After making the "VLADOOM" i was thinking to make a new more complex character enspired from the "Panzar" project.
Here is a sketch of the head.
Tomorrow i'll send the sketch of the body.

Uh oh... proportional issues, sigh such a nice drawing dude, The legs are WAY to short, unless you want him to have short legs, also the arm seems a bit stubby :(

i agree with above post.

The hands (if held straight down) should end mid thigh, and the legs should be 1.63 times the length of the torso

Guys that's a quick sketch...
That doesnt mean that i'll make the same anatomy...
Anyway...I started the head.

A superb model and awsome modeling. Only crit posibble: the troll looks more like a human (barbarian if you like) than a troll.

damn dude! you know how to model! and how to draw (apart from the lil legs :P)

Thanx guys...but i'm not the best modeler here. :)
There are still many things i need to learn, to improve my skills...

Now i'm gonna make a simple body with detailed arms.I'm thinking of taking the body from an old character and also the arms from "Vladoom", but i'll change them a bit
After that i'll start modeling the armor...

Hey this is awesome, but i would say the only thing that is kinda weird the chainmail shirt i think ends a little too sharply! maybe see if you can have it end a little more choaticly.

Rych: Dude i havent finished yet that part. And the puted that texture just to look different from the rest objects.

I'm thinking to texture him and maybe to make a pose of him.
Right now i'm making the thing on his back and starting the helmet.I'll keep posting...

....and i'll try to change a bit his face for more trollish looking..

ColeKindred
22-01-2005, 09:43 PM
I think you have some texture stretching on the sleave. you may want to look at that. NICE lighting. :)

Avatar-3DT
23-01-2005, 01:48 AM
dlavre, you are a great modeler and I'm sure I'm speaking for everybody here when I say we would love to see this gone further, into texturing, rigging and, why not, a good, impresive animation. I see you followed Cemre Ozkurt's tutorial "The Viking" and I think you did it justice. Personally, I would have enjoyed to see more of yourself in this project, a tad more spike to your character and, since you called him "Troll", what you invision a troll would look like. But maybe this will be your next project. Until then, all I can do its congratulate you for a good model and to wait for your next work.

shiroii
23-01-2005, 04:40 AM
Hmm, why did I miss 3 pages?

Very nice work, but I must agree with the not-looking-like-a-troll-part. You can make it look like a troll with textures etc, but in my opinion the geometry must already be trolish. You shouldn't need textures to see that it's a troll, it must be obvious just by just seeing the silliouet only. It looks too human, more barbarian like as mentioned before, which might make the character less believeble. If you'd animate this guy, big change people will expect him to be human, maybe Lotr huruk hai-ish, but not a creapy troll.

If you do an image seach on google for "troll" you'll get waaaaaaay different designs then yours, the art is in getting to know what's already been done, mastering it and get a personal design with your own style. In your case, you've got quite an impressive model but it's not convincingly a troll and therefor it's unright to call it a troll IMO. There are certain aspects that people expect to see in a troll and you either got to play along or enchant them and make them even better.

Of course I don't mean to minor your skills and I know it's kind late, but I just wanted to point this out and get it of my chest. Again, nice work :)

ColeKindred: That's only a simple texture without unwraping...

AVATAR - 3DT Thnaks man for your kind words.:D
I have seen that tutorial (viking), but i never did that model, or learned from there either.

And as i said in some previous post, i'll change the head when i complete all the armour parts.
As for animation, its very hard to animate this kind of character because there are many objects on his body such as clothes, chains...and i'm not so good at animating( i can learn but i dont have that time...).

The only solution I can see for now would be to delete your faulty posts and repost the stuff connected with your user name. That you can do it yourself, without the help of a moderator. i gather you used smooth on the axe. this ight thgen be a dumb question, but im allowed to ask them since im a n00b:P

ok, how do you get those straight lines on the back with smooth? do you out a few lines there so that those are smoothed and the big surface isnt or something(if you follow me :P )?

I agree very nice axe. But for me anyway I don't know how practicle it would be to have spikes in the middle of your handle. Limits the function in some ways I would think. I like the spikes just not sure on the placement.

NWH1983
20-04-2005, 07:13 AM
Maybe it has an ergonomic ruberized gripped. "Ribbed for their Slaughter" ;)

I'm not sure this is a small 1 handed axe. It could be a large axe with a GINORMOUS blade. I'm dlavre will make everything clear in his next post.

Tank[NL]: I dont know for sure what you're saying, but if you ask 'how do i make sharp edges while using meshsmooth?'....Just chamfer the edges.
Anyway i'll post it with low poly so you can see it better.

Avatar-3DT: The axe is 2 handed.
The axe looks small by it self, but if you compare it with the character is very big.

Woody: thanks man...What wires?

For the handle i have puted 2 iteration(turbosmooth) :dunno: Forgot to change it(smooth for nothing).

The chainmail and leather textures seem too clean compared to everything else. Some rust and stains would help balance them out. The eysockets of all the skulls don't seem dark enough as well. I think they would be much more effective visually, if the sockets were dark inside.

The quality of this piece is astounding dlavre. The expierience you gained texturing your beserk really shows. It is really on a profesional level so far. I'm speechless.

I've tried... i've looked at your images for entire minutes... but I can't find any crits for your moelling! And it's pi**ing me off. :) :) Superb, simply magnificient. NWH1983's right about rust and those clean belts of leather.
Hint: When I want a particular area darker, I place a sphere gizmo with a uniform black volume fog assigned to it. This way you don't have to redo textures & stuff like that. :)

Phynius Gauge
29-04-2005, 04:24 PM
Very impressive man, congratulations on making such an awesome piece and getting plugged. My only crit would be that the texture of the skull on his shoulder is inconsistent with that of the skulls on his chest and belt, which doesn't make sense, even if that one was cleaned differently there wouldn't be such a discrepency in color and light absorbtion as there is between the duo on his chest and the one on his shoulder. The shoulder skull material also looks kinda 'fabricky' imo. But everything else is top knotch and really showcases the skill that you posess.

Later :)

Freespace thank you dude  Thanks for the hint...i'm using 2 textures with noise for the skull and i can just select the polys(that i want to be darker) and aply them the same material but a bit darker with fade.
Phynius Gauge: Thanks....The skull in the shoulder has a simple texture(i dont wanted to look the same as the 2 other)...but i'll try to make it better..

any idea for the skin color? I'm thinking to put a brown color.

Tank[NL]
09-05-2005, 04:33 PM
he actually looks pretty cool like this, but if you wanna go brown, maybe a really light brown or something. maybe a bit greenish on top, if you follow me...

then again, the armor is also brown. it might make you lose some of the great detail that way.

I could see him either dark brown or pale white, with really harsh skin, mabe even some subtle green/purple tones to give him an eery troll feel. I'm ****ing impressed with your texturing skills...you're making us all look like fools :)

hmmm yes i'll try some brown dirty color with a litle green tone on the dirty areas.
thanks guys.
Phynius Gauge: Thanks dude...Look, anyone can do those textures. I have used only 2 images for the metal and 2 for the leathers then modified them with "dodge tool" and "burn".

Hey dlavre did u get formal training on 3D modeling/animation? What would you suggest one study, or courses to take to get seriously into modeling?

OMG... so nice!!!

I would suggest some very light, almost pale shade of brown, with some purple tones. Purple goes better because it can simulate a bit of Subsurface scattering, blood under the skin stuff. I think it should look pale because, in all the stories I read, the troll eather exploded when touched by the sun, eather turned to stone. So it must be a night creature. But hey, its your character, your call.

IŽd go for a pale skin with the veins giving a blueish tone.

Amaaaazing Update dlavre !!:D:D:D:

Yes, but if it were this easy I'd imagine everyone'd have monstrously cool textures such as yours :P

Thanks for the advice though :)

omauro: No man, i'm training my self. Yes i would like to take some courses into modeling and texturing. But for now it's imposible.

Freespace: No...just photoshop.

Thank you all guys for the support :smug:
Guys i was very very busy lately, but i've finished the 90% of the head. I'll add some tattoos and maybe some scar.

not that i have the right to crit your work as i am a lesser species but i think the textured head looks a bit too bright not sure if its the texture or the lights your model is wicked man keep it up

Avatar-3DT
19-05-2005, 10:59 PM
I guess some SSS will solve the problem of the shines. Personally I love the textures but I think the tatooes must have a bit more brighter colors. That scar is realy awsome. More like a crack. Brrrrrr!

He looks 10x cooler without the helm on.

I don't like the vein coming from the top of the head. It seems out of place to me. I do like the temple veins though.

dlavre
20-05-2005, 12:19 PM
Yoda: Yes, i'm using standart renderer with 4-5 lights.
Avatar-3DT: Thanks man
3dway: Well i dont know why i puted the veins. Because you dont see them when you put the helmet.

I think i'm done with this character, it's time now to continue the new character "Yarl".
Thanks again...
