Lol. had a go on that one on the projector challenge (http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=256806) :) And it was VERY fun to model!
But I guess mine was more a prop from the vintage "Golden-Age"Batman. Aa a few points were diffrent. I have alink to the refs back in that specific week.
I guess people just thought it was more a projector and didn't go for it. I really don't know. I hope it counts as it is very nicely modeled.

On the contrary! A colour does not get any better than Black! :)
If you are to use a Lambert shader you are going to have problems with Black. especially if you happen to go for MaYA's own software rendering engine. (As I recall you work in MaYA)
In your specific case (black hard plastic) it is a better idea that you set a Phong or a PhongE and have the eccentricity either really roughened through the dials or have something like a Noise or Browian assighned to its specularity to get that feel.
In any case, to use Black as a lambert would possibly only be visible if you give a ramp to it's sampler-info(normals); add a translucency layer and depth; orasighn a subsurface scattering shader found from the net or somewhere.
Your details won't really show othrewise.

I hope you know that Black doesn't have all the answers... :)
Well for a very short breif I can tell you that almost nothing can be 'Simply' deleted from the hard disc.
You have to think of it like a peace of stone that you carve a relief out of. Even when you pick up the stone itself the stone has a texture on it. When you carve something onto it it carries your data. And when you have no more use for that reliefe the data is there until you write on top of it.
Same thing with the Hard disks as they come out of silicone production. They may make no sence but the data is there. And unless it is over-written; a deleted file is just a sector that you can write on top of.
So thats why there are evidence eliminators out there that set your deleted bytes to a row of 1's or 0's or a randome set.
And just like a broken off carved relief you can end up with forensic evidence that could give you an idea of the information before it was removed.. what could be called magnetically foced out data.
Now as for your case there is no way I can really help you without sitting in that seat you are sitting now and look into your computer (Nope can't work through remote access) You are going to have to try out a series of software. The cool thing is that you can download a Demo for one and repair it and get it over with.
The points that you have to watch out for is "how often did you use those sectors since the corruption?" Like if you tried to do some recovery prehand or a scan disc or I don't know a defragmentation. Then it is most probable that that information is too deformed for anything to be done with. In this level you can't really talk to your computer with a translator but maybe through a compiler. And very rarely is it work worth the time and efforts.
There is a great range of programs out there and I am even sure there are some freewares too (None that I know of yet)
You may want to try out Unistal (http://www.unistal.com/disk_repair.html) which also has a recovery program seperate (I note again first thing to do is to try to recovern BEFORE you repair... BEFORE you dfrag.. even before you clean out free space!)
Or something like BadCopy Pro (http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/?rid=overture&kid=oc0101) That I know has a free trial option... but I have no idea on the success in recovering as it is in repairing.
Your just gonna have to do a seriouse research on the net so you get the best of ideas.. On a matter such I find it better not to advise anything and carry the guilt on my conciouse.
Juha
You know I have made it a tradition to somehow compliment your entries as you post! :p
Much closer to your 'Juha Standards' this time. it is always fun to see your extremely clean models.
Good one!
Everyone
How on EARTH do you guys expect Andy to judge all of this?!! You had better do your BEST to stick to EVERY rule and also your best to have perfection for even being able to get an honourable mention!
Cause you can definately expect this weeks judging to be alot more strict!
You have all done FANTASTIC work!!

This is the first time I post something on a forum and hope it’s good enough. I use max normally just to render scenes and not for drawing although I would like to learn it more.
When my renders take to much time at work, I regularly take a look at your speed challenges. I find an interesting concept and because the topic this week is close to architecture I decided to give it a go. The lamp is an old idea I never finished as a student.
Keep up the good work.

Cheers everyone!
As always, the images so far has been GREAT!
Even though, again as always, I have no chance of winning, it's still fun to submit the pics and maybe get some c&c's :)
Spent about 25 minutes doing the real modeling and then another 20 minutes just tweaking the details to get them a bit better.
Also the materials was kind of a pain in the ass, cause I couldn't decide what look I wanted :)
Went with this in the end:

Oh no I had not really meant it to sound like "hey I have done it and I was first" or anything...
I honestly had enjoyed modeling it. The way everything is in a center mas that you don't have to browse around for, And the manner most everything was able to be handled through extursions... For short it was really fun.
I guess another reason that I liked it so much was because the previouse model I had done was an R2.. okey okey.. the model I TRIED to do and failed extremely. You could always browse back on the competitions and see the works of many that have been here since even the first.
Having this said, I hope you enjoyed modeling the it as much as I did, since I have my doubts that it can make it to the title as a "lamp"n as good as it may be modeled.

Hey guys I've been so curious lately on how you make the lighbulbs light settings...
For example, in my model all I did was make the illumination of my white lightbulb 100... and then I added an omni by the lights.
Is that how it is done... or is there a better solution?

Hi there
Ive been watching these challenges for some time now and finally decided to register and give it a try.
This is just an old lamp that i found in the living room :D
Unfortunately, there was no time left to finish all the details.
I have added a Detail shot in the entry picture, i hope this is allowed?!
Cinema 4D R9 XL
Modelling about 55 minutes
Texturing & Lighting about 10 minutes, only 2 shaders and a random hdri
The render took about 2 minutes, and the detail shot about 5 minutes
btw: that is no mesh error in the wireframe, thats because i had to reduce quality to make the picture fit in the rules ;)
so here it is:

hi there this is my second post as a 1 month old newbie modeler.:D
its pretty simple....and not much details.
i recently acquired 3dsmax7 and am still fiddling around with it, luckily Gmax is almost the same as 3dsmax7.
anyways, ive only startedmodeling a month back and so i havent gotten into texturing and lighting yet.
so hopefully for my second post i'd be able to incorporate textures and lights.
btw hi and thanks to AzoiC and inspired for helping me out in my previous post.

My second entry to the speed modelling challenges. Didn't have time for last weeks helmet challenge but this time I promised myself to do one! As usual, I try to make something original and surrealistic.
This is my excavalamp. I hope you can see the connection between an excavator and one of those classical desktop lamps(see vladoportos model). Unfortunately I did not have time to do the springs for the lamp which makes the connection a bit harder to see.
I understand if my submission is disqualified for being too far off topic.

I am impressed...
I would have great use for it in my pipeline; but I have invested too much on a variaty of softwares 'MaYA dependent'.
And until the most of them upgrade their compatability I doubt I will concider affording an upgade.
I am sure you'll model faster now though.
& BTW, you might want to set your software used in your entries from now on. Infact maybe it's a god idea to go back and edit the rest of your entries. It is a rule.

So here is my entry, a Philips heat lamp that I have in my home, hope you like it.
Its modeled in just under 1hour, but the pre-work took me a lot longer, because I wanted to model it in 1:1...
hello Tojo. nive to hear from you.. long time no see...

thx juha, actually its an old one, but it IS modeled in less than an hour.
I´ve seen a lot of good models from u too.

I have no idea how some people find time to make so many models for this.. Good work all round.. to many good ones to mention names.. I noticed Evil-98 just posted his 74th model for this week...:p
Great work everyone keep the pics coming..:)
I got some new software so im going to play now..:D

This is Indian traditional Oil lamp which varies in sizes from 6 inches to 5 feet. It is made of cast bronze, hand lathed and can be disassembled for cleaning and polishing. This lamp is lighted at the beginning of a function for, light directs us in right the direction.
The lamp can be assembled in such a way that it can be made either tall or short. It can be hung with a chain too. This traditional lamp always fascinated me from my childhood.
Real nice models this week too.. some good lighting / renders too.
good luck to everyone...:)

hello everyone good models coming from everyone so far.
as n-e-gma asked me to show how i done the lower part of page 21's lamp model.
well i would gladly like to show with that model.but as my pc is slow(amd sempron :( ) and also i have done boolean operation on that model.(it took my 5 mins to be done).
here r links of some screenshots i taken.
http://jigu.actkid.com/image/tut1.jpg
http://jigu.actkid.com/image/tut2.jpg
http://jigu.actkid.com/image/tut3.jpg
http://jigu.actkid.com/image/tut4.jpg
http://jigu.actkid.com/image/tut5.jpg
well i showed it on my last blue color lamp model.
i first detach some polys as clone object.than extruded and made simple object;then aligned the pivot point of that "object" to the pivot point of that middle main cylinder object.now here comes the tricky use of symmetry modifier.i added above the messmooth modifier.rotated the gizmo of symmetry modi.do this process until u get the ring of that only one object.then apply the twist modifier at the top of the stack.choose Y axis to get object twisted.so that;s it. symmetry is more useful than that "lathe" modifier.
BTW , i will never do any boolean operation in future in any speed challange.because of it tooks my so time to be done for " page 21" model.:(
i hope n-e-gma and others can get me what i want to say.
excuse my bad english.

The wireframe doens't have the cord because I forgot to add it when I took the picture so I had to go back and add it. And it was pointless to get the wireframe picture again with just a extra thing added.

Been there too Kaze...I've had comp weeks where I submitted 2 or 3 at the same time because I couldn't afford internet at home...So I'd burn 'em all to cd and go to Circuit City and piggyback their wireless network from the parking lot...stupid fools don't even lock down their wireless network...So I'd be sitting in my car on my laptop submitting my renders :D

My post.
It's a street lamp based of Schouwburgplein Rotterdam (picture left/below).
The lamp is adjustable with a remote controle, the joints are pneumatic.
Put the streetlamp in a scene I'm working at on the moment. Lamp is modelled in 45 min.
It's not as beautiful as most of the others, but it's again a learning edition for me.

Looking excellent so far... Here's my first (and maybe only) entry:
A lamp powered lamp! The kerosene lamp generates heat to make steam with the water dripped out from the water tank. The steam heats the lava lamp to make the wax melt. (Whoops, where's that light coming from?)
Modelling: 54 minutes
Materials: 15 minutes
Render: 3 hrs. 26 mins.
Post in Photoshop: 2 minutes

Ok....
I need a favor from all of you.....
I need you guys to lend me all your lamps......
What for, you may be asking yourselves?
Simple, i was reading the SSS in mental ray documentation in max 7 and i gotta tell you, i've never read, in my entire life, anything so, so, so dark and obscure. :grr:
I mean, come the F*** on, its like, ok you have mental ray, one of the best render engine, but we wont tell you how to use it. :grr: Its like they dont want you to do anything with it.
Argh!! :grr:
Any of you by any chance have done anything with SSS in mental ray?

hey thanks orkron!!! u r very nice man!!!
i have just downloaded all ur HDRI. and also downloading this tut now.
As being a mental ray lover, i haven't learned it all.still learning.and never tried SSS in mental ray.As i knew only about it that mental ray has gr8 control over bitmap images for lighting and material purpose.
BTW, orkron i like ur idea about how u used wireless network.:D:D
thank you again.:)

hi n-e-gma, first of all you must know some basic stuff about sss, what is subsurface scattering? well all none metallic material are translucent in some degree, this mean that light scatter inside the material before being either absorbed or leaving the material at a different location, when an object is hitting by a light source from behind object you can see easily the sss phenomenon but if the source light is in front of the object the translucency effect reduces significantly. remember if the object have parts more thin than other that thin part will be more visible to translucent, ok with this we can work in mental ray, its pretty simple for test we only need use 3 parameters go to material editor and pick "sss fast material" create a teapot and put a light behind, look the image, the names of the parameter dont need explanation, scatter radius control the distance of the sss the rest of parameters is explained by itself, there is more parameter but they are more advanced and require more explanation, hope this help you.
best regards

Concerning SSS in Max or Maya
n-e-gma - this tutorial will show you the steps for SSS inisde of Max i found it a while ago and was sad because i used maya, it even provides the scene for you. Easy to compare to your work, and troubleshoot better.
http://www.3d-palace.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2863
For the Maya users look into this one here for instance, there are many tuts to be found for google on SSS and Maya, here a start.

Lol Nojoy.. With the variaty of links you are now bringing in and the 'Good' that Orkron has become..
I am assured that all the needs I full-fill are well covered! :)
(As unmodest as that sounded)
Thanks for the links again (this time for the forum); Doesn't Papa have a tut on SSS yet?
I remember the days we went crazy trying to get the look of a glass of milk that was the closest practice to 'skin' that we could think of. Now it's everywhere!

I agree though that this forum is one of the best that i've come across for helpful replies, in the sense that you are not waiting for days for an answer to a question.
No wonder it's going from strength to strength, what with all the helpful people here and the great/ varied topics each week.

Though I can always provide contact to those that wish to keep in touch. My modeling challenge days are really over.
My last entry post WAS my last entry ... and not just for last week.

I am saddened to hear that you are leaving Black. As thus, the Black side is depleted and can no longer continue as it once was. The powers of the White side will once again control the forums.
But seriously now, I think I speak for myself and everyone in saying that you will be sorely missed. If ever you wish to return, you know that the forums will take you back into their electronic bosom in an instant.

Woow thanks everybody!. I am really lost for words
Had I known it would be reacted to such... I would have stopped loong ago.
Actually I had set in my Entry post that it was my last. But since I wasn't too sure then, I guess I hadn't wanted to make it any bit clearer.
I have my own reasons. And of most important is the time I need for other things.
The forum and you guys are great. And my not attending will be far from any loss! I may not attend any longer.. but I probably will end up paying a visit now and then to disturbing you all!
In any case... there are many forums that I 'Tut' in.. you can most possibly find me again being a know all in one of them!
Soo will be seeing you around!

Hi all, nice models you have!
Here is my "swanish" desk lamp little late. I also couldn't finalize it in an hour so you can can freely disqualify me from the competition. However i wanted to post it here just for fun :). I worked on it for one evening. I'm not a pro yet so it took me longer to finish something.
Software used: 3ds max 7
Modeling, texturing and rendering: several hours.
I couldn't totally remove the green spots caused by Mental Ray's Global Illumination. I tweaked the settings very long. If somebody knows possible reason I would appreciate help.
Here goes....

" Black " by Pearl Jam
Sheets of empty canvas
Untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me
As her body once did
All five horizons
Revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed
Has taken a turn
Ooh and all I taught her was everything
Ooh I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands
Chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything
Oh the pictures have
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by
Some kids at play
I can feel their laughter
So why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin
Round my head
I'm spinning
Oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away...
And now my bitter hands
Cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures had
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
All the love gone bad
Turned the world to black .
