View Full Version : speed modelling challenge week 38 - triped
Andy_k-3DT
17-03-2005, 03:10 AM
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries.Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified
6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
this weeks challenge
time limit - 60 minutes
deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 23rd March 2005
subject - Triped
We thought it was about time you took on another character and to make it different we want him/her/it to have three legs or three points of contact with the ground
have fun with this subject. The forums are back to normal - let's see a big one this week

Yeah, I don't think triped is a word, but this looks like a good subject. Can make the models a little more complex than a nut crackers I think. Now where to go with this subject.... need ideas.. googles.....
(Maybe triped is one of those secret words that all geeks know, but that can't be found in the dictionary...)

17-03-2005, 03:55 AM
yeah it's a sort of made up word - we are looking for a three legged character not object.

allright, at first, i didnt want to ask this but...
when you say a character, and NOT an object... does a robotic thingy with three legs count as a character? or does it/he/she have to have a mind of its own..
anyway, good luck with the maroccan lantarns :p
oh and black, im still waiting for your post man ;) i really want to go to sleep, but i cant untill ive seen your post :D

Dang ... it seems I forgot to texture the guys eye balls! :(
Well it was a bit hectic in the back stage this evening. Sorry for the delay folks.
Well as for your questions... the whole thing is based on the same grounds as the competition for a biped character. But the diffrence here is that you have THREE contact points to the ground.
I think that should give you a hint on what to be able to go for.
Good luck all. I am SURE you will impress everybody yet once again!

Can we model a three legged robot? If not i will try to do something else.... :hmm:
Andy_k-3DT
17-03-2005, 04:32 AM
yes - robots are classed as characters for the challenges.
But bear in mind, you may not get on with organics but these challenges are here to help you develop your skill levels - everyone will join in to help - have a go and if you get stuck, then ask :)
Don't just model what you know - try branching out

Agamemnwn shall you apreciate.. there is a VERY thin line in were a robot would really fit into the rest.
It is hard to point out the slight diffrences but I am sure you can grasp the bit about it having to be a CHARACTER.. Do you get my point?
So when you think of it this way there are a variaty of robotic.. even toy characters.
Please care to have that feel squeeze in.
As for Organic modeling.. I would say give it a go anyway.. do your stuff.. and do that too. This is a strong platform to learn alot.
Look at me... I can model now!! :D

ok i dont know what i was thinking when i modeled this, thats why it looks so strange, anyway, modeled in 55 minutes using 3d studio max, i tried heaps of different textures, but because i suck, i gave up and used simple colours.
i think his long arm is ment to be able to swivel arround him, a strange product of evolution....

ok my first organic. :shy: :dunno:. I planned it well ( thank god) after i got inspired by Zeyix's submission. i looked on google to find some reference about the model i wanted to make. Had some ideas on my head and i wanted to see in close view different parts like legs and head how they look like in different views etc. then i made a little scetch before i started modelling it in Maya. Modelled with NURBS mostly, only the last parts on the leg and the teeth were subds. Dont know how it would be with a 3 legged spider anatomically i mean and stability wise :p C&C always welcome.

Hey Diobolos,
Thanks and no I didn't use a displacement map but yes that is ok.
I made a simple track shape in polygonss, I then used the Array tool to copy that object 34 times. I then chose PathDeform form the Modify panel and chose the spline that I created and shaped previously as the deform path...then I just lined it up and viola!
Hope that helps, but here's a very simple tutorial you can try:

Great topic Andy.
I just have one question. Is functionality going to be a part of the judging on this one??? Cause I have a realy good idea for a mech triped that would look cool but when you think of a mech triped trying to walk it doesnt really work very well due to the ballance point if you know what I mean???
Just to explain what I mean a bit. Say you want to lift one leg and move it, The ballance point has to be moved between the 2 legs that remain on the ground witch is all well and good. But then when you want to move one of the other legs the ballance point has to be moved between 2 different legs. So what turns out as a really nice looking triped. Might actually have a very limited functionality in moving due to gravity and falling over and all that sort of stuff.
Hope this makes sense and I will have an entry soon. Just its St patricks day and keeping up with the spirit of things Ive had a few drinks and am now all philisophical.

I know what you mean Sniper but you could easily make a triped mech that works without falling over - would make for an interesting walk cycle - I gave it some thought and three legs in a row would work quite well, the centre one working almost as a pendulum/balance point with the outside legs working together - it will make sense if you've ever had to use crutches to walk after breaking a leg :)
Functionality? Nah, not really, lets just see some very cool models this week and make up for all the chaos of the last couple of challenges

so to all you fellow newbies out there go out and break your leg, it helped me ;P

Lol. yea I kinda agree with this but from my experience this is a much too painfull way to go about it after spending almost 2 months where I couldnt even really get out of bed (I broke both the bones in my left leg and had to have a steel rod put in there :( ). The much better thing is to just quit or be fired from your job. Unless your job is working in the 3D industry.

I didn't think i would get chance to enter this week but i managed to find a few spare hours and started doodling. So here's my entry for this week.
Not sure how functional it is really, but i guess that two legs would work forwards, whilst the third one would be working backwards.. if that makes any sense at all..

Well, I had an unusual inspiration for this one. I happen to be in one of the smaller rooms of the house and something caught my eye.....can you guess what is was?? (LOL)
Not much too this....bevel profile for the plunger thingy and a capsule for the handle. The tenticals are loft objects. The box is, well a box....inset, extruded and shape merge. The eyeball is a sphere with hemispheres for the lids. I think that's about it.
Kinda silly really. :o Had fun though.

It probably show and it might not have been a smart idea but this is my first organic model ever.
Although is doesn't look entirely how I wanted it to look but I'm still pleased with the result.
But I'm probably going to model inorganic triped just to have something that is almost, but not quite, enterily unlike a fighting chance.

Sorry guys..
I was OVER occupied the whole day.. and could't follow up.
Just to reply some of the private contactings;
Please try to concider the third leg as a contacting point.. but in such a manner that the character has to depend on the third one in some way or the other. If nothing to keep in balance (NOT like the T-Rex.. the three points have to be TOUCHING the ground) So when your trench coat is too long and it touches the floor, it wouldn't manage to make you a triped.
Anatomical perfectness is not really the issue. But sort of create with supporting facts in the model itself (If that makes any sence).

I shall react VERY harshly if you are preparing to call the contestants liars without coming to me with proof. PLEASE care to choose your words carefully and wisely.

I have to say that yes sometimes I look at certain models and think there's no way that was done in one hour :) BUT I keep it to myself...after all I can do in one hour more than some contestants in 4 hrs...and it works both ways....for instance, Andy can model something in one hour that would take me several hrs at least...so let's remember that everybody has different skill levels.
On a different (much happier) note, I just bough 3dworld mag (the one with Truespace) and I'm hoping that a couple tuts in here are made by Andy (or article or whatever) and I may even set max aside for a couple months and try my hand at this new program...
Wish me luck :)
Orkron.
p.s. that means that some submissions in the near future will sayd "modelled in TS [truespace]" not modelled in max :D

Haha DeadPlant You do NOT know what you are getting yourself into! :)
It was my First Model (http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=53075&stc=1) I had tried to do when entering these contests.
And to my suprise: 3 attempts (Or was it four) And I STILL couldn't finish the little bag of bolts and oil! I can not start to count the amount of preperation I went through to have him done with.
Since then I have been trying to erase R2-D2 out of my memory.
I would LOVE to see one of you manage to model him.
(Please note the very important diffrence of modeling out of an existing object and one you have created yourself. With creating you can really go nuts and/randome. But when creating an existing object.. loyalty to the original is very important in defining it's quality. And it's THAT bit of it that really takes alot from your time.)
The entries are getting... Intresting :)
I hope this keeps up!

And another nice one from Rooky. You've got quite the cast of characters going on.
So what's next? The "villian" perhaps? (hint hint) LOL
Anyhow, I like the "simple" design of it, and you kept the textures down to a bare minimum, which adds to the character feel.

Second. I have one model 85% done... only 15 mins left to go then maybe I can try texturing him properly. Then... I still have a few more ideas... so unless you want the rath of Titan to be unleased upon you... I'd try to stay on my good side. So shaddap and start pushin those :*poly:'s!!!

scatter is the only real way to do it in max without an external plugin like HairFX (formerly Shaghair)
HaidFX is like %500...but you can get good results with the scatter method, you just have to learn how to use it first...I don't know personally.

Marty locked my IP out of your sites access.
NeonLeopard I'll double you on that! I had access to all the official R2 blueprints through the R2 builders club.. hah! :)
Maybe you noticed the R2 in the refference cube tut (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=28305) you saw in the help forums. I had actually modified them dearly to have as efficient a result as I can. But again none the less. I couldn't model the little twerp (I really hated the frustration it gave me)
I won't be allowed to share the official blueprints. But I could share the ref images that I had personally created with you two. Though I presume you guys already have TOO much information from what is out there on the net.
(ONE advice though.. Reffer to not use the free R2 models out there as reference if you want to do a portfolio job rather than a speedy model. The BEST I came across was from The Force (http://scifi3d.theforce.net/) And even that was not really on the head)

As for 'Then Get them':
Thank you,
but I tend to need HDRI's of the specific env's that the characters are going to be placed in. So I usually have to make my own. And for those I do for fun or here; the Debevec or Dosch HDRI's have proven useful enough.
None the less,

Orkron: good to see you are trying out other software, the motorbike tut in 3d world is a good one, and even my wife managed to get through it and she has no 3d experience. ( i guess that says a lot for the way Andy laid it out )
TS is a decent package and i was gonna start using it as my main software, but decided that C4D is better suited to my needs.
If you are considering changing then try the demo of C4D ( it comes with issue 62 of the magazine or you can download it from maxon web site) and check out www.c4dcafe.com for their tutorials and forums.
In Andy's words " it simply blows max out of the water"
Orkron
18-03-2005, 02:23 PM
Hey thanks Andoy,
Actually I have C4D, but despite it's simplicity I can't wrap my head around it lol (Andy even wrote a mouse tut for C4D that he gave me and it was way too much for me at the time), I mean everybody says Max is too complicated but I feel lost in other UI's ...
If your wife (with no experience) got through it then dammit I'm gonna try hard - I actually had changed my mind (I hate tutorials that say sfter your halfway through "now do this with the skills you've just learned" [no offense Andy, it's a really good tut]) but I will give it a shot!
I actually just got my hands on a video tutorial for Vray and finally fell in love with the renderer...I wasn't getting even partly good results prior to this tut (even though I had tried 10 or more text tuts online) then the sun came from behind the clouds and made me VERY happy :) anyways now that I can use a decent renderer I'm staying with Max...More I had the idea to do models in both Max and TS...
I'm jealous you already have issue 62 as I have to wait more than a month after each issue is released hehe is that an excuse enough to move to the UK? I doubt my daughter would be as happy as me lol.
TS seems rediculasly simple in it's UI but since I know zero of the shortcut keys, I feel lost anyways lol, no worries I'm all over it!!!!! :D

Hey Andy, I'm gonna try your motorcycle tutorial tonight...I thought I recognized that bike on the cover of the cd ;) Wasn't 100% sure till I started reading the mag.
sorry, I missed this one first time around - I've been so busy with client stuff over the last couple of days.
Enjoy trueSpace - as I've said before 4 is starting to show it's age now but it can turn out some nice stuff. Once you get a handle on the unusual interface it's all kind of logical (and then you upgrade to trueSpace 5 and wonder why you did it :)) If Caligari offer you a silly price upgrade deal from 4 to 6 that you can afford it's worth taking - 6 has an awful lot of highend features for not much money and any version sold now will have a V7 upgrade included in the price. tS7 looks as though it will be a groundbreaking piece of software and when you consider just how much of the 3D software we use now was influenced by earlier versions of trueSpace then it should be good.
Let me know how you get on with the bike tut
Andy

Hehe you are jealous that i have issue 62... well i just got issue 63 in the post last week!!
seriously though TS is a good UI, my wife is from Thailand and her ability to read english is not great, so an icon driven UI is ideal for her. I think thats why she gets no where in max and seems to love TS and C4D.
I needed to get her involved so she doesn't nag at me always for hogging the pc.. Now it's me thats nagging her to finish so i can play!!

Will do Andy,
This tut looks DETAILED lol but lucky me I'm unemployed and I'm on spring break so no school.
I'm suprised they will sell 5 or 6 since they released 7...I guess I'll have to see if I like the software before I spent serious money on it (serious to a fulltime single parent, fulltime student who parttime works :) )
But if you made that motorbike in it then it can obviously do some serious modelling.

Okay, bed time now...See you guys at your bedtime lol....

18-03-2005, 02:38 PM
they haven't released 7 yet but they have started marketing it and I think the upgrade from 4.3 on the CD is currently the one they are offering to registered users of trueSpace 6 - so that is a helluva a good deal :)
Caligari's marketing strategy has always been weird and it's best to keep an eye on it when you are thinking of buying - with their special offers I've seen V5 being sold for $129. I think that's why they keep older versions up for sale.
As you know I've used trueSpace virtually since it was released and it's an often overlooked but very powerful piece of software.
If you get stuck with the tut - let me know I'll try and help out

It was a sunny friday in the netherlands. Inspired sat all alone in his room, thinking on what to model. Triped, triped, triped, he constantly repeated. His mother had looked several times around the corner, just to find her son sitting on his bed, with his eyes closed, repeating the same words. Suddenly, Inspired jumped up, bumped his head against the lamp, and shouted: EUREKA! While his mom, brought the poor boy some lemonade and a cookie, inspired took his phone and called his old friend, SQRTSCH.
'SQRTSCH knows what to do, he always got the greatest ideas...' is what inspired thought, when he phoned his friend. and SQRTSCH sure did what to do! 'Let me come over, and let me help you this week finding ideas, since im a triped myself' he said.(Its more SQRTSCH Telepated towards inspired, because he has no mouth...) Inspired almost smashed his head to the wall, when he thought on how stupid he has been. One of his best friends, was a Triped himself... So thats why inspired modeled SQRTSCH first. At the time this written, Inspired and SQRTSCH are sitting both down on inspireds bed, with their eyes closed, repeating the magic words. 'triped, triped, triped...' Inspireds mom peeks around the corner of the door, and shakes her head softly.. then she slides a plate with 2 glasses of milk and 2 cookies into his room, and leaves silently... 'COOKIES!!!' is what both friends shout at the same time. Thery both jump up, and bump their heads against the same lamp.
modeling time - 60 minutes ( i wanted to add more detail... no time :( )
mats & lights - almost a minute...
render time - 1 min 50 secs

Ext: Wide shot of Planet Earth...
Ext: Camera begins zooming in on Eastern Hemisphere...
Ext: Zoom get's tighter on on an island off the caost of Florida.
Ext: Zoom stops and rotates over a geosphere in the middle of the island.
Int: Camera zooms through the dome to reveal a giant factory...
Int: Panning through many rooms and corridoors it finally stops on a close up of the lead character.
Marty: SQRTSCH?!? SQRTSCH?!? That was my idea! I can't believe he stole my idea.... I've known SQRTSCH for 3 minutes longer than he did. As a matter of fact... I introduced them! Ok... if that's the way it's going to be... then that's the way it's going to be. Now it's time to fight dirty.
Pacing back and forth he starts thinking frantically of how he's going to deal with this treachery. And then an idea hits him like a lamp to the head... Syndrome! His old scientist buddy Syndome... he always has good revenge ideas. After a few missed phone calls... he finally gets through and the brainstroming begins. 3 minutes later they've got it! The Omnidroid v .025a!!! It only has 3 legs... err arms... err tenticles... uhh... it only has 3 points of contact with the ground. (And it really has great potential to be a very destructive force in an animated motion picture too!)
This will teach Inspired to steal my ideas... Muahahahaha! Using 3D Studio Max 6 and 55 minutes of his time... he cleverly finds a way to include his build time and software used into his story. Unfortunately... he fell asleep before he got to post anything and when he woke up... he noticed that Syndrome took the plans and began working on his own version of the Omnidroid. (I guess we may be seeing the Omnidroid in a movie after all since Syndrome is a part time actor...)
Anyway... to make a long story short... (trust me... you don't want to hear about the marshmellow incident... or what really made the pizza guy's hair turn white!) I present to you.... The Omnidroid v .025a!!!

Lol! I remember that help thread, yes. I live by it's laws :D. Those ref images are PERFECT. If you suppled them too me then i'd just HAVE to do a protfolio worthy R2, or i'd just be being rude! :D
I've got lots of ref material already though, but it's acuracy is questionalbe :grr:

And its a big lie that you know SQRTSCH longer then me, when i asked him, he 'said'. Inspired, I LOVE inspired...(actually he said, i love cookies, but cookies sounds like inspired... )So he is MY friend... And him and me have already plans to take over this weeks challenge, and make even more powerfull creations then snipers spikerator! oh, and sniper... better watch your words :p We are not crazy, Marty is just a mad scientist... and im just crazy.. wait a minute...

now lets go! bring the 3DMadness!!! on!
oh, and was it you who made the hair of the pizzaboy white!? i found him lying in front of my door, crying because his hair had become white... And just to let you know, he now is on my design team aswell...(only for this week, he doesnt know yet im gonna fire him wednesday cause he smells like cheese... :dunno: )
ps. SQRTSCH asks if he could get the email adress of titan, and maybe a picture... he seems very interested in him  he havent had a girlfri.. err boyfriend since childhood... :lame:

Found a bit of spare time today to make another entry, I tried to keep this one organic rather than a mech type.
Started off with just an 8 sided cylinder for the body then extruded polys.
Modelled in Max in 60 minutes.
Rendered with scanline and one skylight in 8 mins 23 secs.

Actually I am in doubts now to redo that and make it a tut for the forum. It is a question that has started to come up very often. (Or maybe I should post something on it to bring it back to the top :p. Cause there are SO many tutorials that people (mostly from the Threedy forums); are expecting still.
A little note: SOORRY guys.. I haven't forgotten ANY of yours! Just had TOO much to do for some while
I would love to see what you could do with them. I'll check if I still have the cube scene WITH the images still intact, to send to you (if you still would like them). If I don't.. I could always send you the files only.
You saw the link of my halve-arse R2 right? Well that was made with those refferences.
In the cube for that set; I had also made the colour be it's trans value, so when I had rendered the image. I had a series of blueprints on the background. And a wire display of plans in the foreground.
You might like an effect such in some of your renders aswel.

You guys are unrivalled! I just can't understand where you get the ideas to make such interesting models! :dunno:
But I won't give up, and here I have my third this week!
This one is called The Red One. :D I started the model from the head to legs, so you can see that when I got to the legs - there wasn't much time anymore and I had just to make something that looks like legs. Thats why he looks so strange! But I thought out a reason why he has to have the third leg - how you see he has a very big stomach, and it's good to have three legs to hold it above earth. :D :D Hope you understood something of this stupid story! :D
I made the model just out of 2 spheres (of course not including the eyes and teeth). :)
Modelling: 60 min
Texturing: 1 min
Rendering: 2 min
Software: 3ds Max 7

I'm stuck in a rut. I'm really not much of an organic modeler so this has been frustrating. Some of these models here great, it's depressing. :wall:
Marty...inspired...excellant stuff once again.
and Sniper...OMG!
I used poly editing on the legs and a bevel profile with FFD for the head. The little splingly things are simple lofts. The barrel is another bevel profile with some noise and vert pulling and pushing. Nothing to get excited about.
The info is on the pic......(sigh) :ugh:

Hey Rooky, nice once again....went with the villian...cool.
A couple of observations...don't want to offend....the two front feet should point a little more towards the front, to help balance the mass..looks like he could fall over if he ate anymore..lol. Also the anntena things...give a little more curve...too stiff looking compared to your others in this series.
Again...I'm no expert...just trying to help. :)

fastrak , you're right in both things you said about my model, that the feet should be more pointed to front and the anntenas are too straught, but I spend all 60 min modelling this triped. Of course it would need only 1 to 2 min to fix those things, but then I would be cheating overruning the allowed time. Sorry guys..
I was OVER occupied the whole day.. and could't follow up.
Just to reply some of the private contactings;
[/I] [/SIZE]
Villane,
I shall react VERY harshly if you are preparing to call the contestants liars without coming to me with proof. PLEASE care to choose your words carefully and wisely.
Abit touchy aren't we?
Just calling it as i see it, i have been working in the industry long enough to know how long something takes to model, and please i'm abit old to be told off like a school child so can you not be so aggressive in your tone black?!
Not trying to ruffle any feathers just stating it as i see it and i'm probably stating something that alot of others competitors have been thinking for a while but have declined to comment on for their own personal reasons, either it's a 60 minute modelling competition or it isn't, that's the point i was trying to make.
If you deem these words not to be carefully considered or wise then there's nothing i can do about it.

Villiane,
Be you a modeler as good as Stählberg, or be you as old as my grandfather..
It makes NO diffrence. Evidently I don't care WHO you are! This is not the first time you have stuck to stick in posts such.
If you have doubts on individual posters.. state them.. or contact the mods about it.. and if you would preffer, put me aside and contact Andy.
But by talking to the general public like this, is literally nothing less than acusing literally everyone!
Unless some things are too evident to us, trusting the competitors honesty is the basic prefference.
Instead of getting so offended, and answering such, I would reconcider what you wrote, and what was said to you.
Since you are still insisting on the same concept, I am asking you once more: Are you calling the contestants Liars here?
You don't HAVE to accept and understand the conditions of being a part of these challenges. It is very normal. You are free to not take part in it all.
Some are better at modeling some concpets than others. And admitedly most of the contestants state that organics wre their weaker sides for modeling. So their doing poor'er models is what it takes to convince you that the models were done in an hour?
Personally I can't state that I find the models of this week poor... I am directly reffering to your own comment.
So I state it once more; inspite your age, inspite your experience and inspite your disagreement to my 'tone'; Choose your words wisely.
As good as your intentions may actually be. They are NOT coming out like that. And insult or an accusation stated politely is still an insult or an accusation.
For the part of 'stating the rules of it being a 60 minute competition' is being handled by Andy in the rules page of every week.
There is no need left for you to use it as an 'excuse' to spill out your personal doubts.
I will not say that everybody here is 100 percent honest. Cause I can not say.. since I can not know!
And you shall also never witness me stating that they are not. The best you shall ever witness me do is to ask an individual.

VILLANE here, and no i am no Stählberg :blah: .
You seem to have me down as some kind of forum antagonist here from what you have been typing, but in truth i participate in these forums because i enjoy it and like to see some of the work produced by the artist's within. You seem to be blowing this out of proportion here especially by asking me to accuse individuals of being liars, which of course i would never dream of doing.
As for wether i have i am accussing everyone of cheating well that is plain ridiculous, of course i am not and thank for the suggestion of going to Andy with any matters relating to these forums, something which i may take you up on in future.
You're obviously trying to paint me as the bad guy here and for all to see and for that i am not particularily appreciative.
Having said that i respect you as a 3d artist and like the work you have produced thus far.
I guess i'll have to keep my opinions to myself from now on, and here's me thinking it was a forum for free speech...guess not :hmm:

I agree that some models in previous weeks seemed incredible considering the amount of time. For instance I remember looking at the film projector thread and being pretty impressed. Weather or not anyone was cheating is not really possible to determine :hmm:, but I think most people here are pretty honest afaik.

It is free for speech...
limited by the respect that should be granted to the other members.
I shall be against anyone who shall reasonlessly be disrespecting yourself aswel.
You have made a statement.. and I asked you to live up to it and clarify it all, or watch what you say. Don't hide behind the 'speech' cliché, when you don't want the same ability to be given to any oppositions.
I shall too be using the same freedome; to speek against you, shall you decide to again comment on anyones honesty without base. Which again I add.. IF you have base TELL me. OR message me.
Otherwise you are simply accusing. And you are even convinced that you know that everybody else is thinking the same; so you are actually saying it for them. I am sorry but I can't find a way to sugar coat it to make it sound better.
Now...
If any of you are thinking the same please do report it...
There is no way that we are going to plant spies into everybodies computer. And this subject is going to be closed for this week, as it is not motivating anyone.
So Villane; you said what you said, and it was wrong.. taking it to personal grounds, slapping back a moderators warning as a schoolchilds scolding won't justify it. Take the warning as it was said and what it meant. If you are going to keep it as personal. I am going to have to insist you take it to private messaging.
Alot of work was spent, and alot of people were kept waiting for this forum to get back and running. So without sticking in any more sarcasms, leave it.
Phynius Gauge,
I'm sorry. That totally depends on what you intend by reposting. Could you be more specific on what went wrong, and what is to change?

@ Black: Nothing really went wrong, I just wanted to give my creature a bigger beer belly, 'cause I thought he could use a bit more character from the front side . Maybe I'll spend a bit more time on materials as well (if I'm allowed to replace the old version).

Well yes you can.. and you can rerender.. but do show care to have the limit calculated accordingly. Please understand that I am going to have to insist that you don't make a habbit of this.
I can't tell this enough, guys.. there is NO reward given out to those that manage to model a model less than the proposed time limit. So make complete use of it the best you can.
On the contrary, IF the model has a few things gone bad about it and you still had 15 or so minutes. Then it really pulls your entry down. Since it shows a dear lack of commitment to the entry.
Even if you have to sit infront of the computer and think for the rest of the time just stairing at the screen... do that! :)
good luck

i would like to say that the models here are truly inspiring, joining this forum has probably been the best thing for my modelling, as i've seen somethings that make you go... "oh, so it can be done THAT way?" some that make you go... "where the hell did he come up with that? (ahem..diabolos..cough...) and to no offense, some that make me go "heh, im not so bad after all..."
i would just like to say that everyone here is helping me become better at this.
now for some moo points (a cows opinion)
phynius... go home. you are no longer allowed to post your models here, as so long as you do, there will be no way i can win ;P
inspired, your quirky little inventiveness with your models, as well as the intuition you employ in making the object feasable... it just astounds me.
daphone, i love the crutch character... hes got good personality in him.
sniper, as to that pointy thing... i must say... ouch.
any sort of criticism that i may have over any others is worthless, as my only experience in modelling s from bryce 3d (eeeew...^washes hands^) and 3d studio max.
btw, in case noone noticed, i just got a wallet trimming and upgraded to max 6.0...
woot. oh, and can anyone help me out with the unwrap uvw modifier? whenever i use it, it looks like a giant pile of overlapping polys...

funny thing, that signature came from a conversation me and a friend were having while watching the movie "a christmas story" where the kid wants the bb gun. dunno if he made it up or not, but my friend said that and got the whole room laughing.
another one i like goes like this.
"some people are like a slinky...
not really good for anything, but you cant help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs."
that i got on a sticker from hot topic, alongside "i poke badgers with spoons"
at any rate, i just modelled a really crappy teddy bear on a tricycle, and decided that there was no way i would post it. i did it without any reference images, and i gues it goes to show ya, reference helps a ton.

Marty_McFly-3DT
19-03-2005, 06:53 AM
Rashika: You have to add an UnwrapUVW modifier to your object. Then under parameters hit "Edit". This will open up a new window with your UVs all on top of each other. In that window select Mapping from the menu... and then "Flatten Mapping." You'll get a dialog window where you can pretty much leave everything at it's default settings. Hit "OK" and bingo... instant flattened UV maps! Enjoy! :)

If your teddy was meant to be ridding a bike, then that would not really count. That would make us all quadropods shall we drive a car. If I misunderstood the concept.. correct me.

Danabso, look to shareware sites from some free type programs, like downloads.com. I found this one there, free, and development was assisted by Microsoft to use as a replacement for paint. Even has layers. Might be worth a try. Here is the link directly to it. Link (http://www.download.com/Paint-NET/3000-2192_4-10338147.html?tag=lst-0-5)

Nice one Segreto. Very clean. BTW, you guys that do mech type stuff, do you have like engineering backgrounds or something. Many of the entries have very plausible setups, like Segreto's here. So what's the secret?
Segreto, how did you do your clay render....that is with the wireframe. This may have bee asked before, sorry. That really helps to define the image better. I use max also.

thanks for the nice comments fastrak! No engineering degree here, i just really like mechanical stuff and have made it kind of a hobby of mine to self study. I do the claywire by choosing flat by right=clicking on the viewport name -> and by choosing flat as my view setting. And enable wireframe as well. I use max7 but i believe its available in max6...not sure though. The i just take a screen shot of the model. If you cant change to flat mode, you can achieve the same effect by making a new material, apply it to the object and then add a sold color to its self-illumination. That will block out the shading in the view port and create the clayrender look. If that doesnt make sense to anybody, i'll make a video tut to show how i do it, just let me know.

Just a little comment on the setup of mechs in general. Most of the mechs i've seen on this forum are nicely modeled but when you look at it from a technical/engineering viewpoint there are often flaws in the design. For example Segreto's latest work (nothing but good comments on your modeling skills, and not the best example since the one hour limit ect.) , but when you look at the design the legs lack the ability to rotate around the vertical axis. So the design would only be able to move when one of the legs gets a good grip and pulls the whole mech forward, making it kind of scrape the ground. In general lots of mechs have essential parts missing, such as balljoints, cilinderjoints and cilinders to give the mech the muscle and flexibilty to walk.
Just my 2 cents..
Segreto
19-03-2005, 05:55 PM
nice comments there formaX, Modeling mechs and designing them are two seperate things. I like to make them look good and somewhat realistic, but i dont have the ability to actually make them completely feasible, thats something that im learning over time tho. you'll also notice that the gattling gun cant rotate along its pivot because it would just hit the legs, there are a number of other issues that i see in the model but ah well. thanks for commenting on the mech. I like hearing about what i did wrong. It helps me get better:)

Flat is a new feature in 7 that I didn't know about. I've used 6 for so long, I didn't see they made an addition there. So after the flat do you render or screen grab? I tried something similar and just turned on edged faces...but not happy with the result. I will have to try out the flat feature. Thanks Segreto
