the free version doesnt have the vray materials and less render settings, so if you want to test vray's full capacity, download the demo version which is limited to 30 days. btw, if you are a student, you could also get a educational version. the educational price for one
licence of the VRay Advanced package is $250. Further discounts could
be made when several copies are purchased at a time.

I used Mentalray and even Default Scanline with max for 6 years. I then got Vray, and my renders looked so much better within a couple of weeks. It's incredible.
