--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries.Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified

6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

this weeks challenge

time limit - 60 minutes
deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 6th April 2005
subject - CD-Labeler

Approach this one how you like: your subject gives the scope to do anything from a simple model to a complex machine. Just make sure that it LABELS the CD and doesn't break, scratch or damage it in the process.
Be creative!

I have made complet machine to lebel cd. I started at 23.33 and stop modeling at 00.33.
So as you can see its a full time project. Now whot i have to do its textures but this time i whant to do this right so its take more time then ever. i Thing it will be finisht tomorow or leater. Ispiration come to me from short made by Tomek Bagiński "Fallen Art"

nice starter Black and thanks very much for stepping in :)

we'll really try and catch up with the judging of the previous challenges this week - things were a little hectic and then I took a few days holiday (well I have to spend some time with the family :)).

Hopefully we'll have everything sorted this week

No problem, and thank you Andy;

Sorry for the late reply... back to work on this side :(

Actually I had to really rush it through.. So as I look at it; I am sort of amazed at how come it looks like it does.

Top of the nightish/day everyone...

Kinda rushed this- so sorry for not really getting into full detail

Modelling 30 minutes.
Rendering, default scan line- under a minute, what do you expect?!
Texturing- did it as I went, but under 5 minutes. haha

This CD labeller is a "laser" ink CD laberler- comes fully set to be hooked up to a computer, hooks up with a basic a USB cord- Plug and play- the software is already aboard the minicomputer- with a 8" monitor, for preview, and process completion information.

The claw in the middle is mechanized from underneath- it moves up and down (cylinder part) and fetches the CD's from the stock pile- the amount to label is set from the computer.
Rollers on supporting the CD- with a soft rubber material- roll and spin the cd in a circle, allowing full access to the CD.

Its gentleness and elegance give you quite the show! If you set to demo or dance mode- the mechanized claw will do tricks- perfectly.

Only 33000000 Yen.

As much as the entry is humour intended.. doesn't that rise the question; if you should have modeled the hand?
This is the printer part of the process, isn't it?
:)

I understand Orkron is in the salt mines.. and Marty is .. well Marty. But Where's Inspired? Trying to break his bad habbits?

Adamos; you can repost your image after you have rerendered shall you please. It would ofcourse be better shall you state or ask this first. But the general rule is that as long as you don't remodel things or modify them... it is safe.

I googled for a CD labeler and I got all sorts of boxes of softwares for creating your own cd labels.. I found 2 machines to label CDs and they were so weird and awkward... this subject is interresting but I will have a hard time to find the inspiration... hehehe

Good luck everyone

I want to give this one a go but time is never on my side, And you are?

Destroythenseek; Well I am not really putting out so as to say that "you posted a DQ" for Unregistered..
But look at it this way.. the title and etc is printed onto the sticker right? Then the labler sticks it onto the CD.
So the marker prints it.. but the hand gets it on the CD. :p

You know this could just go on for a few pages if you observe all the options.

I don't expect to win but hey, I can hope can't I? Anyway. This is my model (with wireframe that took me a ****** long time to work out how to put that in the picture whilst keeping the file size under 100k...grrr). The paper says
Instructions
1: Place label in machine.
2: Place cd above label on spindle.
3: Place pushing device on spindle.
4: Push down firmly.
5: Admire newly labeled cd.
6: Listen/Watch/Use newly labeled cd.
7: Send letter of appreciation to company.

Anyway...
Modelling time: approx 44 minutes.
Texturing time: approx 10 minutes.
Rendering time: approx 5 seconds (bless my 128mb vid card *sighs*)

Anyway...look upon my model in wonder now..muaha...haha....ha

I understand Orkron is in the salt mines.. and Marty is .. well Marty. But Where's Inspired? Trying to break his bad habbits?

Well... Inspired was put in charge of watching over Orkron in the mines... but he's been remiss in his duties. Orkron has been taking extended "smoking" breaks, but I'm starting to get suspicious since he never seems to be carring cigarrettes with him. :hmm: Inspired on the other hands keeps taking extended "lunch" breaks in his new car. The Bully has been commissioned by McFly Labs and Threedy Total to make new avatars for all Speed Modellers at these forums.

As for me... I'm playing with a new software package and might try submitting something with it soon. Besides... it's not often you find me on the first page anyway.

Here my entry, I don't follow any reference for model it, just inspiration with some common printers, as you can see, is a "cd-dvd printer", it works connected to a PC, like a printer... In the right coil you have blank cd, the hydraulic arm take de cd and insert it in the main unit, where it's printed following the design made in software, you can see it on the top of the printer, in a LCD screen, and you can select directly the number of "copies" pressing + or - button, the "power button" is to start the process and, pushing it more than 1 second, turn off the printer, or on if it's off... ;)
When the printed process is finished, the hydraulic arm takes again the cd and it leaves it in the left coil.
In the left small render you can see a little bearings, that these serve to take the CD, helped by a pressure system.
Thus is as the printer works.
Now the challenge data:
Modelling time: 60 minutes.
Texturing: about 4 hours :o
Setup render: about 1 hour more
Render (main picture): 10 minutes.
Software used: 3d Studio Max 5 and V-Ray to texture it.
Good luck people ;)

now this guy here is the backbone of any CD label printing machine! do you think that those machines work off electricity? and that they have all that fancy technology in them?

think again.

the reality is that practically every single device contains a bunch of these guys, and it is them who label your CDs, its them who make your computer work, its them who boil your water and make your car go. they are EVERYWHERE. but they are so small that no one can actually see them. not even with the most powerful electron microscope - yup, thats right - they are the ones who make it work and they wish to remain unseen.

true story.

p.s.:i think this is my second organic model EVER! so please be kind :shy:

No, I'm a mechanical engineering student. I learned Inventor on my own, it was on the computers in my cad classes but nobody tought it. Now I'm finally in a class that will cover some Inventor topics soon (even though I probably alread know all the topics that will be covered :)). I have only used Mechanical Desktop for FEA stress stuff. The world is going toward SolidWorks and Inventor is falling behind even though it's trying to put up a good fight. I wouldn't be surprized if I start doing these challenges in SolidWorks soon; the educational version is cheap!

well that was off topic... sorry.

hi guys, great models everyone. This is my first entry. Tried to finish it in time but...but.. its an automated conveyer cd/dvd labeler. The cds are put in the plastic holder and then from the conveyer to the labeler. The labels should come from the rollers, to the pusher and to a scrapbasin afterwards. Didn't have the time to make the cd/dvd labels from the roller to the pusher. but the cds are sampled afterwards from the conveyer to a metallic holder. :D :D :D C&C always welcome

After much consideration... we've decided to develope our own Cd Labeling Unit Extrodinair. The C.L.U.E. is a fully functioning labeling system with photoreal printing capabilities, disc balancing management, and an adjustable rheostat for double redundancy. No person who burns thier own cd should be without one... so come on guys and gals... Get a C.L.U.E. at a store near you!

This challenge looked like fun and it is! I'm a n00b when it comes to modeling, lighting, and everything else which is why I did this so I can get some more experience. Anyway less talk more post, here is my version of a CD-labeler Stamp style. :smug:

Alright! This one is moving right along. Very Cool Everyone!
Excellant subject Black / Andy! At first I thought, "Crap", gotta get in that so-called "creative" mode again, and think up something new. I like it alot!

Henry_B: Cool - power booleans work, huh? Great...gotta look into that. Max boolean and shape merge eat my lunch...and my mesh, every time.

Viper0: I like your thinking. Very inventive.

Mimi: Incredible, absolutely incredible. Very nice renders too. How do you get it so crisp?

Noyb: Excellant entry...eh..entries. wow

vladoportos: cool, very cool style.

Agamemnwn: WOW. That's tight.

Marty: What the Heck!.....lol. and the color is??? Always thinking outside-the-univer....I mean, box.

Drolith: Welcome to the challenge...looking good!

I was having a tough time coming up with something, except for the sharpie I use...and that was done right away (nice job unregistered!)

So this thing haunted my thoughts for a while...thought I would at least try it and get it out of my head....whew!

My entry is based on a 1940's Art Deco "Crosley" radio.
Has a built-in cd-r/dvd-r on the side. Stack of blanks are available when you open the lid. The label applicator is right next to it for easy access. The unit has built in wireless ethernet, audio amp w/ speakers, and a touch screen lcd to access all the fuctions. And when you close it up....nobody knows the difference, just looks like an old radio.
There is a couple of things that turned out ok in this model. :smug:
Hope it goes ok with the subject for the week.

give it a try, so far for me it works very good , and try using the make quads option, then apply a mesh smooth, what a difference!!

nice entry BTW

hello again and welcome to another presentation of Agamemnwn Design LTD. Our newest product is something for the average joe that seats the lovely nights away in front of his/her computer writing and writing cd's. The "Fast-label 2000" is the way of the future. Users can download the cover they want from their computer using the new USB2 connection cable and store up to 1000 covers in the "fast-label 2000" memory bank. With the new fully integrated LCD monitor the user can quicklly shuffle around the covers he/she wants or make changes using the touchpad directly under the screen to the cover he/she wants. The "Fast.label 2000"can even store jobs for further usage.Fast and reliable laser printing or wet on wet printing depending on the material of the cd/dvd and the look of the cover.

P.S fastrak U rule!!!! you have to learn me who to texture...:D

A dream that one day the world will see that 3DMadness!!! is the only way to go... a world where... uhh... wait... uhh wrong speach. Sorry... hehe... what I meant to say was, it all started with a box and then got extruded in all kinds of ways. I love try before you buy software!

Anyway... I just wanted to wish yous guys luck today. Be good and try not to break any rules while I'm gone. I'll be back in a day or two... I have a Papa Roach concert to go to tonight... then it's 3-4 hours of sleep before I have to go to work tomorrow... then I'm off to the movies to see Sin City! *Whew* This will be the most excitement I've seen since that party at the lab 2 years ago... yeah... let's just say it's not a good idea to mix alcohol with green jello... About Lighting:
1. Put a skylight in your scene
2. Choose from the menu Rendering/Advance lighting/light tracer
3. Use a direct light n' play with the configurations (density, ranges, falloff, Bla Bla, Bla...)
4. & Render (u know.. the button with the teapot) ;P

About Texturing:
Buy Total textures :D :D :D Its the only way & the easy way ;)

Am I allowed to post multiple pictures of my Labelmaker?

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified

Alright, so I was in bed thinking of what to model for this contest today- and I decided- hey! Lets make a camera- that takes pictures of whatever you want the label to be...

Now, I had the dilema of what kind of camera to use as a refrence- I used an autographical brownie. :-D

Well, here you are;
Modelling: 40 minutes
Texturing: 10 minutes
Rendering: (all the renders) 5 minutes, (1 render) <1 minute

better go over the rules again.

To answer your earlier question on multiple pictures....rule #3

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified

And as far as your entry......rule 5
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. This may help, as posted at the beginning of the contest, on what the subject is.

Black posted:
Approach this one how you like: your subject gives the scope to do anything from a simple model to a complex machine. Just make sure that it LABELS the CD and doesn't break, scratch or damage it in the process.
Be creative!

A label applicator not a label maker. Good luck on the next one.

Sorry Destroythenseek,
although your explaination is about making labels, I guess it looks like it takes the picture directly on the cd. Am I interpreting that right? If so...sorry about the above post. :dunno:

Dictionary.com says that "Label" means

tr.v. la·beled, or la·belled la·bel·ing, or la·bel·ling la·bels or la·bels
1To attach a label to.
2To identify or designate with a label; describe or classify: labeled them Yuppies.

Based on Definition number 2
Here's the Cd Labeler...He LABELS the CD and doesn't break, scratch or damage it in the process.

When CD's were just coming on the market, the Gutenburg was the only way to get it printed and labeled. ;) lol

Modeled after an old style printing press....modeling was mainly primitives (boxes) and shapes. Did a little poly editing and I think I chamfered just about everything. Texturing took alittle time though. I think it turned out pretty decent.

90 mins is great you need to share your settings,Everyone is getting into long hours to render stuff.Ive been using maxwell too and some of the renders took 40 hours. One guy render took 2 weeks

Its getting there still in alpha stage but i know its going to be great.

the_bully: I thing maxwell render very depend on hardware and type of procesor you use... I didnt use maxwell until this new release because it doesnt support HT.

I renderend it on my: Dula Xeon 2,4Ghz and 1,5GB ram machine, i rendered it also (the same scene) with my laptop whitch is Centurino 1,4 and 512Mb ram. To achive similar picture it took 8 hours....

My record in render time is 6 days with finalRender i rendered that wip picture, link is in my signature...

No you cant run window apps on a mac with out something like virtual pc
which those not work that well because its a emulator.
There are some games for mac mostly the really popular ones like doom3 and call off duty.
Macs are really not for games there more for designers and video editors,
and slowy turning for 3d artist. The OS is rock solid i never worry about spyware, pop ups, worms, viruses,or anything of the sort.In facted A company just had a contest to give away 20,000 to any hacker that can make a virus for macs.
Some poepl will complain and i dont want to start a war here about the prices of macs.True every system i own cost more then 3,500 just for the tower. But those times have changed now with the macmini which is $499

Vlad and Henry, some nice looking industrial renderings and labelers you've created !
The two printing presses are very nicely done and creatively thought out as well. Sorry, I've already forgotten who did them... but great work ! The 2nd one needs a little more lighting in my opinion.

I probably get disqualified for this, but I thought I'd re-submit it and see what happens. I didn't agree that the Sharpie was not to be considered a labeler, and that the hand was the actual labeler. The label in the case of a Sharpie is the ink itself, which in turn makes the Sharpie the labeler.

I added the hand (as suggested) to the original Sharpie with my unused 55 minutes, which I think is acceptable for submitting. Since the sharpie wasn't modified from it's original model condition (shrug ?).

Incomplete hand was box modelled using edge loop extrusion. A messy model.
CD texture was created with standard max procedurals and is light and camera interactive. I've still not tweeked out the settings with it yet, but it's getting close.
Quickly and terribly composited.

we write the rules, you follow them ..........

"2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries.Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified"

yep you are right about getting disqualified :)

Not a big deal being disqualified, it was in question anyhow.

However, according to Black, the Sharpie wasn't a labeler, so, seeing as it isn't the labeler, then how is does it make it disqualified ? Isn't it just a prop, since it isn't a labeler ?

Super great models this week... better than I thought things were going to go. Too many nice models to mention them all... but yous guys know who you are. I think I'm 90% recovered from the Papa Roach concert Friday... it was pretty sweet... even if I did have to miss Who's Line is it Anyway? Thanks The Bully for mentioning my new avatar... a mix between my old one and new one with a twist... but I really like the things you do on the vecter side of things!

Anyway, here's the Suck-up model of the week. It has a touch screen interface so simple and easy to use, even an eight year old can label thier own cds!!! (Pay no attention to the middle button... it's password protected!) I have one or two more ideas... I'll see what I can do before deadline.

How simple is it?

I actually posted the rule you broke - deliberately.

You were the one who submitted the first image as your entry that makes it an entry not a prop.

You are more than willing to sit at your computer arguing with me but remember two things

1, we run these challenges to help you understand how a client may ask you to submit work - would you argue with a paying client or act isn such a childish manner as you are doing now?

2, each time I have to answer one of your deliberately provocative attempts to undermine the challenge I leave you negative rep points - your last two posts have cost you 10 points each :)

Another Art Deco Inspired CD Labeler. Slip the blank disk into the top of the tower, select the label, and the finished product comes out down below.

Had to do a lot of planning on this one. The monitor is not meshsmoothed. I used a bevel profile which made it fast and easy, but the mesh ended up super thick. I gonna try and play with this modifer somemore to give me more of a cage and see what meshsmooth does to it after. Other than that, some primitives and extruded shapes and a lathe object. The FFD really comes in handy. I'm pretty pleased with the result. Used vray to render.

Info is on the pic. C&C very much welcome. Hope ya'll like it. :)

What on earth is going on here?!!! I am sure glad I missed out on some stuff.(Thanks Andy)
Before playing the broken hearted, when did I DQ it as it is.. I had found it funny and left it as it is. Pointing out to others to not do the same mistake in the meanwhile. It was your behavior that got things up to where they are.
I had clearly pointed out that your pen was not puting any labels on a CD. (And it is NOT just according to Black... it is according to a great majority of the world who knows what a CD and a marker is). I hope you are capable of grasping that now.
And honestly, had you actually expected a model that took you less then 10 imnutes to make, be able to compete at a higher level? And how great was it to pay such a higher price for it?

I am tired of telling people that what is said is to help you more than anything else!
I am sorry you don't think so.

well, un thing was the hdri, it painted my scene way too much!
y put the hdri in the enviroment slot of the material , not in the scene and problem solved.
second thing was the lights, tryed diferen ligts set ups but nothing.

but this model helped me a lot, i tryed diferents setups and options to see how those works, so i learned a litte, still much more to learn!

Nicely done. Did you do the DOF in max or take it in photoshop? If photoshop, how...? I would like to learn the technique.

Henry_B
Yes, the hdri can "paint" it pretty heavy, depending on the map you choose. I have looked at some greyscale hdri and have gotten some interesting results. Also, I didn't use any lights what-so-ever in my scene. What kind of multiplier do you use when using lights and hdri together?

Agamemnwn
04-04-2005, 10:10 PM
Thanks Mimi01 :D:D .

LESTAT Like the concept. Looks like a pressure labeler cooker. :D Nice, clean modelling

fastrak if your are using the new photoshop cs u can make and alpha channel and fill in with the gradient of your choice. preferably white to black. The white will be not blurred and the black fully blurred. Then u go to filter--->blur--->lens blur and use the alpha channel you made as a mask to apply the lens blur. Use the settings u want and apply the blur. If it comes to hard you can go back and apply with softer settings or fade the blur in edit-->fade lens blur.
To make the DOF in Maya i go to the attribute editor of the my render camera and on the focus distance tab i make an expression :renderShape.focusDistance=renderShape.centerOfInt erest; and for the fstop tab i put numbers from 9 - 20 (9 really blurred-20 just the edges)

Hope it healped a little. :D

. What kind of multiplier do you use when using lights and hdri together?

i was using a very low multiplier(0.1), and still like that the scene had way to much light. i remove the hdri and the light came out to normal.. strange.. so correct me if i'm wrong, when you put an hdri in the enviroment slot, the hdri also produces light as if it were a light source??? (-Vray-)

In a word, yes. I haven't try mixing them yet, so will have to give it a go. You can turn down the amount of hdri in the material slot. By default it's set at 1.0, but depending on image, it could go either way, higher or lower. Also, by rotating the map in the material slot, you can adjust to which direction the hdri maps light source(s) come from.

First thing I noticed was Fastraks' latest design. Very nice modelling, nothing but good things about your modelling skills, specially when you look at the improvements u make model after model!

Just a small comment on the CD-input/output openings. The CD is going in vertical and comming out horizontal, this could be done if the actual part in which it is moving would be atleast the size of a CD or bigger. Yours is actually smaller than a CD in which you would have to use flexible CD's...

Keep it up!

Anyhow I just started to check up on the challenge, like the Chinese starting at the back an reading to the front.

Keep it up!

as i see it ( sorry Andy and Black ) this is a SMC and though you may have opinions regarding " THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY " of the model or anythin for that matter , you have two options :

1. Keep your comments to yourself ( for SMC'S)
2. Send the modeller a " P.M "

i think its way too rude what you just did .... which i dont mean to be whilst posting this ..... takes out the fun of the challenge !

fastrak : : yes i used Photoshop for the depth of field effect ... im using version 6 of the same ... opened the file ... made a random selection around the area i wanted to look " out of focus " added a feather ( under SELECT menu ) of 20 , added a filter called " Gaussian Blur "
( under Blur sub menu ) with a radius of 4.5 ... enter .... deselect ( Ctrl + D ) and there it was . very boring but mental ray was givin me slight issues which i managed to solve later on . if you wanna know how to do it thru max ... holler !

Agamemnwn : : thanx ... kinda think of it .. :shout: YOURE RIGHT

First, let me start off by thanking you on the critique. You are absolutely correct. Given known technology limitations, the path for the object would be impossible. I believe I have seen your comments on feasibilites before and I for one found them refreshing. I struggle with issues like..."could it really work?" and instead, unfortunately, relate more to "does it look good." I had thought about doing a straight through from front to back, but I nixed it, only because I didn't want to render a back view also. Thanks for the complement and the comment. :)

LESTAT
You know, that almost sounds easy enough for me to try (:))....I can be so dense about rather obvious solutions. Thanks for being so forthcoming on such a simple solution.

Thanks for the comment.

fastrak
05-04-2005, 08:50 PM
Heh, i would love to be able to afford "quality" ram....but I did the cheap route. I've got 2 x 512. I upgraded mainly to be able to use my computer for other things while I render. I haven't really seen that much improvement in speed during rendering for vray though. It takes such little resources as it is.

After reading my own post I think I understand where the rudeness sliped in :smug:
It was in no way my intention telling people to make feasible models! Not at all! All I do is point things out so people might consider them when making a new model, or they don't give it any consideration at all. Do with it as you please!

Since I'm new to 3Ds Max and can't really help people tellin' them what settings or mats to use I try helping them my way...

I never use anything but a marker to label CD's, so I wasn't sure what to model, so I just made something up and here it is.

modeling - 60 mins
texturing - 15 mins
rendering - s/w render(left image) - 2 mins
mental ray final gather render(right image) - 15 mins

Lots of details are still missing... I?ve spend a lot of time getting the edge loops correct in at the intersection of the rounded main shape and the chamfered cutout.

INSTRUCTIONS Place the copied cd ? full of illegal software or games - in the upper part where it's hold in place by the green thingy. Place the Label upside down in de lower part and close the whole contraption. Then all you have to do is press the green thingy and your finished.

As you work with more complex models (like a warhammer 40 k dreadnought i am working on) the more details the more time and for reasons that i think would understand to see it in shaded mode and turn it takes its time. so i work in layers now. to optimize my time and work for flexible. :D

Hey everybody! I haven't been around for a long time, though maybe some of you remember me. I thought it was about time I got back into these challenges.

As Andy said, useability will be taken into account when judging the models, so I figured I'd model something original that could, in theory, actually work. As you turn the handle around, the brush on top inks up the roller while moving the conveyor belt along, bringing the CDs under the roller, and printing the label onto them (hopefully)!

Also, if this model was to become a reality... you'd have to order custom-made rollers... and they'd only be monchrome...

Modelled in 3dsmax, rendered with Brazil (and Shag for the brush) and took under 60 minutes.

cute....cute...cute....hey, did you actually model the face on the labels or are they textures. It looks like you modeled them in the wire frame.

escaped_monkey
Good job. Actually you could do offset with multiple colors and multiple drums. But maybe we'll let the manufacturer figure out the registration process for that. Very nice....like the "usability" factor (I gotta do more of that...dratts) lol

Hi Everyone, I'm new here. This is my first post.

The CD LAB
3DS MAX 7
Modelling time - 35 mins
Texturing time - 45 mins
Render time - 2 mins 19 secs (Default Scanline with Light Tracer)

Here's how its supposed to work:

The CD to be labelled is hooked up on the cylindrical shaft.
The sticker sheet is placed on the printer box (after peeling off the film, meaning its ready to stick).
After the sticker has printed, the blade (along with its holder) is shot down to cut the sheet in circular shape & size of the CD.
Then the shaft brings the CD down, it is pressed against the sticker and ... The CD is now labelled!!!

If anyone's wondering what that black circular strip on the printing top is, its some kinda hard rubber that can withstand the cuts from the blade, and at the same time it won't damage the blade!

Hi there fast and hope you're well mate!
The image I created was purely from an ideas perspective as I feel (and it's just my personal opinion) that ideas take more and more of a backseat in these threads to the technical aspects of 3d image production. Where would we be without ideas/concepts? Ideas/comedy/creativity is what separates the Incredibiles from the Final Fantasy's of this world or am i wrong?...damn i'm so controversial these days eh Black? I will be working up a newer more modelled version on Thursday using up the final 25 minutes of the 60 minutes alotted time so i can do the idea the justice that I feel it deserves. I realise it will be after the deadline but hey ho I never get anywhere anyway :lurve:

oh and by the way the little smiley faces were just a rather quick texture applied on top of the cd mesh.

By the way I thought your work was quality as usual, keep it up my friend.

I don't understand if thats a question...

But if you are stating the use of idea's and the self questionings.. I think I would have to agree.
To my personal oppinion, if you have come to a state that you are disturbed by small things and know you could have done a little adition to make it better. I think you have something to be proud of. There is a bottomless pit in what you can create. And an even deeper pit from which you can choose techniques from.
So it would be simply ingorance up to a level if you weren't so picky about your own stuff.
Acceptional concepts are judged highly. But you see you have to be able to back it up with the MOST basic rule of this game: "Modeling".
Had the challanges not given room for conceptual approuches I don't think individuals at such creative caliber would care to stick around.

The best is to have a rich coctail of individuality with your personal touch or idea's mixed with as good modeling. Shall of the two modeling or concept leap more forward; Do expect the better modeled entry to have a higher value.

This is a competition none the less. The friendly and helpful atmosphere between most contestants is a golden touch. But in order to have a forward leap in it you should prepare to do all that you can in extra to be one step better.
A CD is only a complimentary token to your hard earned abilities. Else you are already awarded generously.

I hope my personal approuch has helped you get a better picture of this side.

Um yeh kind of matey, I know me and you haven't always seen eye to eye on some matters but I seem to agree with MOST of what you've said there. As a working illustrator who uses alot of 3d in my work, I am under considerable pressure from clients everyday to come up with ideas first, 3d production last (as it's taken for granted) so maybe that's why I think like i do. For me the idea will always be everything but I will adhere to the forum rules that you and Andy have laid down and attempt to put alittle more effort into the modelling side of things...

I'll see what i can come up with, within the alloted 60 mins of course (but that's another story, let's not go there again eh) :smug:

Welcome and good job. A couple of things to mention....work on making your wires a little more easier to see, that will help the judges see your work better. Also, try to add a few more segments into your objects, specially rounded objects. It will give it a smoother look in the final. Keep it up! Look forward to more!
BTW...you can edit you post if you forget something...so you won't need to make another post for additions. Just don't change the image without permission. :)
