View Full Version : SPEEDAPINTING CHALLENGE nr. 16

Michael
06-02-2005, 04:40 PM
This week's challenge will be to illustrate following description, concetrating on the either the asteroid entering the atmosphere or the impact itself :

"The "Orpheus" - cause that's why the NASA called this meteor particlarily - seemed to move very slowly. Maybe because it's size was so enormous, maybe because the only point of reference was the Earth itself. The fact was, that it only SEEMED to move slowly, he was accelerating. The nervous man on the news said, that the size of of the meteor is about the size of Australia and he is about to hit the center of Texas. Orpheus was said to be even bigger than the asteroid that caused dinosaurs to die.
The view was incredible - a giant fireball entered the atmosphere, pushing the clouds down, making the sky red. The trail rose after it, covering the sky. An armageddon was upon us.

And then it hit the ground."

Have fun.

GO!

Photo manipulations are mostly used in matte painting. We'll get to it later on :). Maybe even in next challenge :).

You can use the photos as reference, but it needs to be hand painted :).

I like the fireball effect you've made :). The clouds are a bit off, but it still looks cool.

ROB
08-02-2005, 09:02 PM
I was trying to portray that the meteorite was so big that it affected the atmosphere around it as it flew through the sky, because the meteorite was spiralling I thought that it would effect the clouds in the same manor. This is of course a theoretical assumption on my part, but hey I think it looks cool.

ROB

gabcatype,
Your painting reminds me of a big sunflower, I like it.
If you’re looking for techniques you should checkout the 3dtotal tutorials section.
One in particular would be good for the tail of your meteorite would be the clouds tutorial.
Clouds (http://67.15.36.49/team/tutorials/2dcloud/2dcloud.asp)
Another thing to think about is the impact and what would happen when it hits the city,
you will get lots of debris and parts of the meteorite will also break off and shoot up into the air
I attached some pictures for reference, Hope it helps.

mmmhh!...It does remind me something!....damn' Bob you got me!....Alright I'll try something else..Actually when I did it I didn't realized that unconsciously I was repeating my hidden inner thoughts...Ahaahahahaa!!!IoI

Well, I know this isn't 100% keeping with the description....although you could assume that this is a modern day cultist on a mountaintop. Hopefully acceptable? :)

A4, graphite, 40mins from conception to completion. Scanned &contrast adjusted slightly in photoshop.

http://img223.exs.cx/img223/6446/fireballwizard7py.jpg

I have another, A3, piece on the way....will take a bit more time. It's more of a modern setting. In fact, I may post the WIP, before someone posts a similar scene before me. :D

12 hours left, guys... any more works?

LittleFish
16-02-2005, 11:01 AM
Yep, I have one, should be done in a couple of hours.

It's kind of interesting though, that I actually had three good concepts come to mind (right before, right before, and right after), all with their own environments... but I wanted to paint skyscrapers more than water at the time I started, so it's in a city, looking up, just as it's coming down... it's a fun exercise in perspective; took a lot of sketches.

Lord Soc
16-02-2005, 01:49 PM
Michael-3DT: I have another one finished, but I've encountered hardware problems getting it scanned.....the only time I'll be able to get it digitised will be after 12GMT. :( Will that be a problem? (I know the rules say that's the deadline...)

Ibbo
16-02-2005, 04:07 PM
Owww dang, my PC died and i havent been able to get onto PS for 3 days now. I had a great idea too! Some cool stuff here guys!

Gerbilho
16-02-2005, 05:48 PM
Here it is a 10 minute drawing

LittleFish
16-02-2005, 09:29 PM
Aaahhhh!!! Oops, I forgot about it; remembered when I got up. All the cool stuff was done the last hour, along with painting over about half of the stuff I did in the first hour. (I hope to have this and the other two done in good fashion, maybe ten hours each, in the future. My biggest "complaint" on this is that there ended up being too much red, so you can't see all the contrast that there was half an hour ago.)

Total time: somewhere between 2-3 hrs (unofficial title: Where do I Run?)

This should be about a second or two before it hits (no, I don't know how the smaller chunks travel faster than the bigger chunk - I tried to avoid it, but the effect just begged me). Pretty much, the point is that it's hot.

I had some difficulty trying to figure out how to paint the meteor, but then I just decided to paint it as though it was solid fire, and that seemed to work. And the buildings are to look as though they are melting (like the burning, glowing edge of a piece of paper).

Michael
16-02-2005, 10:13 PM
The deadline is here.... and passed.... if you look hard enough, you'll see it vanishing over the horizon... :p

All the entries above this post - count. Lord Soc - I'm sorry, but now it's 6 hours past the deadline... can't wait any longer, sorry. Better luck next time. :)

Lord Soc
17-02-2005, 02:18 AM
Yeah, I know. :P Thanks Michael...at least I got 1 entry in :)

I actually came to say nevermind about my second entry...I couldn't get it on to a computer :dunno: Next time....

1. CHK - for the scene, lighting, and for the morbid sense of the crowd going "Oooh, look at that..."
2. David - for the lighting
3. Androgs - for the scene and the colors

Gerbilho -- that is really, really, really cool - how did you do that? (I would have voted you 3rd, but I got the feeling that it was a bit incomplete, i.e. it has water and an insanely cool meteorite, but no scene, and with it the sense of scale to demonstrate its size.)

Well, this seemed to be a great contest -- looking forward to the next one!

(edit: It's almost interesting, that I had originally intended for most of the sky to be filled with the meteor, and painted it as such, but it never occured to me until near completion that when the meteorite blocks out a similarly colored sky, that it would be so indistinguishable - I guess it looks like two small chunks as the only meteorites in mine... I just learned something.)
