hey jason, an alpha map is quite very simple , its use widely on games , every game uses it, its an image that we can use for example...to make fences, chain, etc, cause its an image that uses greyscale values to give transparency, it is used on the opacity channel at 3ds max.

it works like this : white = solid
Black = trsnparent
gray = semi transparent

for example, ya wanna make a fence, ta make the texture, and then paint above it in a separate layer teh alpha, with the transparency ya want to achieve , it would be something like a white group of stripes with black squares in the midle

ill provide an example soon ;)

what I hate about alpha mapping is that motion blur doesn't apply behind the transparent part of the alpha mapped object... any way to counter that other than using layers??

One thing I would add to what 'goat' said is, don't have a white background on your diffuse map, it will leave a white border around the outside. Make it almost the same color as the part that you want to show.
