View Full Version : Reputation points?

hello, I'm a bit slow so I just caught up on this reputation thing, seems I got two negative comments for stuff I really do not understand, but being the way I am, I probably deserve it
anyway, my question is - how does it work? I've noticed all the 3DT people got max rep points, but Warin-3DT is "doing OK", what's with that?
and can anyone just file a "complaint" against you? seen a lot of people help others and they still only have one green block, some explanation would be nice and I apologize if this has been discussed before

I have 2 reputation points. Guess that's what you get for giving people technical advice.
Where did you check the comments, though?

Hi I'm sorry if you've already provided a lot of help but no one give u reputation point. Maybe u could pm the thread to the moderator and ask for reputation point.
But I deeply believe that, when u are helping the other members, what u have "gained" is not reputation point, but something more valuable is during the helping process, we are actually learning.
Other members could "take away" ur reputation point, but they can't take away ur 3d knowledge. And when u are sharing the 3d knowledge, actually u are revising, learning more deep and detail information.
I think this is the reason that I get the highest reputation point at the forum. If u take away my points, I'm nobody.

I think you need something like 100 points for your green bar to change.
And since a member can only give 1 point......
I`ve recieved points on my artwork alone which I dont think is right.
My art is no better than anyone elses.
It should be on your activity as a helpful member alone....
DeadlyFreeze

1 point? I've always got 2 points from people. Anyway I noticed that when you hold your mouse over rep icon it has a differnt saying.
Like mine is 'is doing OK' and Lorenzo's is 'is obviously worth listening to'.
...and whats the grey rep for? I've gotten one before, but I dont know if it gave me more, less or any rep points.
Brent
28-06-2005, 03:29 PM
I think you are right it may indeed be 2 points.
I also have a greyed out reputation.
I believe that is someone who gave a point be then removed it?...I dunno.
I have an odd number[as in not even] of rep points.
I would think the number should always be an even number?
DeadlyFreeze
28-06-2005, 03:43 PM
hmmm I dont know, mine is 20. That's why I figured it went by 2. It might change at a certain point. Like when you reach a certain amount it stops giving 2 and starts give 1.

ur user cp, it says it right in the middle with comments that people left after giving/taking away ur points. the only one i got is someone shunting me for making the 'r u selling somit?' joke in that religion cr4p thread. to whoever gave me that comment, i think i have the right to voice my opinion as well! church to me is another form of totalitarian regime, somit i know quite a bit about, what with me being born and raised in one an all.

it makes sense, I think everyone appreciates an input on a work in progress regardless of a member's rep points, however, you might want to pay more attention to the advice from a respected member...maybe, don't know :)

I was just kidding lol. I don't think that the reputation points actually hold alot of value. If you talk with people in the forums you begin to understand who knows their stuff anyways. So I think the best way to be able to trust someone is just to talk with them and see their work. Everyone's work speaks for itself, that should be a good enough gauge as to their skill level anyways. :)

HAHAHA looks like monte cristo still has some fine tuning to do on his creation XD
Reputation can work well, if everyone knows how to use them and what they are for.
Like rating threads it works best if its a habit, like "Thanks, have some rep" for useful info etc.
Just start using it yourself and hopefully others will too, it should work better in this forum after that.
Brent
07-12-2005, 12:37 AM
ok...from what I was told here is how it breaks down.
In order for a member to give points that result in a green square they must have firstly recieved points from someone else.If they haven`t recieved points from another member then their efforts to give you extra points resultsin a grey square and no points added to "your" total.
What this does is prevent members from flooding the forum with bogus new accounts only to boost their own rep point total.
As to how many points you need before you gain an extra square....I don`t know...I assume it`s 100 or 150.....but I dunno for sure.

I agree with Ilkejav. It felt a little strange when they were first implimented, and I don't think everyone quite knows how they're used. While I didn't do much sucking up, I did end up with about 80 points before I was metamorphosized. It's a neat system, and kind of lets you know who's been naughty and who's been nice.
If I had to critique it at all, it's that it'd be nice if people used it more often.

In order for someone to give rep points to anyone else, they must also have rep points of their own. So the gray squares you've been receiving are positive points, but from users without enough reputation to give you some.
And mods get those squares just cause they're the ones running the show. :) I'm not saying they don't deserve it... :D

the problem is, when I help people, I either help 2 categories of people, the "noobs" who are new to this forum, and need someone to greet them in this lovely place, and, thus, don't know about the rep points, or I help the masters by giving them useful crits for their art... and often they don't think about giving points to lesser artists in the likes of me. there are exceptions of course... and that sums up to the 18 points I got.
I think there are a few other people in this situatuion as well... there must be.
[EDIT] make it 19, some generous soul gave me a rep point for not crying like a baby... this thread IS weird...

noo but to be honest, the system isn't really working, while I'm too busy doing other things at the moment, some of the other users really deserve higher rep
anyway, VERY OFFTOPIC (hey it's my thread), here's my latest 3D project, however it is NOT 3ds max but ALIAS STUDIOTOOLS
did a car project in school and it's safe to say I kicked ass and produced a finer rendering than my teacher which obviously irritated him (he called me unambitious and lazy)

And guys, I think that the whole thing is messed up. I mean, what Ilkjav mk5 said is very true. We are either helping out the noobs or helping gods. And neither will give you reps. The good artists think that what you have to say is not that important, and the lousy artists just don't even know about the whole rep thing.
That is why I have that thing in my signature. I hope that if I give some good advice, people will take it to heart and give some good reps.....

Well, I've looked at it. What I wanted to do was change the rate that the green dots appear, so that people might actually see some point to using reputation. Problem is, it's not an otion without hacking code. Pretty dumb if you ask me. Ive added more levels so that the comments vary a bit more. We'll keep looking into this thing, or we'll scrap it.
Josiah
12-12-2005, 11:45 PM
ok. that is a good idea. I think that you should get a new green square every 50. That way, more people have them, and more people will see what they are. Because as it is right now, only the moderators have more than 1 green square....And that kinda defeats the purpose.....

@Monte, i know another forum where the squares are so small its more like a progress bar than anything else, i think there might be a different plugin for VBB for that.
My suggestion is to make the icon more readable, the reason most people dont look at it is it is near the bottom and between two icons no one ever uses (well I dont), it is also a minature picture of some scales which is hard to make out. If you made it for instance a slightly larger glowing plus symbol (maybe in an easy place like next to the name), people might find it less wierd to click on, also having a plus and a minus symbol so you dont need to check whick your doing might help.
I realise most of that may need code hacking (except the icon thing, go do that now!) but i also know that the vbb support site will have more than enough plugins and add ons to help you out if theyre anything like the phpbb.
Better yet let me mess around with it  i've always wanted a different colour scheme.. something darker and cool ;P
Josiah
13-12-2005, 02:57 AM
A scale?? I always thought it was some explosion. It is soooooo small that even I didn't know what it was untill a few months ago........
I think that it is time for some good adjustments.
I think that Blackwolfs idea of a progress bar is a great idea.......
Make them smaller and have a new one added every 10 or 15 comments.
