View Full Version : speed modelling challenge week 34 - music on the move

The "rules" are simple,
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for.
2, spend no longer than the specified time on the modelling stages then render the image.
3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc. Please post only one image per entry with a maximum file size of 100k and with the maximum dimensions of 800x600. This image should include at least one wire frame view of your finished model. Posts with multiple renders of the same object will be deleted.
4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure"
5, if your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable
6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
7, No limit to the number of entries each person is allowed as long as each one is a completely new model and not one that utilises bits of previous entries
8, No external links to pictures, they must be attached using the browse button and be no larger than 800x600 pixels and 100k. Any pictures larger than this or links will be removed as soon as we see them and the poster will be disqualified immediately
prizes of a 3D Total texture CDs to the best entrants. We'll judge it to avoid the voting process getting too complicated and winners will be notified by an announcement in the thread once judging is complete.
so, here we go, with this week's challenge
deadline - 22.00 GMT Wednesday 16th February 2005
modelling time - 60 minutes
subject - music on the move
OK. time to get the thinking caps on :)
from an old radio to an iPod, if it's portable and plays music then it qualifies for this challenge
good luck and have fun
I've been a bit busy this evening so I'll be adding my model tomorrow. It's up to one of you lot to be the first this week :)

it's still wip and I haven't got a clue how long it's taken me, but I just wanna show it since it's pretty fun, that today of all days, this is the subject :E
I'll remove this one when told to, just submit it now to make you laugh at me for being stupid :P

I think that his timing is very tight :)
I must admit that's impressive texturing for less than 10 minutes

Thanks man.. i'm downloading an evaluation copy of rhino right now, but ..i dont know .... i like max a lot, and also a dont want to get confused with both softwares... but lets see what happen:D
vladoportos
10-02-2005, 04:37 AM
Rhino is different way of modeling than in max... it need time to get into it... but this technique is not suitable for everything for something is better to use poly
Edited: I love Max too althrough od discreet polici, not to listen what modeler wants they just listen to their saling department. Good example is max v.7 but their UI is just the best one.....

where did u get the idea that I´ve rendered and textured the player in less than 10mins?
Isnt the time limit only for the modeling part?
i´m confused now....?!?
it reads on my picture that the player is modeled in rhino in 55mins.
and AFTER that i textured and rendered it in 3dsMAX5.
am I not getting something here with the timelimits?

Yes Tojo the time is for the modellling part.
How we arrived at the 8 minutes for texturing and render was.....
You posted a model that took 55 minutes to make exactly 63 minutes after the challenge started.
Now, as the rules state all models have to be new it's reasonable to assume you did not start working on the model before the challenge began so unless you are now admitting to cheating you must have completed the textures, rendered, done the post process work and uploaded the image all within 8 minutes!!!!!!!!
Anything you feel we need to know before you are disqualified for attempting to bend the rules?

I think im gonna start modeling this idea seriously this week. Gonna make some nice sketches soon, and i hope i can model it the way i want it :) so be sure to check out the inorganic WIP forum this week ;) :p

Wow! you guys have the sharp eyes!!! I didnt even catch that. I thought we would have a tough one on our hands with Tojo's model....but since it looks like he cheated....
OK, i understand now...
Yes, my model in old, but it IS modeled in 55 mins.
How do I know?
-Because i timed it when i modeled it in Rhino.
I didnt in anyway try to cheat, and if u gyus get that impression, im very sorry.
And if my model doesnt qualify, thats then my fault...
I´m not trying to bend the rules here, just didnt know if u can post existing models...

Here is a repost of my initial entry, nothing changed model wise, just an updated texture...
6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
ok.

Render is almost finished now but its second time i rendering it because, I let it render during night at the same time windows automaticly download update and somewhere during night restarted pc without asking and with render in the midle..
I noticed that this morning when i came to pc and insted of my picture i see message saying that windows update is finished...   now the big render 800x600 is finished and another small one is in the middle so it will be here soon. Than i gona do ipod... :) its easy and quick...

ok, i´m very sorry for the misunderstanding.
BUT I´d like to question something about the rules;
IF i had waited, lets say for a day, to post my model, then nobody wouldnt know the difference...so theres a little hole in the rules.
now youre depending A LOT in the participants own morale. again, I wouldnt have posted my work if I knew that you couldnt use pre-existing models.
I really dont understand why u cannot post pre-existing work, if u know that it is modeled in less than 60mins?
really nice subject andy
here creativity wins it
!!!
ohhh and about that incident, that' s why you shouldnt
skip at math classes:D :D (great model anyway)

10-02-2005, 03:53 PM
these challenges rely on the honesty of those taking part and that is an integral part of the fun.
Of course it's easy to cheat or bend the rules, after all we kept them as simple and informal as possible to make the challenges fun and if anybody thinks it's worth cheating and running the risk of getting caught for the price of a texture CD then they are selling themselves way too cheap :)
Not everyone keeps track of their older projects so by asking for new models it means all the models are competing on a level playing field.
Andy
ok andy, txh for the explanation. I´m not trying to argue here, just asking questions...
from now on, only new models from me.

nah only the "easy" ones :)
seriously I try and get a recogniseable shape in the first couple of minutes then work on refining it for the rest of the time, starting at the most visible point and working away from the camera.
Every object has a "key detail" something that makes it instantly reconiseable. If you've got that right then pretty much everything else in the scene is secondary.
I've still not had chance to get my "entry" done this week - hopefully I get tomorrow afternoon free but then I may just head out for a beer or two :)

60 minutes in 3dsMax7, rendered with mental ray, quite a while lighting and "texturing". Max wont let me use pics as textures anymore.

This is my first post here and my first complete model other than the max tutorials - I took over 2 hours modelling it though, so it breaks the rules but I figured it looked kind of nice so I've posted it anyway (hope that's ok). @HooDLuM - Nice model i like that you put a visulization in there (is that R4 for winamp?). Practice makes perfect as they say, these speed challenges are a really good way to learn because they make you pay more attention to how you go about modelling an item. thats my 2cents anyways :D
Sathe
12-02-2005, 05:30 AM
FInally there is a speed modeling challenge i like, so i figured id make the most of it.
Its a model of the Creative Zen touch which my brother just bought and its true they are worse than ipods, but who likes IPods anymore???
Also, does anyone know how to make the screen glow, i spent about an hour after finishing looking on the web for tutorials but i couldn't find anything :(.
Well, i think it looks alright without the glow.
Also am i diswualified for using photoshop to blur the image? I havent posted in the speedmodeling so i dont know whats what. I have the crappy renders if they are whats needed.
vladoportos
12-02-2005, 05:36 AM
@ Sathe: thats nice looking model BUT wire and final picture have to be in one image wit max 800x600px and max 100kb (rules) and no you can use photoshop and postproduction on your picture doesnt count.. you have 60 min for modeling and on the rest you can spent much time as you want (not more than one week :) )

i always see really beautiful reflections for chrome stuff, which i assume is a relfect map, but what is it? can someone send me it? ir show me what they usually look like so i can make one?

in max with mental ray use raytrace in the reflection channel and that works pretty well
evil-98
12-02-2005, 10:31 AM
^^ chrome mats are 100% raytrace with a black diffuse color
black shows true colors of raytrance.
everything else that has reflections is probally fall out in reflection channel with HDRI or white box.
animesean
12-02-2005, 10:34 AM
yes and black as well, usually use black as the color in self illumination and black diffuse, chrome is a mirror, black is the absence of color so it reflects best.

If you are using max reverse engineer the martini glass and shaker sample file don’t remember the real name of the file but the shaker looks like nice chrome, not perfect but all the setting can be recreated, and by reverse engineering a file you see what changes effect what.

If you want great looking metal, go to my site...link is below...and download my hdri's, then use them in the enviornment slot with reflect up high... go to google type "hdri tutorial" with no quotes and the very first tut on the list is the best on the net to learn how to use them...

Thrillhouse (good name), if you want the standard chrome look it is simple. Firstly research hdri. www.splutterfish.com has some good tutorials. But if you want the preset 3ds max raytraced chrome texture go to the material library. Click the slot for a new material. once in there open a new material library and select raytraced 2. i think its in :3dsmax, matlibs, raytraced 2.
Hope this helps.

When I saw this subject, I thought, "Hooray, I can make my cool looking old Sony Discman!"
When I say all the iPods I thought, "Cool, my model will be totally different!!"
But alas, 1 hour was not enough time for me to finish it. I forced myself to stop. Oh well. Guess I was going a little overboard tweaking the shape. Maybe I'll do something simpler, or finish it just for the heck of it later but anyway... Here's how far I got :o

Hi.
New to 3d modeling, been doing it for about 3 1/2 weeks. Here is my first entry to any of these Speed Challenges.
Took me 40-45 minutes to model it, just made a sphere and started going with it. Hope you like it.
Sort of a portable mp3 player.
Ty Inspired, just did a whole new post. Wouldnt let me attach it on my original. Weird.

rendered in Mental Ray 3.3 using some of Lume's materials
Lume has may different materials that are really helpful
metal(lume) glass(lume) glow(lume) glare(lume) etc
with metal you can create brushed metal instantly just by checking blured reflection and same with glass you can easily create a bead blasted glass just by bluring the reflection. glow is another great mat which i used in the spheres.
its a Raytrace material with really basic stuff, fall out in reflect channel, and glow in Luminosity channel.
as i was testing the mat i couldnt get it to glow with a basic lighting setup. so i kept testing and tryed a more simple lighting set up which basicly isnt even lighing. the scene there was lite by a skylight, multipler set to 2 and a HDRI map
final gather on, max radius 100 min radius 1
sampling, max 16 min 1
and thats it. just play around with mental ray, its a really cool system once you get into it and understand how everything works.

Hi everyone, this is my first ever post on this forum, but I've been following everyones work for a while now. and I have to say, I'm very impressed with what 've seen and felt I had to join in!
So here goes...
This is my play on 'music on the move' - I figure that the record would be moving, and has the music on it - hence 'music on the move' - may be a bit off the mark, but seeing as I have built it, I'll submit, and see if I can get away with it!!
Software: Lightwave 7.0

Mousek, I can't help but notice, that my render time of 1.30 hrs is very high compared to everyone else's, do you know any one else here who uses Lightwave, that may be able to shed some light on that?
Thanks.
BTW. Your model looks great, I always struggle with that more organic modelling. And your render time's certainly quick.

So I think I could finish my Sony Discman in time if I started over. Is there any sort of rule about starting over on the same model? I think that I figured some stuff out while working on my first one that would let me do it faster. Is it cool if I try the same model again with my new knowledge?

13-02-2005, 02:37 AM
@sgibbons: to be honest i dont know anything about lightwave i saw once video tutorials from 3dbuzz just to check out worflow in it. But there must be plugin or something for lightwave to render toon things. My last model was rendered in in Penguin, special plugin for Rhino (non photorealistic render)
sgibbons
13-02-2005, 02:47 AM
I just took a quick look at the Pengiun 3d website, looks like there are some other cool render effect, with that as well as toon. Really need to look into some Renderers, trouble is I'm on a Apple Mac, and there doesn't seem to be as many options out there for Mac users!
Still, at least I can play modelling for now, just have to find something to do while they render!!

I'm not very good at modeling things, and usually when I do they end up being tons of polygons. But here it is.
I used 3Ds max 5.1 to model/texture/light and render it all. I used Photoshop put the wireframe together with the picture.

i thought mental ray doesn't support "volume light".but it's my mistake. i did try with Lens Fx (glow)effect(press 8, and in effect panel) with mental ray.it;s not working with mental ray.:(

thats normal because mental ray doesnt support glow and ring effect thats the why you get that message, but ray, autosecundary, manual secundary, star and streak are sopported by mental ray
