Oops Forgot one...
BetaSoft;
What is your entry? The harbour included or not?
It would have been a good idea to keep the wire-frame more legible.
Black
Back with a entry, after my "Star Wars" break ;)
Wanted to made a few more models this week, but seriously.. this is a lot more harder than I expected. I needed 3 runs to get one model done in time and in a presentable status (and its still far away from complete).
Hope the wireframe shot is a bit clear at least how I made the model. The body is basically Loftnurbs and a Extrudenurbs for the middle part. The sail was 'modelled' with Clothenurbs (wireframe shows the sail object before applying any forces). Ropes are basically simple 2 point splines.
regards,
tokai
Bah, I did a similar project once and it took me at least a week, not to mention it looks far worse... Well at least I can say it's animated...
Good job on it by the way.

Ok, well here is my seriously pitiful excuse for an entry.
What happened was- i finished doing everything by 9.20 and started the render. Well, the render was about 80% done by 10.15, thought it would be finished by at the most 10.30 (in mental ray) and it all crashed and closed down.
Well, there wasnt much point re-rendering (i did try, but it was being extra slow) so i just took a couple of print screens :wall: :wall: :cry:
It was lookin all pretty with the clouds and stuff (they were prob the problem)
OK, complaining over
Again- everything done in 60 mins
Software- Silo (for the first time :dance: ) and Maya.
hope, its not too late either!

Melania: That is awesome. I didn't enter this week... lack of knowledge in the subject was one factor. Now... I can just shoot myself for not thinking about making a Lego boat... especially considering my past entries! :wall: You did a great job and I'm completely jealous! (But in a good way!)

I3ear17: Next Time if you are looking for referance material it is called a higgins boat. I also noticed no one took on the higgins boat. :dunno: o well this weekend I will be a 3d Machine Known soley as... ... ... 3d Machine or FireFly ,or Wes. :roll: :dance:

@subcrocodile: thanks, I make it with box modeling method. some cut, extrude and scale. just it. but I don't attend to details.
@Rooky: thank you friend.
WebWolf, good work!

Thank you, Black, for that big compliment! It's nice to hear something like that.
Mohamad, thank you too!

Black no i didn't. just 3dsmax7. the lower part of the boat is actually modelled from a single box. i cut it up a bit to allow different colours to fake small parts. (not enough time for each piece separately). i wish i had more time to work on it better. i could send you the .max file if you think it's necessary though. just let me know
Marty_McFly i'm flattered for the kind words. thank you. i'm a little surprised myself that nobody thought of it

Melanie;
I am an LDraw Rookie yet, but it is hard to pass by noticing the similarity of the stubs and the logo on them when I compair it to the result I got from it's exporter.
I am going to let it pass me by simply because had you wanted to model it only in max, or most other softwares it could be done. It shall be Andy's decision for the judging from here on. Not mine
Shall you remodel a model based on softwares such though you should go through tthe extra trouble of stating it.
Marty;
When you come to think of their product range... I can't think of a week that you couldn't have done something with LEGO's.
Hmm wait.. maybe woooden toyz... not sure of the rest.
WebWolf;
Lol.. no compliments on my part.. stating facts :)
BTW; Good luck on the Cathedral! I have a project of modeling out the great athedral of Leuven. From the grvur plans from it's making a few centuries old.. and MAN is it a challange.

black, being more experienced in ldraw i think that that model was made in 3ds max. only because the wireframe doesn't look quite like an ldraw wireframe after it's been imported into 3ds max. i could be wrong however

I accept it.
All I can do is wish Melanie the best of luck with the entries journey in the judging.

Black, acutally the cathedral won't be updated anymore (though it's a bit farther grown by now than you can see in my thread), because I modeled it for my big animation project and thatfore it is good enough. Also the fat man and the poor slave. They were the main characters in my 4.5 minutes short movie. Hopefully my webspace will be activated soon so I can upload the animation incl making-of and more information. The story is adapted from Edgar Allen Poe's short story "A Predicament" (in German "In schlimmer Klemme - Die Sense der Zeit"). I called it "The Scythe of time".

I really don't think I get this, lol.

You ...
With the first annoying post of the week.

17-06-2005, 08:56 PM
I can only guess why it's annoying: have you perhaps not decided on a winner yet? I have, however, a good reason for asking the question: I was told by two seperate users on two seperate occasions that the winners are announced in a post near the end of the thread, and I cannot seem to find such a post.
I wasn't trying to annoy you; you didn't have to be nasty. :(

By thouroughly searching the forums, I have discovered an important piece of information.
the results are posted at the end of challenges that way everyone who has participated will be notified when the winners are announced.
Judging is usually (approximately) 1 week after the deadline depending on the amount of time I have available :)
Andy
I do not think then that I have done anything wrong in asking, as this information is not given to the participants.

Don't be so annoyed, Black didn't mean to insult you. It's just so that the moderators are quite busy and post the winners some days or weeks after the dead line. Just be patient, the winners will be published soon.

OMFG smack monkey! you rule yo.
Here's my entry. A BIG shout out to Thinsoldier, thank you very much for the awsome refference. My textures looked like crap so I decided to make the main image a clay render.
Good luck all!
Oh yeah
Max7 the full hour for modeling
an hour for textures and half an hour rendering
10 minutes post in photoshop

I wasn't annoyed!
'Upset' would be a more appropriate word. :(
It doesn't matter now...I wasn't being impatient - it's not like I think I've won or anything! I just got the impression I was missing something. This was mainly due to the fact that the Star Wars challenge hasn't been judged yet, but I've since assumed that this is because it was for 2 weeks.

I have come across a link that seems to have some impressive free models donated to the internet community: http://davisworks.net/helmut/
Unfortunately though some of the ship models presented are a bit TOO simiallar to some entries for this week...
Better late than never;
if you guys have any reason to presume you are suspected to have used one of them; it would be a good contact the Andy and try to come clean.
At this point I would strongly recommend you hold on to your files with a creation date from before the deadline in order to prove things easier.

Black, just to be sure that there aren't misunderstandings. On that certain page you linked there are exactly four ships and one submarine offered, right? I suppose, you allude to the Viking Ships here?

vijay, welcome to the Speed Modeling Contest. Unfortunately you are about 2 weeks too late for this topic! This week's topic is SpeedModelingChallenge week 53 - topic "puzzle".
The challenge "boat" is over since 15th June 2005 and will be judged soon.

I'd first like to say that it's an honor and a privilege to be judging these challenges. A very big Thanks to Andy for giving me this opportunity. I'm going to try and do my best to be fair and honest in my decisions. I hope to do these challenges justice and I'm hoping to try and help bring things back on track.
There were many great entries in this weeks challenge. Some entries that I thought should have made it in were discounted for unfortunate things such as too dark of a render. The unwritten rule stands as "If we can't see it, we can't judge it." It's a bit of common sense that gets missed sometimes. Atmosphere is good... but not at the expense of your model. A few others were discounted because of a poor representation of the wireframe. Again, a clear unaltered and unsmoothed wireframe screenshot is always best. In other words, don't remove the viewport background of the wireframe and composite it over your image. If you put a white wireframe over a reflective shiny surface like water, it makes the wireframe hard to judge. There were also unfortunately a few others that were discounted because the image size was too big. I really hated to see that happen, but I know that mistakes do happen. 800 * 600 or 600 * 800... no bigger, but guys... since you're getting 800 * 600 please try to use it all. Now on to the results. :)

Hello ppl, Congratulation to all that get listed, and congratulation all, nice entryes.
Woohoo Marty you are the best judge ever and a fine choice for a Moderator!
Not saying I don't agree, but I think you would have won no matter who judged the challenge. It is truly a great model.
Same goes with you, Rooky
Congrats to all who made the list.

;)))))))) Yeah!! I have been recognised as a winner again :D my 2nd so far! :) Thank you all for compliments! I really appreciate it! Congrats to all runners up and honorable mentions and Smack Monkey!! Really great model you had there Smack! ;) And of course a big applausse for Marty!! It seems like all is going to be as earlier again!! Cheers! :)
Whoah. This got me by surprise. Almost forgot that i entered this comp. And i got honorably mentioned :) . There is a lot of very nice models there.
Other than that. It seems that theese challenges are realy spreading poor moderators too thin. Maybe it would be better if they were opened for a week but every other week or maybe every month, just to slow things down.
Or there could also be Speed judging competition, just to se who is the fastest judge :D .
