I've recently swapped out my old machine for a new one, and so had to re-install everything and copy over all my old files.
And now, 3ds max (4.2) wants to display the face edges on everything. This really bothers me, because I was used to working in 3ds without it, I don't however, ever remember turning it off before...
As you can see in this photo, its displaying all the hypothetical edges that divide the quad-polys on this box. This is exactly how the box looks after making it in 3ds. But these edges don't actually exist and can not be moved or otherwise edited with either an Edit Mesh or Edit Poly. These "ghost edges" are visible normally, except when edit polys or edges in Edit Mesh/Poly.
