is there a way to apply one material to multiple objects at the same time? the 'graph materials onto selected objects' doesn't work for me, don't know why, and the right mouse assign material only does one at a time even if you select more.

U have a problem thats for sure. U should be able to select all objects and then add the material u want by rightclicking and "assign material to objects". If it doesnt work then......???

Selecting your objects and hitting |Lighting/Shading> Assign Existing Material> myMaterial| does the job as far as I know.
Alternatively you could be a geek and select your objects and type 'sets -e -forceElement myShadingGroupSG' in the command line.
