does anyone know a good tutorial for or a way to make realistic looking clouds in 3ds max without any costly plugins? thanks in advance

man, i was gonna post, but then i was like, you better search first so you don't look like an idiot. thats what i get for searching for clouds and not cloud. anyway, thanks ross. but unlike the other guy i was looking for ones you look at rather than flying through, some nice thick cumulus clouds that react well to light. i could even use a good 2d tutorial for clouds if anyone knows one.

You can also actually model the cloud by using box modelling and smoothing. Then you can add other modifiers like push or relax to tweak the look, it can work for a more cartoony or for large distant thunderclouds.
