i just started fiddling with 3d programs about a month ago, and i am using gmax right now. its a relatively small download so i tried it first.
the question is, i wanna try to use a legit 3d modeling tool, so which would you recommend? 3dsmax, maya, lightwave?
a few more questions:
1) what are the advantages and disadvantages of these tools versus each other?
2)i wana model for games, which tool should i use?
3)i wanna experiment with 3d shorts also, this time which one should i use?
4) so what would be the bare minimum system requirements to efficiently create 3d shorts?
thanks a bunch.

1) what are the advantages and disadvantages of these tools versus each other?
you could download the trial versions or ple's of these apps and have a look around and try them. then take the one you feel comfortable with.
2)i wana model for games, which tool should i use?
3ds max is pretty common in the game buisness, but they also use maya or lightwave - depends on the company.
3)i wanna experiment with 3d shorts also, this time which one should i use?
everyone of the application you mentioned can produce shorts.
4) so what would be the bare minimum system requirements to efficiently create 3d shorts?
get the best cpu you can afford (or better a xeon or something similar ;)) and atleast 1 gig ram, those parts are important for rendering times. a good graphic card is important for your viewport speed. if you dealing with lots of polys, then its quite annoying to work with a cheap graphic card. to work efficiently i would buy one that would at least cost around 400€.

hey thanks olli. wel i guess ill just have to bare the long wait time and download the trial versions.
but anyways to be specific.....
i was wondering what did blizzard use to create their wonderful cutscenes? is it one of the aforementioned tools or are they using proprietary software?
or for that matter, the likes of pixar, what software did they use?

blizzard used 3dsmax but all of the studios also have their own proprietary software.
Pixar uses its own proprietary software called Marionette, built and maintained in-house, along with maya, 3dsmax, houdini...
