View Full Version : speed modelling challenge - week 46 - hand tool
Andy_k-3DT
12-05-2005, 03:49 AM
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries.Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified
6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
this weeks challenge
time limit - 60 minutes
deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 18th May 2005
subject - hand tool
this can be anything from a screwdiver to something a lot more complex. The only stipulation is that it must not be a power tool.
An hour gives the experienced modellers plenty of time to produce something special whilst allowing ample time for the less experienced to create a nice entry
Andy & Black
No starter from me this week - I didn't have time so I'll try and post one later on in the week

Brodix

Oh this one could be very interesting
Easy enough for a beginer, but can be made complex for experts. So no excuses for not doing one this week

thanks henry, and no isnt vray is brazil, if i got time to find the max file i will share you, but i use a lot glossy reflection is a very nice feature of brazil dont use a low glossiness value or your render time will be high.

looks really great, even if its not an entry , Wanted to make some srews too, but didn't had the right idea how to make them quick and right (was thinking about some cylinder, putting some kind of spiral object around, adding a half sphere with some cutted out parts because of booleans... but that sounded too scary, so i didn't done it.). :hurt:

Despistado great model even if its not an entry. love the render and materials
Agamemnwnthanks man, i like you model nice one and yes you can change the color of the wire but you cannot change nothing in the model

Thanks for the suggestion. I did have a scratch map already, but I didn't turn it up enough. So I have tweaked the material, not the mesh, re-rendered and edited my post. Thanks....I think it looks better now.

12-05-2005, 05:33 PM
I know that the drill can use a better texture but I just couldn't get i right so I gave up.
Giving the entry's untill now this is going to be a fantastic week.
@Rob: I could be wrong but I believe that the challenge is about tools used in carpentry and/or DIY (DYH for some people).
Edit: changed the background of the pic and de material of the drill bit and added a close up of the drill bit.
That's all,
Jan-Jaap
JanJaap[B] I had to do a double take to see the drill bit - it's kinda camouflaged with the wood floor - shame, because your material and modelling of the bit in particular looks great!

Jan-Jaap
It's a plug-in called Ornatrix. It was free for a whlie but now it's gone commercial. You can check it out here. (http://www.ephere.com/ornatrix/) It's $149.99 for a single license.

firefly, i love the lawn mower, very cool idea.
Adamos, that plane looks great, i love how you modelled it as though you were actually building one.
anyhow, heres my first post, a dremel tool. i attempted this 3 times in order to finish it, and i still didnt get to model the battery pack... :wall:
but it took me 57 minutes to model, and about 20 minutes to texture, in 3d studio max 6.0 anyone got any suggestions on how to make that ring on top knurled? (means the diamond shaped texture they use to make grip on metal)

Hey, panki... I've noticed tha you are asking this Z-Brush thing about 2 weeks, and I really think someone answered it before, but anyway...in my oppinion, it's a modelling software, isn't it? So...
Anyway, my answer isn't valid until a moderator says so.

panki ZBRUSH in fact its a 2.5 modelling software its an hybrid half 2d half 3d, you can add texture too like any other software to your model, this 2.5 feature make zbrush capable of handle object with more than a trillions of polys, im not a moderator but yes you can use zbrush for modellling

Been a while, my computer has been rendering for like 3 weeks :)
Just 7 pages so far and already full of nice models..
My entry is a simple tiny screwdriver which took about 20 minutes to model texture in 3d max 7. Rendering in vray took another 2.

I've really enjoyed looking at what you guys have produced in the SMC over the weeks and decided to have a go myself. I'm very much a beginner and this is my first entry so I decided to keep it nice and simple. Before you laugh at my modelling time for what is two simple objects (I know some of you guys could model this in two minutes!) please bear in mind I am learning this software (3ds Max 7) as I go along...

Hi!
Nice modles everyone! :)
fastrak love your textures on your Measuring Tape and the modeling is very clear too! =]
But everyone is getting well already!
Here I go with my first this week! Hope it fits in the category - Hand Tool! I would say that it is used with hands only I don't know if it could be called a tool! :D
Hope you'll like it anyway!
PS: I did some effects on the image with PhotoImact XL.

My gosh you guys are quick! Alot of excellant entries thus far. I wish I had more time. I've got one in the works, but it's killing me. Haven't been able to get it done without screwing up the mesh in the time allowed. So, I'm on third attempt with revisions. Maybe this one will make it. (just not ready to give up on it yet)

Good job. Very clean. Looks like you had the time to add more detail, like maybe a logo or manufacturer. Sometimes they have more than one bubble level on it for vertical and horizontil leveling. Good Job all the same.

Even if it's deemed not a valid entry... it's a great model Fastrak! I've been trying to figure out how to get a metal material that didn't have 100% reflections like most chrome renders. Nice job everyone, here is my entry for the week.
Question, I used a boolean to put the bolts on the top of my model, and I got all those triangles. Once you get them, is there a way to get your mesh back to the square polygons relatively easy?

Fastrak: Thanks for the metal tut... although unfortunately I can't use VRay for crap. I've been tryin out Mental Ray with mixed feelings and results. As for Lux's entry... he did attack it... it's just that when you attach more than one thing it shows up like that. Oh... and the text file IS his wireframe. PovRay is a text based modelling system. This week's subject - hand tool is a vast one.. I see so many varieties of tools. Good job every one.
I made this model in Maya mostly using primitives and using Booleans. Luckily this time i didn't have any real problem with them. I created a blueprint for the model in CorelDraw and the texture in Photoshop.

Also i took literally hours and hours on the scene because i tried learning hdri and all that stuff with the model.
unfortunately it didn't look very good with it for some reason but anyway I learned a lot doing it. Thanks for the mods for this amazing learning tool and to all the participants(spelling?) for those great wireframes that help a lot.

AWW MARTY YOU STOLE MY IDEA! thats cool though. good job on your pen, mine is still in the rendering process. i dunno if it counts because it could be office equipment, but its a tool i use A LOT.
hey subcrocodile, you should try chamfering the edges of your tool to avoid the too-smooth look. where the indentations are in the tool, grab the edges and chamfer them a tiny bit, (like .01 or so) and see how that affects the outcome. that should give your tool a bit more definition.

nice model, only the reflection in the render is very dark. Maybe using some global reflection could help to give the final touch?
anyway.. here is my 3rd model for this week (and the last one, i must stop with this. :haha: ). Why? Because the first one was just a 'quicky' and the second one.. well... it was weird. I hope this qualifies as hand tool (its simply a too width spectrum of possibilities).

Rashika: Your pen looks great. Good materials on it... the main difference is mine actually is a "hand tool". ;)
Firefly: That model is just mean. But it's pretty useful when you want to take candy from a baby! :haha:

huh? It's not office scissors. ;P
You also can use scissors for cutting other things than paper. E.g. I use it for cutting wires or remove the plastic from them... or cutting other things which are around in workshops, even as screwdriver. And this is not a joke, I have exactly this scissors in my computer toolbox together with scredrivers, cables, screws, etc.
But maybe next time I could make it rusty and dirty and add some oil spots around. :-)
tokai thanks for your comment, all three of your models this weekaare looking great, the material on your scissors is very realistic - nice.

Yeah... I'll admit that some people are just getting mislead by the word "hand" thinking that as long as you use your hand to operate it... it's a valid entry. It's just a simple case of people not reading the rules before entering. They just see the subject and start letting thier imaginations going wild. That's not a bad thing... although it is when you're not following the brief. Put it this way... if they were competing for a job from a client... they just failed. Therefore... if they thought they were competing in this week's challenge... heh... well... you know.
It's simple people... read the rules... then let your imagination go wild. :D

very sorry about the pen then. i thought by office tools he meant things like a hole punch, staplers, staple removers and such. i figured by hand tool you could make things that apply to what we do. would a mouse be considered an office tool? how about a tablet? i use both as tools of my trade. as well as i use a pen. i made the mistake once with making a power tool and went back and read the rules very carefully and didnt see anything there that says only tools used in manual labor such as plumbing and carpentry. if that were said then i would not have made this pen.
i dont understand what the concept of competing for a job from a client... when would you build a model for a client? in advertisement? or would you be inventing a tool? or would someone come up to you and say "make me a pipe wrench" and you would model it? if so, why would they need to see a 3d render of a pipe wrench when they could just go to the store?

Nice models everyone - just wanted to ask if i can model a garden trigger nozzle (that thing you press and it lets out water for watering gardens - not very good with english :\ )
It's not powered by energy, and most things used in gardening are tools as far as i know.
it's not that i'm trying to be original, but it just really caught my attention when i went to the basement and seemed really interesting.
Rashika : i think it's not the challenge itself which is like a client job (or at least, i sure hope we'll never compete with 20 other ppl on an hour wage ^^) but rather it's the timelimit of the model which gives reasonable time to make a good model yet enough stress to keep you on your toes.
for example, say you're a modeller in an animation studio, and they're making a commercial reel, they'll need a set, character and props, so for this example they'll expect you to model each prop in an hour, so they'll finish it in time for the client.
the idea we can choose what tool to model adds a fun factor, and variety. the render is a bonus and as far as i know this challange is based around the modelling.
(a community project based on reference can be great to improve workflow, but since we use different applications, i would say it doesn't fit here)
btw, i know i talk a lot, but i gotta say i really liked your pen, too bad the rules weren't clear enough :\

Rashika I agree with you. I think a tool have a very wide range. I think they ill be valid. It just depends what kind of material you are working with. In my case pizza, and yours paper. I'll just let the Mods be the judge, and shut up now.

hey the gimp, im sorry about not commenting on yours, i had thought about it, but it gets lost when you are looking through all the pictures even on one page. when i started here, someone told me that i should try to make the composition more appealing by rendering in a more extreme/more effective (cant remember exactly the word) angle.
as for the models themselves, i reccomend getting some pctures of the item you want to create for reference and planning out your work ahead of time so you can make the most out of the hour. pick a subject that has a moderate amount of details on it and practice making a model over and over again until you can get the details in there.
i've noticed that a lot of people make comments on the render and materials, but dont worry if you cant make a convincing texture. try to rely on the modelling because in the end, thats what the admins are looking at.
speaking of admins, when you get the time, could you post some general guidlelines that you follow when judging? what i mean is, what do you look for in a good model? mesh simplicity/cleanliness? attention to detail? ability to create something realistic? creativity? i would like to know so that i can better prepare myself for the models.

oh, one more thing. i asked a question about how to make a knurled texture (the diamond pattern on metal used for grip) and i found a pretty easy and convincing way to do it. (in max, i've never used maya or lightwave or c4d)
create a bump map out of the procedural "tiles" texture.
change the tile/grout color to black and white
rotate the texture 45 degrees
adjust the bump height to desired intensity.
it doesnt give you the bumpy edges but im sure with a complex mesh and applying it to a displacement map it should.
I updated my post and included a wireframe. But: since I'm modeling with povrays scripting language there actualy is no wireframe created during the modeling process. This time I used KPovModeler for visualizing my pov-script. But importing and cleaning the code took almost as long as modeling itself. Do the rules of this board imply that this has to be done every time or could including the pov-script to the post be also seen as providing a wireframe in a "less visual form"?

Hey thegimp
legit. request. Comments and critiques are always helpful, not only to you but to others as well. Sometimes is frustrating to work hard on something, and feel like it goes unnoticed. (and your not being a "girl" about it either :) )
If I may: your tape measure looked real good. Only comment would be the front metal thing that attaches to the tape itself. It should be more of a straight angle then curved. This would keep it from slipping when trying to measure. Otherwise its a solid job. On the plunger, the shape looks a little off somehow..maybe too much of a bulge..also, you included the other items in your scene with the plunger, because of that, they will be judged with your main item. It is ok to include a "scene" but make note if is part of the entry of not. (btw, nice avatar)
Good job!

hmmmm....not sure either...you did an excellant job on it. I think there are many "flavors" of this type of tool, so it's tough to tell when I can only compare it to my own. I think the handle metal could be just a touch thicker. Maybe a little more "bulk" from a perception point of view. I noticed that your "jaws" have a curve throughout, whereas mine have a few teeth on a flat plane at the tip, then the curve...gives it a dual purpose....just like you would find on a regular set of pliers. Just an opinion.
Ilkejav mk5
16-05-2005, 03:54 AM
all right, well thanx for the crit, I think I found the problem... my vise doesn't have the flat part at the tip but the thing that was bothering me was the attachment between the lower jaw and the lower handle, i think it's a little thin and the bolt doesn't fit well...
