Good One! My mon had one of those, actually I think I gave it to her as a gift once....we used it maybe three times, and got tired of cleaning up all the cheese...lol. Yellow is cool!

Fastrak, I've got one to (it was my reference). And I never use it to on the same reason. Using a frying pan is more easy, :D

one word....wow.
I like the "tongue-in-cheek" settings. I would have thought it better to put the cord on the side or back, but very nice and detailed all the same.
Excellant entry...............again. :)
gan3d
Good one. I've never seen one of those before. Did you make the grill using an opacity map? (not sure what it would be in Maya)
Thanks, Yes I applied grid on transparent map to get the grill kinda effect. Its quite common in india, we have both coil and non-coil heater, for non coil people use wood to burn. actually i was planning to do that but donno how to do wood n fire in maya.

software used - 3ds max 7
model time - 50 mins
textured in - 15 mins
render time - 15 mins

wow what a superb work  . I like the steel texture a lot on ur models. I have been seeing all the posts for a quite sometime and i observe that lots of people have base(floor) and bgnd kind of merged, i see it in ur image also. How to do it?? :wall: I usually keep one plane for floor and one for bgnd.
Hope am not asking tooo many questions.sorry.

hehe, weve got one like that too... but the ppl here (read: my mom, and my brother...) never clean up the cheese... so when i want to make my own 'inspired-sandwich DeLuxe' i have to clean up their dirty cheese...(I HATE cheese!)

Oh! i forgot to mention, I found a script spiral.MLL to create a spiral(coil) in maya. Its pretty good. But I like your method since it gives me more controle over the mesh by adjusting the ep curve ;P .

Sweet I'm glad i could help, check out this coil

Great models this week,
I'm very impressed by a few.
Henry, I have to say I am extremely impressed by the level you've moved to, great models this week and good use of Vray - I too am learning Vray for it is a beautiful render system (I like it better than Brazil) - Bully is trying out Maxwell and it looks good but the render times are excrutiating! Hehe
Lates all.

first of all " asking too many questions " is why the forums is so hip
except disturbing the mods with the inevitable " when is .. ? " queries (j/k) ... but yeah i did use a plane for the base .. applied a Gloss White Mat ( default raytrace mat in 3ds max ) and added a background map which the base plane reflects , thus the merging illusion . hope thats simple and understandable . cheers !

Lol Fastrak... You're quickly coming into replacing Inspired as the resident SMC Spammer. I'm going to have a few job openings in my labs if you're interested... I'll look up the details later. All you would have to do to show your interest is to add the chant 3DMadness!!! to your posts from time to time... believe me... there are many benifits in having a Mad Scientist on your side! I already have a robot's toe named after me... and maybe a whole robot soon... my last employee was givin a car for his services... and you may even be givin amnesty from the hypnotising Periwinkle Blue! :D
Mimi... Thanks once again! I'm glad you think my models are worth mention... your models always have such nice details... I can only hope one day to bring that much to my models. :)
Fastrak, Vladoportos, Perchik, Henry_B, and many many other have been kicking much butt this week! I might have one or two more in me this week... just trying to juggle SMC with my Mermaid. We'll see what happens. Oh... and Happy Birthday Mr. Black! :D

Hi after really long time I am back to Threedy Forum:
Here is my entry:
I am an industrial design student, in my school everyone makes fun if someone takes toaster as his/her project, as every third student of industrial design used to take toaster as the project. In most of the design school all over the world this is one of the most common things taken as project by student.
I never got the ‘opportunity’ to take toaster in any of my project, so when I saw this as the theme for speed modeling challenge, I could not control myself…..
The design is mine; I am not showing the sketches as 800x600 is too small for everything…the modeling very simple and basic, internal components are not made, it was entirely modeled on rhino and rendered in 3DSMax6, All times are exact.
Saiko - question - How do you make your toast go down? I don't see any levers or whatever :)
Methis - nice toaster, although it looks like my son's sippy cup going nuclear! Right down to the blue color and everything.
Methis
12-04-2005, 07:29 PM
Lol :haha: So? Is that a problem?
Besides, I know I don't stand a chance, I just made it for fun. A little practice never hurt anyone :)
If you want a toaster that looks the part after all the nukes hit, you're going to need one of these. Made of scraps of old metal, this toaster can survive a beating (just don't shake it too hard, the toast brackets are a bit loose). Featuring adjustable temperature control and raisable bread support you'll never be without toast again! (even after WWIII).
Modelled in 60 minutes.
Textured in... ummm... I lost count.
Rendered in 2:17.
Max7 for modelling.
Photoshop for texturing.
VRay for rendering.
Just a side note, some of you might not believe that this competition is OVERLY realistic with regards to real world scenarios but recently I went to a job interview where I was given half an hour to model anything I liked. At the time I had no idea how much I could model in half an hour and, thus, I ended up with something really crap. I didn't get the job.
If I had known about and entered one of these speed modelling challenges I would probably have been much better prepaired.

Saiko - question - How do you make your toast go down? I don't see any levers or whatever :)
It has built in mechanism for doing that, you just hav to press the front button toput the bread in and same button if u want to take it out before the automatic timer pushes it out .
Its not a space-age concept, now can find toasters which doesn't hav that prehistoric lever system.

i like it, u saved it too small though.
Ok if you're using photoshop, simply press cntrl + alt + shift + S (for PC),
apple + alt + shift + S (mac)
you'll get the option for Save For Web... There you can adjust the quality, from low to high (under 100kb)
Dopetrick, if you have photoshop, just go to 'File' > 'Save for web' and play with the quality until it says a number less then 100k down at the bottom.
Also, you are only supposed to submit one image.
Your toaster looks nice by the way, it'd be nice to see it bigger.
Marty_McFly-3DT
12-04-2005, 10:16 PM
Hey Dopetrick, your images are really small... and you should only post your true entry here. Take down your seond pic nd put a link to it if you want people to see your creation in a completed scene. Next, you really need to bring up the size of your entry... I can barely see it now and I'm on my laptop with a 1024*768 resolution. You need to get yourself some jpeg compression software if you're not using Photoshop 7 or later. Worse comes to worse... send me the full size entry and I'll compress it for you.
Drat... two posts already before mine... I really do reply too slow!

Hey Rooky
The toaster you've modeld is a Dualit. It was the first toaster I thought of whene reading the briefing. As a matter of fact I'm rendering my own model of the Dualit. But its gone take some time becouse v-ray may be faster than mental ray but its still slow on my machine (and I'm not very good at texturing)

fastrak: I love that idea, always good to see a bit of humor.

not alot of time to do something for this week's challenge but had an idea (which i always ust have :lame: ) and the bonus was that it involved using a primitive..which was nice! Oh yes it makes 3 slices of toast in one go also  .

Looks nice, but where would you put the bread?..
i'm assuming this was directed at my egyptian thing, well the bread would go where the orangey glowing bits are as in a toaster :smug:
There are 3 sides of the pyramid that have vertical extrudes to hold the bread and the little handle at the side lowers them into place. i thought it was pretty self explanitory.

hey kev thats looks awesome. great idea
Hey, thanks roach.
I guess my toaster needs a little explaining. It should make sense from the renders but I'll put this here just to make sure.
- The knob and on the left is for changing how dark you want your toast.
- The display on the left shows which setting your toaster is on. (i.e. "defrost" or "light"). Unfortunately, you can't see this in the render
- The big dial on the front displays how much time there is left in minutes and seconds as well as in 'laymans terms.' This can be helpful when someone who isn't near the toaster yells out "How long on the toast?" By simply glancing at the toaster, you can tell them "It's nearly done" or "There's still a while."
- When the toast is ready, a 'ding' can be heard and the little red light next to the dial turns on until the toast is retrieved.
- The lever on the right is what all toaster levers are for.
- The holes in the top are where bread slices go in so that they can be transformed into toast.

Why have just plain toast when you can have something worth thousands of dollars? The EBayAtron 3000 generates custom celebrity images. Patented radiant and laser technology can apply the likenesses of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and others to ordinary toast.

Welcome to the forums. I'm sure you'll find this a valuable resource. Just a note on your entry. Please use the "manage attachments" button to post your entry, and not a link to the image. I'm afraid it could get disqualified if it remains this way. You may want to review other previous posts and the rules a little more.
(nice idea BTW.) Hurry and "Edit" your post (the little button on the bottom right of your post will do the trick.)

Good Job!
If I may make a comment, you can post the "how I did it" in your text part of the post, that way it will leave more room for you images and the ever important wireframes. You don't have to for this one, and it isn't a rule, maybe for the future. Makes it neater that way :)

A big welcome to the forums.
thx. :)
Nice to hear from a fellow Imagine user. I cut my teeth on that program....and cutting it was, no thanks to that sorry piece of literature they called a manual. :wall: Although I had an Amiga, I didn't get the program til it was ported for windows. I stuck with that thing for a couple of years....actually made some money off of it. Last I heard it's still available, but I haven't checked for awhile.
Yeah.. its a beast, but when you got used to it at some point it was nice, still... nothing comparable to the today programs. No NURBS, etc. you had to make every soft form manually, thats why i usually didn't made soft form objects with it. ;)
Anyway, excellant entry. Good Job and hope to see more in the future. :)
Thx, yep.. wanna try to get some practice by participating on challenges. As I'm pretty timeless because of my job I'll probably never find the time to realize all my own ideas, but spending a fixed amount of time on challenge tasks works out, i hope.
@all:
some very nice entries around. congrats, learning a lot by just looking at a few pics.
some of u seem to use HDRI images for a quick indoor environment reflection on chrome materials. Are there some free to use royalty-free indoor images available on the web or are you guy creating these images yourself? Would be thankful for a few hints here. Thx.

Thanks All,
When I previewed this all I could se was text. The only other thing I could think of was the img command. Usually when I have a 50/50 chance I get it wrong 100% of the time.
hey, we all know how it is, it's cool :) and welcome
apparently there's some issue where attached images dissapear if you try to preview your post, so people make that mistake all the time. thanks for reading out posts and fixing it, and i hope you have fun here.

it would be wise, to delete your entries, before one of the moderators sees them, so you wont get DQ'd, and Read the rules, before entering them again!
secret hint - read ALL the rules, but pay extra attention to rule 3 and 5...you can find the rules at the first page of EVERY challenge...

Modeled in 45 min with 3DS Max 7
Rendered with Brazil on my new AMD 64bit 3500+ with 2Gig of RAM and dual SLi linked Nvidia 6600GT video cards. Soooo fast compared to my old comp.

Hi everybody,
Some great models this week! I was trying to figure out how to make mine a little different, so I went for an older, beat up, rusty toaster, instead of a bright shiny new one. Texturing took a while, I'm still pretty slow at it (I could probably tweak the layered shaders forever), but here you go:
Here's the reference (http://www.robin.com/gal/images/toaster-microwave.jpg)

Well, this is my entry for this week. I wanted to make toaster of my own design, so here it is :) It is Evil Toaster of Captain Nemo :) It took me 60 minutes to model, texturing took approx. 15 minutes, lighting... well if this was speed lighting competition, I would not qualify :). And render was like 15 minutes.
Oh and it was Max 7.0. (Until Max 7.5, it will be always Max 7.0 :smug:, but I will write it anyway)

I modelled that last one and the flying toaster in Silo... then imported into Max via a Max script... (Mainly because of funky artifacts if I import .3ds files!) For the flying toaster... I only modelled one wing and then mirrored an instance in Max and applied a 3*3 FFD to get the wings to bend the way I wanted. I'm sure I could've done something smiliar in Silo with Soft Selection... but since I'm new to Silo... and for the sake of speed... I did it that way. As for your second question... Yes. I definately like it... it's still a growing tool... and definately needs a few more features, but it's very strong right now and I'll continue to use it in future models. :D (Besides... for $109.00 you can't beat the price! Well maybe you can... but I liked the interface immediately and many free programs were just too cluttered for my taste!) Silo is very cool!
Fastrak: Thank you. Although I like your models more. Especially that metal with glass panel. And I have message for you from a friend at work - she is crazy about that blue groovy toaster. Where can she get it? :)

Hey, Marty, Thanks! I may have to swing by their site and check it out for myself....and the price is great if the product is decent. How does it handle things like booleans, you know, that stuff that max has no clue on how to do. LOL

Marty_McFly-3DT
14-04-2005, 02:57 AM
Well... booleans are best left to Solid Geometry modellers. Since Silo is mainly a SDS modeller.... booleans won't be "great". I've yet to try them... but I have heard complaints. www.nevercenter.com is where you can download a 17 day trial version of Silo 1.3 You can also download a non-trial version... but I think it's limited in some ways. Check out the videos of Silo in action... that's what convinced me to download it. After using it for like a week... I decided to buy it. (You can even completely customize the mouse and keybaord to make it just like Max! :D Keeps the workflow easy when moving between the two programs!)

yes, a lot. simple, but perfect.
I tried to rebuild it, but can't figure out how to get such clean 'bump' of the bottom part. modeled (in parts) very same box as shown in your wireframe, but it does not want to look like it in the final rendering after adding the thing to a hyperNURBS, also tried with different hypernurbs weights on the edges, but no luck.

Hello and welcome. You have done very well with only 5 days under your belt. I don't I could model a box within my first week! LOL
A couple of pointers on submissions, however. First and foremost, become very familiar with the rules....may need to go over them again. Second (and the rest of these stem from the rules) always include somewhere on your post, what software you are using (looks to me like max). Second, please include a wireframe/screengrab of the wire to include in your pictures (make sure you only post one image). Third you can edit a post, even delete a double post if you need to.
Hope to see more, and have fun while your at it. :)

Didn't notice which software you use but how I saw in your scene you used at least one spot light and in 3ds Max you can add shadows in the spotlights properties dialog at the right side of your screen - in the shadows section just chek the box at the "On". Of caurse these will be the simpliest shadows but if you want something better just search some tutorials in internet or even here in the Forum you can find many good advices. For example Fastrak is goot at shadows and he has helped me too. So maby he can help you learn more faster and qualitative. :)

just a quick thought, i normally dont like when people try to rush the mods by saying the usual "Hey when's this going to me marked" about 5 minutes after the comp closes for the week, but this one and a few others havent been finalised by the mods yet and the hand tool one which is a few weeks after this one has been voted for and a winner found... so just a quick and polite question to the mods... I mean all of this in the most 'non annoying to the judges' way as possible so as you don't take into account the annoyingness of this post when judging my model....
gee...
after all that....
now that I think of it... Im not even sure if I submitted any models this week...
Your idiotic 'non-annoying' post shall be kept in mind while judging

Another set of results and another apology for them being so late - time really is at a premium for me at the moment. So, SeamZ2B posts like yours don't help. May i recommend you take a look outside your window at the real world? So much happens out there it's quite frightening really :)
I think that this week Fastrak has scored a first with an image in every section :)
Again, with so many high quality models it was hard to pick winners but here we go......

WHAT! YOUR TELLING ME TO LOOK OUTSIDE THE WINDOW!!!?? and whats with that smiley face after your comment! PFAH! as if thats gonna make it all good or something.. I hardly have time to do these challenges but I make time so I can have a bit of fun.. what about the people who do 5 or 6 models a week (at least they don't have a winge like me I suppose but Im gonna stick up for myself).. just this week I have been on a houseboat went to a bday party, funeral, and helped make a short film, so you can stick that smiley face back in the smeileys box...

SeamZ2B: You need to calm down bud.
A: Mod's do not get paid
B: They do this stuff for us in their SPARE time.
C: Mod's have lives as well and can't come to your every beck and call.
D: Being a sore loser and changing your signature to that sure won't solve the problem.
Everyone Else: Nice job on the SMC. Congrats to fastrak and vladoportos.
Marty: I'm surprised your up there as well. Na just kiddin good job bud.
Yay, finally the results are results are released.
Congratulations vladoportos, fastrak, braggart and all people who got honorable mentions.
This was my first speed modelling competition and I would have been very happy with an honerable mention so getting runner-up was a big surprise!
