View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr. 25 - Star Wars DUEL
Michael
12-06-2005, 07:53 PM
The reason I wanted you to come up with many different characters is todays theme - to paint a Jedi - Sith DUEL. Take one Jedi and one Sith from the characters that were developed in the previous challenge and put them into a fight scene.
RULES (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=24525)
Here are the characters from which you pick two ( the one with the sign UNVOTABLE you can use as well :) ). Remember - Sith wields a red lightsaber, Jedi - every other. :)
Have FUN.

Too many sith characters....
Can't a sith fight another sith?
ShadowMaker SdR
12-06-2005, 11:56 PM
So if I understand it correctly you have to imitate someone else's design to make a new painting?
Michael
13-06-2005, 03:11 AM
Dave - you can make two siths fighting, no problem.
ShadowMaker - you don't need to imitate design itself as a style. Just use a character with it's clothes, body, propotions, clothes etc. from one's work and make him fight with another character.
The reason for this kind of challenge - as a concept artist there are many occasions in which you need to use continue someone e;se's work for a customer - use previously done characters, designs. Imagine that it's one of those situations.
IMPORTANT - be sure to WRITE whose character you're using.
It has just occured to me... I hope you all don't mind using your characters in this challenge?

This is going to be really fun!
Oh yes I'll apologize ahead of time if I ruin your designs

Great idea using each others designs, should be an interesting challenge.
Sound great! Let's see want we can do!
Jannik
13-06-2005, 01:19 PM
hehe nice challenge... hmmm lets see what we can come up with
retard
13-06-2005, 03:18 PM
this could be really fun...
but I don't get one thing?
Do I have to pick my own character as one of the fighters or am I free to choose both of them? could there be more than just two fighters? (= just playing a little with my mind here... hehe... this challange I have the time to finish... SCHOOL'S OUT FOREVER!!! but still only 2weeks long this maybe my last speedpainting for a very long time...blablabla good luck every one, LET'S GET IT ON!!!
Jannik
13-06-2005, 03:34 PM
as I understand the challenge you can choose whatever characters you like...
one of your own fighting one of the others, or two characters made by anyone else fighting...
even if you made two, you can choose them to fight... (but as I can see you only submitted one right?)
Michael
13-06-2005, 06:34 PM
Jannink is right. You can choose whichever two you like. :) If you want, you can make three of them fight, even better.

14-06-2005, 12:56 AM
ok thanks guys
then now I guess I'll start painting then... (=
I´ve been with my gf last 2 months and I hadn´t time for nothing else  But what a pity, I would liked to enter to the jedy-sith character design comp :-( So i´ll try to enter in this one. I like qwed's and pentagramma´s. If I finally enter to this comp, i´ll use it.
And the idea of to use the other designs is good :thumb up: :-D
Hey! What´s the dead-line?
Jannik
15-06-2005, 01:15 PM
probably next wednesday the 22nd since it started this sunday :hmm:
Michael
15-06-2005, 08:36 PM
Deadline is on Wednesday the next week.... Rules say it all :P
Well, fierstly this is only a test. I don´t want that this early idea counts for the comp cos I dunno if it would be definitive.
I wanted to do something kinda comic book scene like.
Perhaps they are too similar and there is no too much "feeling". I´ll think to change the duelists.
info: painter7 - wacom tablet - 40 minutes.

Michael: is it okay to change the lightsaber... for example.. your design have this "double" saber... can I change that into a "simple" one?.. Hope you understand what I mean... (=
Jannik
17-06-2005, 04:04 AM
hmm ok, since noboy seemed to like what I did last time  I'll do the excact same style hehe
again trying to have this cartoonish style with somewhat strong effectfull colors
the characters used are Retards woman and my own 2nd entry, enjoy
edit: and yet again forgot to post time spend... 2-3 hours of concept and sketching with pencil and then 3 hours in photoshop...
Jannik: About six hours??? I think it was too much.
Hmmm they don´t look like fighting, maybe doing a coreography for a music video :haha:
qwed88
17-06-2005, 08:10 AM
I believe it was said if needed you could take up to a day, havent needed to but maybe he did
Jannik
17-06-2005, 01:01 PM
RBL - according the rules... quote: ...but if you paint a whole day, you won't get disqualified
[joke filter on]I can maybe see what you mean but hey... are your characters fighting? seems like they just are standing for a modelling job hehe [/joke filter off]
If it's not ok with people that 6 hours are used please say so, cause then I'll speed up... then I'll just post my drawings without running them through photoshop, and color them by hand...
qwed88
17-06-2005, 01:45 PM
I think it's ok to take what time you need, as long as your reasonable and honest about it
retard
17-06-2005, 03:31 PM
hehe I would like to see more from that fight Jannik...
But if you lay a finger on my woman...!!!! :grr: hehe
beat her up badly!!!!
Jannik
17-06-2005, 03:38 PM
retard -> sorry but I think if I had made the picture later in their fight it would have involved something with far less cloths on, and we can't have that now can we haha
I dunno haw fast is Jannik with photoshop but I still thinking taht 6 hours is too much for that draw.
retard
17-06-2005, 06:59 PM
CHK and Cid 1st... sorry.... (=
messed up Cids arm but doesn't got much more time off so here is my entry for this challange...I'm not quite satisfied but here goes...
~2h30min spent on it Wacom(need more training) Photoshop + quicksketch 20min...
I thought of CHKs as rather small and Cids as a little bigger...
I wanted it to look like Cids where atacking from above...
Psionic
17-06-2005, 08:39 PM
1 hour 45 mins photoshop, 30 mins on the sith, 1 1/4 hours on the female jedi ;-))) I would have liked to work on it for a bit longer but thats not really the point of speedpainting ;) it was good fun!! I used Qwed88's Sith reptile and Smallpieces' Female jedi as refs...Hope you like it guys!!

Jannik
17-06-2005, 10:31 PM
Psionic -> awesome sketch you got there... nice result
RBL -> concerning the time used for a speed sketch I can't see what's wrong in using 6 hours ie.
I can see that it's maybe not excactly speedy, but then it should be stated otherwise in the rules, and as long as the rules are like they are I don't think it's fair to make "negative" comments on a sketch since it can affect the votings later as I see it ;-) of course on the other side "positive" comments could also affect the votings hmmmm...
Jannik: I preffer to lose being honest, than to win by kissing the other´s butts. Despite i don´t found my comment to you so negative. You draw the jedi/siths jumping around in a cartoonish style. It doesn´t look a serious scene, so i dunno how to truly comment it.
Psionic: Pretty good for that timing. The rendering works very well. You put effor in the girl´s clothes reflections. I think you have solved the draw at this phase cause i see some fawls. The face of the girl should be shown. To hide the character face means that he/she has no personality, emptyness. This is the reason i drew the qwed´s back off the camera cause it looks empty. And the other one was the composition. I see the scene too cropped by the floor and by the sky. Give it more space by the sides for apreciate a landscape.
qwed88
18-06-2005, 06:36 AM
Wow Psionic that turned out really good, you did his cape allot better than I, really cool seeing someone draw something you did
And RBL cannot wait to see a more complete version, that is going to look really good
Michael
18-06-2005, 03:53 PM
RBL - you said that six hours was too long for that drawing - that, among other things was a negative part. It is obvious that you don't like the style, but it's not up to you to decide how much time it should take. When I've written the rules, I made them for all - the beginners and more advanced users, that make speedies more quickly, so that everyone can take part in the challenges and HAVE FUN, because this is what we do here, aside of learning. Don't forget that ;) and let others have fun and learn too ;)
Good work guys. Psionic - outstanding :)
Jannik - not bad ;)
Sorry I forget the retard one:
The strokes looks dirty and the colors very dark. There are things that i can´t figure wery well. But It has a lot of dinamism and expression! The big guy against the little one. The bigger one looks very fierce and he could be sure that the victory will be hers. But the sith one looks like a master and a treasoning one...
Michael-3DT: You´re right, it isn´t up to me to decide what drawing time is good or wrong. But this reason means that anybody, but you the admin, can make comments about the times?
Comments are only comments and it shouldn´t be taken like "God word". It´s up to the artist to know how to take advantage of them. To take the good ones and ignore the bad ones and, very important, don´t to lose his time on them.
I used Michael-3DT's Sith, and Smallpieces' female jedi as duelers.
"Trust" drawingboard (nope, not wacom)
used ca. 2hours and 30min in oC11b68 (Open Canvas)
A plesure to work with such cool characters :)

qwed88: You´ve drown that character into your way. I relly like the frogman head . But the other head looks tiny :/
qwed88
20-06-2005, 06:27 AM
I was'nt to sure on the proportions, I kinda imagined that the frog guy would be much bigger than the rest, sorry If I screwed anyones character up, wanted to draw theirs but in my own style I guess
halo.. this is my first post here..
3-4 hours using photoshop..
xhen: :/ hmmm I´m not sure but... Is the furry one a giant?
Michael
21-06-2005, 01:10 AM
Hey, xhen, welcome to the forums :) Looks OK, I would make more shading here, but it's OK. :) I would try some different perspective views, but it's OK for a start ;)
RBL - what else could it be... and about the previous thing - you totally missed my point - it's not about making comments, it's about being constructive and not to discourage people :). We all start someday and we all take more time at start, so be more gentle and constructive with the comments, that all ;) Not a big thing to do, don't you think? :)
Michael

Smallpiece and cids characters....
done in PS with wacom and with paper and pen...
quicksketch: 20min
PS: ~2h
simple enviroment but timesaving (=
as of cids pose... very much based on the original..
that's all folks no more speedies for me for a while... I may join, but I will only have saturdays free, we'll see...
Nice entries everyone... Like that big fury one, it's awsome...good job
Michael-3DT- I think I was very constructive in my comments here by making extense ones about the pieces shown here. Not only an: "outstanding" or "cool". That things don´t help to anybody. And I try to point the good things and the bad ones for get It better.
I´ve never tryed to make fun of others work. So I want you to tell me when I was wrong.
I´m moderator in an amateur drawing community and I used to do direct and very hard comments (more than here) and that people used to appreciate it a lot. Because the only thing I want is to help by using my art knowledges and saying honestly what I think is good or wrong.
So if my coments are unsuitable for forums.3dtotal.com, i´ll limit myself to an only word next time like: "Outstanding" or "cool".

RBL
I think it was when you said that you thought it was too much time spent on the picture... that's not constructive at all... but I'm not Michael so I'm not sure if thats it... my opinion though...
you're a great artist and I think you're aware of that fact... I took your comments for my 1st entry seriously because that was constructive... (=
make comments about the artworks and not about the artists... and I think you'll do just fine...

really nice... I see you used the same characters anyways, nice... did you even consider using others... d=
the comic layout brings life into the scene... good job
Michael
22-06-2005, 01:54 PM
RBL - retard was right, it was about that comment "to much time spent on the picture" - I was writing about it all the time. I don't mean that you should make "cool" and "outstanding" comments only. Don't jump on the opposites here, man. Pretty cool work, by the way. Participate more often in the challenges.
retard - pretty nice. I would suggest you paint more environtments, clouds rendering etc... and maybe try to use more bushes for the shading, not just smudge tool ;) It would add a lot to it. Keep working, you're doing good. :)

22-06-2005, 03:37 PM
Cool entries so far people :) Always nice to see diffferent styles on a same carachter :)
Here´s my entry this week.. just couldn´t give up a chance to paint a SW duel :P
EDIT: Lol, forgot to give my time, it was 1 hour 24 minutes
the quality might be bad, had to scale it a bit :(
oh yeah! And I used Qwed88´s first one and Littlefish´s entries
Michael-3DT: I understood the time part, but I thought it was worse things.
retard: You´re right, to commenting work not the author is a way to avoid that kind of mistakes.
Glottis: You´ve done a pretty complet scene with, ground, sky, sun and a far city. At 1st sight is hard to see what the furry one is doing, maybe due little contrast between the colors of the bg. I don´t like that the blue light saber covers the sith´s face. And one more thing, the color of the light affects the color of the shadow. So the duelists shadows should be brown.
Good luck for everyone.
Less than hour. I´ve done it while I was seeing "The Simpson" ;P . Pencil sketch and photoshop color. Just for fun:

Here's mine. Just smashed it together in an hour using Photoshop CS and my tablet. I tried to capture the intensity of the saber battle in a fast loose manner that accented the characters (great designs btw, all around, I'm sorry I missed that one) without requiring an excessive amount of painting. And I did it in letterbox format for fun :)...

1. Brownboot - I love the lighting. I also like how it "feels" like a quick painting while still capturing the sense of drama. Awesome job.
2. Psionic - Excellent, excellent painting job. The only reason I didn't give you 1st is because the characters seem kind of stiff. No biggie, just needs to feel more dyanmic, I think. Great job.
2. RBL - I really like that you chose to depict a sequence instead of just one image. Plus I like that your work seems kind of raw and gritty. I feel the anger dude. Nice work.
That's it for me. Good luck everybody!
