I'm not sure if this is correct, But does this look like an HDRI rendering.

Its kinda hard to find a good HDRI tutorial that doesn't have to use Vray or Brazil.

I did this with Max default scaline redering.

Let me know if this looks good to pass as an HDRI rendering.

Here are somemore HDRI maps, there's 2 you can download. I think there pretty nice ones to.


As for the material I used them from the standard 3d max Raytrace Matlibs

Hi Cyrenn, I was looking long time for a tutorial like you ask and I didn't find anything that work fine. If you found some good tut with great result, can you post here the link? Thank a lot, and I prefer the first image much more, at my opinion it looks perfect ;)

i dont need hdri, i have many of that. but i want to have your very nice material on the spheres :)

im looking for such a tut 2. ivnt got vray or brazil, and all the tuts i find, use those... :( but ur spehres looook nice!!! thanks for the links guys!

HDRI is still quite easy in max5+
Just apply a HDRI map to a skylight.... it usually works fine (or appears to). But i'm no expert. Here is an image i rendered with the scanline using HDRI maps...

Stay tuned to this thread. I'll post a mini tutorial on how I came up with this version. I did it two different ways, also the process was made in 2 or 3 easy steps.

Nice One Honki - Now that I think that I figured out HDRI I wouldn't mind getting a nice copy of your Free car so that I could try and Texture it. : ) I also want to try it your way. It seems quite simple that way as well.

ALso I think it would be nice If others that did know HDRI renders, if they could post there ways of how they create HDRI. I agree with others. It is very hard to find a tutorial that explains it well.

Did you turn on advanced lighting / light tracer?

sorry honki i applied a hdri map to a skilight but it won't work..

by pressing "9" you call the lightmenu, then activate light tracer.

I made this with HDRI

I usually do my HDRI renders with Max 5 default render too.

This one (http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=234057) was rendered with HDRI in Max 5. Althought with another render system it could be better/faster, with max's default render you can achive great renders. Most people understimate the power of Max default render. :roll:

By the way nice Bike and Render Vitor.

Now I have 2 different ways I do these HDRI renderings.

The first one I did with Raytrace Materials the second one was done with Standard Materials. I also did this with Max 6. I'm not sure if Lower versions of Max have the pre built raytrace materials.

Now remember the Raytrace materials are already set to reflect off each other to what ever is in the scene.

Ok here we go.

The first thing I set up is a basic scene with a ground plane with a dirt map applyed to it and 3 spheres. The spheres have 40 segments each. Just so when they render they are nice and round:D

Of course I put a Skylight in and set it to advance Light trace. if your not sure how just push 9 on your key board after you set the skylight in.

Sorry if the pictures are in low resolution.

1. Click on a new sphere.

2. Click on standard

3. Click Material Library

4. Click on Open this should take you to Max 6 pre built materials.

5. Click on the first set of Raytrace Materials.

6 Now open.:D

This will take you to a bunch of cool pre built Materials in Max 6 lots of Gloss, Glass, and Chrome materials.:D

Any color will work. I just picked Gloss Orange for now:D

Ok I picked gloss Orange, You can pick any color or what ever suits you.

Now look in raytrace Basic Parameters. and find where it says
Enviorments make sure you check the box.

Click on where it says "NONE"

Your material Map browser pops up. Click on Bitmap.

This is where you will put your HDRI map.

Also remember that you already have some HDRI maps downloaded. there are a few links already posted on this thread to where you can get some good ones.

Once you choose your HDRI map, a window will pop up.

Also for this seen I didn't use the full sphere HDRI map I used the 180 degree skydome map.

Make sure to follow the reference picture I posted read the little details I posted on the pic.

After you place your HDRI map in the slot it should take you to coordinates. Click on where it says enviorment and click Spherical.

The picture posted shows in red where to go.

Also read the details in the pic for different results.

Now go back to the top of the Material editor.

It shows on the picture incase your not sure where to go.

After you click it. You will see the index refraction it is circled in red.

You can play with that to get different results on how high you want it to reflect the enviroment.

I put mine at 3.0 for this render.

Now go ahead and render it out and see what you come up with.

I did the same steps with the other spheres.

Juha, thanks for the comments...I'm glad you like the tank. I'm happy to help with the hdri's too :)

I got banned cuz I decided to say some sh*t i shouldn't have...The worst part is I woulda won that week too :( I would suggest you go read the forum from that week but Andy deleted every sigle post I did, including my submissions. Let's just say that Andy was looking for a reason to get rid of me and I played right into his hands like a fool...I really don't spend even 1/8th the time on these forums I used to...I like to help where I can, like this post, but my real love was the challenges, I shoulda just kept my mouth shut.

Anyways, I appreciate the positive reinforcement guys, really do...

spidermax, the HDRI looks pretty good, especially on the poolballs... i like the glass mat too, but i dont really like the ground...

Looking great Spidermax, maybe the contrast of the HDRI is a bit too high.

@ Orkron, I don't think you can just put someone elses HDRI on your site without even crediting them. All those HDRI's are copyrighted.
I think you should ask Paul Devebec and the other creators for permission before putting them on your site.

I just tried using the technique of using a skylight but Im having trouble.
When I press 9 nothing happens.
Then when I render it is predominately black (you can see the 'reflection' sort of but everything else is black)
So I added an extra light in the scene and now it renders fine but I dont like how the new light relflects. Ie. on my spheres I see a bright white circle which is the new light and it looks a little out of place.
Can anyone help me? (im running Max 6.0)

turn on final gather on metal ray or turn on advanced lighting(this in in max 5+). this will make the sky light work
