View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr.14

Michael

This week's topic is to concept/paint an illustration of a "mother nature". It can be treated literally - so the personification of nature's forces, it can also be shown as a calm, serene, full of life forest/meadow shot. It's totally free for interpretation.

Have fun. :D

Go!

Hey there, Victor. Welcome to the boards!

Great entry, man, I really love it. The planar comosition, the plants, the mood... :D

Hey guys - take an example and post :D

Well, okay...if you insist :o

Today is a day of firsts for me...first time I'm going to get round to posting one of my entries for the Speed Painting Challenges (albeit WIP), first time I've really sat down to some art in a while, first time I'm going to show it to people, first....

Anyway, I'll try to get some better quality pics for later posts... A3, graphite pencil, untainted by photoshop (ie totally traditional :p) couple of hours from conception to this point.

==>edit: blast.

The picture :grr:

Michael
12-01-2005, 04:12 PM
Good start, keep it going. I would try to bring it out in the Photoshop later on, cause on the image it's hard to see anything. :)

Lord Soc
12-01-2005, 05:21 PM
Thanks Michael. It is a bit pale at the moment....that's a combination of three things:

1: ancient digicam
2: less-than-desirable lighting
3: it's still very early on....just the general idea. Hopefully it will be clearer when more of the shading's been added.

:)

How much can you see at the moment (and on what type of monitor)? Anything?

Oh wow ive actually gotten round to DOING a sketch for an initial post. Still need to scan it, but im really trying to pull my weight around to get this entry in. Great posts Victor and Lord Soc, keep them coming everyone!

Not my luck today... I had my computer wiped because it was messing around awhile ago, and ive just found out i havent installed PS yet, nor can i find the CD for it!

Heh, heres a 'Paint' image of the sketch. Bear with me, this is just to show the style im aiming for. Its an earth elemental and im hoping to put him in a scene along side mother nature (He will be standing there, mother nature will be holding his arm... bah, ill show you guys later). Im going for a more comic look so it will be intresting to see how it goes...

I got a little free time in work today so I did this pic of Mother Nature healing a tree.

hello here is my contribution for the competition, a 10 minuts drawing of mother nature multiplication of species.

hope you like it .....

LoL, i like it Mosk. And Rob, thats a great piece but it seems that it needs to be a little more solid, maby some lines or something. At the moment it looks very faded and blured. Still a great piece!

I think this comp is like the speed modelling challenge in that only pictures created for the purpose of the challenge are allowed, so by that token I guess this doesn't qualify since I did this in my Digital Imaging class last term. I did however want to post it and see if you guys like it...I'm considering joining this comp next week if I have some free time.

Nice work from everybody so far!

Here is a quick contribution! ;)

What would happen if I submitted a painting that was really terrible? I'm rather bad at painting, and I'm concerned that if I do it will get removed by the mods for making this thread an uglier place. :haha:

Perhaps that's going a little too far, but the gist is that my painting is not as good as what I've seen so far. Should I refrain?

Thanks,

LOL mosk your drawing is very funny! I like your style... you captured the multiplicative reproduction capability of mother nature!....:D

Here is my work.
The giant mouse represents the dangers that fall upon our world, destroying it bit by bit... But mother earth is trying to resist the agression, will mother earth win the fight against the terrible mouse? I tried to capture the feeling of danger and uncertainty that lead our lifes these days, making us mourn and weep and laugh sometimes. I hope I have caught the feeling...

sorry bout my english...

i guess sketches don't really count, huh?

that's beautiful hpslashluvr; any chance you will finish coloring at least her hair and face and the little fairies, and maybe just blocking in the colors?

hpslashluvr
19-01-2005, 10:19 AM
I will, but I'm working on all these "real" art pieces for school...i just won a couple hundred for my art portfolio, and am aiming to get into a museum exhibit here, although I know I'd never win...it would be nice to say I've been in a museum in a major city.

Just a question, how long do these challenges last each?? I already spent prolly half an hr at least on the sketch and added cheesy "fairy dust"...not very fast :o

btw bluesummers, don't worry if your piece isn't "good enough," most of us are pretty new to 2d too and mostly do 3d...hopefully this challenge will bring out the 2d in us! :p

hpslashluvr - the challenges last week and a half - from Sunday till Wednesday the next week. The works that are considered speedpaintings take a few hours at most.... maybe longer, we won't disqualify for that. The main task is to.... pant. But I see that the interest with those competitions diminish more and more.... Today is the deadline on GMT 12:00 and we have so few entries.

Nice entries guys, if you didn't finish them - finish them within 4 hours....

Now...

Do you guys want to continue this further? Do you want to paint and have fun with it? Or shall we drop it? Maybe the topics are little interesting? Then post your feedback into the thread, I'm using the topics that are there, that you wrote by yourself... if that's not the case than... why there are so little entries? :( Why the interest is so little?

hpslashluvr
19-01-2005, 12:25 PM
i know, it's sad...AND there are prizes too! most places just give you a little jpeg file with an award or maybe not even that, just a congrats...

perhaps we should do monthly ones? like still speedpaints but it will allow for ppl who don't feel liek they have the time to do it during a certain week, they can do it later? i always find out about the speedpaint topics like when i'm busy and the deadline is looming x.x;;;

i think that ppl on threedy just feel like they only can do 3d...and not 2d...i mean i can't draw really to save my life and prolly a lot of other ppl are on the same boat...but hopefully we can try.

maybe do a little "advertising" on other forums too...i wouldn't get too discouraged, if you check out the daily sketches on cgtalk, sometimes they get a lot and sometimes they only get like 5.

Michael
19-01-2005, 12:31 PM
The advertising is there in the 2D section as a sticky... And monthly... I don't think it'll work... I mean - ppl will see that there's a whoole month to make it, so lot's of time... then the deadline comes and... bam. but I want to have more feedback on this one... what do you say guys? It's week and a half now... wanna more time? I'm affraid that it would die completely and everyone will forget about it, when it's on monthly basis, but ... what do you say? :p

hpslashluvr
19-01-2005, 12:34 PM
hmm...jsut as a side note...what do you do as a job? (nice site, i was just looking at it and wondering.)

serialinferno
19-01-2005, 12:42 PM
i personally like the week and a half time frame. gives me enough time without allowing me to get lazy. and i totally love these challenges, keep up the good work everybody

ROB
19-01-2005, 05:52 PM
I actually like having the shorter time because it then forces me to get the painting done and also if I'm not too interested in the topic then I don't have to wait very long for the next one!

Gerbilho
19-01-2005, 06:31 PM
I think this week's theme was not very interesting... sometimes too much subjective or too much freedom is not good...

Is the deadline over yet? I want to participate.

Mr. Bluesummers-3DT
19-01-2005, 08:23 PM
I would like to participate in the 2d competition, too. I ask that the rules stay the same for some time longer so that more people can get interested in it. This, of course, recycles back to the original problem of 2d being under-represented in forums.3dtotal.com and 3dtotal.com. One look at the name will tell you that there is a bias toward 3d. I brought this up in another thread, and it sort of stopped there.

http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25194

Gotta go, class is starting!

Michael
19-01-2005, 09:15 PM
OK, the deadline passed - as I wrote for quite a few times :P  the challenges start on Sunday, end on Wednesday the next week - they start and end on 12:00 GMT + 01:00. But I always start a bit earlier and finish a bit... later. To give you more time ;). So... it's TIME TO VOTE!

if you think the theme is not interesting - PLEASE post your suggestions into THIS (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?threadid=22340&pagenumber=3) link.

Although this is a speed painting challenge i would like to add the point that most 3d users will visit this kind of thread just to see what can be done, we all use photoshop or some other paint programme for textures or such like and this thread is great for ideas on shadows and how to actually go about painting etc etc.
In the end a 3d model really can be benefited from good perspective or artistic interpretation.

my votes this week go to
1. hpslashluvr... cos i can see the way this image is gonna turn out and for such a basic drawing there seems to be a lot of feeling in it.( I just love the way that a basic drawing with a splash of colour can evoke feeling..)
2. CHK for the fact that my eyes wander all over the image to take it in, i'm not drawn to any particular point .

Sorry I didn't have anytime to do this painting this week, I have been really busy. I think the contest should be two weeks long to give more people time to finish their paintings.

As for the subject I don't think that it is that broad, the subject was to draw what you think mother nature looks like (was my idea by the way). Anyways I don't think some people on here really understood what the subject really was. This was a real change from the usual subject of warriors fighting, or aliens or anything like that. It was a subject you had to really think about and I don't think people like that.

well, it *is* up to the individual person to decide on what to draw...we might interpret it differently from you ;)

elvenartist

Yeah I understand that, but for example how does a rat chewing on the world show anything for mother nature.

it seems pretty obvious to me....we're ruining the earth.

#2 : CHK
#3 : Not sure, not enough really, how about gren lady on page one right after victor farat's submission?

CHK

1) Victor
2) Serial Inferno
3) hpslashluvr (pity isn't finshed!....:()

I personally think that the subject was rather easy. Each of us may have its own representation of mother nature. I my painting I wanted to have something colossal against tiny people taht we are. I think for such goal it would need more details and definitions...But speed painting it is...!

1-CHK... Cool, reminds me of a Zelda game
2-Victor... Reason i diddnt vote it as number 1 was because it was a bit predictable, but still a great piece
3-Hpslashluvr... Cool concept, will we see it finished?

1. victor farat - gotta love that background ,too
2. CHK - solid entry (yeah, kinda like the Deku Tree - only bigger, and with more worshippers)
3. mosk - because its a fun interpretation of the brief, and fits so well in with "mother nature"

hp -- looking forward to a complete entry from you next time

GuyBlueSummers -- (hope you see this) There is no such thing as uglifying this thread - its a challenge. If you have a painting, by all means, contribute it. That's just about how it works.

3 - victor - the most complete

I'll join the next one! And this time I'l make a better one... (not that the giant mouse was so bad...) :(

Oh I just read all the posts in this thread and I think the week and a half time is good, more than that would make people forget it. This competition has to be fast in all terms. I just found this a few weeks ago but from now on I'll participate in every one I can. Keep this going, it's going great.
