View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr.10!

"So the battle continues" :D. Since there was very strong input about it - we keep on speeding:D and evolving.

As I want to be a man, that comes forward to expectations, this week and the half we will paint something... peacefull. Something ... divine. :), not evil :p

This we we attempt to paint AN ANGEL. This is totally free for interpretation :P, I just want to say that keep in mind a certain mood in it - this angel is really calm, good in every sense of this word. I would like to see the unusual concept of the angel, original. The white, loose clothes can fun too, though. :) But I want you to move your imagination... there were a lot of angels in the movies, they looked like ordinary men, they lived among them. If you go this way, try to capture the moment, when his true nature comes out, when he reveals, who he really is.

DEADLINE - WEDNESDAY THE NEXT WEEK ( 17th ). The number of entries - UNLIMITED, we want the quality, not quantity though ;). If you submit multiple entries - you have to decide which is VOTABLE/FINAL/Your Favourite, when the voting begins.

PAINT! :D

Ahhh yeah good theme...but hey maybe you should throw the explanation of the theme away and just write "Angel of Peace" or "Angel of calmness" ^^

Expect something from me guys ;)

Hello Folks;

This is going to be my first post here .. and I STILL don't know what I have to be watching out for.

This is a little sketch to the subject that I did while I was "MR.Bean"'ing in a museum.
The general draft was a very fast take.. but I must admit that I spent at least an hour to etch in the wings.

I don't know if there is a time limiting, but if there is: this was one and a halve hours work.
Not really how I would like the finished version to be, but well as I understand WIP's are welcome too.

It was hand sketched onto a plain letterpaper (I tried to size it under 600x800. Is there a limit?) with a standard ballpoint (Blue) and a FeltTip (Black) pen.
And just scanned it so far.
So if we are suppose to completely do it digitally, I can redo another entry.

Angel right?!! it's sometimes good to have something not evil just like you said guys! Peacefullness!...Aaaaaahhhhh!!! Should we time our work here so it will stick to the thread? IMO! ALso just specify the program we used. Ok! I'm sound a bit fussy but I feel that this is fair to now how much we spend on our painting since not everybody has got the same amount of free time right? Anyway just a suggestion!

Black: Nice start! 1 hour right!? Hehehe!..:D

Black
08-11-2004, 07:18 AM
No one hour and a halve.

It is fairly slower than what I would spend on a picture at this scale.
But well this ones feathers had too much detailings that took alot of my time away.

THAT was the part that took over an hour...
Are you mixing that CHK?

Well for you to better understand:
The girl and the general waves of where to put what lasted ten minutes tops.
I had alot of waves which looked like feathers here and there. I just realised them to actual feathers.
First withthe blue pen then the black felt

I especially have the 1.5 hour stated since I don't know if there is a limitation.

(You may not notice from this image. But no pencile was used. It was directly drawn to not waste too much time)

08-11-2004, 07:29 AM
ok guys. i'm in. heres my sh*tastic sketch. about 2 minutes PS. yeah i know thats pretty slow for what i actually did.

dont know if you can tell whats supposed to be going on, but hopefully when im done you can tell.

enjoiskating543;

Since you are in such an early stage, would you mind two cents?
It's not really a crit actually.

The general eye is used to reading from left to right (Even in cultures that write from right to left or up and down).
This is especially made used of in comic books. Like the "KAPOW!" always comes from the left since our eye adds speed to it.
In fine art artists generally try to have the light from the left side. because light makes thinner contours and dark thicker.
This makes it easier for the eye to view the whole image.

You just have to see on how you can make use of it.

As for your post:
Honestly I liked your composition alot. Your light and your features are all in right places. but the arc that your character makes will give you a big dark volume on the left side which can
take away from the dynamism this image is promising.

Please don't take it as a hard crit, or a "have to do".
As I said .. just my two cents

I AM curiouse of where it is going to as it is.

Ps: No, I would call it two minutes well spent.

Black, quote of Michael-3DT from the first Speedpainting thread (says it best): "Any medium is allowed. It just has to be in a digital form, so that you can post it here :P" really nice drawing, too.

thanks a lot for the c and c, Black. i decided to go for a different image though. so here is a different sketch. also the proportions were off in the other one.

Black - great feathers, lovely done, but the body is a bit awkward. The pose maybe... a bit unnatural...? But great work, though.

OK, here's my first attempt - chaotic brush strokes and poor value job... I have soo much to learn.... :)

Thank you very much LittleFish. And for your incouraging compliment.

So as far as I get it; it is tried best possible to not have any rules as to not restrict the creative process?

enjoiskating543; Personally I liked the elements layout of your first composition. But it may have been some dear extra work.
But I really liked what you are so far doing with the new arrangement

Thank you Micheal.
The feathers were my second go for a style I had done in the busstop years ago when we were still dates with my wife and I was for her.
(I am the kind of guys that walks around with a pen and paper and always draws).
She had me sit there for a little less than two hours.
I guess it was meant to have a good picture going.(I could post it, but it is not going to be competing)

I get your point about the proportions.
The stolkings and the way I scribbled on them (lost it) to colour it; make it difficult to follow.
I made this quick ref for how the skeleton would possibly be fitting (There IS an exagerated persp distortion)
Actually I think I am going to go for another one. I liked this one alot and would like to spare more time on it rather than to rush it to a dead line.
And I don't think I would like to colour it in

Washed up or not. I think that is a powerful image you made.
It just that it looks like the colours are all there. but aren't sitting with the right strokes.
We all have more to learn don't we?

Michael
09-11-2004, 02:38 AM
Added a bit of glows and more values... better? :)

black - powerfull image you say? :D Thanks.. Yeah... I need to practise colour a lot... Knowing the theory is never enough... :) yeah, we all learn for all our lives... :) And yeah - that the disproportion I meant :) Go for another one, yeah :D

...You just have to see on how you can make use of it.

I don't think I had set anywhere in the text that he should fit to a rule either.
The eye's reading path is a situation.
How to make use of it should be up to you.

I guess in your case: a series of obstacles maybe what you would preffer to make it harder for the viewer.
I can't say.

enjoiskating543

About the wing... it's nice.. but depending on what you would like to make out of it.
What you have here is a nice silky fur. Depending on what effect you want. It may fit in.

But I would like it if in the further stages you decide to add some more internal reflections to the colours.
Like you have a white and grey for the wings, headband and dress.
Flesh-Ocher, burnt umber, and I think sienna brown for the body.
Yellow-chrome and it's hue's for the hair.

They all stand out like seperate islands unrelated besides their geometri. This MAY be your desired effect.. like I don't know a Paul Gauguin type vividness.

When I am in the painting process of something such as feathers or fur. I rarely go into the trouble of drawing them one by one.
I sort do of what you have done with the hair or even the wing; but a bit more textured through how it reflects it's suroundings. So as to have a simple stroke ressemble a little highlight of a feather tip rather then the whole.
(By reflect I do NOT reffer to mirror reflection. I mean like how our flesh is highlighted red'er when it's shadow is next to another flesh)

Your post is coming out really fine. Your work shows even in such an early stage. I can't wait to see what you tend to do for the ornaments.

I have come up with a composition that I would like to go for. I would really like a calm atmosphere for that one so I'll probably give it a go on Wednesday or something.

Black: Thanks and sorry for the confusion! Your drawing is taking good shape! I'd like to see the final result!! Will you have time for some color?

Enjoyskating: Wow! impressive painting! I'm following your WIP!

Michael-3DT: Nothing but just WOW!!! How long did that take you? How did you achieve such great mood?!! Great sketch!!!

Ok! Here is my two cents: Hope you like it!
PSD CS/ 1h, many overlay layers...

Ibbo

My initial ideas for an angel...

Need to add wings (depending on C+C) and possibly a back ground!

Michael
09-11-2004, 10:24 PM
Humm.. a bit demonic for me.... Like she was possesed or .... have a black cancer like in X-Files :D...

Definitelly add wings and a background :D

Ibbo
09-11-2004, 10:57 PM
Heh, shows how its not the best quality image, but its not her eyes that are black, its mascara (sp?) running down her face from crying :p (she has her eyes closed)!

Black
09-11-2004, 11:53 PM
Mm now it has a much deeper meaning. I too like Micheal had thought it to be a black-Alien plague as in the "X-Files", or hollowed out eyes like in "Birds".

Now the image has a much more Royo (http://fnordfiles.rtfm.com.au/graphics/Art/Luis%20Royo/luis_royo.htm) feel.

You may want to refference how he has done the leeking mascara's. If you haven't already. like here (http://rivendell.fortunecity.com/redguard/636/royo/30.html) he has a close up cry with make up.

Actually his "Grey" series is a very successful one. Like this ad-version (http://rivendell.fortunecity.com/redguard/636/royo/25.html). Or this (http://fnordfiles.rtfm.com.au/graphics/Art/Luis%20Royo/III%20Millenium/3-grey_over_a_greyer_grey2.jpg) work where he finds a use for a 'known' oversized work of Picasso.

The quality of concepts is fairly high.. quite tempting to do more and better isn't it?

@Elven
i think you talking about me and Ibbo

Well i cant talk for Ibbo but i can talk for me=

Its kind of a Paradoxon. Peace cant exist without war. This two things need each other. So there have to be war if there should be peace...thats why my angel is crying. She cries aboput the fact that even Angels cant bring ultimate peace to the world...Utopia is impossible...

its a speedpainting challenge, and you have another week to do it. so i think you have plenty of time ;)

Ibbo
11-11-2004, 03:28 AM
Im agreeing with Corky here. Whilst his is an expression of this tradgic 'paradoxon', my focus lies in the consequences of an intervention to prevent this. My angel has tried to aid the human race by intervening, but because of this she has sacraficed an eternity in heaven. Thus, mine and Corkys themes are similar, they both revolve around the unfortunate equilibrium in human life, only my angel is suffering through material strife, unlike Corkys who is (i am guessing) experiancing sorrow in a more concious and emotional way.

So really, the themes are calm to the extent in that they are depicting a more subtle emotion, just slightly in a more expressive way... I think :p !

Here it is, its what im happy with even though i still think improvements could be made. C+C if you guys can (even though im submitting this as my entry). Thanks all!

CHK, I really like your idea I think there could be more detail , hope to see more soon,
I see some awesome work guys, you are inspiring me! :)

Ibbo, I like your painting but i think eyes could still get some work (it is unclear if they are open and empty or closed) if closed you can soften the top of mascara/shadow a bit and remove light line that separated mascara from shadow.

enjoiskating543,
Great work, I think it needs some color ajastment (grey color is a bit the same everywere) you can easily play with it in photoshop, creating a separate layer, painting it flat in specific area and then change the blending options, that way you dont have to touch any detail work.

Michael

David I liked your post ALOT.
I don't know how much it spells out the title... but it looks just great! I fail to grasp why you pleed your sorries.
Thats a fantastic catch.

NeoMax: if it's gonna make you feel any better, I don't have a wacom or any other tablet in that manner :)
(Wait does this mean I am out of the game? :o )

CHK: thats REALLY good. The only thing that keeps disturbingly catching my eye is the umbrella.
The manner the strokes drain down are very austhetique. Just try to picture it in a VERY large scale! It would really fit being hung on the wall.
Do any of you guys go through the trouble of printing out large versions of your works?

Ibbo_
as good as your post looks:
beacuse it resembles this girl trying to act in the series "Friends" too much...
I just can't manage to enjoy your efforts (Do I have to state how much I dislike her?)
But none the less the leek is much better.

To my understanding... crying fits within the title of being calm:
"..How she failed to prove them wrong with screams of violence.
When she just wept.
Calmly, silently.
So the angel broke her wings..."

I think I had better get my hands on my pen sometime soon. or begin to paint my first entry.

(yeah..again..I have to move myself more speedy next time :o...). The event is taken when one Angel told the good news to the shepherds about the birth of Messiah, and then followed by all the Angels singing praises glorify God.:)

any crits and comment are welcome for this one.

Anyways, this is how i saw it this time :D

hmm update: from dictionary.com :)

1. A typically benevolent celestial being that acts as an intermediary between heaven and earth, especially in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Zoroastrianism.
2. A representation of such a being, especially in Christianity, conventionally :) in the image of a human figure with a halo and wings.

Ohh boy.. Late again!

It's Wednesday already?!! :)

Well I was VERY occupied this week. Even though I had so wanted to spare some time I couldn't.

Well I am going to try and leave the afternoon for the day to start on everything I had wanted to do for the challenges. (Yeah I bumbed out on the modeling challeng aswel!)
Not that I haven't prepared anything.; I have done some test drives (As usual) for the other challenge and some serious thinking for this one. It's just that I haven't really done anything yet.

Well here is what I had hoped to go for this time instead of my first post...
This (http://www.zufuhr.com/images/india.jpg) is my influence picture.
My wife had come up with an idea of having a little girl dressed up as an angel (To reffer to the way they blend in between us) And I literally had a mental picture of how it should look.
It took me some time to recall that it was from this little picture I had recently come across in Alex's (http://www.zufuhr.com/bio.html) site...
I didn't know that he also had a personal website until I came across Zufhur in the search Engine.

I drew this in around an hour.. (because it was in between things I don't have an exact timing. But the pencile hasn't touched it any longer than an hour) Even though I literally scribbled with great speed (No earasers.. just light strokes); I am very far from getting anywhere yet.
The little girl is my little 'girlfriend' :) This weekend she drew a portrait of me (She is brilliant for her age) And this is going to be my getting back at her!

Well doesn't this teach me to follow up better!
Great job everyone!... Good luck!!!

well to answer trkl's question, yes i might bring this comcep to 3d since i'm learning maya now but i still gotta work in a few other characters, but if i do i'll defenetly show ya a final render.

As for my voting, most of the entrys were worth looking at altho most did not completly fill the specifications of the hole comcept " remember guy they wanted us to be a bit original and not draw angels the way we are use to see them"
any ways athink i'll have to vote for ejoiscating543 but only because of the technique used i think it was beautifuly done but id like to see something more original and for you to xplore your imagination " u got the skills man"

So I vote for enjoiscating543

I had been paying a visit here and taking a look at the entries as often as I was able to since the deadline was anounced.

I mearly judged it with the quality of the composition, and with what I would enjoy as a peace of art and didn't really go to the crit of neglecting any to be "Not fitting". Since even if you make a trash can it would fit in the concept.
When it is painting and art. I think the subject is more a point of influence than a limitation.
Great work everyone!

I don't know if I am allowed to vote in this one because of being late or not.
Though I don't enjoy the open vote method given out for us all to freely use, since rarely have I seen it not convert into a popularity contest: "You didn't vote for me.. I won't vote for you"

Well if my votes count. Here is my list:

David Ciprian (http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=266613) (Simple but fantastic)

CHK (http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=265385) (INSPITE the umbrella.. the rest looked very good)

Michael-3DT (http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=265263) (Yours was actually a tie with David's. But you were pushed down only from being the admin.. and the guy who founded the subject.)

And IF Micheal's doesn't count (I thought it didn't. I am just following up on Ibbo's voting) I would like to make my third vote be used for:

Undertow (http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=265063) (Fantastic mood, and a very successful depict. It was only that I believed a little more work was deserved on it)

Black - :p heh... My work doesn't count :D I mean it's not voteable... I hope you meant it too.

Neomax, gabcatyper, Ibbo - I made a sticky thread in the Speed Painting Challenges exactly to avoid this kind of qiestions :p ;)

Hey Black

I believe both of your 3rd choices are unvotable Michael's work isn't included in the vote (thank God) and Undertow's picture wasn't an entry just an inspiring piece of previous work.

Quote Undertow:
"well i done this a while ago so its not counted but thought i may post it anyway"

so pick another:D

Lol guess thats what happens whe you look at the pictures and forget what was written.

Feeling like those kids looking at the encyclopedia... Only for the pictures.

Thats true. It WAS only to show an old work

Well let me reward you with your observation then;

Smack Monkey (http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=267243) (I really like the effort you showed to introduce so many colours and textures to form the skinand everything else.
What kept yours back in my case was the 'just-done'ness of the halo and the sharp lines in the making and colouring of the eyes.
They took a serious amount off the cuteness as the halo took from the angelness.
I apreciate her. But having a hard time looking at her at the same time because of the twist te eyes create)

I actually didn't think Micheal was included.. thus I spilled my last option in.
I must admit that I was suprised to see him on Ibbo's list.
And so a work that good was worth mentioning.. admin or not :)

The reward your observation part was a joke... yours was next in line. JUST over two others

1. enjoiskating543 - nice, and great wings, although it is a bit lacking in atmosphere

2. Trkls - good, strong image, and good concepting

3. David Ciprian - I don't know why, it's just really cool to look at, with the glow and the fire and all - oh, and I was able to pick out the figure of the woman, and it is really good too, it is a bit of a shame that it didn't come out like you wanted it. it's in you though.

... and I'm sorry I wasn't able to get an entry into the running, but I did do one which I will post in a minute. I had my sketch of the guy on Monday (second day of comp) but not a sketch of the scene until Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, I started the coloring of the guy's robe (the upper part around his neck and the upper parts of the sleeves) and thought it looked good, with the Overlay painting of the warm gray background, and so I continued. But Tuesday only had 24 hours, and the rest is history...

...and here is my painting - with all its collapsed layers and palette because it's not an entry. I repeat, DO NOT VOTE ON THIS.

edit: oops, forgot. The title is "Angel of Death". and I took some sketching liberties with the later done parts just to make sure I would ever finish it.
