View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr. 19
Michael
20-03-2005, 10:31 PM
This week's ( and a half ) Challenge theme will be colouring lineart.
In last Challenge we voted for Xtreme's great line-art piece. There was quite a bit mix with it - almost everyone either didn't post what work he's voting on, or voted for different one... so with two votes won this character, that you can see below.
http://img237.exs.cx/img237/4176/3b0tu.jpg
The main idea for this challenge will be colouring, but also ... as you can see - the image is not cleaned, so also your task will be to clean it up - look in our own 3dtotal.com tutorials, there's one or two covering that. If not - I can post a small tut here.
Be creative, post your works forconstructive critics, remember to post time of making the work. Have fun.
GO!

and actually there's some idea that i want to show, but i still kinda busy here...dont have a time to make sample for it. *tommorow is the deadline, got some exhibition around campus  really stress up *hit my head to the wall :wall:

Well, my idea for this challenge is to go creative with colouring ONE lineart by many challenge participants. It was very frequent and very popular on other forums, like eatpoo... and it's really challenging to colour the character differently than other participants.
But if you want to make a new character - you can do that. :hmm: ;) But make it like we did - first the lineart, then colouring.

OK, about cleaning the lineart : here (http://67.15.36.49/ffa/tutorials/photoshop/levels_tutorial/levels.asp)
The next step in the djusting the lineat would be to select the white are with magic wand, right click/similiar, then right click/select inverse, layer via cut.... and you have nice and clean lineart that is separated from the white background and you can easily paint beneath it.
Any problems - just write.

one quick and easy way i've learned to get my lineart ready to color is to just copy the layer and put it above the color as a multiply layer in photoshop. you still might have to play with the contrast a bit, but this gets you the nice clean black outline over the color.

1. Xtreme - the blue one - good sense of outward motion, kinda helps visually explain the cloth flying off... biggest crit I can say is, choose a light source!
2. Androgs - bright colors, and ummm... oh whatever - the only "sketchy" one actually (not important), but I just liked the colors and lighting.
3. Mimi - nice work of the smudge tool. Although I'm not too fond of the color scheme, each part of the image came out really nice, and together, they're still pretty good. Looking again, that is nice! You redefined some of his image (for the better)!
CHK - I liked how you gave him more skin and less bandages, and how you were able to pull that off. The colors are pretty good. Also of importance is that you separated it into foreground and middleground (and of course the background is not really in the distance on any of these).
David Ciprian - nice colors and painting. I especially liked the rubble, with its shading and whatnot, it even has those little highlights at the edges. I'm just not too fond of the background - the circles tend to draw the eye, and almost take away from the motion of the background.
Nappa - welcome to the challenges. The two main things that detract from the overall quality of the image both relate to noise - the motion blurred noise background, and the noise in the foreground on the rubble. The shading of the character is good, but not contrasting enough (you'd be suprised what deep shadows and little specualr highlights can do, too), and also because much of the character is gray, it doesn't "pop out" well enough from its gray background. Also the rubble seems a little incongrous from the rest of the image, as it's not connected with the appearance of motion, or as shown well in CHK's, the colors just cover up the rubble and it doesn't even have a "life" of its own. Oh, and the red bricks... we probably almost all started out with red bricks, but by the third color blocking, I figured that it would detract too much from the final image. Good entry though.
Xtreme - to comment on the rest of your images... The fire and ice ones were nice, but with the fire one, it seemed to not have enough contrast. Everything was monochromatic, but it seemed odd not to have shadows when you have so many light sources (I know, I know, it wouldn't, but oh well).
On the third one (bloodied bandages), the motion blur effect on the rubble looks really nice - the lines in the background may be a little bit skinny though. The lighting (specular especially) came out well, but there's still no clear light source.
On your last painting, it looks a bit foggy (a bit gray, and reduced contrast from the high amount of blur). Also, I had debated over whether to blur the lineart too, but decided against it, in order to keep the image clear... This image has a really nice effect, but the shapes have to be picked out, they are not readily apparent. And everything else is cool. Oh, and on all of your paintings the wispy smoke/fire/whatever came out really nice.
Thanks for the Thumbnail X'treme! This thumnail thing is a great initiative in the Speed Painting challenge!lol. Here is my vote:
1-David Ciprian: Pleasing to look at and subtile details that we have to guess from the dark areas. As Little fish mentioned, the light balls in the background could have been less prominent ;).
2-Androgs: As usual, Nice lighting and nice color scheme,...How do you do that?
3-Little fish: Nice color scheme also. Maybe more variant in the color of the hero would have given more interest!?. Something is missing and thus doesn't give enough energy coming out from the hero (or vilain). Maybe he is at the end of his battle?!...Lol
Nappa: Excellent choice for the atmosphere, the rainy day! However maybe the light on the hero is too bright compared to your given daylight!;)
Mimi: Nice variant for the background but I don't feel comfortable with the green color mixing with red. Maybe matter of taste!?
X'treme: Very hard worker! So many entries!!lol. I prefer the ****** bandage one because it has more color variants. The Third one kind of spoils the line art but I understand that you wanted to give a strong effect feeling!
Anyway, all good job!!

well as i said i took like 20 mins on it i didnt know if he was evil or good i dont know who made the picture plus i thing the red hair and bricks pull you attention to the center of the page and rain makes mist when it hits something hard that why the blur is there. anyway
1.David Ciprian i like the lighting the shadows seem to be swallowing everything gave off evil feeling to me.
2. Xtreme™ just found out you made that pic what i really like is the ones you did in mono coloring fav is the hot looking one
3.Nappa because he did it in 20min thats fastser then what most people post and it is a speed comp :D

Nice lighting and nice color scheme,...How do you do that?
Thanks, CHK.:)you meant the technique? I define the light source from bottom and paint rim light on hand, leg, body, head..etc. In the end, I adjust the level to gain contrast.;)

yes, it's image storage site... because in forum only can handle 100Kb for maximum capacity -image/pic. i can't attach them from forum, that's why i use imageshack for the thumbnails :D...
