View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr.18!

So we're about to colour the lineart... but we have none in the moment, so... I think it'sa good idea to make two challenges connected - this weeks ( and a half ) we are to make a lineart. The winner's lineart will be coloured the next week and a half ) :).
The first thing that comes into my mind about colouring the lineart is comics. So this weeks challenge will be ...
.. to make a lineart of your favourite comics character. It may be Spiderman, it may be Batman... or it can be your character, that hasn't been portrayed yet.
Try to make the lineart as clean as it can be ( previous vector challenge could help a lot ;) ). You can also put in some of the environments for the character, or only the grass or a clouple of stones or whatever under his feet, to show that he's standing on something. Don't apply the shading with strokes now, just thicken the line wherever you feel that it needs shading.
A good reference for a lineart would be our own forum member - Eliseu Gouveia :) his posts can e found in 2d section, one of them... (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?threadid=28027)
Post WIPS for comments and constructive critique, but from now on - we watch timing and under every work posted the time that it took to make.
Have fun with it and...
PAINT!

I think i'm absolutely forced to take part for this one, as soon as there's a good time gap for me... :D Plus it's good kick for me to pick up my pencils again...and there will be only one way to go with this (or perhaps two).
Good luck to u all and have fun drawing... ;)
Great subject Michael. :)

I'll make your day then:
Good * subject, bobjackson
Michael, it's an interesting subject but many of the users have a pictural approach, so they might fail doing lineart

We'll see... those challenges are meant to practice, so I think many forum members will find them usefull :).
bobjackson
07-03-2005, 01:21 AM
ok I am serious now, I think the subject is very intersting but the comic book art is really difficult to realise when you don't practise it (the lineart, the proportion of the human body, the muscles, etc!)
This is a real challenge, but I would like to do it. If you want to access to this subject you must be well-informed!
Seek images, read some comics!
it is essential.
In a word a challenge! It's the good way to progress!
This is my opinion, and this is why i am ok to do the challenge!
Alcron
07-03-2005, 01:25 AM
Yeah.
Lineart isn't my strong suit.... people/characters are even less my thing. That is why we have the word challenge in there, though. Since I have Spring Break this week, I should be able to find the time. I'll just have to push myself to get down and enter.
It's a good subject. [just not so good for me :p ha ha]
I was also wondering... even though the older challenges are over, would it be acceptable to go back and choose a few to post to? If you want them to just fade away into the past, I'll honor your wishes but I was considering using the outlines to challenge myself and catch up to all the things you've each learned throughout the challenges. I liked the meteor impact challenge in particular and would rather post in there (once I do one) than on my own WIP, which would get hardly any views and have no outside works to compare to.

About the colouring - in this challenge we do the LINEART. Then after the challenge is complete - WE COLOUR THE LINEART OF THE WINNER.
Read the first post carefully. :P

hmmm... a stupid question. :o Is it ok to post img tags here now when attachments aren't working? I ask since it's a big no no in speedmodelling, but there's nothing about it in speedpainting rules... Let's see if i get slapped with a wet fish. :)

yeah....awsome subject michael.... friends lets make some awsome character... this week it's gonna be tight...i'm gonna try make it better...
michael so it's only make a lineart/outline + shade if need it ?, and what about the size? is it only black and white?
ok friends good luck :D... i've got a cold, need rest for while... really bad weather in my country...

For now let's not post tags, I have to discuss the situation with others.
As for the size - 100x800 could be good. 800X600 could be minimum. It needs to be big enough to alow nice and easy colouring. The lineart should be as clean as possible, even better if on the separate layer, cut out of the background. If not possible - it's still fine.
KEEP THE FINAL RESOLUTION ON YOUR COMPUTERS, BUT POST AT MOST 800X600, PLEASE. Let's make the threads 56k friendly ;)
I'll get to you ASAP with the img posting.

quote from entombeds song wolverine blues.
I just had to give it a shot...i haven't read too many comics in the past years but when i was younger and read more i always liked the characters with a little dark side to them...and wolverine was the coolest ;)
My first ever lineart i think, so be gentle, a bit over 3 h in total...all c&c welcome as always... :) It is a bit of at places, but hey...it's speedpainting. :D
I really have to get myself a wacom...mouse isn't the best of tools for this type of thing. Ppl who do or even try painting with a mouse have my highest respect, and there are ppl who do amazing stuff with it...beyond me. :)

ok first i would say sorry my bad english, but hey i want share my exprience with you friends hope this usefull....i agree with what you saying kenkuru,....
little bit off topic...
we should have a plan, a really plan for it... not just make it > and done with the whole things > and leave it... theres no sense of art what you make it.. *i've got these things on time over time in my study + entire life around with 3d's and 2d's. you have to feel it what are you want to make it *you are the creator, and you have to give what you create with a soul... sound crazy but that's the fact what i've got... example, " there's 2 person paintings ", 1. person sit on the chair with a furniture/item or object behind them (background). 2. a person walk around with a crowd people walking in the background... for me i choose no. 2, why? because there is activity in the background and a lot of story behind the primary object (a person walk in the crowd). but yes before these all, technique, how to good draw, imagination, all basic thingy must good...if not, those thing are nonsense in my opinion.... *for a normal people
i'm not saying i'm the best or perfect *far from best/perfect, but i'm trying hard to make what i make/create better than before...
yeaaaa....keep those character coming from your minds frienddsss...yihawww...

It seems that it is going to be very hard to decide on the winners!
Do keep in mind that this is suppose to be sort of a prep for colouring in.. so leave a bit of the details to be filled in with your crayons :)

Question byBobJackson
hi guys
a question
what do you mean by so leave a bit of the details to be filled in with your crayons ?
less or more details????
(coz of my poor english...)
thank you.Lol, It was more a sort of a joke actually. You know when you go and buy a colouring book for you child or younger brother/cousin.. you get this book with lines that they have to colour in with crayons and stuff.. :)
But seriously.. though most of you seem to be knowing what you are doing. It is a good idea to try and not forget that you should keep contours as contours.. and not as magor details. Xtreme™ has a nice work around for it for example.. by making the inner lines weaker. How you do what is always up to you.. it is all a matter of how you feel more comfortable when you work.
Just incase let me attach a simple sketch for it to be understood better.
(sorrrry my hand is not super steady when it comes to sketching with a mouse)
Sorry Black but couldn't really see your point? :( .
BTW here is another one from me if it isn't too late! But better late than never!IoI
Black
16-03-2005, 07:45 AM
Yes.... a situation that I should have just left by saying "the crayon bit was a joke"...
and saw this coming.
Well CHK try to remember the concept of the challenge for the week. You draw it now and you paint it in later.
It shouldn't matter as much, thus you can now digitally chang the hue and etc of a line that is in the midst of your image. Or you can even push/smudge/blur it right in.
And you guys ARE trying to make your stuff look as attractive and detailed as possible in order to get voted in this stage.
I have spent some serious time in inking and colouring comics, until I grew into only illustrating for the covers. And in the times when inking literally meant 'INKING' with a divit and a bottle of IndianInk, there would be a very thin line between what you should draw to illustrate, and what you should leave out for the colour artist to paint out to illustrate. Since some of the sketch lines are bound to get in the way. A good example would be a variaty of cartoons from the 60's that were prepared for newspapers.. but later coloured in as comic releases. Things can look seriously over crowded and messy.
A general practice would be for example for me to draw it all.. then for the colour and contour artists to talk it over on how they should fill things in. In my stage I would ofcourse draw as much of everything as I can in the given time limit. But you see drawing a scene is not exactly the same thing as what Line-art would stand for.
But since you all are working digitally and are not really going to paint in your line arts like you would pain a colouring book.. I guess there really is no point.
Shall you get into this for your proffessional projects later on. I would strongly adivse you to preplan what you want to draw out, and what you want to paint out as you work.
So just take this as an hands-on experience story and leave it at that.
THAT!!...was really usefull inputs Black! I see you point and will keep it in mind ;). I'm not really comic style but it's always good to know!

Congratulations to the administrators of the forums, it looks really great!!
This is my last minute post.
The drawing took me more or less 1 hour
The vectors I did in Corel, so any size will be available. This took me 1:30h.
Great entries, guys. Congrats!

Thanks for the entry summary, Xtreme™.
It's difficult to vote, as usual... but this time I also had to decide on what merits and criteria to vote. Should I award multiple places to pics by the same artist? Do I look at best quality/highest skill or do I vote for the one I'd most like to color next week? :haha: Personally, something I noticed this week is how only a few of the entries had a dynamic scene/context. The focus is on the character but background/scene and interaction are where they get their strength and interest.
If I wasn't so horrible at humanoids/life/character drawings it would have taken me less time to get it on paper and I could have gotten it in the computer and outlined a nice 22nd place entry for ya. Speaking of time, how long did these sketches take everyone? I know there's not as strict a time limit as 3D but it is part of the rules and might help [add more annoying choices for criterion] with the judging.
By the way:
1 - Xtreme™ - 3rd character (broken brick wall)
2 - chk - sunset (Sad hero or victorious after a long, epic battle? :lurve: )
3 - bobjackson - 2nd character (big, angry guy - ha ha - Hulk, or a similar but non-copyrighted character? ;) )

oh yeah alcron i know what you mean, this draw looks like hulk but it is a kind of superhero from marvel, not especially hulk. you saw it green, but he can have a snake skin, a rock skin, no skin (only aparent muscles) , whatever you want (the purpose of my draw)!
I like bad and powerfull hero like him...

1. elvenartist :P
2. serialinferno, batman
3. kenkuru, wolverine
I know I voted for myself, but someone has to right. And the others are the only ones that seem to be comicbook characters, being that is the subject of this challenge.

Ofcourse ElvenArtist;
This is a free opinioon forum.. you can vote for anyone you would want to. Including yourself.
But unfortunately by doing so you managed to have your votes as valid as CHK's latest votes.. they can stay here and manage to express your opinions.. but they won't be of much use in the total when they start to get counted.
And none the less it sort of gives you a bad popularity rating (An even worse one to CHK btw) for the futur votes to come.
I would advise you to play along and try to choose from other entries than yourselves, before Sunday.
If for ANY reason... it being the better thing to do.

It is totally your choice... Not going to worry too much about changing your opinion.
Now shall you have the time: can you please run by me once again.. WHAT makes the others not fitting the description, but makes yours very suitable?
One of us seems to be clearly missing the point.

What would this challenge look like, if everyone voted for themselves???
I mean, its obvious that we all would like to win sometime, but on first place, is the fun of joinig these challenges, next is learning with it, and last is beeing proud of winning.
Would you be proud if you won only because you gave a vote to your own picture?
I think if you don't get many (or any) votes, it only makes you want to get better, or try harder. And this is what the challenges are here to.

ElvenArtist had actually posted another message that he has aparently removed now.
His reasoning was that none of the works fullfillled the criteria for the competition. And that was why he shouldn't play along by voting such.
Logiclysince you guys didn't deserve to be voted.
The competitions here have once again become fun and chalenging. I would like to personally ask for you to not take this as a reason for things to go sour. You all are getting better and better. Lets just try and make the 'filling in' bit ever better! :)
Oh and BTW; CHK; I know you had your last post for diffrent reasons. And I believe you have made your point well. Can I please ask you to fix it all up now? It would be a tisk for your votes not to count.
Edit; A small note... I hope you have had figured that my refferal to you earlier was humour intended. And I hope I have not offended you in the meanwhile

Oh! I thought you really meant it...just kidding;), I wasn't offended at all! Btw I wonder how you moderators can be in all threads and reply to everybody at the same time. Aren't you sleeping? You all sure do a fantastic work here! lOl
