Well... I had some technical difficulties with the render. Each time I rendered the scene with the glass... everything under the glass barely showed up... so I had to settle for a render sans glass. I did include the glass in my wireframe though... since it was actually modelled. I'm no Otacon... but here goes... :D
3D Studio Max 6, 55 mins modelling, about an hour texturing (many experiments and test renders), 9:04 min render (default scanline render with 1 skylight and 1 onmi for speculars):
Edit: I've updated the image to now show the glass... Thanks to everyone that offered help in this matter! You guys all ROCK!!!

Ok, second entry over here.
Modelling- full 60 mins
Texturing- bout 5 mins
Render- 21 mins
Software- Cinema4d, Photoshop for textures.
That chain was torture, pain and torture. Well maybe not that bad,
but it took up bout 50 mins (had to place all the little toruses along the spline). Meh.
I'll find a better way sometime.
btw, great entries people. im liking some of the renders.

Hi Good Fellas
Let me first introduce myself so you folks know who i am. You might've seen me over at the Digital Tutors Forums often since im a moderator there, and try helping out as much as i can. I have to say i been following the speed challenges week for week now and this time i was very tempted. I finished a watch as well and hope you guys like it i will post it in a few minutes along with the wireframe etc. (I made sure to read the rules :D) Ofcourse i also have to agree that the renders here are amazing, especially that watch of andy's is purely "Ohsoreal" ;) and had me inspired of trying something similar in maya. Good Luck to all on this one and thank you for exepting my registration. :)

Ive made quite some watches this week... Most of them werent finsihed in the hour, or were just ugly! So i decided to do some pre-sketching again... This is what i came up with. Didnt had much time, so i kinda rushed it, and i really didnt feel like modeling the err... thingy that goes around you arm :p
well anyway, MTM is proud to present to you, its newest design:
The MTM Xd 242. Be totally the man, walking around in town with this nicely designed watch. Make your friends totally jalous, and watch the time, in style!...

marty.. i had the same.. the dark glass i mean...
what is ur light setup? cause to me it seemed like it happened when i rendered with skylight and light tracer...
i think the best way to render glass is with brazil, but i have absolutely NO skills at brazil...
i had to delete the glass in every single watch i rendered...:(

Let me see you what I've got.
software: 3ds MAX 5
modelling: 15 min.
textures/lights: 20 min 4 omni lights and HDRI
rendertime: 25,34
Been following you guys for quite a while now. Glad to get some time to participate in a speed modelling competition.
Marty_McFly-3DT
24-01-2005, 04:10 AM
Inspired: I'm also using a skylight with the light tracer... I also set bounces to 1 in the light tracer's settings because that's the the help file said to do when rendering glass. Actually it just says set it above zero... but each value above zero dramatically increases render times. :( Oh... and next time... just hide your glass instead of deleting it... ;)
fellazb
24-01-2005, 04:11 AM
I experienced that problem also. For me it helped to set up the first omnli light without a shadowcasting. The second, third and so on you can setup with a shadowcasting. Sounds weird, but it helped for me.
I used the default scanline render from MAX. Don't think Brazil is the solution to this problem.
Orkron
24-01-2005, 04:15 AM
If using Light Tracer with a skylight Marty, then u need to make an omni that only inculdes the obects under the glass with no shadows, thats what i do for good results.
Marty_McFly-3DT
24-01-2005, 04:20 AM
Well I'm glad that worked for you fellazb... but my omni doesn't cast shadows... *sigh* but you do have quite a nice render there!

Andy_k-3DT
24-01-2005, 04:27 AM
I'm not sure how Max materials work but do you have a value for "transmission"? this would effect the way light is allowed to pass through the object and is completely different (but not unrelated) to transparency properties.
Andy
fellazb
24-01-2005, 04:41 AM
Yo Marty,
I think I misplaced the word shadowcasting.
I've made a simple render with the standard "clear glass" material, to be found in your matlib directory in 3ds max.
If I place two omni lights in the scene with the shadow option on, I get a black glass appearance.
If I turn off a the shadow option of one of them the glass is transparant.
I think light tracer always works with a shadow option. My suggestion is that you place an omnilight in the scene without a shadow option. I worked for me.

how are you making your glass??? i want a glass that create no distortions but have good reflectios, all my glasses distort a lot the inside of the clock and i dont like that, any ideas???
Orkron
24-01-2005, 05:57 AM
It wont look like glass if it doesnt distort at least slightly.
Andy I think Max uses refraction map to do the same as what urs does...Could be wrong though...

getting good glass is always a challenge - fortunately it's something C4D does with consummate ease for the glass I used on my watch I had
colour channel disabled
transparency set to 92% with fresnel reflectivity enabled
refraction value of 1.25
reflection turned down to 5% with a dispersion value of 8% to avoid any "real" reflections
specular mode was "plastic" with a height value of 250% and width of 28%
If any of the C4D users want the material let me know

As promised here is my very First Entry, I enjoyed this one alot, and must say there is some serious competition here. I modeled out a Formula 1 Monaco from Tag Heuer created in the late 70's, My brother owns this watch and i couldnt resist modeing it out since i love it too. I noticed under pressure i wouldnt be able to model well and only got half done witch is the wireframe in different color, i modeled out the rest wich you can see on the mid bottom in red wich took a additional 90 min. This was a very good topic and I hope to participate more in the future thanks Andy. :) (Sorry that at this picture size/compression some color annotations one cant read ill make sure to pick better colors next time ;))

Texturing Time - 20 min. Leather Band Only rest Shaded

BTW, i was pretty exited about this topic when i first read it because i had just finished a watch model. Heres a render of it. I forget how long it took to model, probably about 2 hours, but might as well post it for some inspiration!

Wow Otacon really increadible looking renderer, same as andoy and andy... you guys do make nice images. I rendered out my watch plain software in maya. I own lightwave 7 but cant hardly model half as quick in it as in Maya. I also own a prehistoric Cinema 4D XL V6 package but i wont even start with that subject and leave it to andy. It seems so tedious to model in Cinema. I love all products so no discussion about this or that software. Just wanted to give my two thumbs up to Otacon - Andoy and Andys images, they are very inspiring and plain REAL looking. Ill try giving my Monaco watch that hdri look later Otacon ;) By the way you have a great living room very tastefull i really like it. :)

i dont know the why that happen but as andy say you can fix it by turn off cast shadows but no in the object properties you must turn it off in the advance lighting do this: select your glass object and with your right mouse button go to properties then go to "adv. lighting" tab then go to "adv lightning general properties" and uncheck cast shadows and thats it youll never see that black render again, just in case you have trouble with with reflection go to material glass and change the index of reflection to 5 you can play with this value, i never use light tracer with sky light, i like more brazil :) that never happen with brazil, another solution is that you use mental ray GI, i guess that happen due the glass material refract all shadows but im not sure. just in case you have trouble with reflection go to material editor and change to a low value like 5 the index of reflection you can play with:) if you still have problem let me know
best regards

It IS max..so there might be a diffrence..
But in the rendering of transparent materials, especialy if the matrials have refraction on them you have to put a higher refreaction and reflection rate.
What that means is the amount of surfaces you are going to allow the rays to be calculated.. in your case you have two surfaces til you get to the dial. and two surfaces for it to get bask to the camera.. something like 4 for refraction rays should be enough. How ever your compuer slows down you are sort of obligated to crank that up to get the effect
As I said. it's Max... things might be diffrent but I doubt it.
Juha So you did it.. Actualy you have managed some parts that I am now stuck on.. Your model looks great.
(Though I had hoped for some 'out of it' textures to complient it)
I didn't work on mine since then. Will porobably try and finish it today. (Textured hopefully)

I don' t know if it would be any help.. But this is a method I realised in the weekend:
To first create cylinder for the dial (Or Bezer if you have a diver-sort sportwatch) and then create one curve from the side with least buttons. Duplicate and flatten this. Array the center control points to the dial/Bezer; and mirror duplicate it. Then sort of adjust the side curve again to alow the buttons ports.
You are going to be getting two independent peaces from lofting for the two sets. These are going to be the horns.
Since you directly snap the curve to the shape of the dial in the very begining you already can get a nice curve surface.
For the inbetween I would set my tesselation to poly's... and extrude them to each other after I have capped and quaded the ends.
Hope this helps. I am attaching this image to help it all make some more sence.
Note that this is not software specific

Hi Colin.
The basic shape for my watch was created using a standard sphere which I flattened using the scale tool. Then converted to an editable poly.
The buttons, glass and side clips which attach to the strap are just extruded out from the flattened sphere and a meshsmooth modifier added.
The strap is just an extruded box primitive with a meshmooth added.
I hope this is of some help to you.

I could not agree with you more Black, i guess my earlier post was a little vague, I apologise to Kingcolin and anyone else if i seemed a bit offish with my answer.
What i meant was that i used the basic principle that Andy_K used only in max.
I started out with a cylinder, converted it to poly, selected the top poly, tessellated it, selected a quarter of the entire thing ( 6-9 ) deleted the rest.
extruded and bevelled the polys on the side to make the strap housing, chamfered one vertices and extruded the resulting poly to make the strap pin hole.
then added a symmetry modifier to get half a watch, then i used another symmetry modifier to get the whole watch. Collapsed the stack, extruded the polys to get the winder housing, Chamfered all the edges i wanted to stay crisp and added a meshsmooth modifier.
Again i apologise if i was vague and i agree it's great for us to share as we are all here to learn new ideas and techniques.... sorry sorry sorry guys..

Slightly off topic but I just saw an advert on TV (In Britain) for one of these magazine collection things that seem to spring up all over the place. (first issue £2.99, every other issue £6.99) which is a pocket watch collection, loads of different styles, a different one every two weeks. I might buy the first one as you get a watch and magazine for £2.99.
Lots of different styles of watch too, including some funky looking modern ones.
Just thought it might be of interest as so many people made 3d pocket watches (although the ones with the magazine look less well made!)

I usually just make them myself, i have a few saved that i modify too. Personally i would never call myself a good modeler, theres so many better modelers in these challenges. I just try to make up for that by showing my models in a nice render.

This is in MAX by the way!
1- Turn off the cast shadows for your glass object (object's property-clear checkbox for cast shadows)
2- Make the material like 10% transparent. In MAX its opacity, so lower values are more transparents, higher more opaque.
3- For reflections use HDRI. You could probably use a mix material too to combine an HDRI (I love HDRI) and a raytrace material to catch the other objects reflections as well. HDRI will ALWAYS render faster though.
I dont think Watch glass refracts too much if at all.
4- Try playing with the specular and shininess levels too and the amount of reflection (too much reflection may not look natural).
Loved fellazb's render a lot, very natural looking reflections there :D
Maybe he'd like to share how he did that
Well, this is how i've done mine :D
If anyone has another technique to make it more real, please share  , i'd like to know too :D

I will get disqualified, I know, but I can't help myself and I had to finish my watch for 3 reason:
- This is my first post ever,
- Is the first time than I model something with 3DMax,(usually I model with Autocad)
- Is also the first time I model something different than furnitures or building,
Modelling time: 1h 21m 53s (as the watch display)
Texturing and lighting: 45m (1 direct, 1 vray, HDRI, few object self illuminated)
Render time: 42m ca at 800 x 600
Software: 3Dmax
This was a very nice topic, I really learn a lot modelling this object.
Tanks you all 3dtotal staff

its not necessarily the render i ugess, but the strange aura-glow that lightwave adds to the render rather than typical raytrace, if i look at all of your teapots, watches and keys they all seem to have a fading glow around them, and i think thats what gives it something extra. lightwave must add that part in in radiosity.
also, i might hafta check out lightwave so see if i can replicate the effect in max somehow, i dont wanna use videopost :P

hi inspired! it's good to see you too! :) the aliasing i still don't know how to fix, but i'll try my best.
here is a glass mat tutorial i used for my watch. it came from here http://www.tutorialoutpost.com/count/1927
Press 'm' to open up the materials editor, select a sphere (any grey one of your choice). In the diffuse colour box change it to black.
In the maps rollout of the materials editor next to refraction click the box that says (none) and choose raytrace from the list. Leave the settings at 100.
still in the maps rollout select the box next to reflection, this time choose mask from the list. In the map box select a bitmap that you would like your glass to reflect. I used a picture of a restaurant dining room, since it seemed quite appropriate. Click the goto parent button (like a bent arrow, just below the spheres in the mats editor). Click the mask box and choose falloff, leave the default settings and click the apply to object button to apply it to your glass.
as for the lighting setup, i use skylight, 1 omni and 1 target direct with TD as the only light to cast shadow plus a target camera for the final render. I hope that helped. :)

I did this in 3dmax6, used about 50 minutes for modeling, textures and materials took me an embarrassing long time.

Mr. Lemon - would you be kind enough to share your glass mat in max? I really like the way it reflects light, and gives thickness. Thanks. :)

Hey people, some really great models.
Otacon- I was wonderin, do u know any good lightwave beginner tutorials?
ive looked on the 3dtotal site, and their not really what im lookin for.
Ive also found some beginner tutorials, but there a bit too simple if u know what i mean.
Yeah, that question was to every1, not just otacon

You might want to try these three sites to either start with lightwave or do some intermediate type projects.
www.3dbuzz.com ---- explains per video training the complete interface etc.
www.simplylightwave.com - nice projects to from start to finish check the free video section.
www.3d-palace.com - long term projects , hours of videos to downoad and a complete riggin tutorial per vts for lightwave aswell along with some modeling videos ... i for one to learn Lightwave did the Space Shuttle manifold
Those are great sites for video training thats free, for individual tutorials im sure you find hundreds of pages dealing with LW written tutorials.

Your model is very impressive and is definately 6 hours well spent.
One small crit is that your gears don't seem to match up. Sort of like as if you just had one gear and scaled it to a variaty of sizes... they look good but don't function.
VERY impressive models this week. (Great subject to begin with!)

Ok guys... I'd personally like to Thank everyone who helped out with the whole glass material problem I was having. In the end it was DESPISTADO's tip on turing off the shadow casting in the Advanced Lighting properties that made all the difference. (There are two different shadow casting options and it was that "hidden" one that was killing my render!)
Orkron: LOL... I really didn't want to say anything about your previous render... but I'm very very glad you "fixed" it! Much better now.
Vladoportos: Nice idea... but there's one problem... FREE TIME!?! What in the world is Free Time?

Gan3D to make sure you are in the entry it is most important to post a wirframe of your subd model... you might wann convert to polygons so that others get a idear of the mesh....well thats at least what i did.
After all the talk about the nice renderings in hdri and about the good looking glass i too went ahead and rendered out my previous Tag Heuer Monaco Watch Entry so consider this a final render also for inspiration, i hope it inspires someone at least. ;)
I hope you dont mind me doing that andy as i saw many artist doing the same. :) Hope you guys like it ... was messing with the reflection on chrome and glass all night long. Ill make another one now hopefully will finish in time only a day left in the competition.

My best advice is to use hdr maps on curved, or round surfaces...Trying to do it on flat surfaces is very hard to get a good look, I had to try 10 different settings to get that the way it looks now...Flat surfaces...I know you've gotten my hdr maps from my site, but have u gone to the tutorial link too? That's by far the easiest tutorial to follow -> It tells you step-by-step exactly how to set hdri up...my personal preference is to use hdri in the "envirornment" map slot rather than using it as a sky, that way I have more control over individual objects' maps. Hope this helps :D

I´m not sure to made it in time...
[EDIT - I´m stupid - thinking it´s wednesday night...
- so maybe I post a better render tomorrow...]
Modeling in Wings + UV Texturing
Ex- and import to AOI.
Rendering in Art of Illusion (Freeware)
with HDRI Texture.
...to bad AOI made an extra smooth on the mesh - to late to correct. (~ 10 min Rendering time)
Postwork (not much) in Photopaint.
ALL together in under 90 minutes incl. upload.
Modeling time 15 min.
Just did that because of the discussion of free software!
So to anyone who´s not comfortable with blender or likes to have a better Render engine than for example animator - with Photon mapping + Monte Carlo,
Soft shadows and caustics - take a look at AOI.

[2nd EDIT: Repost the picture - now it looks like a handpainted stonewatch - I really messed up that one with every other render:grr: ]
thax renz... im still little dissapointed cause i didnt finish my model,, i finished it afterwars, it took 15 mins to finish my model... havent rendered it yet...

Happy to help man. :D
Vlad, you are a gifted modeller and very nice person (in here) but I have to say I am troubled that you think that concept is "funny" .. I smiled when I first saw ur watch, then read the post and resaw the towers and my smile disapeared man...I know people who lost family and friends there (not mine tho) and they also would not find that amusing. I do understand that everybody finds humor in different things but I'm sad to know that is something that affects you in that way. Though humor is a good way to dull the pain of something, I feel (my personal opinion here) that any humor regarding 9/11 is in terrible (not poor) taste. However this is only my opinion, and that said, you did a fine job on the watch.
Be mindful of the_bully though. He almost died in the WTC towers on 9/11 I doubt he has any humor bout this either.

Looks like I'm the first to make a caculator watch! :)
60 minutes in max 6
shinichikudou: sure. , material that i used was a max architechtural brushed aluminium, i added that uvw box modifier for each part and just try different settings, two lights , one sky light and
one omni with raytraced shadows..
skylight value 1.2 and omni .0.50
and basic scanlline renderer..
so kind of basic stuff.
hope that helped...

Vidiot- nice model! awesome mats on that one!
Inspired, are you serious?
I guess this image is not a good representation - whether for me
and especially not for AOI. I should have done it better, but I was one day in the future and tried to to everything as fast as possible just to upload the picture before 22:00 GMT - so I deserve the result, but not the extraordinary software AOI.
It´s well worth a look - the material editor is a witch-kitchen.
All animatable and scriptable. Even the animation tools can be considered as "High End".
As I already statet - For those that are not going to be familiar with blender and it´s gui (though it´s getting better with every release) - you should have a look at AOI.
-------Comercial end -----------------;) -------------------------
@vladoportos: Your my "Artist of the week" - not only because your models and renderings are good, but simply the number of entrys is amazing.
Other models I like very much are from Orkron, Nojoy, inspired and Henry_B. I wish I had as much creativity and phantansy.

Nice one aesthetik,...
just 2 things:
- Your ambient (HDRI) has some artefacts in the reflections
(which is not realy a problem)
- you have to append your image since linking is not allowed.
Might be a good idea to read the rules on the first page again?

Yes... I too am glad to see H20 still making models for us to admire. Great model H20!!
Welcome to Vhector aswell... I was working on an hourglass watch myself... but I wasn't happy with the way it was coming out... Yours took a different approach... it's pretty cool. :)
And Thanks Inspired for mentioning my last watch... that one was very fun and interesting to make. My renders this week have followed more of the "pretty" or "realistic" type renders that I enjoy from so many other people here. Just an experiment to see if I'm actually capable in making a "pretty" render and not just a clay render! :D

My Breitling favourate the Chrono Avenger (http://www.breitling.com/en/models/aeromarine/chrono_avenger/) aeromarine model!
A true work of art that I hope to one day be the owner of.
I hope you like it as ALOT of work has gone into it. And unfortunately I won't be able to render my other less successful (to my opinion) models...
Modeling 60 Minutes
Texturing around 50-60 miuntes (Shader network)
Rendering 150 Minutes (11 rendered images where used to make this 4096x3072 image)
Done in MaYA
Postwork 50 minutes (Which was a tisk cause everything special about it is lost with the optimising)
Done In PhotoShop
here goes nothing...

Woow thanks guys! :o
Well I hopped you would like it.. but well this was abit unexpected.
Thank you
I think that I would have been able to model this watch in around four hours easily.. and with even better details. But just to model it in one fourth the time I had to get it out on about four DAYS (about 3 hours a day) and it was really frustrating that I couldn't do any of the nummerals by modeling, and that I had to leave out the nummerals on the bezer studs inspite all the retries.
(Thats also why I had some other watches aswel. It grew too frustrating to count the hour with this difficult task)
As happy as you have made me. There are ALOT of great entries that so equal my presented entry. The week was exceptional all together.
Good luck Andy!!
Note: I am keeping from setting looong explanations to how I did the model as I post them lately. Basically because I grew too annoyed by a dear few reactions... If you would like to know tips on 'how to do what' do feel free to ask me, I would be honured)

Hi guys,
I am not sure if I am doing this correctly. I could try again later.
Here is my watch.
It took the entire 60 min to model the watch. The bands took longer, and the texturing took about an hour also.
I built it in Softimage XSI 3.0 and rendered it in XSI as well.
I put all the images together in photoshop.

Hi Folks! This is my first time posting. I'm a newbie, so I'm having trouble with these speed challenges. It's good practice though, and maybe one day I'll be able to create a decent model in under an hour!
This took me 4 hours in 3DS Max. Let me know what you think.

the last models are nearly all breath-taking.
@Black - precision is your second name, isn´t it? `I really like your style of postwork.
@Mateusz: Someone asked it before, - i second this:
How did you do the chain? Awesome.
@Mimi - good to know you´re still around - I hope you´ll find some time beside your electronic lessons/self-education.
One guess:
I expect the next week to be harder, don´t know why...:D
What about Chromespheres on checkerboards?

Second entry, I´ve changed the render, but the model stills the same.
modelling 50 mins, texturing and lighting 2 hours,

Congratulations to everyone that took part if you haven't got a mention it doesn't mean that your model wasn't good so please don't be disheartened. Infact had we not raised the "mark" this week there would have been lot's more honorable mentions.

Congratulations Renz and Black your models were great indeed well picked winners and runners up, Andy, im sure it was very tough.
as well as all the runners up and honorable mentions ... this was very high class modeling challenge, too bad none of my 3 entries didnt make it anywhere this time but than again was my first challange, im hoping to get better and make it into one of the three categories eventually. I think the bar has been raised a little to high for me. It was alot of fun and great meating new superb artist.
Keep it up, i hope to be regulary here, and again awesome work Renz and Black ... they were along with n-e-gma's and Major Toms and about 4 Orcron models my favorite ones.

Congratz to Black and Renz. More for the trophy shelves eh?
Hi! just wanted to share my win with you all. Hope this is not a spam..
I want to share the blue print that i created for the challenge and the texture maps I used for TAG HEUER.yep this took me more hours than the modeling time.. :) if u like it I can mail u higher resolution pics if u need them. ( bkrpradeep@gmail.com)
I used CorelDraw to create them.
Thnx once again .. hope the LAMP contest is going to be one of the many best challenges, we will have with real good new entries and good renders.. yep this subject is a good study for metal and light.. TY

Nice textures Renz .... on my tag heuer i decided to model the whole thing out, including the Tag Heuer Logo, since it was a modeling contest ...
I shouldve went with textures too it seems, since i wasnt even mentioned. I thought both my models (tag heuer and iwc) was decent enought, but than again what do i know. ;) maybe next time. Critics to my models much appreciated:)

ok let's take a quick look at your images - never let it be said that I'm not open and fair in the judging
http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=293622#post293622
As your image says, all of the detail which would have madee this a great model was done outside the hour. therefore I can't judge it on that
why did you make the strap pins so detailed - they are not visible on the reference material and the fact that they are visible makes your strap model look wrong as it's too narrow.
http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=294428
much the same crits apply to your second model, take away the work you did outside the hour and although it's a good model it's not as good (in my opinion anyway) as those that got mentions in the final summary. Is it just me or are your secondary dials not quite round? They look distorted to me and that kind of detracts from the whole impact of the model.
There's something "missing" from both of your models, they seem to lack "subtlety" watches are light, delicate objects and the parts which make them always seem to look "fragile" your models didn't have that feel about them - does that make sense?
As I said in my summary. There were many very good entries this week and I had to be more critical in the judging - as standards improve this will become more and more neccessary. Just because you didn't get a mention should not be something to get downhearted about but something to inspire you to produce better models.

Andy thank you for your critics - comments....
I sure think your right ... the models that got mentioned where definatly modeled faster meaning within the hour and alot more detail than i reached. In time ill be able to work quicker.
As to being fragile, i dont quite understand as they are individual parts, but i think i know what you mean.
The reason i made the seam was because it was easy to do and i thought would add alittle visually to see those. The strap pins i made quite quickly and just stuck two cylinders into each other and a bit of rezizing. Im not that great in working fast and things like that i guess happen in the process. I have to work a bit cleaner.
I was just a little dishearted as i put many hours into it (rendering) and didnt get mentioned at all (wich i thought i would, not as a winners or runner up of course);)... however with your critics and words i do agree i didnt quite make it, and that the other models where higher notch, maybe I slipped right by from makingi it into the honors. Ill try harder andy and thank you for your comments, makes things alot clearer from hear and strive harder for the future. Best regards Nojoy
wasnt trying to wine incase it came over like it. :o
