View Full Version : speed modelling challenge - week 50 - boat
Andy_k-3DT
09-06-2005, 03:50 AM
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries.Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified
6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
this weeks challenge
time limit - 60 minutes
deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 15th June 2005
subject - Boat
From a rowing boat to an ocean liner it's up to you
Andy
as usual, here's my image which immediately disqualifies me :)
Please do not post images like this - read the rules if you are in any doubt.

Does a rubber dingy count? hehe.
i really hope i have time to do something this week, stupid exams and revision - ah well
Boat? You make a boat topic? I wanted to take a week off and you put here a boat topic? What will be next? An airplane topic? Or a helicopter? Maybe a tank! You want to kill me? :D
Now seriously: GREAT TOPIC, thank you for it. I will really enjoy this one :)
And Andy, that is really a nice ship :)
Andy_k-3DT
09-06-2005, 04:20 AM
yep 3Djunior - a rubber dinghy is fine
Japo, it's a boat not a ship - more precisely a fishing boat. The next town along the coast from us is a working fishing port (on a small scale) so there is loads of reference material for me.
This boat model was originally used for a 3D World tutorial I wrote a while back.

Irony at it's best! I'm sittin' here, shaking my head with a big grin. Boat. It just so happens, I will not be doing much on this one, because, I'm going on vacation as of Saturday. A whole week! No phone, no tv, no computer...oh my gosh. And the ironic part is, I'm going on a cruise. A steamboat cruise down the Mississippi River. 7 days. Here is a boat challenge, and I'm gonna be on one for a while. Now that is irony. lol

take hundreds of pictures - Mississippi steamboats are superb subjects as a modelling project. The more research you do the better model you get at the end off it.
A week's hoiliday doesn't mean that you can forget 3D altogether :)
Have a great time

Thanks Andy,
Believe me, I will take the pics. Got my Minolta A1 ready to go. Just so happens it is the Mississippi Queen, big one. But what do ya mean I can't forget 3d? How can I? Everytime I looK at something anymore, all I see is verts, polys and meshsmooth. lol
(may have to try and squeeze one in before I go)
Bet ya can't squeeze the Mississippi Queen in :)

Ok.. so are the bets on for 'the first to model a TItanic'?
Rashika;
READ... as often as you can and as much as you can.
EVERYTHING I know about MAYA other than things I sort of discovered on my own came from tutorials from the net and from it's manual it comes with.
This goes the same for every other software I have used until today.
And also feel free to call/mail the company of your software you use. They are always helpful and it gives them good feedback to know what is more a problem.
In practice, you don't only pay for the software when you buy it!

Hello ppl
I stay to see the new topic, in my sadnes, cause no entry in that great 2 week starwars chalenge :hurt:
And when I see boat, i say hey, is nice to tray to learn nurbs modelink, I plan to start learnig about 1 week but no time. So I go in max and I draw the boat base verry cute and without atention, and when i see is cute in a scary way :D, I say hmm lets try to model that, hmm and that, after that I watch my time, and say if I do that so quik, why not take the full hour and add stuff to it.
And playing around I come with that
About modeling for people more noob than me, (don't think ther are here)
-the base boat is made with 3 nurbs line and add surface, after that to give it volume and bouth sides, I add a shell modifier to it. That why the mesh is so dens  because is nurbs, and beacause is my first nurbs play, without a tutorial, only wath I remeber form reading quik some tutorials in the past.
And why 3 lines, because I not plat to make it an entry at that moment, so only I wish to play 5 minutes to see if I could manage to make the shape off the boat with nurbs. (I think is faster then poly modeling(my love) or spline)
After I think to pop in the contest, I convert it to editable poly, and make some polly extrusion to make it look like borken wood.(more like a nuts shell  )
(I EXPLAIN THE NAME OF THE OBJECT BECAUSE IS TO LATE NO TO LOOK FOR THE NAME IN DICTIONARRY)
-The seets are a box whit some extrusion to give it some dents and chanfer the edgeges.
-the rescue ring, is tolus whit some edges selected and extruded and after that chanfered, to give the bump look
-The fish tools, is some splines with diferent size.
-the tools for moving the boat, are draw with splines, after that extruded to give them volum, and transform to edit poly, and some poly extrusion to give dents.
-the think to hold (moving boat tools) just splines.
Sorry for my bad english and for my lazzy to find the words in dictionarry, bat is to late now and I'm not feel quite ok, hope U undestern the name and all things
And hope U find that boat funny in a scarry way ;P
Modeling time: 60min
Software: 3ds Max 6
All objects in scene are modeled in the time limit.

Andy, outta curiosity, what is it exactly that you do?
I'm a freelancer. A lot of my work (about 75%) is atchitectural and interior design modelling. Working from plans, photographs or just concept sketches I produce models and finished images for clients some of whom are small local firms and other which are big multi national ones. The other 25% is the fun stuff like producing adverting and cover artwork for games and illustrations for books
I also write for 3D World and Computer Arts as well as trying to find time to keep an eye on you lot :)

Cool topic Mr. Andy! I'm new to this and quite looking forward to joining in the fun!
I think I understand all aspects of the challenge now. Do you take cultural differences into account? Where I live, boats look like primitive spheres or cubes. They just sorta bob around on the water!

Andy, I dont want to enter a ship or plane by mistake on this one. Does a canoe count as a boat? I'd think it does, but then I'm no expert. Here's by idea (pictured)

yes a canoe is a boat, basically if it floats on water and can be used for transport either of people or cargo then it qualifies.

Mr. Lemon that's fantastic! I love the textures; they make the boat look real to my untrained eye! I feel like I could reach out and grab it's thick plastic body and splash it into my bath. I am genuinly impressed!
EDIT: Can anyone help me: I am wondering how I might achieve the rendering effect used on Andy's fishing boat (the wire mesh blending in gradually). I've seen it a few times and I like the way it shows off the mesh underneath. I'm using 3dsmax; it is possible for me to create this effect?
Thanks!

09-06-2005, 05:34 PM
nice topic this week! :-)
@yousrekh:
I think andy first made a screenshot of the mesh, then rendered the editor view and made a screenshot of that too and blended both together with photoshop (or some other gfx program).
And anyway: if you present you model that way you will be DQ'ed. So don't! :-)

exactly the method Tokai described - the blending is done using layer masks.
Take a screen grab of the rendered viewpoint and in wire frame, overlay the wireframe then use a gradient on the layer mask to fade it's visibility

Thanks Andy! Thinking about it, it's obvious what you did :). I'm reasonably good at Photoshop, and I use any excuse to play around with alpha channels; I love them! I guess I just assumed there was some sort of rendering options; in the same way that there are wireframe, smooth and highlights, and so on, I thought there might be a "smooth and highlights with wire mesh" or something :).

MIght I ask...what happened to week 49? :p :p
TheOnlyAaron

Gotta figure a submarie would count...I mean, they aren't below the waves the whole time, and they are quite capable of floating and propelling on their own power.
With that in mind, I take you back to the mid-90's with SeaQuest DSV. Not sure how many of you remember this show (Brandis fans for sure though), but I used to love it...it was like Star Trek, but underwater.
I tried to get as much detail in as I could, but it's tough getting good pics of the DSV. I was also hoping to do a nice render of it underwater, but in order for it to look good, it'd probably hide a lot of the geometery in the murky fog, so I just did a simple final gather render on it.

Off topic question..(sorry in advance, but if anyone knows, its everyone here that competes)
I'm looking for book, textbook perferably, that teaches or guides someone basic modeling on 3dsmax. Other aspects are ok, but the modeling is the most important part. This will be needed for a classroom, not for me. I know many of the tutorials and help files may be better, but a textbook has been requested. Some of you may have had a 3d class or know of someone that has and may be able to suggest such a book. I would really appreciate a "speedy" response.

Fastrak 3DS Max 7 Fundamentals and Beyond Courseware is now available, I think it has a classroom attitude. I was also thinking of getting it for some of my guys.
fastrak, not quite sure about how in depth you want the book to be, but the 3ds max 7 Bible seems to cover quite a bit of modelling. It is the recommended text for the intro animation class that I help with. It's basic, but it covers a little of everything.
TheOnlyAaron
10-06-2005, 03:15 AM
Yeah, I recently got the 3DSM bible, it seems pretty informative. It covers almost any feature I can think of, including those in modeling. However it does have a drawback, it simplifies everything to a few steps or less (drawback you say?) most of the exercises are very simple to get the idea or purpose of a tool across, but it dosent really seem to explore everything to its full potential, and potentials that the programmers didn't even have in mind.
However it is a broad based book, and I love mine. I even got the cover laminated!

Hello ppl,
I find so time, so I say no more chalanges without an entry.
I was stay alot of time to model accessories and I was not able to give more detailes to the main boat so is a little wierd, but anyway at least I practice modeling
Main boat and acesories were made with box modeling, the crom stuff are splines, and the window is shaped with splines and add a surface modifier to it, and a shell modifier to give it volum and 2 sides.
The materials: Standard max material with multi-layer shader, and dent map in difuse slot to make spot color, and a fallof map in reflexion slot for main boat , the same for chair and weel but without dent in difuse slot, to keep one color, and max metal_crom standard material for the crom parts.
Lighting
1 spot light with difuse off, one sky light and Light Tracer for light efect
and default max scanlines
Sorry if Is upsed for u to read modeling tehnique for a bad model, and light and material tehnique for again a bad scene.
Tell me and I erase the text

hey, yah, i would say that 3ds max fundamentals is a great book, i have that one sitting next to me. it has some awesome advice on lighting and rendering as well as explaining entry level stuff such as sub-objects and modifiers. it has a section about modelling as well. it lacks information about splines and nurbs, and texturing.

As far as books go...i would have to agree that the two that i have are pretty simple in their explanations.. i have "3ds max 4 In depth" and "3dsmax 4 for windows". Both of those i used to just get the basics down and then teach myself along the way. They are ok.

Thanks so much billy.. appreciate it mucho! 1 more question bud :p hehe how can i add textures to only a selected area in cinema 4d? in max u just highlight and apply to the selecred area.. was wondering if there was something similar for C4D. Thanks so much dude
highlight the area you want to paint and in the selection menu click on "set selection". In the objects manager (right hand side of the screen you will see a new triangular tab and the option to name it). Now apply your material to the object and in the tag properties panel drag the selection tag or type it's name into the "selection" box.
A bit fiddly to do but set selection has many other uses so it is very versatile

hehe subcrocodile, with a little bit of modification, that could have had a good run in the shoe competition :P
lol. maybe but u know that ppl named for some kinda slippers that "sandals"
the shape of sandals always reminds the slippers and shoes, no mater for me here, but ur idea gave me to do a new one.by the way ears of a rabbit reminds me scissors, the ponytail reminds me the broom, snake reminds me cables and etc.. lol.
thanks for comments puckducker.u r right about the front is too pointy cuz of box modeling, vertexes r unified in front the boat,i dunno how to handle this handicap in box modelling.

Hey people these competitions are awesome to watch! So well i decided to join. So I decided to make a submarine and to be honest i have never modeled anything under time pressure but i am really happy with my results.
Well i was just using ranom pictures i found on google to get an idea how submarines actually look like. I didnt find any good references the best ones where ty submarine pictures.
INFO:

time spent for submarine model 54 minutes
Note: that the ice I was just playing around with to get some nice reflections and that should not be included in judging my project...

I do have a question though for you more experienced people. When I modeled this, and some other past weeks, I have used a path and birailed it - but when I render it as wireframe, it makes it look super-high poly, but when I'm modeling it, it doesn't at all. Anyone know why?
Thanks.

Here's sort of a fantasy mishmash I'm calling the Tonkiki. I got smart and did the basic form before adding the details. Managed to do some of the sail rigging. Ran out of time to do the anchors or lanterns.
Red Meshes are lofts through multiple curves.
Blue Meshes are sweeps along two rails.
Greens are boolean from primatives
Yellows are pipes around curves
Blacks are primatives.

hmmm to be more precise; I think "U" actually comes from shortening UnterWasser-boot which should translate to "UnderWater Boat".
So it wouldn't sound like it fits to the concept title from the name of it now would it :p

I have been tried to get started in the Industry, but I can not seem to get any ware. How did you get started? The area I am in there is not much for work, or people want more experience then what I have.
If they want "more experience" then tell them you have more experience :)
Everybody tells a few "white lies" once in a while to get a commission but don't take on anything you cannot complete. I think you need to improve, you need to make sure that your models really stand out from the crowd. Winning a couple of these chalenges would be a good start. So concentrate on that. when you can't see any further improvements you could make to your model ask others - there is always something to learn or that you haven't spotted :)
Never accept second best. "That'll do" are words you should never apply to a model. If you can make it better then quite clearly it won't do.
I got started by visiting local architects with a few samples of my work such as houses modelled from blueprints and composited into photographs - this really helps them see how their ideas will look in the real world and can be really helpful when applying for planning permission. Once you get work from one architect they will recommend you to their friends.
Get your work displayed in the galleries here and at CG talk and in the main magazines, Computer Arts, Digit, 3D World etc. Many ad agencies use these to select potential artists - I've picked up several big commissions from here and Caligari's trueSpace galleries.
Use your own web site as a place to show off your work in the same way as traditional artists carry a portfolio. People won't hire you without seeing work that blows them away
Never sell yourself cheap, these people are used to hiring professional artists who quote high prices. If you offer to do the job for 10% of what they usually pay they will assume you are no good. Start high and then you can always work down if you need to to secure the commission
Apply for every job you see that is relevant to you and don't be dissapointed
if you don't get them, think of how many other artists are trying for the same job. at the end of the day, it's a lucky break that you need. It's up to you to try and create your own luck or at least shorten the odds a bit.

i think; for a young artist it is hard to get a job in usa 3D art industry cuz there r old masters there and they will not leave their place to youngers, this is how they gain their life by this way, they do this since 1980-1990's and they r very very experienced, companies will not need new ones also,be sure they want experienced artists more than young ones.
my idea here is that if an artist is very good and wants to get money from this work then he/she must create his/her own company and make short movies or advertisements kinda for tv channels or other single corporations.

thanks for comment.but i am not good at well, all of other artists here r better than me.i enjoy very much to look at ur and other artists' works.

i think; for a young artist it is hard to get a job in usa 3D art industry cuz there r old farts there and they will not leave their place to youngers, this is how they gain their life by this way,
it's the same everywhere and I guess by the "old farts" comment you include me - well..... I am 47 and I've been doing this since the eighties and nineties and yes it is my way of life so why should I give MY job up to somebody who is younger just because they can't get a break? Hang on, if I quit what do I do for a living and who pays my bills?
Us "old farts" don't just get jobs because we've been around a long time we get jobs because we have built reputations over the years and we can be relied upon to get jobs done on time to the standards the clients expect.
setting up on your own is fine but you still have to sell your work at some stage if you wish to survive. Don't work for free or for promises. If people can't pay you a proper wage then don't work for them. You wouldn't do it if you went to work for a large company so why consider it when you are self employed.
Start small and get ONE satisfied client rather than a dozen who you can never hope to satisfy.
Just for the record I think that the "old fart" comment was disrespectful whomever it was aimed at.
Andy
Let the best 3d artist get the job, I don't care about age.
If you look at "behind the scenes" in new movies, you can see CG ppl from age 20-50, they first of all is very good at working as a team, so instead of using energy on being mad at the older and more experienced 3d ppl, just practice.
I sort of think like the guy in Pokemon, very cliche, but a nice thought.
I am going to be the best CG artist there is :D
Andy_k-3DT
11-06-2005, 04:46 PM
PKT, that is not a cliche, that is the only way to think.
For clients it's a "buyers market", there are so many artists around. Why should they employ anything less than the best?
Here's another piece of advice
Make sure that every piece of work you do is better than the previous one. There is a lesson to be learned from every single scene you build. Make sure you see it :)

I agree with Andy, local architects are the way to go. Dragons and aliens may be cool but there are few for sale in the real world. I've had my scifi art on the program book for libertycon. When they held the "matters of the force" starwars auction at Dragoncon I had four pieces printed on a backdrop that was seen by 50000 attendees. I haven't made a dime of either and didn't expect to. I've managed to only make about $200 over a couple of years selling fantasy meshes.
Real world mundane pieces are another matter. I made $500 and $700 for a building and a siteplan. Each took between 3 -5 days from start to printing. If your art convences a bank to fork over $20,000,000 for a new shopping mall There is certainly enough money to let you live comfortably. Once that's out of the way you can play all you like. If you can't get work, build a portfolio. I'm working on an A-frame rancher, and strip-mall now.
The thing I like about these challenges is you are more likely to be called upon to render a toaster for pay than Darth Maul. I am forced to try things I would never consider if left on my own.

Hey here is my second entry for the competition.
I looked at http://blueprints.onnovanbraam.com/ and the ships there inspired me to do this entry and I am amazed how well it came out.
hehe Well i know there is a huge error that i dont know how i didnt notice until the hour was up. anyways i dont think you will notice :).
Well this is my first ship except my U-boat (submarine) I dont know much about texturing so I havent spent much time on it. If anyone have any questions about anything like how i did sumething just ask i mostly used basic tubes and boxes for everything. (almost).
Well this Warship have a helicopter pad, anti air, medium artillery bigger cannons and more cannons And if things get nasty there is life boats for the crew.
I chose this Brazil material because it makes it easier to see details plus it looks cool. however i dont know why some places are fully black and if anyone could help me get rid of those it would be greatly appreciated.

hey andy, im actually working on a set of blueprints that i made myself 9complete with wiring diagrams, and plumbing, lighting, door types/breands etc.) and i was wondering. about how long does it take you to build a house in 3d? if you were modelling one for a client would you add furniture, hi res textures and the like? do you build it in an evironment, or add a roof? also, on average, how much would you say a "good" house would sell for? im very interested in this, and once i get a good result i will begin posting in the wip forum.

Tecnically they are airplanes, but as far as i remember in the last isue of the international navigation rules they were referenced as "high speed ships" (dont remember what was the exact name) i remember that were described as airplanes, but they try to take advantage of the ground effect take on the sea so could be described as a high speed jet-foil.

The Batman TV series being referred to (above) was created at about the same time that Jack Nicholson flew over the cookoos nest. It was a television series in the US created in the mid 1960's and ran for about 4 seasons. It spawned 2 feature length movies (if I remember correctly).

hey, yah, i would say that 3ds max fundamentals is a great book, i have that one sitting next to me. it has some awesome advice on lighting and rendering as well as explaining entry level stuff such as sub-objects and modifiers. it has a section about modelling as well. it lacks information about splines and nurbs, and texturing.
Looking through my library, I found 3 copies of 3DS Max Fundamentals: Version 2, 3, and 4. This seems to be a favored book (I didn't realize that I had bought the same book for all three versions). I do know that it has helped me as a reference.

Hey everyone!
Here's my entry: A narrowboat named Nyarlathotep.
I've done a bit of modelling before, but this is my first time doing any real texturing, so go easy on me!
Also, sorry to pixel pimp, but I had started modelling this before I saw yours! Didn't mean to do the same subject! I like yours a lot, by the way! Nice texturing.
Modelling Time: 1 hour
Texturing Time: 3 hours
Rendering Time: 3 minutes

mental ray is complicated at first, but once you get to know it a bit better its very good.
in terms of learning shaders and stuff check out this thread on CG Talk
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=104578 Its 158 pages of discussion and tips on how to use all the varied mentalray shaders. Its quite in-depth but it taught me a lot.
Hope thats helpful
Chris
P.S i hope its not a problem linking to CG Talk, if there is i'll edit it.

cheers mate, its not too accurate. i ran out of time before i could finish it proprly but im happy with it. i did some 3d work for the new batman begins movie so ive kinda caught the batman bug at the moment. but yes, the boat is based on the one from the 60's tv series, the camp version of batman.
yoursrekh - yeah you should be sorry, i'll kick your ass if you do it again. just kiddin! you can model whatever you like, there's no rule to say you cant do the same as anyone else, i dont mind.
Finaly. Made it from the third try.
Not my own design. Used blueprints as reference, although i didn't have time to make it acurate.
Modeled and rendered in 3ds max 5.

thanks ridestow, i know what they are supposed to be for, they explain it in the manual, but i mean i need help in actually using them.
i went to that cg talk and i saw on the first page the nice glowy glass material that someone made. it made me even more frustrated because, even upon following every last direction on his little "tutorial" thing he posted it still didnt glow, and refused to look good. i even downloaded his scene. which did the trick, but for some reason i cant figure out, even copying down every setting i know how to find in max and duplicating it in my own scene it STILL didnt glow. something is definetly wrong here. maybe im just retarded?
well 60 minutes of improvization...

Puckducker Damn Sea Quest DSV - wasted childhood!! - Great model thought
rjam Love the feeling of scale with your hovercraft, just great
Justo I'm not sure why, but I really like your wooden boat model, maybe I have a strange attachement to plywood!!
PKT You're improving dramatically week by week, very well done
Rooky Like the new Avatar, and some great models from you so far, I liked the 'glowing' effect on your first one
the_bully You seem to be excellent with wood and rope texturing, great model and film!
pixel pimp - cool
moon69dog wow - like the metalic paint

SOME CRITS N COMMENTS
Ursi NMC - a good try,u need to work a lot on textures n materials.
yoursekh - nice one..but would look better on water than the backyard!
"moon69dog" - ...that is some ...seriously... good $hit! hey but u know wht...the propellers should be facing towards the front...not the back!
and the boat will sink..coz of too much weight on the back side.
but a good model and render in da end. keep up the good work!

Hi all.. i promised myself i would follow up on these challenges so my contribution this week is a 17th century Chinese Junk.. it took me several tries to get the hull, experimenting with different methods of modelling. In the end I decided that the fastest way was to start with a plane, shape it then apply a shell modifier.. difficult topic but there is much to learn from it...
sorry about the crappy textures and the small file size(had to bring it down to get below 100kb) i would like to complete it sometime but for now i have to go to bed... :xx:
ps: there are a lot of great models so far!
edit:: forgot to add in the stats - 1hr modelling time in 3ds Max. Texture/lighting/compositing around 30 mins.. Render time 30 secs...

Fishing Boat.
When I was smaller i loved to go to the docks to check out all the boats and this proves i didnt learn at all how the hell they look like :)
Well here is my attempt on a fishing boat staying in a small harbour over the night.
Oh yeah i decided to put some materials on... looks better with them but they are crap.. lightning isnt good either...
anyways Tomorow im leaving Dubai over the summer vacations to go to my home country Sweden and I will probably not visit these forums for some months. (no internet ): )
Nice models People and some really got nice water, I wish I could do that. the Bryce render looks good. maybe if i can get enough money to buy bryce lol...
Thank you very much b3ta, it's commets like that that makes it easyer and fun to improve :)
And I have to say your model is perfect, no crits about it at all.
And I love the Michey Mouse boat Pixle Pimp really oldschool, very nice model and texturing.

nice one..but would look better on water than the backyard!
Thank you! It was on water originally, but I decided to be different. I was playing around with grass - I wanted it to look like it was an old barge left out for years - but the method I was using was a bit crap for long grass so I just handed it in :). You can actually see the grass a bit on the high resolution renders, but it's nothing special.
Thanks for the comment.

Bentura, just do it! Mr. Andy said 'if it floats on water and can carry passengers or cargo...' A Sea Plane fits that description.

A sea plane isn't allowed - I think the clue is in the name :)
however, I will alllow flying boats. Those intending to model one better make sure the model fits into the brief.
Just sticking a set of floats onto a plane doesn't count. If it has a "boat shaped" hull then it may well be allowed

Ok, this thing was a beast. A casual glance and you think "well, not much to it", but there is a lot of stuff on the command center. An hour was no where near enough time. I didn't even get to do any of the little bits scattered around the ship.
Firefly, I helped with a landing craft for a mod for Rainbow Six a few years ago. Nowhere as detailed as the plans you had. But you can see it along with my other work at my website if you are so inclined.

Hello Everyone!
My last participation lays a while back (it was the first modelling challenge).
But now I found the time again and want to show my entry.

Modelling time: until the last second of the 60 min :smug:

Hi! Nice models and good renders. I made this boat after 3 attempts. ( the model is still incomplete ). am submitting it anyway. Good luck every one.

Back with a entry, after my "Star Wars" break ;)
Wanted to made a few more models this week, but seriously.. this is a lot more harder than I expected. I needed 3 runs to get one model done in time and in a presentable status (and its still far away from complete).
Hope the wireframe shot is a bit clear at least how I made the model. The body is basically Loftnurbs and a Extrudenurbs for the middle part. The sail was 'modelled' with Clothenurbs (wireframe shows the sail object before applying any forces). Ropes are basically simple 2 point splines.
regards,
tokai
Renz - wow they are big sails! - Great model, and you've even done the part under the water, and the pulleys too, great effort - this weeks producing some good work
I had tough time to make the sails within 1 hour time because they are not symmetrical. Pulleys and ropes took most of the modelling time. Yes this week has produced some very good models and I can almost remember some boats modelled inPeddle Power speed challenge.
