this challenge is to paint a scenery that I described, to capture a certain atmosphere in the painting. You managed it qiute well. I would work more on the bark, maybe different perspective shot. :) Play with it :) Maybe evil should be less visible amond the roots, more like a hint, maybe?

David - Yeah, as the One said - you should stick to the descpription. The reference I mentioned was about using it for certain parts of the photo, like the tree, clouds, grass... etc. And there should be some hint, that something evil is there in the roots. That is the challenge about, not any painting as long as it has mood in it  :p ;) . We always stick to the description. Your entry is fine, but doesn't resemble the desription, wouldn't you agree? ;) :D

David Ciprian
19-09-2004, 10:11 PM
No problem, I'll do a valid entry:)

Trkls: thanks

Michael
19-09-2004, 10:24 PM
The second one is nice.... :) maybe we will make one challenge about "free landscaping", with no desciption... just say a word, guys :D

bc1967 - great illustration! I really mean that :D .... but ummmm.... futuristic landscape competition will be here, but soon. You lost the tree :p. Please read the description at the top of the page and stick to it :)

Hi guys :)
i try to give a sensation of "something wrong" with a frustation and a sadness of a crying tree.
Maybe an old evil presence live in the tree and now show to all the world her sadness.

The evil is the same soul of the damned tree.

I made it in Painter 7 in about 3 hours of work.
i hope you like it :)
(sorry for my English :o :o )

i noticed that in all the images that all the of u guys have posted you all put a tree on the left hand side, when i first read the topic i immideatly thought of a tree on the left and an open field, though i have never done any 2d artwork, wait except 2 drawings, i am tempted to join this thread and give a shot at the 2d art, i dont have a tablet so i will have to draw in pen or pencil and scan and try my best.

Guys I'm having problems trying to paint the leaves well. Can any one help, Tutorial or something?

David Ciprian
20-09-2004, 02:52 PM
If you're using photoshop there's a predefined leaf brush

ROB
20-09-2004, 03:01 PM
Yer, the one Undertow used for his first entry. I'd like to try something a bit more realistic. I tryed the leaves but they dont really go that well with my pic. :(

David Ciprian
20-09-2004, 03:27 PM
Well you can get nice effects if you can handle the shadows and colors while with the leaf brush

Afternoon all,

I decided to break up the day by doing your speed challenge at lunchtime.

These little challenges are a good idea, it's always good to practice.

This is my first post by the way, though I have been reading 3dtotal enthusiastically for a couple of years now.

it's been a while since i've actually gotten around to doing one of these...

comments and crits welcome too

Michael
21-09-2004, 12:55 AM
WOW, I see you like the idea :D Looost of posts here... and it's only second day of challenge :D... I'm so happy :D:o

Wampyr - really nice grass, good use of PS brush ;) I like the hint of the evil here :) Really nice

DJS - hehe... :D that's evil indeed :D

bc1967 - looking forward to it :)

Palantir - yes, I'm a Puppet Master :D you all will do waht I want. In the text a subliminal message is encoded, that you are to paint the tree on the left.... yesss.................... ;)
I like your entry, nice clouds. Nice cartoon style :)

MIND-breaker - I would loveto see it bigger with more details. :) Good one :)

Death_Monkey - maybe you should finish it... add more details maybe. Did you do it with mouse?

ROB - I think there's many ways to paint the leaves. But every artist has his own method. but a rule of a thumb says that when you see 3874 leave, you don't paint this number. You try to capture the impression of a shape. This will look more natural and better than if you would paint every single leaf.

Phynius Gauge - Looks good, I would add more details to it and more planes, more objects in the fog. Nice mood.

Undertow - sketchy... :D I would love to see your greater work, with more details and with more effort put into it :) ;)

Marticlepan - looks good so far, finish it. :)

I this is my first speed painting, hum, for a forum, its take around 2hours, i dont remember exacly.
Since 2 or 3 mounth, i dont know why, but i play with my color, maybe to study more the affectation of each other...

Im sorry, but my tree is missing in the background, i have just a couple of roots very appear, the most important to feel the weirdness.

Hi everyone, this is my first post, first comptetition, and first digital work that will be finished. I love all the pictures that you did! My pic, however, is still not finished but I would like to hear some comments or suggestions from you!

Thanks Michael :). I cleaned the picture up a lot, and worked on some details. About 4 hours at this point (I don't know if this is considered a speed painting any longer, but I hope it's OK).

http://img56.exs.cx/img56/7456/TreePainting13.jpg

BTW, do any of you mind letting me in on the secret to the nice grass you guys are producing? ;)

David Ciprian
21-09-2004, 12:51 PM
No secret. PhotoShop has 2 predefined brushes. If you make strokes of gras with variation in colour you'll get a nice effect. For advanced effects I can't help, maybe a pro will drop a line or two about the process.

Welcome

The image looks very good, but the left side of the painting and the right side have different mood and weather. I like more the right side. Also the clouds (in the left side is more obvious) might be too bright

ROB
21-09-2004, 03:28 PM
I thought I'd go with the tree on the left too! Hope you like my entry :D
Thanks To Dave C and Michael for your suggestions.

blaine_t - I really like the movment in your piece, its Brilliant!

Chokin Hazard™
21-09-2004, 04:06 PM
Hey ROB
that looks nice.
But I think you need to add more "mood" to the scene. You should make the scene foggy. It would make the painting look 10X better.

Cheers

21-09-2004, 05:28 PM

Michael
21-09-2004, 06:02 PM
blaine - I reaaly like it :) great work, I love the mood and the impression of movement. :)

ROB - Yeah, pretty good. I would add more contrasts to the leaves, to give the branches more shape, but it's good.

Undertow - ... I would really erase the hanging guy... :p ;) You're getting better. :D

First go at a speed painting contest, and first post here at threedy. Regardless, here is my submission;

Brownboot's Painting (http://www.allenwhite.com/tree1.jpg)

Its not my best, but It was the best I could do last night in an hour and a half or so... I'm not so pleased with the tree, if I'd wanted to spend ages on it I would have freehanded the bark, but I think it turned out ok, considering the "speed" requirement.

And, I mirrored mine just so the tree wouldn't be on the left :P. I think everyone draws focal points opposite their drawing hand, which would result in a great number of people with trees on the left as compared to the right. Subconciously wieghtier pieces on the left don't seem as heavy as they would on the right (usually the artists strong hand)...

That is my theory, on the blatant molestation of the left sides of our paintings by many a tree throughout this competition.

[edit] Done in PSP8...

LittleFish
22-09-2004, 06:41 AM
must...(gasp) post...(gasp) can't help it...
*hangs head and begins*

all the trees are now on the right and they all use the lava/fire combination (with the exception of a couple), all the grass is the same and the sky and the general atmosphere - you cannot harvest your potential artistic creativity unless you can hold the scene you want to achieve in your mind's eye - it must come from your mind to be the best it can. you guys are doing really well though.

edit: thank you though wampyr for the great inspiration of so many forum members.

(I almost hate to admit it, but I was actually pretty glad when wampyr's came up because that is what was originally in my mind's eye, but then no longer because then it was realized.)

THREEDY STAFF: (please) Always put the Speed Challenge links on the front page - it attracts so many more talented artists who contribute a great deal to each competition.

...I struggle with this myself:roll: The way i do it is to add a layer, fill it with your chosen colour on low opacity, then use long strokes with the eraser tool leaving you with your rays.
Its a bit scrappy but it works for me....but there's bound to be some more practical, and effective ways of doing it..:)

Dragan
22-09-2004, 07:09 AM
Well, I think that this is my final drawing, unless someone will help me out by hinting how to do Sun Rays. I see that everyone's drawings are awsome and its a very good competition! Feel Free to judge, comment, or flame my drawing but w/ explanations so I will be able to fix things :D

Edit: My final work. Time 3 hours, used Photoshop 7. Tried :D

not that my way looks great but i choose a soft brush and change the colour to white with maybe a hint of yellow then put the opacity down to 6% or so. then change the brush sizes around from large to very small drawing the lines where u want them depending on the effect u wish to create.

To draw the lines i place a dot where u want the ray to start then go where u want the line to finish and hold down shift and press another dot and it will draw a straight line.

After going over with all different sizes i'm sure u could make it look better than mine up there ^^^^^^ This is all done in photoshop.

and i'm sure theres a better way but thats my method, goodluck.

Sure! :D ;)

Uhm... I am all self-tought. I just have an idea of how the scene could look. Then I think about how colors fit in this scene and how they affect the mood of the scene... then I start painting. After a while I adjust the Hue, so that the colors fit my imagination. :)

Actually it's easy... Avatar said I got a great feeling for colors. :o

lhz, really:o?Thanks for your kind word:). about the time, its a shame that I failed to did this one with only one or two hour. it took me 3 day to finished this image, but each day I used 2 - 3 hour in making this one. hmmm..yeah, I know its too long for speed paint, but oh well, I really count the quality for each challenge, so :o I have to learn so much to produce such a great work with short amount of time, and this challenge..I believe will shape us better:) .

and here's mine. I went for a look, not sure what, but oh well. The clouds were great fun to do but only took about 5 minutes with that one brush, default size 36, a few down from the leaves. Yes, I know the trunk doesn't look that old, but the branch does, so it makes up for it. Besides, apart from the evil in the roots thing, the tree is very healthy. yeah... okay, here we go.

edit: oh yeah, it took me about 3 hours, maybe a little more.

edit: also sorry for the outline on the left side of the trunk. If it's good enough for the gallery, I will repaint that (not too damaging - I have 6 layers for this composition) so it has the light and not the outline. (explanation: I draw outlines first and then fill them in. That's just how I draw, because I haven't yet learned to grasp the shape of an object with just fill. With more practice I should be better at it.)

just looking back through... (my observations)

SmackMonkey had 3 paintings - I wouldn't consider any of the compositions that perfect by itself, but the second one was pretty good, and all 3 had excellent texturing of the bark. edit: especially the third one, loved the bark. If you had gotten the appropriate lighting like in the second one into the third painting and put that same focus into it, it would have been right up there, a strong contender.

1 Androg (Very nice composition! And so much details. I've read once "Details will always make your painting better").

2 3Dmonkey (Really like the medium you have used. Kind of water color...It gives so much effects.)

3 BlaineT (I just love the right mix of bright colors. I could feel the peace, the calm and the breeze...but where's the evil?)

There was so much good entries. It was quite difficult for me to choose and I think also for everyone else. So much different styles, impressions and techniques. Thanks to all! It has been very fruitfull for each of us...

My Votes:

1st 'Blaine_t'- good overall mood and movement, nicely subtle hint of evil. A very nice piece within the bounds of the description.

2nd 'toscoman'- very nice visual effect and good impression

3rd 'ilan747'- nice take on the evil, good grass, I prefer the first version.

also worth mentioning:
palantir - for cool sky
sidex - dreamy feel
victim335 - outstanding illustrational sketch
TheOne - interesting sky effect
Androgs - good all-round (I think the form of the leaves on the main tree needs fixing)
CHK - good fuzzy moss (the blood looks out of place, too vibrant)

Well done all, better luck next time round!

...it's a tough one this...
1-Blaine-t...page3,good pic all round, could have done with being a bit darker to add to mood.
2-Brownboot...page4,liked the colour and the feel of the pic.
3-Elvenartist...page7, the leaves need a bit of work but i love the way it looks like you could be creeping up on the tree through the tall grass..

...Welldone everybody:) ....
