High or Low detail?

Hi, I'm currently modelling an object with high level of detail in several areas.

My question is; how should I best model this object? Specifically, should I slowly model each part in detail or create a quick model and add detail later?

Any hints or tips would be great.

It all depends on you.
sometimes i model the basic shape first then go into the detail later, but other times i do the detail straight off. There is no hard and fast rule for this really it just depends on which one you feel most comfortable with.
If it's a face i would try to put a good amount of detail into it from the beginning as it may make the edges flow better later on.
If it's a car or something like that then maybe you can get the general idea before you detail it.
But really it's whichever best suits you, unless of course you have to get a concept idea to a client quickly before the final model.
