hi guys. its my first post here. i have just gotten vray for max6.
im looking for a tutorial regarding vray and photometric lighting.

i followed a tutorial from this forum that tackles with vray and hdri and uses iesky light. when i tried using the ie sky, the result was so bright that i cant see the object anymore.

i would really appreciate any help regarding this and photo realism as a result.

and one more thing, i also tried applying the vray/hdri tutorial to a non-spherical object, but the results arent as good as on a sphere. the hdri map dont really wrap the boxy object very well.

and also, is it nrmal to have the display message "hdr map not loading" ?

thanks so much in advance. hope you can help me

i have another question. whats better in your opinion? brazil or vray?

and

on which do renderers rely on more? video card or processor?

Brent

for me I like Brazil better.
I have used both but I prefer the Brazil because it will use scenes with using Max materials and vray will not do this.
Video card have no bearing on rendering
it is processor and available memory.

i see. so processor and memory is the key. lol

what specs of processor and memory is the minimum requirement in your opinion in running vray or brazil?

i prefer brazil for skin and human characters , also if i require a certain 'look' in a scene, Vray is lovely for interior becuase it provides a crisp clean showroom look to the renders.
IMO vray is more advanced.

Proccesser wise I would look at 2 ghz 512 ram as minimum, but anything above that would obviouslely be gaining speed on render time.

brazil reccommend pentium 3
or dual p3 is best
memory is 128mb ram 300 mb swap space
reccommend is 1 gigabite ram and 2.5 gigabite swap space.

but this is generalised
I use Pentium 4 2.2 mhz
I gigabite ddr ram

it works fine for me at this specs
some thing like caustic and sub surface scattering use much memory as it can it sometimes fail if not enough memory can be put into the render.
You can change your own swap file size it is also called the paging file or virtual memory.
But for 3d in general more ram is better:)

hi all..

i was trying to make something glow via videopost but the problem is : if I use the scanline renderer as standard it renders
and the object glows , but when I use v-ray to render it gives an error and max closes..

is tehere anybody who had the same problem.. or somebody who knows why this happens. ?

thnx

when you are switching to vray are you also changing materials to vray materials?
And also using vray lights?
Not 100 % sure but I don`t think the vray can render the standard max materials and lights.

The tutorial might be the newer version or just cuz u have the free version which might have less features.

Hey,
How come normal MAX lights (not Photometric) can't generate custics? You CAN set it to generate caustics under system-light options, but it won't generate any...only vray will.

because you have to use a realistic falloff for your lights. Switch the falloff to "inverse square" and crank up the light multiplier.

Sorry if this is annoying question, but is there any chance someone could briefly explain the benefits of using an external renderer such as Vray and Brazil? I understand that they make the scene 'look better', but I'd just like a quick rundown so that I know a little bit more about this before I try it out (I downloaded the free version of Vray yesterday).

Thanks in advance!

Some common questions:
how to use Vray?
what does a Vray light do?
how to use Vray mtl?
where can i get the Vray tutorials?

any answers?

Further to my original enquiry: Does anyone know of any reason why, after installing Vray (Free), the option to add a Vray Light would not be available? I've seen video tutorials and screenshots of the Create>Lights area, showing a Vray Light button among the other buttons (Omni, Spotlight, and so on), but it's not there on mine :(.

Thanks.

use the vray frame buffer.

how to use Vray?

Answer: Vray works like any other renderer. You just need to know how to use it.

There are a few things I set before rendering anything using it. I first turn off Default lighting using the tickbox under Global Switches. This turns off the standard Max lights that could illuminate the scene wrongly.

I then go to the GI section and of course turn it on.

I then go to the Environment tab, and tick to replace all the standard colours for reflection/raytrace that Max uses. I sometimes sett he skylight to 0.0 depending on what I plan to do.

I then go to System, and set the Render Region to around 128. I don't know if this has any effect on speed, but it makes it so the CPU has to render larger chunks in one go.

what does a Vray light do?

Answer: The Vray light is the light to use if you want the renderer to work as fast as it can. Its been programmed to use it, so if possible, use it.

how to use Vray mtl?

The Vray material is again something you'll have to learn. It works very differently to Max's standard materials in the way it handles reflections, and speculars, which are a result of reflections in reality.

where can i get the Vray tutorials?

Answer: www.vray.info has a lot of good stuff. The site itself can run rather slow however.
