hi i am working on a tutorial and it is creating a girl... it talks about some parts of the girl being smoothed with a subdivision 2 or 1... im assuming the number is the iteration on the smooth modifier... but does that mean certain parts of the girl are smoothed with an iteration 2 and others with iteration 1? if so then how do i assign different iterations for different parts?

Yikes.

If it says something like 1 or 2, that usually means that it can be one...or two- throughout. Unless you have a really simple mesh, there's not much difference between these options anyway. *shrug*

If you're still interested, you need to be working on an editable polygon object. From there, turn off all your subdivision options on the mesh itself, and select the polygons you want to be under 1 interation of subdivision. Then layer on a sub-d modifier from the modifier tab- and select your 1 interation options. Then uncheck the box that says 'apply to entire mesh' and that will constrain it to just the selected polygons. Use a 'select mesh' modifier and repeat these steps for the 2 interation part of the mesh. If you're just doing 1 and 2 interations, just use Ctrl + 'I' to invert the selection and make your life easier. It gets tougher when you've got 1, 2, and 3 interations to work with. Your brain leaks out your ears.

HOWEVER keep in mind that if you subdivide one part of the mesh one way, and another part a different way, you'll likely get crazy results at the seams. I'm talking broken mesh or pinching kind of problems. Test it and see what happens. = )

Good luck my friend,
