wow!
No time to enter anything this week. And looking at the high standard i´m sure it would have been futile :)
There are so many great models . And the renders\presentations are really better than ever. Otacon as always has an ace entery, but this week there are alot of those... :)
Lot of fun watching this week. Great work people.

Unfortunately, somebody forgot to let me out of the salt mines...So I snuck out for a smoke break (hahahaha, I fooled them cuz I don't smoke) and came to tell you guys...I better get back before they realize I am gone...
Next time I'll fake a heart attack because the infirmiry has internet access!!!!

Glad you snuck out Orkron..hurry back soon.

Mimi,
I see you took a break from your awesome robot wip to join the fun. Very nice. Interesting that there are so many variations of the same thing.

mboi, I'm starting to get tired of saying "excellant" to all your models. :)
But I have to once again.

Tupu, Nice concept. Dont see many XSI users in here often.

juha : thanx for the nick and the comment ... glad you liked it . well
if its the modellin part you were referring to , heres what
i remember ........

1. THE LARGE BORE TUBE :

i started off with a standard cylinder selected the polygons at either ends individually and started with the bevel
and thats how the extruded pieces of the cylinder were done.

2. THE TONE HOLES :

the magic of boolean . tone holes are covered by pads ,
cylinders were again used for boolean purposes for the tone holes.

3. THE TONE HOLE PADS :

i had used a cylinder again , chamfered the edges .. made it smooth enough , deleted the inner poly , selected the border and extruded it 4 times to get that " groovy effect " ( lol ) and then in the front view selected four polygons ( cylinder central ) beveled it into oblivion ( to wrap around the chrome bars with the sphery ends ! ) and i have a pad ! there are two kinds there if you notice ( bored and happy ! ) select the center polygon ... hit the " inset " key ... just a pinch of it and then push poly down ... delete !

4. TONE HOLE KEYS :

"The tone holes on an orchestral flute are covered by pads operated by various keys " ... finally a change of primitives.. a box .
enough segments to shape em up ... pull vertex here vertex there.. and with a good reference pic... it came about right .

5. BLOW PIECE :

this being a transverse flute ( played to one side and air is blown across a hole near one end ), it was modelled using the all so famous cylinder again .. converted to edit poly .. vertices of of either end selected and scaled for the piece.
boolean "blow piece" with a cylinder again.

6. MISC :

the chrome bars with spheres at either end that help them keys function and hold on .. 3 of em ... one of them i'd applied
a bend modifier on with limit effect ( the extreme end with two pads ). tweakin here and there.. apply mesh smooth for the keys
and pads .

for the textured and rendered look ... i had applied a metal chrome mat with a metal map with scratches in the DIFFUSE SLOT and BUMP SLOTS respectively . bump amount - 25. diffuse amount - 55 . and also added the " beach.hdri" map (courtesy orkron ) for the environment .
4 omnis and black chrome for the floor . light diffuse glow in PHOTOSHOP (under the filters and distort menus ).

i think thats it . hope its what you were lookin for.

Rooky : you are too kind .. i love watchin your models too.

DaftPunk : lol... had a tough time... but ive managed to cross my toes as well .

daphone : very nice cozy mats !

mboi : glad you made another ....looks great !

All off them above, think below to.
Wow, totally awesome dudes. Really, really (forgot a really) good "big" trompet section with some really (like really) beautiful artistic flutes at the side.
High overall level, but I trust Andy with his kean eye.

It's a KAZOO!! :D

so here's a simple one, a didgereedoo! i haven't seen one of these here yet, sorry if someone already did it though. it's really an instrument, even though it only makes one note, i know two guys who play it, so i hope it's within the brief. modeled in maya in 14 minutes, rendered and composed in 30 (i was doing other things too...) enjoy!

Marty_McFly-3DT
30-03-2005, 05:22 AM
Well... I made this really quick just because. I'm completely jealous that DeathRipple thought of it first!!! :wall: So to pay tribute to him... I made it based off of his wireframe. Great idea dude. I also gave mine a bit of The Legend of Zelda feel to it... just because. ;)

Hey Deadplant155... there are already at least two aboriginal didgeridoos at this conest. One more couldn't hurt... I guess I'm glad I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of modelling one. :)

Kynetech
30-03-2005, 05:33 AM
Lets get somthing straight - you can play more than one tune on a digerido... I should know. They are pretty cool instrament though... many tunes... thanks i loved the model though Deadplant.

haha, sorry marty. i usually read the whole thread, for some reason i didn't this week...i' keep better track next time.

-loren

:edit: i didnt see you post till after i replied kynetech, sorry. i thought you could only play one low thrumming note on a didgereedoo, but i must be wrong, thanks for the comment!

:edit again: woot, i didn't even notice i made it over a hundred posts, im at 112, heh.

Thank you to those with the nice comments toward my trumpet model.

I created this after seeing some beautiful submissions by Lestat, mboi and juha depicting the picccolo/flute. I didn't want to mimic exactly what they had done so I created my own version. Musical instruments have always been tremendously difficult for me to figure out. My brain simply doesn't function on that level. I can play piano as long as I leave my left hand tied behind my back.

So the flute depicted below reflects how my brain would look at a flute as I would try to play it while at the same time think about the sheet music, the audience and still somehow remember to breathe and not make a slobbering mess.

Surely not a winner. But I thought it was worth showing.

15 minutes to complete. All primitives with some converted to poly to stretch using soft selection. edit; the primitives were then attached to each other except for the mouth piece and then the model was cloned and the bend modifier applied to each element.

Off topic sort of... to Lestat, would you share the technique or material file for the scratched effect in the main body of the flute render you did.

Greetings
So here comes my contribution to this round. From the very beginning I wanted to do oboe. But I have to admit... that was a bit too much. So I did what I could within hour and here I post it. The oboe to the right is just for comparison, not for competition (it lacks wireframe as well), as the right one took a bit more time, than one hour.
So to make it clear (but I believe it is clear), the two oboes to the left are competing, the right one without wireframe is not competing. It is sort of a setting for the scene :) (somebody important said before, that I can put a finished model within the image as long as the main model and wireframe are clear. And I cannot make them clearer)

So I did this in 3Ds Max 7.0, the model took me 60 minutes and texturing took approx. 20 minutes top. (thx again, fastrak :)).

daftpunk, in the time youve opened your internet browser, went to this site, find this thread, type your reply, and posted it... you could have spent almost 5 mins already on the model.... 55 mins to go!

;) anyway, im TOO busy to do anything... havent opened 3dsmax since my last entry... and now, my hot bath is waiting... time for a good bath and some decent thinking...

will see you all tonight when the new subject is anounced, to spam the first page :p

I conjured up another wind instrument. Or better to say, a "work in progress of it". Modelled in 60 minutes and textured in another 60 in 3Ds Max 7.0, this is a draft of a Legion Doomhorn form Warcraft III. What can I say... I love it and this is a wip of "fan art" :)

elshopper
31-03-2005, 01:07 AM
ok, i have made an entry, the topic is a wind instrument right?, i hope it doesn't have to be a musical wind instrument, ok here's what i made, all the facts are on the pic

nice modeling btw...:D

time to defend my model ahaha
sorry, but someone made some kind of an harp that plays when the wind blows, and then someone made a teapot, ok, my fan make a sound like this bssssssss ahaha, somewhere in my head that's a tune, andy should have named the topic a musical wind instrument, cause my fan fits in the wind instrument doesn't it?

I am sorry.. I really had taken it literally.

Ok.. here is how my personal opinion goes as it is. I believe that your entry qualifies. And I shall go through the steps of judging it the best I can.
Even if at the end of the day it shall prove to not qualifying.. the fact that since the day you had posted it you have always asked and never gotten a reply (I am very sorry for that) Shall not be forgotten.
Thank you for doing your evr best to stick to the rules.

The posting dates for the images shall be chekked on in the final judging. If for any reason you have changed the image and not reported it to one of us prehand. You and your entry shall be removed from the week.

Black

This is curious... normally we've been allowed to change our upload as long as we never altered the model in any way. We've also been told that we don't need permission to do this aswell. So why is it that now we have to ask before changing our upload? I personally have only changed an upload a few times... basically for a better render... but I just don't see why it's a problem now?

Black
31-03-2005, 11:54 AM
Marty... try to look atit this way;

There were entries that were not accetable, even ones that have been warned individually. They had the chance to remove it them temselves.. or to change them.
It was not possile to track everything from the denceness of this week. So to be on the sure side a system such is going to be applied.

Shall the reason be for any tweeks you have mentined above. I would like to encourage you to change it. But that's the part where " REPORT TO US FIRST" comes in.

I hope this makes it clearer.

Marty_McFly-3DT
31-03-2005, 12:02 PM
Since the question will be asked... I may as well ask it now. If I choose to change my upload for a better render... do you want to be asked via PM or should we use the "Reason for Editing:" field? I ask because sometimes the mods are very busy... but if you make it manditory to use that field... things would be easier on your part... and ours. Maybe even make the statement that entries may not be changed after the contest has ended without explicit permission from either Andy or yourself.

Just want things to be clear for everyone involved... :D

Black
31-03-2005, 12:13 PM
Oh no,

Approval has to be granted before any change can be been done. So just stating it in the reason is not really an option.

The contestant can post it here openly or send a private message. But the contestant has to be sure that the approval has been given before any change shall be done to the submited entry, from the moment the deadline has been reached.

Marty_McFly-3DT
31-03-2005, 12:16 PM

No long speech from me this week, just a quick apology for taking so long to get around to posting the results and a big thanks to Black for his input :)

The standard was incredibly high this week with a few of you really showing a feel for the subject.

On the surface it may appear that I chose two quite different winners this week, but if you look more closely, both exhibited a superb eye for detail and both were great representations of the brief.

Congratulations to all those who entered, here's this week's role of honour
