Hi threedy.
I'm trying to decide on the best way to go about what seems to be a very similar technique to bump or normal mapping. My dillemma is this; While 3d modeled tyre treads look absolutely wonderful, a 25k poly wheel in a game will not fly. What I would like to do, for purposes of a nice texture, research, and some fun too, is attempt to find a way to translate the 3d modeled treads onto a tyre with a "bald" rolling surface, using textures rather than bump or displacement (game model - bumps unsupported). I had wondered about using texporter or such to get a "printout" of the tread's geography, to photoshop into a tread pattern, but would very much like to hear thoughts from more experienced texturisers and modellers on the subject. If you're a little confused why I would put myself through this rather than use a picture from a random source or painted myself, the answer is a combination of "the 3d tread looks really nice, and is my product, and I'd like to be able to use this method to make more treads in future" and "I enjoy creating cruel and unusual traps for myself".
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions along these lines?
Thanks for yer readings :xyz:
