Not wanting to clog the forum with my situation I sort of kept from posting answers, but I would feel horrible to leae them untouched.
In order of apearence;

Juha;
I am as glad to have met you. And as you so well know: Our game has just begun.

H²O;
I shall have many models accessable very soon H²O, be they excellent or not.
Thank you for your kind words. Though I am just level with your presented quality of modeling

Shamohan;
I guess there is a misunderstanding. I posted a helmet for last weeks challenge. It was my last to compete with you guys. This week was way out of my league so I guess I stopped in time :).

3DJunior;
And I liked posting them. I have enjoyed seeing the distance you have traveled from your first posts up.

Nojoy
Thank you for your sincere wishes. You can always compete against me by only looking at my models at future stages. A simple conflict of "better" or "not better" would be enough to push a fruitful individual like yourself to press hard.
It shall not be difficult to find me shall you really the need.

Vladoportos
My ever talented Vladoportos.. you are one of the reasons I am leaving! :) You are simply too good for me to compete against!:)
Thank you very much for your affection.

Jdgill;
I have reaons as many. But nothing that should worry you. Thank you for your dear wishes and kind words. I am so glad to have been of help.

Raven2K;
dido

Barks;
We had good times here. We shall have good times still. Just diffrent ones.
I was able to see you upgrade to the level you are and I am sure not going to miss out on the even better modeler you are going to become. Though my return to the forums shall probably happen, my return as a contestant shall not.
This front is now in your hands my son...

Tornado
I really have no idea why. But I presume my path has been written to breath another day. I just hope I am destined to do a good with this chance given.

Renz
My dear freind Renz... It was an honour to compete against you at occasions more than one. Some are good people, some are good modelers.. and some are a bit more special.

Lestat
I am speechless. I never knew you felt such for me :o
Lol... I always had 'Paint it Black' on top of the list.. but I am now in doubts as this one now has a tenderer memory!:)
No I doubt I would have the need to come over to browse around in invisible mode.
I shall pay a visit at times. Your ever high wuality models are definately going to be one of the reasons that I shall wish to browse through the forum.

Inspired
Last but rarely the least... What can I say? Use the 'Black approval stamp' the best you can. Make sure that only your high quality creations get a stamp.
As for the crits and comments on WIP's... something tells me that I will be seeing them before I would have to find them on the forums :)

Everybody Else...
The individual posts were thanks to those that sort of 'pushed' me to reply... and for the most I am sure that they are not too alone in their thoughts.
Thank you all for everything; especially your company and support to make this thing what it is.

Please do understand that in order to not get an upsetting warning to carry this event to private messaging; I shall not reply to any further Goodbyes... Since this is a challenge thread.
But ofcourse this shall not mean that I am not gratefull and thankful to any of you...

Thank you all VERY much!
It was support that couldn't have come in a better timing. You guys all just ROCK!!

May the Black be with you!

Hello, I am posting some of my students work from a High school in Vermont. I would like any input from people that would use constructive criticism. Take in mind that they are to this new and only had one class (35 min) to plan and create these.

mdumontii:I think this post is in the wrong section. It should probally go in hte inorganic section of this forum.

The lamp looks alright. There isn't much of a texture. It could use some more light also...looks dark. If your class is gonna try working on it more...post a thread in the inorganic section. I'd love to see an update. It looks like they were shooting for a metallic look to. If you turn up the shinines up it will give it more of a metalic look. Looks great for only one class...can't wait to see em' work aftre the school year. I probally couldn't do that well with max after the first class..maybe...i don't know. I use truespace.

What program is your class using? I'm guessing Max.

Looking forward to updates if you have em, Josh.

I dont see where that would be a problem, i have seen people put their models in final before

jdgill
14-02-2005, 07:59 PM
that would be kinda stupid if they wouldn't let you post YOUR work any where else if posted in hte contest. I've seen people do it before...no problem.

the standards this week were really great so lots of you made it to the honorable mentions. Picking the winners was really hard but in the end we felt that these two just had the edge.

The sad thing is that even after these challenges have been running for several months and the rules haven't changed for a while we are still having to disqualify some great entries because people are not reading the rules.

Congratulations to all that made it onto the list.

Yay... a mention!!! Finally... a mention! Man have I been slacking lately. :roll: Seriously though... I completely object to Otacon winning this week. Although it is a speed modelling contest... he clearly does not need a texture cd... his models are always beatuifully rendered and even in his winning entry... you can tell that he has no need for a texture cd whatsoever! Disqualification because he's too good! And Juha... he clearly cheated... you know that his modelling time went way over 58 mins... it takes me 15 to model a sphere... and he has 5 of them! Just admit it Juha... cheater... cheater!

Now that I've got that off of my chest... congratulations guys! :D

as Black-3DT has already said the quality of models just gets higher each week. Far from being disheartened you should strive to improve. We were all at this stage at one time.

Before you submit your models look at them again, and again then see if there are any improvements you can make. On all of your submissions this week you had time to spare, time which had you used it may well have elevated your models to the standards of those that got an honorable mention.

Getting recognition for your work is not a right it's something you have to earn. You have improved greatly and when you commit yourself to the modelling the results are good. Keep at it and sooner or later you will see your name on the lists.

If you think that any of your models have been harshly judged and merited inclusion on the list this week please feel free to send me a PM with the details and I will reply to you telling you why we didn't think they merited inclusion in the honorable mentions.

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?postid=299742

you are kidding right?

something which looks like it was thrown together using the array tool and should have taken you five minutes not 20 - so why didn't you finish it off properly? add some trims etc. Have a look through the challenge, Otacon submitted a similar lamp that looked superb.

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?postid=298568

no easily visible wireframe, no mention of sopftware used and a very "ordinary" model. of all your entries it's about the best but was disqualified on the wireframe grounds. Before you tell me that there is a wire in the image - well, maybe there is but it's so small it's pointless and is not immediately apparent.

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?postid=300370

Apart from the fact the lamp looks top heavy and as though it would fall over far too easily the centre shaft looks wrong - take a look at a real lamp with a stem like this and the ends would enter the base exactly square, again it's down to lazy modelling and rushing the job - on this project you wasted 15 minutes

None of these models were quite good enough (in my opinion) and all of them could easily have been improved had you spent a little more time and effort.

Another thing you should consider is presentation. It's a modelling competition so you must ensure your models are visible. All of your renders are way too dark - if we can't see the images and the detail they contain then we can't tell if they are any good. If your renders seem to be OK on your screen then I suggest you check it's calibration as something is clearly wrong. there is a definite "right and wrong" way to set monitor calibration so it's worth looking at

Anyway, that has hopefully answered your questions as to why you weren't included in the honorable mentions. Take them on board and try a little harder, as you grow in experience you will find that it becomes easier and easier :)

There's an old saying "the devil is in the detail", in other words the more detail you put in, the more realistic your model will be. Please don't think you'll get away with leaving stuff out and that we won't notice :)

Soon steven stahlberg will come and try just for fun and all hopes of wins are over if the quality continous rising like this i might just have to find another dayjob. :roll:

I'm not ignoring you - I just haven't got around to posting a reply.

So,

Was your model good, yes, well, some of it was. As Otacon commented at the time the shade looked rushed and detracted from the rest of the model. It was a nice model but fairly simple and nowhere near as good as the one we selected as a runner up.

Close to winning and very good but sadly for you this week the standards were exceptionally high and the two winners just managed to add that little extra detail and level of "believability". all I can say is keep trying and take your time with the models. the ones you spend longer on invariably look better. Try also to look at the way you present your images. with a limited file size you need to go for maximum impact so don't clutter the space - just one render and wireframe is ideal and means you can have them both at maximum size
