View Full Version : speed modelling challenge week 39 - wind instrument

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries.Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified
6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
this weeks challenge
time limit - 60 minutes
deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 30th March 2005
subject - wind instrument
Approach this one how you like, your subject can be as simple as a whistle or as complicated as a saxophone (although that's not going to happen in an hour :))
As long as it makes a tune when you blow then it counts
Andy & Black
my starter for this week is a recorder.

Not everything is as complex as it seems :)
I can hardly accept "awesome modelling" for this one.........
it's just a few lathed splines and a couple of booleans
a fair percentage of the "modelling time " was spent tweaking the spline handles and getting the exact shape I wanted and the rest setting up the boolean drills.
Actual time creating the objects was seconds - apply the lathe to each spline, make editable then boolean subtract - instant recorder :)

I bow my head in shame... But I am going to do my best - for this will be my first speed modeling challenge, looked over some of the other weeks challenges and had a go at some of them to get myself used to working in a time limit - should be interesting..

as open as this week is to alot of oppertunities. A whistle does not give out a tune, but more a single note
We had a discussion with Andy over the matter on what to exclude and this was one of the first examples he had given.

Modelling: 60 min (ran out of time, hence why there are no finger rests :( )
Textureing and rendering: 45 minutes
Software: Maya 6.0
Method: Mostly Curves and extruded SubD sufaces. Some poly shapes and Nurbs primatives.

24-03-2005, 02:01 PM
there is a huge diference between a musical whistle and a referees whistle.
examples - a "penny whistle" also called a flageolet or tin whistle, a swanee whistle would be perfectly acceptable hence my comment in the brief that it could be as "simple as a whistle". we do our best to make these briefs as understandable as possible and it can hardly be our fault when people try and bend the rules :)

hey Black On some models when I use booleans the entire model disappears. Is there any way around this other than model the holes?
Came up on a model and it has happened in the past so I thought I'd ask you.
Not sure anyone aswered your question.
But there is no simple answer to this problem.
EDIT: After you do a few Booleans (more than 1024 CV's; I think somthing like that) the Maya boolean bug kicks in. The model disappears.
Workaround: try deleting the History after each boolean operation.
Better yet, try turning off history while doing your booleans. This usally allows about 10 - 20 more boolean operations than normal.
Another possibility is to split the model into smaller sections, the perform booleans, then when done, re-attach all the sections.
As a general rule, I never do more than 9 or 10 booleans. I usally get serios problems.
By the way, the reason the bug has never been fixed is because there are over 200+ files associated with the boolean operations and functions for all NURBS and Polygons. More than 10,000 lines of code need to be looked over. Alias won't fix the bug unless you shell out 10K. At least that's what I heard from a few people who I work with. And another friend of mine at Pixar also delt with the same run around with Alias.
If you find a bug fix, please let me know.
Good Luck

Ok I know this probably doesn't fit the criteria as you don't so much blow it as let the wind do it for you. It's an Aeolian Harp that is placed in the wind and plays "nature's song." Never heard of one of these before so though I'd model it. Not quite sure how it would work in real life though. Just looks like a regular harp-type thing. Anyway here it is

aren't trumpets, trombones, tubas etc technically brass instruments and not wind instruments?
Sorry if you interpret this to be a trouble making question Black :) as it's not intended that way.
Having asked that i like the brass work so far.
V
Andy_k-3DT
24-03-2005, 05:01 PM
yes they are technically "brass" instruments but we are allowing them as they are "blown" they fit in to the brief. Harmoncas, saxophones and bagpipes are reed instruments but we are allowing them
Had we said "woodwind" then that would have ruled all of them out :)

Simple Slide Whistle
I really do hate the boolean function in max. Always messes up a mesh. And the cleaning up bit is just not very productive in a speed challenge. :wall:
Anybody have a good alternative?
I have a feeling we'll be seeing many models with holes in them.

Inspired- but its a wind instrument-
1. A musical instrument, such as a clarinet, trumpet, or harmonica, in which sound is produced by the movement of an enclosed column of air, especially the breath, and excluding keyboard instruments such as the organ or accordion. Woodwind and brass instruments are both types of wind instruments.
An instrument consisting of a number of pipes that sound tones when supplied with air and a keyboard that operates a mechanism controlling the flow of air to the pipes.
Can I got off the hook just this once Inspired?

'Approach this one how you like, your subject can be as simple as a whistle or as complicated as a saxophone (although that's not going to happen in an hour )
As long as it makes a tune when you blow then it counts'
you dont have to blow on your model to let it make a sound...
but then again, im not a mod!!! It was just my opinion! So dont hold me to it! I was just thinking it was not allowed, but its up to the mods to decide that! :)

Nice dude- reminds me of a pipe system..
Although I do thing you could use a mesh smooth here and there,
and a UVW map as well. But thats my opinion.
Nice one.
B Rumba
25-03-2005, 01:38 AM
well, it is supposed to be a pipe system.
i did actually use meshsmooth on the valves and that big red thing on the end...plunger or whatever its called.
as for UVW mapping - never heard of it and never used it. im a rookie, man.
thnx for constructive criticism anyway :)

fastrack, for your model, i would say that you could have gone without booleans by appraoching it this way-
create a tube, and modify the mesh by grabbing the top half of the vertices rotating them, and pulling them back. then model the mouthpiece seperately and just attach them.
b rumba, i reccomend you work a bit with the uvw mapping. its in the modifier stack. it allows you to re-use the same textures in different places on the same mesh, as well as controlling how the texture is placed over it. if you are using it on a scene for example, you can adjust the material so it doesnt look like an exact copy duplicated over the whole scene.

Hi everybody,
A quick search on google turned up this quasi-trumpet kind of instrument, so I decided to model it. Since I couldn't finish it in time, I decided to see how "finished" I could make it look using textures and lighting. Let me know what you think.
modeling: 1 hour
texturing: 2 hours
Rendering: < 10 minutes.
Made with Maya 5.
If anyone's interested, the reference is here:

fastrack, for your model, i would say that you could have gone without booleans by appraoching it this way-
create a tube, and modify the mesh by grabbing the top half of the vertices rotating them, and pulling them back. then model the mouthpiece seperately and just attach them.
Thanks man, That deserves a rep. I tired it and it works well. (I must learn to think "outside-the-box", lol)

Hello ppl, I can't stand to skip other competition, so because I don't have time, I search for a model that is fast to model, and to be and ideea that nobody come until now ( to compesate the poor modeling skils and poor deails and all the poor things)
And find this:
Referance: http://www.chinats.com/shop/trea/84003.htm
I hope that I will have time to model a full 60 minutes model, with detail and stuff, but until then, Hope u like at least the ideea, because i know the model is lame :( :shy:

firefly I really like the native american flute you made. The head has a nice mesh. did u convert it to subds afterwards?
andrewday your euphonium looks amazing. Did u make it with nurbs?
brazz Hi, welcome to the challenge. Very nice pan pipe, and the rendering and materials make it very realistic.
hammering3D nice model. Your model is not lame.
Finally, my second contribution for this week. I made a navy whistle. Modelled in nurbs and the hole on the head with polys. c&c always welcome

OK, Andy or Black,
This may have come up before, but I could use some advice. Concerning the wireframe and meshsmooth or sub-d. Anyone else with a how-to is more than welcome to help.
I have modeled a section of my instrument with a simple cylinder. I have done some poly-editing to it, and used an FFD to do some final tweaking. I need to put some holes into the mesh. If I used a boolean or shape merge at this time, I cannot use a meshsmooth without causing major mesh irregularities. If I boolean or shape merge after the meshsmooth, my wire frame is so thick I can barely see through it, which may cause the judging to pass over it a little faster (:)). Is there anything I can do to satisfiy these needs.....1) a boolean operation, 2) utilize meshsmooth or sub-d, and 3) have a decient wireframe.
(of course, a link to a tutorial or two that might address this would be great too!)
Thanks in advance.
BTW.....absolutely excellant models so far. Great job to everyone that has submitted.
(hey wakeup everyone....it's only 4:30am...why aren't you modeling?!?!) :smug:

What i did was to get a screenshot of the wire frame before meshsmooth and booleans and also a screenshot of the wireframe after meshsmooth and booleans. I don't know if thats neciccarily the best way to do it, but it is a solution. hope that helped ;D

Speed Modeling Challenges # 39
Is what I believe Fastrak has reffered to.
Go back and read through the posts. It has been reffered to in the earlier pages.
Make a habbit of this when attending competitions for the first time. It would save up on an amount of bad taste in your mouth afterwards.
Sorry guys.. I have been overoccupied to follow up on the questions. Thank you to those helping out with the answers.
Fastrak; Neonleopard seems to offer a very suitable solution.
If nothing works.. just post it. Lets see what the wire frame looks like. It can always be reposted afterwards.
As an alternative solution however. You COULD place the object you tend to subtract and match the original objects vertices accordingly. Then extrude it inwards rather than subtract.
(But I have a feeling it is on a concave surface and it would take alot from your modeling)

So here I go with my shot.. :)
I didn't manage to find a good example image with the trumpet so there isn't all geometricaly perfect!! Although I spend all 60 min modelling this wind instrument there were details that I had to skip to fit in the time! That was a real challange to me to modell this trumpet so the most time I spend pulling my self together because I was really afraid that I won't manage to modell it in one hour!! :D
But I am very happy about the result and I don't worry about that there are no details.
And nice models allready this week!!! Keep it up guys!! :)
Most of all I like your's otacon !! :) Great render!!
But that doesn't mean I that I don't like the others!! :haha:
Used photoshop to sharpen a bit and to make the image a bit brighter!!! And used Mental Ray to render this scene!! :)
Rooky,
even without the details you had to skip, that's still a very nice image you've created, congrats.

Hey guys.... this is a tough week for me. I'm at a loss... nothing comes to mind lately when I think of wind instruments. I guess it's because I have a complete lack of reference material. No wind instruments in my house at all... and looking pics online doesn't give me the details or angles I need. :( Nonetheless... I've tried to be a trooper and make something anyway. So here goes nothing... *sigh* (Probably my last this week...) Good luck fellas... many many great models! :D

yes they are technically "brass" instruments but we are allowing them as they are "blown" they fit in to the brief. Harmoncas, saxophones and bagpipes are reed instruments but we are allowing them
Had we said "woodwind" then that would have ruled all of them out :)
Andy
Andy a saxiphone is actually called a woodwind due to its reed in the mouthpiece, so if the topic was woodwind a saxophone would be completely within the rules. sorry to be picky.

The Sheng (Cheng) is referred to also as a chinese organ. Its the only chinese wind instrument that plays 2 notes simultaniously. The pipes go around the base which has a mouth piece in which the musician beathes in and out of, it makes noise both ways. the air then travels up the pipes, the musician keeps their fingers on the holes around the base of the instrument to keep the airflow controlled for each note. Its a very complex woodwind instrument. The more modern version has keys and a more scientific architecture. Usualy in a nice black laquer with chrome or polished steel keys.

Thanks Fastrak... Periwinkle Blue is a special color... there are subliminal encodings in that color. When you look at it... you will start to believe whatever I want you to believe. I can tell you this because I can erase your memory at any time so it'll be as if I never said it!
Now... to answer your question... we have to time travel "Back In Time" to Week 6. (Yes week 6... it's been that long... I can remember it like it was 41 weeks ago... ;) It was a time when there were no image size limits... no wireframe requirements... and Marty McFly had yet to win a contest.) Well... I had a talk with a member by the name of Despistado. He used this magical modelling technique in which he made 3 models in 1 minute 30 seconds!!! It was a mistery to everyone... and Marty was stumped... finally the answer was revealed. It was done with..... Fonts! Yes... my fancy schmancy design on the top of my harmonica was made purely with fonts! :D (You hate me now don't you? :( ) I know... it's not a sexy way to model... but it worked right? :D Hey... now that I think of it... that's a pretty useful tip. Let the Rep Points fly! LOL... (Good points... not the bad kind!)

ok, this was modeled in about 5 minutes, texture too a bit longer cause i had to draw all those pretty pictures and try to make them look aboriginal.
i used 3d studio max 7 for the model, and photoshop for the texture

Hey, I've been checking out these posts and i've gotta say i'm stunned to the max. I've noticed most people put their models in scenes. Just wanted to know if i'm allow to add a scene to my model with the 25 minutes i had left, replace the post i made with the update. or can i just make another post with the updated scene, so i don't have to put in a wireframe? This would be good so i can beef up my little Ocarina a bit. If not I understand.
thanx.
Marty_McFly-3DT
26-03-2005, 08:17 PM
Hey DeathRipple, what I would do is just make the scene for your model... then either go back to your original post and place a link to it... leaving your original entry inatct, or you can make a scene for your model... post it in the "Final Completed 3D Artwork" section... and make a link to it and add it to your signature. :D

Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DeathRipple,
The way I understand this is,
You can change the submitted image, as long as you do not modify the original model submitted. If you need to alter the model than you need to start over.
Scene content is not included in the modelling process and is only considered in judging for it's asthetics to the submitted image.
So you can put your model into a scene and re-upload and replace it as long as you do not alter the model itself.
Regardless, you are required to submit a wireframe in the same image keeping to the 800x600 guidlines.
If you just want to show off what your model looks like in a scene without wanting to show a wireframe than do as Marty suggests above and post the image in the finished gallery.
Outside links are not permitted from what I read. So I wouldn't include one unless the judges determine otherwise that this is ok to do.
These are just the way I read the rules. You might want to wait for one of the judges to cue in with a response before making any changes.
Hey Fantastic workS all! I haven't read the whole thread yet but I have seen many good models!lol. Here is my contribution, traditional instrument! I will read the whole thread later.

26-03-2005, 09:07 PM
Thanx Marty and Username, I am going to re-upload my model with the new scence included (and the wireframe). Would be funny if a simple Ocarina won anyway, so if i get disqualified I'll just remember the rules for next time. The scene is the only added extra, the ocarina model hasn't been modified.
Marty_McFly-3DT
26-03-2005, 09:19 PM
Yes User Name... you are correct that external links are prohibited... but only for submissions. You may post a link if you would like people to see your reference images or such. Personally... I'd repost the work with the scene... or post the completed scene in the finished work section... unless it's not finished... then it would go in the WIP sections. Wow... things can be simple eyt complicated at the same time... hehehe :D

Yeah, it's a real thing and yeah, you gotta "blow" the thing like a saxaphone to get any sound out of it. It hooks up to a synthesizer. Not many reference images available on this, so I don't really know whats on the underside.
But I thought this was unusual enough to give it a try.
Hope you like it. (hope it qualifies :D )

Don't we all.
If you haven't found any by "googling", then you may just have to break down and buy them. They are not cheap to produce, with specialized cameras and all, so I doubt if there are very many free ones, except for a sample or two on a few of the sites.
Good luck, let us know if you found any.

So here's my first entry this week. I was proud of the idea, bt i'm very dissapointed with it's realization. I'm not much of a face modeler, and definitely not a fast face modeler. so i just showed it from the best angle possible. This is a face with the lips pursed, like he's whistling, in my opinion that fits the brief (though it is a stretch) but if i'm wrong feel free to tell me and i'll delete it. i hope to get one more in to maybe redeem a little of my self esteem... anyway, modeled this in maya 6 in 54 minutes. I actually applied one smooth and made a few very small modifications (just tightening up some edges) and then another smooth on top of that. the wire image attached is before either smooth was applied. hope you don't hate it as much as i do!
Hey, here I am again  And with a new picture. But first I gotta say that there's some really nice models here!!!!

Modeling: 60 min. (Ran out of time)
Texturing 20 min.

fastrak your tips about the lightening and shadows are great and I will use them next time rendering my scenes! And all the same about the raytrace materials too! :)
And didn't exactly understand about the environment change! Am I allowed to change the image in my post if the model isn't modified?
fastrak
27-03-2005, 06:53 PM
I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but I believe you can update or edit your post as long as the model itself has not been modified. That has been the answer before, but I darn not speak for the Mods or Admins.
I could not get the link to show the picture, kept bringing me back to this page, but I took a ride to your site and saw the posts over there. There is a marked difference in the scene, without a doubt. You may want to tweak your contrast in your b/w, just alittle, but looking good. Mental Ray must be to your liking, I can never get a setting that I like, so I usually end up back with the old scanline.
Keep it up Rooky!
Glad the tips helped. I was hoping those posts wouldn't damage my reputation......(hint, hint.......lol, just kidding)

Alien version.
Thought it would be fun to make a flute out of this world, :ufo:
The textures are all procedurals, the object is simple disc extruded
along a curve. I did some tweaking to the model though so it took me
25minutes to complete, texturing took me 56 minutes (tested lot's of
settings).

Some nice models and renders being shown for this challenge. Good work people !
I began this challenge by trying to prove Andy wrong. I tried to make a saxophone in the time limit and failed miserbly. Even though I found some good reference images, I still couldn't figure it out. I'm an engineer by nature and I have never picked up or been close enough to a saxophone in my life to figure out how all the keys and valves really work. This was one of the biggest problems in my head. I couldn't figure out how the thing worked, and in that I couldn't figure out what parts controlled what.
I thought I could fake it and just start slapping on parts near to where I felt they should go, but when I began to make a list of the parts and began to do a trial run it was just too much. Working on a rounded surface with parts jutting out from it at particular angles was too mind boggling to me.
So, I did what all good modelers do. I gave up and pretended to tell myself I'd take on the project at a later date. (I hope I'm not the only one who lies to himself about that)
I chose to do the trumpet below instead. Nothing too complicated about it. Working with a nice side view reference image grabbed from the web makes things lots easier. Spending some time looking at various views helps a real lot. Spending that time to get to know the subject matter is essential.
I started by using the circle tool and creating the tube ends. I decided after trying the arc tool that the circle was better suited, because the circles vertices can be chamfered and then filleted to end up with nearly the perfect shape required. I then pretty much just played connect the dots with those. I lofted these splines then converted them to poly. I refined their shapes using edge loop extrusions. Where the tubes join each other this could have been done in the loft deformation set-up thingy, but the computer doesn't like that editor and grinds to a halt for some reason. I guess it has to do with screen refreshing.
The valves are simple lathes. The valve controls are lathes converted to poly. The polys were then beveled to give a serrated edge, but this doesn't show up too good in the render shown.
The mounting plates for the thumb and fingering rings were simple cylinders with a bend modifier applied to them to make them circular to fit the tubes.
The drain valve things ? were made from an extruded box and sub-d.
I like how it turned out.
Now let me see about that saxophone !
Good luck everyone.

Hello All
Some nice entry's this week..
Here's my go for the week. All simple stuff but I did run out of time, consists of 3 loft, some cylinder primitives a lathe and some editable meshes. It needed a lot of tweaking to get it where it was before the hour was up and still loads more could be done.
software: Max
Modelling : 1 hour
Materials and render: 30 minutes
Good luck everyone.

k, here's one that's a little more predictable, a harmonica. my brother has one, so i modeled his. only spent 45 minutes, i should have taken the rest to add detail to the top and maybe some textures and such, but it's late and i've got work tomorrow, so this is what you get. hey, thanks for the comment kare, glad you liked my idea for a 'whistle'. anyway, like i said,
45 minutes modeling, another 40 for render, materials, lighting and composition. maya 6.0 and photoshop. the plate part has a smooth collapsed into it, but it's just a plane with some edges extruded.
hope ya like it!

Lestat, mboi, Kare....absolutely excellant stuff, as always.
(Happy belated B-Day Lestat)
Bardur, very nice first entry (p.s., you may want to add the software your using)
Agamemnwn, nice idea...good job.
frost000, if you mean the "look" of the render, I used the max material ink n' paint. If you mean the modeling, well I just followed my reference pic. It may have been easier to do than some of these "actual" instruments.
Marty_McFly....you changed your avatar too! How come? I personally like the other one...unless the McFly labs were involved in a hostile takeover..lol....hmmmmm, let's see, first okron becames missing...then andy...and black.....Marty! What did you do! .... lol
Rooky...excellant work once again. Watch on the sharpen in PS. I will also enhance noise and aliasing as well. I like the B/W.
Good job everyone....this is going to be a tough one to judge IMO. Some really great work.

heh Heh
Well this is my new and last entry,
It does fit the brief. BLow in the fan thing, and it will turn the pully thing, which will turn the gears, which will knock the dominoes, which will cause the ball to go down the ramp, eventually hitting the piano keyboard.
:-p
So I'm going outta town in about an hour, and I didnt have time to do good textures :-(

Fastrak: Well... the avatar is an experiment. I made it in 3D Studio Max... just to see if I could. It's a 3D version of the way I used to sign my 2D art. As for the missing people. Orkron is working in my salt mines... he was taking too long on his caustics project and had to be punished. I think I'll let him out today and see if he'll behave now. Andy is working on a top secret device to moderate rulebreakers... let's just say if you thought getting slapped with a wet fish was bad... Black has been sent to my Top Secret Speed Modellers Judging Camp where he's being taught how to Speed Judge. We'll see how this works out pretty soon...
Inspired: Thanks for the comments on my "final" rendering of my last entry. I thought it came out pretty decent. As for my avatar... I guess I just got jealous that so many people had all these cool avatars... and mine was just so plain. I think it may change again though... maybe a mix between this one and my old one. I used to look for red to see my posts... now I can't find myself anymore!

fastrak thanks! And I'll watch out with the sharpening next time! :) I like your models too! With the Dr. Seuss Horn and Fife & Field case you have proved to me that it is possible to make something original in this week too!! :)
To all!! AAAAA.. all models are so great!!! I'm just so happy about that I'm competing here with so talanted modellers!! And LESTAT - I wanted to make a Flute by myself too.. but after viewing your model.. I think I'll better stay aside and watch how professionals do that!! (just kidding :D ). But any way - your model and render is just Perfect!!!!
OK! But here's my next entry!!!
Hope you'll like it!! :)

I read your screenshot post with metal map. I THANK YOU for posting it publicly and for posting it in general. You have no idea of how much help this was and what exactly this was for me :) IOU one :)
I am in process of trasmuting every "wannabe metals" into true metals in some of my scenes.

You are most welcome, JAPO. I'm sure everybody has their own way to approach metals, this is what I use now until something better comes along. I used the old metal shader, because that's all that was available to make metals on the version I was using at the time. I just kept that matlib and imported it to new versions. I keep experimenting with it though.
I do look at this forum as a learning tool, and to better hone my skills. I truly believe in the sharing of knowledge when I can. That's why I ask so many questions here. And I hope I don't get on anybodies nerves in the process.
Good luck with it...and always......play!
Rooky!
Nice job. The details are excellant! I like the sepia. Good choice for you subject. I like it alot. I sometimes feel like that "if I can't join'em, do it different!". It's hard not to come up with the not-so-obvious sometimes, especially when there are so many talented modelers here.
elhefe, daphone,Excellant entries. You guy are awesome.
and Mart_McFly....just one thing to say to you...."Let My People GO!" lol
