i have made a watch and on the spinning dial i have extruded patterns to make like the numbers etc
the primary part will be silver and the extruded bits will be gold
im wondering how to do this
i understand some sort of grouping is going to be needed
i can select all the faces of what i want silver and all the ones i want gold, but i dont know how to apply different materials to different assignments
do i need to use UV mapping? or not
any help appreciated

check out the tutorial texturing sad mike in the 3d tutorial pages, it goes into quite good detail and explains exactly what you are trying to do...

ok that didnt really help all that much
got me no further than i already am
i have unwrapped my material
and have flattened it out and its in sections so i can just paint gold over one half and silver over the other
problem is, how do i export it so i can use it in photoshop?
then how do i import the painted jpeg back into max
i know i have to put it in the difuse map in the materials, but i dont see how it will know what face to put what material on
edit: also i would rather just use max to make my gold and silver textures, but i need to know how to apply the different textures to different faces on the one object.
ive got material id's set for the two different sections i want to texture.
but how i apply just to each id?
