View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr. 24 - Star Wars!
Michael
29-05-2005, 05:35 PM
The Star Wars have taken rule of the whole universe, so I think we should make some art of it as well... The quality of what we've seen there is setting a new level of visual effects, so it simply owns every artistic mind in the whole world I think :D Enough of the babbling, though :p...
This week's topic will be to paint a Jedi Knight or a Sith. Now - it can be ANY creature that you can imagine ,as long as it can wield a lightsaber - human, humanoid, lizard ( even rats are allowed )... Let your imagination flow. Also - it is vital that you accent which side of the Force is the character - Dark or Light. Make it a background, a pose - whatever you can think of.
Write the time of making under each entry, be creative and have FUN!
Deadline - Wednesday the next week 12:00 PM GMT +01:00.
RULES (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=24525)

Oh ..this is one of my all time favorite´s subject !!!
(dunno why i havent drawn much SW stuff before?)
Here´s my first contribution to the contest.
propably gonna clean it up and colorize it, but due to lack of time i´ll post this and see how far i get with the rest.
More than an hours work spent. (Rough scetch -> Refined scetch)
An old Jedi (on the light side =)

David - NICE! Funny :D
Cid - cool guy, ink him and colour/shade him
Valentin - ummm... Jedi Knight? Read the first post everytime before you post anything yourself :p ;) It's cool, but not very into the subject :)
David Ciprian
30-05-2005, 01:03 PM
Thanks. Glad You like it :)
valentin: Please keep any comments in English
cid: Nice concept. Though the mask/helmet doesnt seem to go well with the rest of the character
David: Nice render! Could you share with us you material setting plz!! (oups...wrong section!Lol)...
Cool topic :D
since I am a star wars nerd.
Good Luck you guys and girls

We´ll, the helmet´s propably staying on.
Tho i might modify it to more fit the "image" of a jedi.
He´s an old Jedi far from his birthplace and environment, the air he breaths doesnt smell the same and doesnt feel the same in his "lungs", the air is to dry for him in the most systems, causing him to dry out from the inside.
Yet there is still a strong force in the old Pad'da, and he will never leave the side of the Jedi´s ...
Here´s what his head looks like under the helmet =)
lol, Padda, kult namn svenne ;)
Cool drawing

hehe ..fitting aint it =)
Have a little question for the 3Dtotal Staff,
the timeframe of making an image, is it the actual time spent working on the image, or the total time for completion that counts ?
Can i for example pick the drawing up in 3 days and complete it, with a total of 4 hours spent working on it ?
Is it the 3 days or the 4 hours that counts ?
Im asking cuz i have to go to work =/
Good topic
I'm off to the theatre today to see E3 for the second time.
Time to have a closer look at the details this time.
Perhaps I'll return with some inspiration
Keep em coming people!

OK, here's my contribution to the challenge. Playing a bit with lighting, shading... and some rock rendering... so much to learn... :(
To make things fair -my work is not votable, made it just for fun. AND IT WAS!

Hehe, this one will be great!
David Ciprian : Funny one! Nice light on the saber...
cid228 : It´s great - keep going.
Michael - 3DT : Nice! You could add more red light from the saber on the shadows´ area...
And here´s mine. It´s a quick sketch, trying to convey some ancient , painterly looking mood. Photoshop CS, 35 minutes...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/pentagramma/jedi1.jpg
Michael_3DT: Glad you could contribute. You should contribute more often as starters ;)! Nice anyway! He's in the dark side isn't he?
Pentagramma: Great action pose! The subject seems to lose its importance a little due to the large textured but empty background.
Here's my contribution...2.5 hours in Painter and PSD.
Ok the logo is a bit jagged that's because I could find a proper decent high resolution one on the net, Lol.

Its been a while since i've posted here but thought i'd have a crack at doing a pic this week.....
There are some great designs so far peeps, good job everyone..
Well this is mine...spent 6 hours on this, most of which was on the design, but this is more like w.i.p, cause i plan on doing a more realistic version, if i have time...fingers crossed..
info: Name, Chalice Merhler...She is very much on the side of light, but has an unorthadox way of doing things, and a certain mystery about her that could lead anyone that dosen't know her well, to believe shes with the dark side...

nice contest you've got running here ;-)
but got a little n00b question here, hope its ok...
this whole sketch concept how much does that involve pencils/ink crayons etc.? or said in another way is it ok to draw with pencil -> scan it -> and then color it in photoshop?
about the "theme"... how strict are the rules here? I'm talking about the "...as long as it can wield a lightsaber..." line... is it ok to interpret a little bit, maybe to a helper to a jedi? have a great idea, but not sure it goes under the categori Jedi... hope that some of it was understandable...
Michael
02-06-2005, 12:18 AM
For the media and other questions - please refer to the separate thread under Speedpainting Challenges subforum :p
Theme - it was meant to be a Jedi for a reason, that will be revealed in the next challenge :D, so I would recommend you paint him. You can also paint two entries... :)

Michael-3DT yeah ok understood ;-) I'll try to get my idea on paper soon...

WIP
sketched this in about 1h... it's late so everything is far from finished. (= just wanted too share and you to know i'm participating... (= good night all... and very nice entries so far...
Commodor: Jagged? I think it's the right word, isn't it?...
Cid228: Another great entry!
Small Piece: Looking good! Awaiting to see the realistic version...mmmhh
Retard: Nice entry, colors??

CHK
of course..
still WIP and all lines aren't clean and stuff like that...
aren't sure if I will use the colors I have now... I know almost nothing about starwars... so this is hard for me...
her name will be Darth Barbro

pentagramma, Chk - thanks for comments. It's "she" and she's a sith, indeed.
Chk - I can't contribute more often, unfortunatelly, due to a lack of time :( But I'll try :)

Retard. I kinda liked your original sketch. The part of her head that you turned into hair looks kinda good as the shape of an alien head. I imagine her as greyish and bald, yet in the she's still very feminine. Just an option to play around with. Experiment.

Michael -- I'd completely skipped over your painting before - just now noticed it - very, very nice (the background especially). And am I the only one who can't paint lightsabers straight?
Anyhow, here's my entry, or WIP if I do more work on it, which I hope to -- quick sketch - I liked the way the pose looked and whatnot, so I just added elements from there. (Trying to learn color theory the hard way, by sight - why must I see in colors?!! - ugh.) Any C&C welcome. Just glad to get something larger done in awhile. Oh, and it's not a Sith...
edit: almost forgot -- took about 2 - 2.5 hr
Looks quite gigantic!... At this size (gigantic saber) the Dark side won't last long, ;)!

MESSAGE DELETED BY MICHAEL-3DT
Edit Michael-3DT - you've just insulted a valued member of challenges. And your accusations were really childish. Don't do that again or you will be banned from this forums. Since you've read the rules of this forums - remember, one of the points was "not to post any insultive comments of any kind". If you don't agree with it - don't join the forums.

Maybe you should pay more close attention to your Thomas Brackett quote, yourself, dimwit.

There is still some time left for this. Any more entries? :)

cool topic....till now great entries...hope I will also draw something for this week challenge!!!
LittleFish: cool stuff :D Reminds me of a wookie... dunno if that's what you're going for a not, but the shaggy, brown-haired look reminds me of chewbacca. One crit i have is just to fix the eyeballs. Maybe the white is too sharp or something... just seems like they stand out a little strong in comparison with the rest of the work. Good job :D

Hi!!! Well I know I don't post very often (and my english is bad) but you should know that usually Jedi knight's sabers are from "cold" colors (green, blue, etc ...) and Sith's are red, unless they took their saber from a killed Jedi (Just like Grievous'). I heard Mace Windu's saber is purple because he is so powerful he' one step from Dark Side.

OK, the DEADLINE ... is here, so all the posts above this one COUNT and are VOTABLE, exept mine, that was only for fun :D
VOTE! :D
Caranarq - I think we all know it :)... the purpose of this challenge was to paint either a Sith or a Jedi, so I think all the colours are chosen on purpose :)
I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the info Caranarq lol! So who's up for the thumbnail?? ....Alright I'll do it.....

hi everyone
my vote :
cid 228 (i vote for the first one) - I like the light of the saber
CHk - great as always - you're best fan lol
and david (well done too)
just a question for mickael : the idea of making more than one drawing by person is not at all a problem for me; but as in every challenge you vote for only one drawing by person; so is it possible for the next challenges that guys decide which of their draws they want to compete with.
I hope you understand what i mean :hmm:......
anyway good luck guys!
