View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr.15

This week I think will be interesting...
'The heavy clouds hang just above the ruins of L.A. The buildings, previously enormously tall and shiny 'cause of all the windows were now just bent, miserable skeletons. The higher the building, the mode damage it received. What was strange was the border of the damage made - everything above 10 meters was destroyed, below that the buildings were intact. Well... intact by the explosion wave. The walls were destroyed by the explosions, darkened by fire. Some of them were covered by crude graffiti, naming this area "propretee of the Snakes's gang". Some of the shop windows were "repainted", some shattered. Garbage was lying everywhere, Some car wracks here and there. Almost impossible to imagine, that only 15 years ago the streets were full of people, cars and... life.'
Deadline - as always - week and a half - Wednesday the next week - February 2nd.
GO!
Nice idea, lets see if i can get my finger out and do something this time!

Try to play around with the colours to accent the mood.

i like it, im starting to see it in mi head......mouses everywere.....heheeh
Aiii! My graphics tablet broke so im using my mouse. Hes a sketch of what im hoping to do. Its a push chair amist a scene of distruction. A bit morbid ill admit but its quite emotive in a way!

Yich. I'm so bad at this. It's my first painting ever, and I don't think it's looking too promising. Any scathing crits? I think this one's going to get blown out of the water.

more contrast, too dark. grey is a good undertone though, IMO
add some highlights!
and on the sign...try looking at a photo of a real sign...the lettering is usually diff

Good point. I noticed that the colors and blackpoint will be way off on other people's monitors because my color correction is not quite tweaked right. I saw it because I started getting banding issues on the dark values, and realized that it was because I was operating within fractions of hitting pure 0,0,0.
I took out the sign because it's so pervasive. I'll work on some highlights next. Thanks!

well, LA is my backyard, so I guess I could scathe the concepts of a few of you... but that would be pointless, so go to google, see what the skyline looks like (there's no good pictures of any of the rest of the city there - Hollywood and Highland (shopping - huge), the library area, downtown shopping at 7th and Figueroa, USC, UCLA, Union Station, Olivera Street - I wish I had had my camera some of the times I've been up there). I guess with the clouds, the mountains in the background would kinda be obscured.
Go look at the pictures of LA on Google though, and see what the buildings in the skyline look like - the library tower, and the BP building (used to be Arco Plaza before BP bought Arco), and all the dozens of others. It's really not that big of a downtown area, not that many skyscrapers; go more than a mile north, you're into nice houses; a mile west, same thing; a mile east, "less desirable" areas; and south, there are warehouses and shipping yards mixed with apartments and sweatshops (worst area of LA), and then farther south is South Central LA and Watts. A map or ariel photo might help give you an idea.
(and graffiti here is seemingly unintelligible, recognizable usually only by having seen the same tag a bunch of times before; sometimes you can read it, but not tags typically - just scribbles. oh, and gangs go by street names a lot of times, like the 18th street gang (20,000 members strong at last count, or something like that - tied to (as in run by) the Mexican mafia).
I'll try to get something in. As far as destruction, I'll probably use the WTC photos for reference.
I just couldn't stand! The description of the scene just pulled me into it! I had to do a quick sketch...So here is my first attempt!...Just for some inspiration!

but i thought all the buildings were knocked down? at least all the tall ones...?
Michael
25-01-2005, 09:03 PM
LOL, yeah :D:D It's a postapocalyptic - postnuclear scene . But looks good as always :D:D :P
The tall ones are indeed just a skeletons, the lower ones are good, but demolished .... :P

Destruction! There has to be destruction!... I have got to make a destruction scene!

Here it is. I finally made it. The giant rat is a symbol of the catastrophic effects of mankind on itself. The ruiners of the world try to stop the world from ruining them... its a bit philosophic but I hpe you like it.
My coloured and finial version!
this is what i got so far
will post the finished version in a few days if il have the time

Isnt that the same rat as last week?
So next time when its a "space exploration" it'll b a rat in space? lol
and when its "valentines day" it'll be a rat who ate all the chocolate? lol
Hold the phone, what about a black and while background (going a bit noir)? What do people think?
Michael
26-01-2005, 02:10 AM
Yeah, the noir version lookswaaay better :) . Maybe detail it more :)
Drakala - maybe stick more to the description? :p And paint a bit more serious attempt? :p ;) just a thought... :D

Hmph. I've been to L.A. dozens of times, so I'm not clueless either. I chose some downtown areas that are really pretty ratty looking. Mine is in the 'just outside of town' areas. :grr:

haha drakala, i think it's funny that you use the same main character in each one ;) it just goes to show how much destruction is involved in our world :D

GuyBlue -- apologies on the comments -- they weren't aimed at anyone; I had just been thinking about how the concepts would reflect the areas around where the artist lives, and then I was just giving a bit of reference to be helpful. And on yours, I think it's about like the area from 40th Street to the I-10 Freeway, near the rail yards. As far as crits on it, the only one I had so far was that the sky should possibly extend up maybe the height of the picture higher - just thinking about how the tall stuff has been made shorter, and so you can see the sky now...
Mr. Bluesummers-3DT
26-01-2005, 11:45 AM
Oh, okay. I didn't know where that was aimed, LittleFish . :o Glad we're still cool. :)
I'll post an update on mine tomorrow or Thursday, depending on when I get some more time to work on it. So far, I've put about 3 hours.
Till then,
nice work so far guys and gals.
here's entry.

Another rediculous post? Indeed. Here's an update of my first painting attempt ever. I tried to realign my perspective, which I think worked a little...ever so little. :blah:

nice one Psionic! (although at first I was confused about the broken telephone poles and the street, almost looked like a pier)
here's a quick "inspiration" sketch (sorry to borrow the term, CHK), figuring out a couple of things, like airbrush being good for smoke, etc.
edit: done with a mouse...

Some great pics everybody!!
I especially like bobjacksons myself, nice dark silouhette defining the foreground ruins.
Thats pretty cool as well ROB, sketchy but captures the destruction nicely...

I got some time in my job and made this in about 1:30 hours: (the building I was already making and decided to include - it will actually be built, but in better shape of course....lol)
After the destruction, and riots inside the snake's gang only one man survived. He is now the owner of the destroyed city... he's been alone for such a long time that he's beggining to lose his mind and act strangely....paranoic....

1. Psionic (second one, I guess - looks more post-apocalyptic, and kinda like a nice stretcho f the 405 down in San Pedro by the oil refineries)
2. bobjackson - nice composition, and some good bold colors.
3. serialinferno - I like the way the rubble and destroyed pavement was painted, and the rest isn't too bad either, but it is lacking in environment and lighting.
Michael
