View Full Version : speed modelling challenge week 30 - traditional telephone

The "rules" are simple,
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for.
2, spend no longer than the specified time on the modelling stages then render the image.
3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc. Please post only one image per entry with a maximum file size of 100k and with the maximum dimensions of 800x600. This image should include at least one wire frame view of your finished model. Posts with multiple renders of the same object will be deleted.
4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure"
5, if your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable
6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
7, No limit to the number of entries each person is allowed as long as each one is a completely new model and not one that utilises bits of previous entries
8, No external links to pictures, they must be attached using the browse button and be no larger than 800x600 pixels and 100k. Any pictures larger than this or links will be removed as soon as we see them and the poster will be disqualified immediately
prizes of a 3D Total texture CDs to the best entrants. We'll judge it to avoid the voting process getting too complicated and winners will be notified by email.
so, here we go, with this week's challenge
deadline - 22.00 GMT Wednesday 19th January 2005
modelling time - 60 minutes
subject - traditional telephone
You may model any type of telephone EXCEPT a mobile or modern cordless phone.
You may use your own ideas/concepts or work from reference material but it must be a traditional telphone.

This should be another interesting week, and for the people who are using 3d max and are not sure how to go about the challenge, there is always the tutorial in the max help files "lofting a telephone"
I'm not suggesting you use this tutorial and then enter the finished model but at least it will give some of the newer modellers a starting point..
Hope you don't mind me posting that reminder Andy

good start - but I think the holes in the dialling ring are out of shape - perhaps you would have been better booleaning those?

being as it's your first entry (and the first one in this weeks challenge) I'll allow the fix - as long as it doen't take you over the modelling time, if it does then perhaps you should make another model along the same lines but improving on any little mistakes you made
nice subject andy! will be an interesting week (again )

With all the rights to do so!!
BAD Andy!.. You forgot to state the time and the software used!
Don't you ever learn?!
You know you would save alot of time wasted for the admins part if you would just follow up before you post an entry or at least just READ the rules before you enter the next time!!
This is an AID to the judges right? .. I mean the good judges would think NICE of me?:D

Well, I figured after my half-assed submission last week I would try for something a little more serious this week. It's been busy in the last 2 weeks school just started :) so that had to come first... But I had an extra 2 hours to spare so here we go:
3dsmax 6
modelled in 58 minutes
textured in roughly an hour
rendered in 4 minutes

Who are you reminding? If you read the rules, it clearly says unfinished models can be posted...That isn't a "cordless" phone, that is a phone missing the cord because it is an unfinished model.

you can use a spring dynamic object, make a line then add a *path deform modifier and select the spline move to path and play with the percent and thats it :)

My fav method is to use a HELIX (its under splines) and make it renderable.

14-01-2005, 11:57 PM
Dozer , I got it wrong. But I also didn't said that unfinished models cannot be posted. Anyway, thanks for correcting me.
Cord You can use helix, just make radius 1 and 2 equal. But using spring dynamic object method as said earlier by DESPISTADO is more flexible.

I'm not good with english, and I'm not sure of which you ask to me.. :o
are you asking about its operation??
If yes, I'm not sure how it works, but I think where you pick up the speaker (on the left), the rod that holds it pull up and you have connection.. you can't appreciate it on the pic because is too dark but look in the wire ;)
To your question, I think yes, it have a dialer..

i guess vladoportos mean that old phones usually had a knob or handle on the side instead of dialer then you spin it and you have an operator asking for connetion :)

I have a question:(specially for you ANdy but anybody can answer)
whenever i model anything. most of the time I model my 'object' by only ONE OBJECT. I know that everybody is interested in the final output. Nobody wants to know that how many objects you have used?
But I prefer to model anything with single premitive. or you can say that I don't like to model anything more than one object untill it is necessary.
What do you think? This method would affect my modeling - in Quality or in Speed.

hey my second one here, modeled in 57 minutes.. (phonecord took me 25 minutes). Lightning and materials about 30 minutes. Done in 3d max.
does anyone know why photoshop always screws up the colours when you import an image? And maybe how to correct that? thx.

whenever i model anything. most of the time I model my 'object' by only ONE OBJECT. I know that everybody is interested in the final output. Nobody wants to know that how many objects you have used?
But I prefer to model anything with single premitive. or you can say that I don't like to model anything more than one object untill it is necessary.
What do you think? This method would affect my modeling - in Quality or in Speed.
and which method do you like?
I think this is to do with what you are going to do with your model finally! An object in practical like a telephone is basically built of many parts with various materials and textures. If I wanted it textured I would model with many primitives so that texturing would be easy. May again depend on what kind of primitive.. Nurbs, Poly or Subdives.. (I don't know much about 3DS Max)

when I first started out in 3D I was given some really good advice about modelling objects.
If you want them to look real you have to make them in the same way they were made originally :).
OK, you can't always do that but it's a good guideline.
Don't always work with just one object - it can really slow you down and impede your modelling.

Very simple but very effective entries there Mayhemation.
Not to mention the clean renders.
But just to get something clearer for us and actually Andy; are you saying that you couldn't model your first entry in the time limit and went on modeling? Or you stopped at 60 minute even though it was not to your liking?
Sorry to seem stupid here; but it makes the worlds diffrence;
Unfinished or not it is a great entry that doesn't deserve to be disqulified if it was done within the time limits.

Hi,
My Name is Shabi Mohan, From India, Kerala
This is my first model, i have studied every thing from many tutorial in 3dtotal, i just took 37 mins .
i used 3ds max5 for entire modelling, and use photoshop to present the projects with meshes. in 3ds max5 i used one box, one cylender, and sphere. i used spline as the wire.
i am not expert in light settings, sorry for that,
Thanks

This is a regular 1970's style trimline phone. Nothing as fancy as the old fashionned ones being posted here.
Done in 30 minutes with 3dmax using regular box modelling. Phone cords were regular max primitives and splines.
Can we change the model for a different one if there is still time left to complete it? I am short on time and if I get some time before the deadline I'd like to add in the buttons, the faceplate and do some other tweaks to the mesh. This should be easy to do with the time left that I didn't use yet.
PS.. I don't know why I put the cube in there.
Good luck everyone.

Hmmm...
There are several really impressive models here this week. And alot of new faces.
Actually I would have expected a few more entries than this.
I'll see if I can get around to contributing one. It seems that I would be needing an old looking phone.
Though I have never heard of what the tradition of a phone would be described as, I presume what I have in mind would qualify.

Thanks Andy for telling me the disadvantages of single object modeling.
Andy don't you think that most of the entries are of Modern telephone not the traditional one.
or it may be possible that i'm mistaking to understand the term "TRADITIONAL". but one thing is there evrey entry is one of its own kind. some are very great and some are with some lackness.

Haha, yes, it is my first complete NURBS model. I never liked NURBS very much, and always worked only with polygons. But the real secret to create this model was the simpliest: to plan before start working!

Well... I am not sure, and I do not speak english very well... so if I understood your question about traditional telephones, I would say that there is a diference between TRADITIONAL and OLD. Please, correct me if I'm wrong...

During experiment #426, Dr. Marty McFly accidentally misfired an experimental ray gun he was developing for an undisclosed toy company. The misfire bounced off of several raytraced models and ultimately hit his dog who was at the time answering the phone for the good doctor. Ironically... it was the ringing of the phone that startled the doctor into a misfire. (Fortunately... the phone still works!)

I think that nearly all of the images/models here fall into the "traditional" category.
The only real stipulation was that there was to be no mobile or cordless phones - we felt that they came too close top the remote control challenge we ran earlier.
As you know part of the idea here is to present you with a different set of problems requiring you to use varying techniqyes to solve them within the time limit each week.

here's my try this week. every time i enter one of these i feel worse about my entry, i don't know if it's because i'm getting more critical, you guys are getting better, or i'm getting worse. so here's my phone. that cool cord trick that i used to use in max doesn't work in maya, so if someone could give me a tip on a similar method that'd be cool, and if people just skip this post, that's cool too.
modeled in maya with polys except for the cord, two curves + extrude
modeling-60 minutes, would have been better with more time, but that's the point.
textures - what textures? this is a modeling comp
rendering - 5-10 minutes, just a sky dome plus fg in mental ray so you can see the whole thing (wires are tough in maya, funnily enough)
sorry i'm a little down right now, c&c welcome. i probably know most of what people will criticize already, but i'd still like to know how to improve.
Marty_McFly-3DT
19-01-2005, 10:39 AM
Hey deadplant155... I don't know too much about Maya... (being a 3D Max user) but here's a suggestion. If you still have access to Max... create bounding boxes in Maya that simulate the basic shape of your phone and then export it. Then import that into Max and then do your neat wire trick in Max and when you're done... export it. Import your neat wire into Maya and scale to fit. I know that's a cheap suggestion... but it's all I have to offer. I've done it a few times if I knew I could make something faster in Rhino than in Max...
By the way... nice phone, aside from the flat edges... I'd maybe add a few more buttons and maybe a little LCD screen for caller ID or something. Just some suggestions. :D

Since the spiral script models one for you.. I don't know how it should be allowed. (Same thing as the teapot.. infact it even has a morphable history) Same thing goes for max...
As a scripter I can just get into Mel and have almost everything set as tools for me to model impossible to do in an hour wheels, cords, keyboards, lego's.. etc.
To be on the fair side I preffered an extrusion with rotation. If it is still a bit complex for you; you could always download the bonus tools from the MaYA which have a spiral curve in it.
Hell if you haven't downloaded it still it's about time you did so!
Good luck all

Wow, it came out nicer then i thought... i found out that i prefer modeling my own designs rather then modeling from a reference pic. My first 2 entries were (sort of) modeled from a refernce pic, but not this time :p! I just did some quick sketches, and started modeling... I wanted to add some more chrome, and some more detail, but my time was almost up... but well, i am kinda proud on how it came out :D
Modeling time - 60 minutes
Mats - Lights - 30 minutes (1 skylight) I have some more renders with different materials...
Render time - 3 minutes (the mat version, clay was 1:30)

sweet, thanks for all the responses.
thanks for the suggestions marty. I had more in mind for it, but i just ran out of time, had to start over on the handset part of it, and i porbably should have restarted completely. the face for the lcd screen is there, there's just no texture so it's hard to see, and more buttons were intended, sorry.
thanks also to marty, renz, despistado and black for the tips on cord modeling. even if it's something i won't be able to use for one of these competitions, it's great to learn new things. thanks a lot. :D

sadly ( or not really depending on your point of view) i might not be able to compete for a few weeks as work has just piled up and i really need to get on top of it all, but it's good to be getting paid for work at last...

Modeling 60 mins
Texturing 2x2 hours
Rendering less than 15 minutes
Done in MaYa and PhotoShop
Will probably be doing more for the texturing later
The wire for the cable is not too vivid in this optimised image... Sorry
EDIT:
I have updated the image as mentioned, the new stats for the new post would be;
Rendering 1 hour
Postproductio 20 minutes
Nothing (Including testures ... to my distaste) has been changed.. just the lost camera angles and the optimisation quality
The first post can always be reviewed from here (http://users.telenet.be/Black.D.Greatest/Threedy%20Speed%20Modeling/Posted30_TraditionalTelephone_Teleph.jpg)

i never thought you would be asking if you could re-post an image cos usually your posts are top notch and well thought out before hand.
and as i said a few weeks ago i really like the style you lay them out in. it's definatly your trademark !!!

Andoy you are always so fruitful on compliments.. Thank you very much as I am very flattered.
But there are many that deserve simiallar recognisions
I actually had a go at the model yesterday.. The blocking for the base was a real pain in the arse. There was no preplanable/repeatable system that I was able to find.. finally I just went with a cage and used sculpting tools within MaYA. The rest was (proudly presents) prepalanned well.
My problem was with the texturing.... (I sort of messed up)
If you take a snapshot of your UV and then apply this as your transparency map you get a nice wire fame render much like that of Max (which basically works in the same manner).
I over-wrote the tex files with trans files. And honestly.. alot of work had gotten into the textures.
So I spent the whole evening redoing them.
And well that got me to REALLY rush things through..
I guess you missed out on the weeks I started the modeling texturing AND renderin/pasting one hour before the deadline.. THATS what I would call rushing

I'm sorry, we have gone as far as we can in helping you with the time.
On the first challenge page (where all the challenges are listed) is a GMT time convertor so you can work out your own time in relation to GMT
at the foot of each of the forum pages there is a clock telling you the time
you have a computer with a clock on it
One of the aims of these challenges is to simulate "real world" environments - speaking from my own personal expaerience I seldom get clients ringing me up to remind me of the time and give me a countdown to the deadline.
If you want to enter, it's your responsibility to get the model in on time.

There has been alot of new participations thi week. o if you don't mind Andy I'm posting this in again;
It is very normal for you to be excited or want to know the results fast.
But please DO NOT ask when the competition results will be posted!
I know it may be new to some, but to those (Like Andy) seeing a post asking evry week gets a bit annoying.
The results will be given out in due time. Check up on here on wednesday evenings GMT since it is when Andy usually tries posting the results.
