I made skeleton for my model usin bones in 3dsmax, linked them, assigned Ik spinners, then i applyed skin modifier to my model, edit envelopes and limit rotation of the bones. When I strted to move arm it`s elbow deformed very ugly (the same thing happens also with the knees) - the question is: what shoud I do to fix this problem?

I think physique has a lot more control than the skin modifier, and it lets you shape your envelopes in more ways than you can shape a skin envelope (as well as being able to add verts to the envelope). It also lets you create custom muscle bulges and tendons. I think it is more complicated but it does give you more control.
If you want to use that instead of skin, go check the tutorials under the help menu that come with max (in the tutorials go to character animation--->character animation using biped---->getting started with physique). The tutorials there use a character studio biped, but you should be able to use physique with max bones as well. Also check the "user reference" under the help menu for an explaination of all the features of physique.

Now if you're getting ugly deformation around the elbows and knees on your character, and you want to stick with the skin modifier instead of using physique, then you probably want to add some angle deformers that are available in the skin modifier. This way you can control the shape of the mesh around the elbow and knee, and customise it so that you don't have any nasty folding and deformation....and you can make the muscles of the arm bulge a bit as well. Again, you'd be best to check out the tutorials that come with max (character animation---->character animation without biped---->using the skin and flex modifiers---->working with angle deformers)

I hope this helps a bit. You should find most of the best tutorials for stuff like that are actually ones that come with max :) Good luck

good advice, and make sure you got enough details at the elbow and knee area - otherwise it will look weired even with the angle deformers.
