View Full Version : speed modelling challenge week 33 - lamp
Andy_k-3DT

The "rules" are simple,
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for.
2, spend no longer than the specified time on the modelling stages then render the image.
3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc. Please post only one image per entry with a maximum file size of 100k and with the maximum dimensions of 800x600. This image should include at least one wire frame view of your finished model. Posts with multiple renders of the same object will be deleted.
4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure"
5, if your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable
6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
7, No limit to the number of entries each person is allowed as long as each one is a completely new model and not one that utilises bits of previous entries
8, No external links to pictures, they must be attached using the browse button and be no larger than 800x600 pixels and 100k. Any pictures larger than this or links will be removed as soon as we see them and the poster will be disqualified immediately
prizes of a 3D Total texture CDs to the best entrants. We'll judge it to avoid the voting process getting too complicated and winners will be notified by an announcement in the thread once judging is complete.
so, here we go, with this week's challenge
deadline - 22.00 GMT Wednesday 9th February 2005
modelling time - 60 minutes
subject - lamp
This weeks subject whilst not neccessarily easier is another that can be approached from so many directions and at so many levels we think everyone has a chance.
It doesn't have to be any particular type of lamp it can be a floor mounted standard lamp, an angle poise, desk lamp etc etc etc - your call, make it interesting
good luck and have fun

Just because something's been done doesn't mean you can't do it. With a topic like this there are only so many ways to do something. I encourage you to give it a shot. Hell...Yours might blow the other two out of the water. And thank you by the way. :D

Gonna try and get my head around True space this week so i might have a few posts later on if i get time.
It's looking like another great challenge again already ..
Andy: i'm going to be trying your tutorial soon so keep a look out for my e-mails if i get stuck, the interface does seem weird after using only max and auto cad before.
And in answer to your reply last week i do know the goose fair site yes, i used to do quite a bit of drinking round that area a few years ago. I was born in Rainworth and spent most of my life in Farnsfield near the white post, so just down the road from Arnold really.

Give it a go anyway :) The subject "lamp" is huge, and leaves room for allot of creativity.
To really have a close look at lamps and their workings, and of course also how, what kind, what colour, etc light the lamp casts. Is a great way to get a better understanding of light that u can take with u into 3d.
This is a modelling comp, but form and function in lamps are very closly linked.
Hope u change your mind. :)
I cant wait to se how this week turns out.

Have you tried just using box modeling to get the shape of the lava? That's what I did with mine. You should just get a reference of what you want the lava to look like and then box it out. :D Hope this helps.

Alright, here's my first entry this week. I did it on my lunch break at work (after eating and e-mailing etcetera). I only spent 12 minutes on the model, and another 5 to render. It's pathetic, but i feel like i'm missing out by not entering at all in the last few. so i figured it's better to enter something with the small amount of time i have than just not enter. Okay! Thanks to NoJoy, I now have 5 (more coming soon) ldr image maps available for download from my site in addition to the 15 hdri I had already :D.
For anybody who's unsure what these are; hdri = high dynamic range image.
and ldri = low dynamic range image.
Both are great ways of producing relistic metal, plastic etc in the texturing process.
So first go to my site at www.orkron.com, and if you would like to learn how to use them, go here (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/contrib/tutorials/gabry_hdri_tut/_contents/) for the easist hdri tutorial on the web! Also 3dtotal has an hdr tut too thats good but because of their restrictions I can't hotlink to it.
edit: The LDRI maps cannot be gotten anywhere, so I suggest you take advantage of their uniqeness while you can!
edit#2: Ignore the HDR Shop part of the tutorial...I've already changes the probe images to flat images for you.

@Orkon: what is the main advantage of ldr image i newer heard about it....
Orkron
04-02-2005, 05:04 AM
I was able to get similar results either way.
I think hdri has more light samples etc makes the image "dynamic"
and the low ones are panaromic still but don't have the "extra" embedded into them.
The reality is, hdri maps cost more usually than ldri, from my site theyre all free. The advantage of the ldri I have (courtesy of NoJoy) is that they are maps you cant get anywhere yet...and theyre really good.
Mainly, they are ldri because when I try to convert them to hdri, they go from 2mb to 14mb......so thats a no-no.

And with this you have held the record on 'breaking the most set of rules' GiJo3D... So far the only unbroken one is stating your programs used!
I think you may want to read through the rules once more. It would be a tisk...
Orkron

specifically rule 8
8, No external links to pictures, they must be attached using the browse button and be no larger than 800x600 pixels and 100k. Any pictures larger than this or links will be removed as soon as we see them and the poster will be disqualified immediately
oh ya and rule 3
3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc. Please post only one image per entry with a maximum file size of 100k and with the maximum dimensions of 800x600. This image should include at least one wire frame view of your finished model. Posts with multiple renders of the same object will be deleted.
edit: btw Andy has said that 600x800 is okay too, which your second image meets that criteria.

Here a is a links provided to show how you can go about producing LDRI yourself.
The downside is that the effect wont quite look as good ... the nice part it renders at only a fraction of the time compared to hdri and the outcome can be supurb ... reflections will still be very nice etc.
http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/hdri_tut.html
showing how to create your own LDRI using a mere metal sphere
http://anti-matter.co.za/Freelance_HDRI_Services.html
a nice article explaining in detail different hdri creation possibliities and on the very bottom talks about ldri
Usually you see the same HDRIs currently in most cases being used since the mojority of users grab em from debevec so here are more sites i found that offer HDRI images for free download
http://hdri.3dweave.com/library/
Here is another one that uses a special software in combo with the riight Camera you can produce easily your own maps. He offers lots of HDRI on the bottom of the page to download along with tutorials for each major software (way on the bottom)
http://www2.cs.uh.edu/~somalley/hdri_images.html
I think this will do for starters, and keep you guys busy HDRI wise for a while.
Only nice things about my images that i gave Orkron is as he stated not hdri but totally unique especially the convert hall one is stunning i think.
Hope this covers the complete HDRI topic and Images one can need. Hope you dont mind me adding this pages Andy

Just I wanted to post it tonight.
Tonight I will render it with a mental ray- and make the lighting hopefully more appropriate.. I didnt have time to show you this, but I did make lightbulbs and such...
Unfortunaly.. I picked a really bad angle. haha... oh well.

your lamp texture is a thing but you should pay more attention to your light setup.
In the photo that you posted the upper part is a reflective material and bellow look like the same material maybe with a little of glossines
the light setup show 2 white light boxes (you could try to make 2 boxes with withe color and 100 self illumination)

As I understand it HDR images cover a much wider spectrum of colour and lighting data - they are 96 bit as opposed to the normal 32 bit and contain data which exists in our normal perception of things but not in computer simulations or phtographic reproduction.
They are created from a series of images using various different over and under exposures to simulate that wider data, as we already knew, the data is not really recordable by camera in one image so HDRI takes a bit of a guess by combining a series of 32 bit images to generate the 96 bit data.
From what I'm reading Orkron's LDRIs are really just panoramic photographs which can be used in any application as a background or global shader.
They'll never have the same dynamics as an HDRI (as Orkron aid there are less samples to work with) but for the most part will work pretty well if you are using Image based lighting or for reflections.

Here's my third entry and in the spirit of competition my model also massages Andy's ego. I'm not sure how legible it came out so I'll just put in that it says "Huzzah for Andy". In recognition of his fine efforts with this forum. And for putting up with all of our crap. :D
Modelling: 45mins
Texturing: 5mins

Post Number three, hunteryri beat me to the first sort of this design. I modelled it at school and then sent it home to texture/light/render because my school comps are painfully slow.
Anyway, i wanted to go into some more detail, but i ran out of time
60 minutes

i'm kinda curious though, the speed modeling challenge has been here for a while, what if we up the stakes a little as well as the challlenge...
it just popped into my head, but something like a speed scene rendering challennge...? maybe something like 24 hours and going from concept to completion (posting it all)
don't get me wrong, i've seen some amazing entries and i wish i had the confidance to do this myself... but if the stakes were upped, it could also be some great portfolio work too *with some cool swag*
dunno, just an idea.

My trial period of 3dsmax ran out. so for now I had to use bryce 5
Bryce 5
Every thing except for the photo shop cut and past wire frame second angle 29 minutes
P.s. this is modeled after a touch lamp I have on my desk.

the speed modelling challenge works so well because of what it is. At it's simplest level it requires an hour or so of your time to complete it but that doesn't stop you taking the model and refining it a little for your portfolio - a couple of the members web sites are composed of speed modelling challenge images.
Making it any more complex would kill it. What is a fun thing would become serious and we'd have to write and enforce a whole load more rules which was never the intention.
Speed scene rendering puts some people at an unfair advantage, which the modelling challenges do not do we allow render farms to compete? do we insist that everyone has the same spec computer? how do we check these things? Read through the rules and you will see why we discounted the idea of speed rendering.
Texturing, lighting and rendering your final image is something you would seldom scrimp on or cut corners in a real world environment which is another thing we try and simulate with these chalenges. The model may be required quickly to show to a client but the finished article may take a long time to be completed to everybody's satisfaction.
As for cool swag - we hand out texture CDs to the winners each week if we have to start gathering prizes from software manufacturers or outside sources it becomes immensely time consuming.
I think that it is popular how it is now and changing the organisation would probably make it less succesful. May I suggest that you read and understand the concept behind these challenges and maybe join in the fun and informal atmosphere before asking to change something just because?
there is an old saying which applies here
"if it ain't broken don't try and fix it"

well bully, there are currently 13 texture cd's available, and you've only won 3 in 33 weeks, so you have at the very least, 10 more weeks to try and get to that stage...but by then, there will likely be another cd to win....
