Wow SeamZ2B - THAT one is surely more used than my tool.
Maybe only the real swiss knife is missing then.
Good modeling.
What about using the tool with the "right stuff" before a modeling session
Expect the unexpected... ;-)

Attention all newcommers to the Speed Modelling Challenges... you are not suppossed to come into these challenges making good models from the start. You're suppossed to make bad models for at least 3 to 6 months before you improve to a higher level. Please take note of this and edit your entries accordingly. All good models from newcommers will be ignored because I don't want you to win.
Thank You.

Nice models everyone! Just unbelievable how good you all are! =]
Here I go with my 3rd this week! Missed with the sprockets but didn't have no more time to remodel! So if you will look in the wireframe closer you will see that my bottle-screw wouldn't work in real world! :D LOL And the drill isn't the way I wanted - but you know I'm still practising and don't have the skills yet to make everything I want in the 60 min :o But anyway I hope you'll like it! :)

HooDLuM and Antto.....Cheers guys. It was certainly alot easier to texture these than the Stilsons I made earlier.
SeamZ2B Very good, very crisp image. nice detail.
Vince very impressive. Great bit of modeling.
...gonna pick my brains now, see if i can come up with a 3rd entry....good work everyone.

I'm not sure if you would consider this a hand tool, but I'll give it a shot:
This is the remote control that came with my TV card. I decided to model it out of pure boredom, and while waiting for it to render, I realized that there was a speed modelling challenge on hand tools. So I give you:
noouch's cheap TV card remote control
Modelling: Approximately 25 mins. (I didn't exactly time it, but it comes close to the actual time)

For the twisted end of the cillinder I used a simple boolean with a spring and if you would look closer in the wireframe you would see that I had to set the polys for the cillinder to a very high number to have a better result after booleaning. But I missed with the spring cause I wanted to make the wholes more deeper but I lost time on trying to fix it and had to leave it as it was!

Well I don't know about Lightwave... but you can try a loft with different shaped splines as control shapes. (If that sounds like it makes sense.) In Max you can make a Loft and then choose differently shaped splines... and the loft would change it's shape based on which spline you picked. AKK! Here's a quote out of the Max manual:
Loft objects are two-dimensional shapes extruded along a third axis. You create loft objects from two or more existing spline objects. One of these splines serves the path. The remaining splines serve as cross-sections, or shapes, of the loft object. As you arrange shapes along the path, 3ds max generates a surface between the shapes.
You create shape objects to serve as a path for any number of cross-section shapes. The path becomes the framework that holds the cross sections forming your object. If you designate only one shape on the path, 3ds max assumes an identical shape is located at each end of the path. The surface is then generated between the shapes.
There... that's much better than how I explained it! :D
Marty_McFly Thanks for your speedy response, I have seen what you described there in action (the guys at work use Max on PCs) and it does seem the logical answer, but I don't think that's possible in Lightwave (at least not to my knowledge) - maybe there's another way? - I've tried for 7 attempts throughout the course of the day, and it's beating me!!

Marty_McFly: i totally agree... newbies dont worry if your models suck... we have all been there, i still think my models suck even though i've been here for ages... but just keep trying, think of an idea (i normally started with something simple) and try to make it look UNREAL, instead of trying something that is complicated and making it not look too good...

Hey everybody,
Been way too busy the last few weeks to model anything, but this week I finally got some time. And since most days I work in a cabinetmaker's woodshop, this is a perfect topic!
This model took me three tries before I came in JUST under 60 minutes.
I even took a shot at compositing it into a pic of the woodshop where I work, but I know I need a LOT of practice with lighting/texturing before that will look very good...
Lots of fantastic models so far. Keep it up!

Thanks for the kinds words, but i didn't have time to finish the jaggy edge of the object (moreso no idea how to do it quickly, hope the modo forum pros will help me a bit), and i had to do some planning and make a few retries.
the key to making the hammer edge is finding a primitive pattern which will make it simple to model.
the pattern is a radial with 8 sides, you can achieve the wavy pattern with an additional cut, either make a 8sided disc, smooth shift it twice and size the segments a bit (size on origin) to fit the general form, then cut a side work on it and clone it around center (7 copies, 45 degrees).
or, my suggestion, make a 16 side disc, smooth-shift the ngon on the top twice like before (and size it to fit the pattern), now each of the 8 sides is 3x2 polygon, the wavy pattern (near the tip edge) can be done by pulling the middle point towards the tip. you'll want to pull the other middle points into the center as well.
see the image on my site http://people.freenet.de/matzager/wip/q_hammeredge.png
now those edges get bevelled, since we don't have edges on lightwave, let's do a cheap walkaround, throw one of the 8 sides to another layer, run bandsaw to put cuts near each of those edges (basically 4 cuts). viola you get the effect.
hope i was helpful, contact me on efnet #lightwavers anytime you want :)

A multitool from me, this one took me a full hour to model. Texturing and lightning were quick (I did learn something while rendering for 3 weeks :) ). Used 3dmax 7 to model it and rendered it in vray (about 5 mins).
I like quite a few models: Smallpiece`s and Renz`s wrenches, Subcrocodile`s air riveting tool (althought maybe not valid), Rookie`s pump and Otacons wrench, simple but pretty. Quite some nice models from Fastrack of course, the measuring tape and stapler are my favorite ones. And quite a few others I can`t remember right now..
King Colin: i`ve been rendering all of my work for my portfolio.. with GI at print resolution (ouch huh? ).
B3ta: now you got me thinking, i`ll try to elaborate on the hammer in my next post.. By the way, can you use splines at all in lightwave? I would use that, but I`m sure it can also be done with box modeling.

I had a go with the hammer, tried with splines in the beggining but the result sucked. Then I tried some box modeling, you can see 2 versions in the picture, in the one on the right I tried to keep the polys quad but the result isn`t that good. I did get the basic shape though. I started with one side, then cloned and rotated it 7 times. I used an 8 sided ngon to align and weld the vertices correctly. Finally, I gave each side it`s own smoothing group before smoothing.

Hello all,
I've been lurking in the Speed Modelling forum for quite a while. Nothing else feels as good as to see high quality artwork produced by you guys under such a short time limit. To be honest, most of the artwork here could have taken me weeks (or months) to complete.

Thanks everyone for your help on the hammer model, some clever suggestions here. Nicktg - yes Lightwave does have splines, but I'm afraid I'm not too good with them yet. I can't believe I didn't think to use a boolean subtraction - I'm going to try and make the model tonight when I get home from work, if I get time, thanks again. :)
Smallpiece - very very nice!
Hi b3ta
For what it's worth I'd start with primitives and Poly's. I use Booleans as a last resort but I am a Max user, I even approach power Booleans with caution.
Hope this image helps.

Hi all,
here's my entry. The paintbrush was modelled as a simple line/rectangle loft and a shape deformation applied and a few renderable splines as extra brush hair. The texture is a scanned image of a paintbrush slapped onto the top of the model (therefore the texturestretching on the sides), lighting just one spot from the top, one from the side.
Modelling: 25 mins, 3dsMax 4.2
Texture & Lights: 10 mins

Hey I just have one question for all of you guys. since this is a ''modeling challenge'', what are the judges exactly looking for as a model? since texturing and rendering are not necessarily part of the 1hour total that is allowed, I believe we should concentrate more on displaying a wireframe image that really shows the quality of the model instead of mind blowing renders and after effects. I think what I saw until now ( this doesn't apply to everyone, there are many many beautiful models out there ) is relatively simple models that are visually enhanced by rendering methods that have nothing to do with modeling itself. As a noob I came here without knowledge of how things worked and was somewhat surprised. Could anyone enlighten me on that matter? Anyway, I just wanted to start a discussion and get this idea off my mind.

17-05-2005, 11:17 PM
well, you don't have to render you model with textures and effects, and other stuff, but don't you like to see your model really finished?
That's why the texturing an lighting time doesn't count. It's on you...
And about the models that are more simple - this forums helps people to get better and better, so I think we shouldn't judge them only because they did something simple and still godd looking.
Ilkejav mk5

okay, I might have explained myself a little bit wrong... I'm not blaming anybody here, and the less experienced people are doing good jobs. but I was merely mentioning that somtimes, all that meshsmooth can feel like the easy way out...
I personally don't think there is any point in modelling an object if you are not going to actually use it in a finished scene. Waste of a good model.
The judges will know if a model has been created with the time used economically and I don't think they will be swayed by "mind blowing renders."
They will study the technique from their unbiased viewpoint and considerable experience and skill. I'm sure Andy K knows a bluffed model when he sees one.
Anyway, with all that postulation out of the way, here is my humble effort. I really sweated on this one and thought I wouldn't make the time limit (for modelling!)

the challenge is about modeling the judges only see the model, but as a bonus you can learn a lot of things not only for modeling, there is very kind people who share their knowledge, if the people here just came with thier models we couldnt learn about other stuff like textures, materials, renders etc. and all that make this contest a great place to live :D

hey JHB, that's a pretty darn good one! good job...
I personally don't think there is any point in modelling an object if you are not going to actually use it in a finished scene. Waste of a good model.
I never said we shouldn't have renders and textures, I also believe if you don't finish it, the effort has been wasted. But I was merely saying that sometimes, the wireframe is just a better way of seeing a model as it is and that less experienced people do not have the plugins or knowledge to render their great models and make them look as good as the rest. Just for your information, about 2 months ago, I didn,t know how the hell to use Global illumination and Mental ray... my models looked like sh*t. but that sudden leap of rendering quality can fool people sometimes... although I also think the mods will judge tha models appropriately and I have my entire confidence in their ability to rate the models as good as anyone alive on this earth...

Here is another entry, again with the metal material, I either make it too chromy, or else it looks like plastic. I can't seem to get it. I am using MentalRay and default scanline to render. Fastrak, thanks for the screenshots of your settings, I have the vray free demo but that doesn't come with any shaders.
I like the texture on Despistado's wrench. Is that done with a fancy rendering engine and shaders?

İ don't know how to use global illumination and mental ray, can u give me a few hints for getting good render scene.i wanna use it.thanks for ur help.

Ilkejav mk5 Its a valid question, and one i asked myself when I started here.
Before I posted on this site I had little to no real knowledge on how to model, setup lighting, render etc, and soon fell into the trap of having alot of half finished models and scences with now renders to show for it...
It was through this site and the people posting here, that I learnt alot about the whole 3D scene. Posting here has made me want to finish my models, not only to the end of the modeling stage but also to produce a render of reasonable quality so that I could say ' I did that'...
This site is great for aiding your modeling skills and/or technique, but also allows you to expand your working knowledge of every aspect of 3D....thats what makes it so great...
The mods know what they're doing, and can spot the great models in every scene...so personally I wouldn't worry about it....seeing all the great models and renders made me want to better myself, and I think I've improved because of it.
...just keep churning out those models... :)

Glad to see you got the time to entry into this one. Your absolutely fantastic models and scenes were missed. Very nice. Very indeed. Good job.
Do you guys creat the textures in photoshop? scan some? or use the 3dtotal cd's? or what?

Do you guys creat the textures in photoshop? scan some? or use the 3dtotal cd's? or what?
Yes! :D As well as scanning the web for textures, using digital cameras, using procedurals, multi layered materials and combinations of every method you can imagine.

Bit of everything really PKT If using scanned images I tend to mix with other textures and hand painted ones using layers, just cause my scanners not too clever....
painting your own has its advantages cause you can get exactly what you want...near enough...and as long as you do a good enough job it'll look great...
hmm I see, but I got one problem, if I made a model in once peice, like a saw... I need the blade to be metal and the shaft to be plastic. How do I make the metal metal, and the plastic plastic? I can only make one type of reflection and glossness and stuff, but metal and plastic is quite different?
Or do I just skip the problem and cut the model in 2 peices and map them individually?
Marty_McFly-3DT
18-05-2005, 01:17 AM
That's one solution... but you can also assign different Material IDs to the different parts of your model and then apply your textures that way. I'm not sure about what software you're using... but that's how I'd do it for Max anyway. :D
Yeah, I use 3d studio max 7.
But I almost just reasently started with 3d. And I must say that 3d studio is far from the smallest and easyest programs I have been using, hehe. But oh so fun. I am finnished with "collage" this summer, after that I am off to a 3d school, hopefully I will learn the program more.
Because it's not the my imagination that is limited, but my knowlage in the program.

Fastrack Thanks for the comment.
Lots of really great models this time (fancy renders, or not). I'm way down the list with my effort.
BTW: Lovin' your mastic gun holder thingy, the tape and the level. All too cool.
Great modelling technique. Where do you get all the time? I spend ALL my time at this computer (much to the dismay of Mrs JHB) and only manage half of what you are producing.
Excellent stuff

Here's a better explanation of my problems with your entry... read this and fix your entry.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified
Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

this can be anything from a screwdiver to something a lot more complex. The only stipulation is that it must not be a power tool.

Nahh... I'm not getting too serious over it... there's other people here for that. I just mean that he can fix a few problems with it (namely deleting his two posts and combining them into one image and at least apply some smoothing to the model.) and then it can be at least a properly formatted "non-qualifing" entry. :D

to expand upon the materials, this is how to apply 2 materials to a single object:
create said object, and convert it to an editable poly.
select a polygon, and in the menu to the right, scroll down until you see mat id's
the default material id should be one. type the number 2 into the set id box, and click the set id button.
now if you select different polygons they will have different material id's.
now, on to the material editor.
click on the standard button on the top right just below the sample windows.
select multi/sub-object from the menu that pops up.
wether you discard or keep the material doesnt matter at this point.
now you should have a list of material id's. the top one will be material id #1. click on the material button on the right to change the material on the polygons you kept at id #1
now, click on the "go to parent" button on the menu between the samples and the editor.you can now change material id #2.
apply the material to your object, and voila! 2 materials on one object!

I guess Fastrak is a 3d master and he can make these easily, don't competite him,if u pay attention his works they r professional that i can reach after years(maybe never i can),and he does not use all his ability cuz if he shows his skills, then this can broke the newbies' passion in 3d.so do not competite Fastrak, take him as Yoda in jedi councill lead.

Congrats to everyone, well deserved.
Andy: I was hoping you could answer the question you are looking fr when judging these models. To be honest I do not know where to improve upon. Other than more detail.

i would like to extend a congratulations to fastrak and andrew day. those two models were particularly amazing.
i must express the desire to know what the judges are looking for. the entry by mimi- no offense to you whatsoever mimi- was quite simple, whereas others, such as the one by d-russ was complex, and had a lot of detail. however, both of these models stand on the same ground being honorable mentions.
i would liek to further state that this post is by no means supposed to be offensive, nor is this meant as a complaint for not winning, but instead as reference as to how i SHOULD be modelling in the future.

read your question back to yourself - I think you will realise that you have the answer already :)
A little extra detail is very often the difference between a good model and a great one

Congrats to the winners, and to all the others who submitted nice models too!
It's a real joy to learn how stuff can be done by just looking at great models, brings many new ideas. Even If I don't get it all, e.g. fasttraks "seams tutorial": I couldn't handle it in Cinema at all (extruding edges results in weird stuff instead the wanted effect ;) )
Atm. I'm doing some stuff from older speed challenges (where I didn't participated, because I didn't knew about the site) for praxis, wonder if i should post my stuff to the other threads (just did a sofa).
When I sit in front of the computer I often have so many ideas I don't know where to start.. the speed challenges gives me a specific quest I can concentrate on. Perfect for someone like me who likes fast results and never has the patience to work for days, weeks or longer on a project. :-)

tokai
