View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr. 9!
Michael

Today we try something more easy - the topic will be "Fantasy House". WE are to attempt to picture the witch's house. Description follows.
"The Hag's house"
" Everyone in the village knew where it was, and everybody would deny it, when asked. The house was in the pretty remote location, in the middle of a clearing deep in the forest. One path led to it thru the thick grass. The hous itself was not very different from the others - the hay roof, small windows, walls made of logs of wood. The house had one big room with a chimney, from which smoke was slowly rising. Next to the house was a lavatory with a bat shape cut-out in the door and a broom standing next to it. A bucket, some herb-sacks hanging next to the house door... and ordinary house. But there was something about it, being overgrown with moss, looking old, but sturdy. maybe it was the door, that was half open... the darkness behind them was unnnatural. The more you tried to see what's there, the less you actually saw. But some could, though. When she let them."
Deadline - WNEDNESDAY ( as some people complained about the time limits ) the next week. The prize for winning the challenge is Texture CD of your choice. I hope you find the description easy enough :P ;)

I may have a go. Depends on whether I get this College Essay done or not...
Nice setting and descriptin as ususal Michael! Just some clarifications. Do we have to paint the inside or the outside of the house or an angle that could fit the inside within the outside?
Fun paint to all!...
Ok first attempt! Inside situation....

Just as description says - paint the outside of the house with half-open door. Make a hint that something unusual is there.

Trkls, Thanks for your kind word that encourage me much:) !
here's my entry, I split this painting in a few days works, so I doubt this one can be called a speedy anymore:o .
but anyway, I quite satisfied with the end result, at least for my low painting skill I have now:o .

YEah Trkls, it doesn't seem too popular...Character concepting is not, environment painting is not.... :| don't know what to put up next.... maybe ble sky, trees and birds?... :P
Naw, seriously, all of the themes were taken or inspired from the input topic, that we have there... I don't know what theme to choose to liven up the things in here.... :(
Still I'm glad that some of you stayed with it :). You guys are evolving, great works from both of you. I'm gonna try and make one too :)

Michael,
I personaly love this topic, maybee its my background (not witchcraft :)). Unfortunately I can not enter every contest (same as 3d ones) but you guys are doing great job, thank you.
Maybee people freaked out by the "painting" part of it... Say you call it "Concept design"(sounds technical and dead but..) I dunno

here's my entry this week. Decided to try something a little different after my disapointing showing last week.
Sorry guys, I didn't have much time for this one but here is 50% of my contribution. Those are really sketchy! I know they are unfinished but better those than nothing, hehe!

I don't have any inspiration to do more; apparently I have no concept of evironment or atmosphere. Oh well, just something more to learn. (edit: although I think the outhouse came out quite well - lighting on it that is)
Here is a sketch, and here is what I learned:
1. The Pattern libraries under the Texture component in the customizing menu for paintbrushes. (note tree)
2. Some more of my pencil techniques transfer over to PS (note the logs on the structures).
3. I need to do the tutorials on 3DTotal.

Time for voting.

hmmm, i just found out that my monitor is adjusted to bright (saw the comp from other computer)... so to see my work normaly you would have to make your monitor much lighter...
1.Androgs
CHK your sketches are great, and I like the second one more (last one). (interior is great to, too bad it is disqalified)
Smack Monkey, I like the light from the house but i think bottom could use some details.(btw your biped characters were awesome!!! and the new vacume is amaizing (it seems like unconventional ideas are not favorable in 3dcomp but if it was democratic :>) you would have my vote)
Little Fish, its a good beginig, i like the logs and the door (shade looks great), and you should be carefull with pattern brushes, its not good if its to visible (same goes for filters)

1. Trkls. Love it, especially those tall thin trees in the background.
2. Androgs - atmosphere, lighting, everything (except the rock on the left side - it looks funny) is beautiful.
3. ...
Smack Monkey - nice thing with the volumetric lighting appearance, but the painting doesn't convey that much.
CHK - good sketches, probably the first is my preference.
Trkls - yeah, I know I should be careful with it, but it was just like a two-year old with a new color of crayon. don't see much application for Texture outside of texturing 3d models (some of them look pretty good when painted out and then the .psd file is fed through the Filters>Render Effects>Texturizer)
Thank you to those of you who contributed. The forum still lives on.
1-Androgs: I just love the lightings!those are just great!!! Any tips on those?
2-Trks: The mood is just there! It's so great also! again any tips?
3-Smackmonkey: For the originality! Where is the forest?
Anyway guys, great work!!!

1. Trks nice work
2. Androgs sweet lighting
3. CHK beautiful sketches to bad you didn't have more time. (BTW the forest is down below in the background you can kinda see the tops of some trees, the outhouse was there but it fell off the cliff in a hard gust of wind ;) )

1. Trkls.:)
2. CHK. ;) for the interior part.
3. Littlefish.:)
;) you all doing a good job, this thread is good for practising painting skill.:)
btw, Thanks all, for the comment on my work. :)
CHK, I keep the contrast strong, and adjust level for the final setting, so the light seems so pop out;).

Guys thank you for comments and compliments, CHK, I mostly use a lot of layers with different blending options (mostly multiply) painting main tone first and then adding details on the next layer, merging and so on. On the roof I painted single darker tone, then on the separate layer drew individual grass, blured tiny bit (another great tool), merged, on the next layer painted shadows that brought grass togethe and gave it more shape, multiplied, flattened. :)
hmm, for the thin trees: painted trees in couple of colors, just flat, on the next layers painted with with lighter and darker colors with dissolved setting on the brush and 25 opacity (which made a lot of dark and light alized specks), then vertical motion blur, and flattened (then darker brush to bring everything together and make shadows were needed.)

The deadline for Voting is tommorow at 12:00 GMT +01:00
And now a veery important question - do you want to continue with the challenges? Cause there are not many participants lately :(
If we continue - tommorow the next challenge :)
Corky13
07-11-2004, 01:40 AM
Maybe there arent much participants because all thematics are a bit time-expensive...you just cant make a sketch for a task like the scene in this challenge ore a action-scene in the last one...maybe more free themes would be nice...look over at conceptart.org and look at the themes of the DSG...very free to interprete....(excample= Son of Satan...some drawed GeorgeBush others a Baby-Satan others a Monster...)...
well short= More freedom in the task could bring more participants....but dont be angry if this is wrong *lol*

07-11-2004, 04:00 AM
I think this should continue, in a way great concept is much more important then the model, Corky13 is right, themes that are more open and simple seem to attract more people (lile the racing mashine of the future)

I agree, no need to end the challenegs due to a few slow weeks. Let's just see if we can iron out the bugs. Try a few more open challenges and see what comes of it.
LittleFish
07-11-2004, 09:18 AM
Yep, more is good.
I think the drop-off has been because some of us "regular" attenders/ posters have not been posting sometimes, so it doesn't attract too many new people. So, suggestions: (Please Read!)
1. Maybe put an Announcement for it in the 2D Forum. No wait, definitely.
2. It seems like the Speed Painting and Speed Modeling challenges should be, as a rule, be introduced on the 3DTotal Frontpage (as they have in the past during weeks with peak visitors and entries). And 3DTotal visitors represent more potential entries from 2D artists (and 3D for the Speed Modeling) who don't visit Threedy that often or ever.
edit: And if compared to last week, I think we came pretty close to bottoming out that week. So, what have we to lose?:D
Androgs
07-11-2004, 04:57 PM
continue!! this challenge really help to learn painting. I totally agree with Littlefish, put announcement here and there would be nice:D
about the topic itself, I enjoyed of being give a hint for the painting, it can simulate as we work for client or other. but a free sketch is also a good idea, just like the one at CG talk:D . so, maybe we can try the new free idea without leaving the hint painting for the other week?:) I meant use both of them by turns:D .
and another additional from me, maybe the topic itself doesn't have to related with darkness or evil again:roll: ? wanna try something different here;) .

2.CHK - 5 points

Guys, thank you for the vote :D Androgs its a honor to get a first place with you, your works are great!
It may be a crazy idea but what if:
to try to combine 2d and 3d competitions:
say 1st (2d) comp is really open(or more specific): design a caracter/car/building etc.
then winners sketch is presented for 3d competition: create a model according to the scetch (sketch from 2d comp)
That would kinda simulate work in a real company were concept artists and modelers work on each part. (3d modelers could be given more freedom from orig sketch, but keep it close)
just an idea
Michael

I already spoken with Andy about it... this would be really tough to organise, because what concepters take few mens/hours - like a character, for the modeller wuold be more time consuming - maybe even a week, so this is not pretty "speedy" ;). But maybe we'll organise something in the future... we'll see. :) stay tuned :)
Congrats' to the winners and thanks for the tips guys!!
I also think that we should keep the speedpainting going! It's good practice! We should think fast and make quick strokes! I also suggest to add the time spend on it like before as a rule so that we can judge within quality and timeframe! This will "force" us to keep our painting very speedy!!! IMO!:)
