View Full Version : Skylight "smear" - Max 5
Imageshack is being pathetic and/or wierd, so I'm having to battle to even get a picture in here, bear with.
Max 5, scanline renderer with light tracer. I can't seem to stop these revolting smears appearing across smooth groups on the more vertical surfaces, see along the skirt and rear bumper in (hopefully) attached picture. I've fiddled with bounces (which seemed to reduce the ink blot effect I've also been getting, sortof) and various other things which I can only half discern the meaning of, but I'm fairly stuck.
Anyone have any idea how to get rid of this distressing effect? It definitely seems to be a skylight thing...

Might I ask what your settings are
Sure, as many as I can find hehe.
For that shot, something along the lines of;
Scanline render, filter is Catmull-Rom (I like the edging)
One skylight, anywhere from 4 to 10 car heights above (experimentation...) intensity I think 3, no idea what the ballpark of values there is, I just mess from defaults.
Light tracer, 1 bounce (only just tried that)
Those materials are all just default greys in different tones and specularities, and the sheet metal has a painted greyscale with gradients and lines (still does it without)
Environment ambience and skylight are a reaaaally pale/light cyan type colour, pretty much lots of defaults.
Can you tell I don't know which are the important settings and which aren't? ;)

Ok I got some of the info I needed ;) In the light tracer rollout, I cant remember the name of the settings but I think its sampling or something near the middle of the rollout it has like 16X16, 4X4, etc.... tell me what those are set at
:D
Ok, we have;
Adaptive undersampling checked
Initial sample spacing; 16x16
Subdivision contrast; 5.0
Subdivide down to; 1x1
Show samples unchecked
Cheers ;)

try 4x4 or 2x2..better quality but higher render times
The placement of the skylight dosen`t matter.It has the same effect no matter where it is in the scene.

hi,
if u want to put like this skylight effect and u can do it without that skylight and light tracer settings. All u have to do is make a sphere of instance directional lights and turn on shadow for it;lower the multiplier;turn off specular etc etc.
than u can get the exact result like skylight.
if u didn't get me than follow this tutorial.

Ok, I'll give it a shot, thanks all very much, and for the placement clarification too ;)
Cheers!:xyz:
Ed: Hooray. 4x4 = better, 1x1 = solved! :D
