Speed Animation Challenge - Week 01 - Swing
LostBear
11-07-2005, 05:33 PM
Heres the rough premise for this weeks challenge. Rules are being finalised, an official post will be here soon. To get you started, this is the brief anyway incase you want to get cracking:
This week we're going to do something with a swing :
The basic exercise is that you guys think about EVERYTHING that can go wrong with sitting on a swing. Just choose to most funny thing you can come up with and animate it
-recomended resolution 320x240- 480x640 is ok, but only if the file doesn't get to big.
-You can use ANY rigg or software you like, as long as the animation is hand made
-the maximum time for this one is 30 SECONDS.
-use Quicktime if possible
Have Fun!

Thanx Chrisp-3DT and lost bear :)
That's the exercise for this week. Now some guides etc.
planning
11-07 - first day - exercise is explained - guides are set
15-07 - last day, finals must be submitted
16-07 - judging
18-07 - new challange
Final
You can post as many WIP's as you want, post them in this thread.
You can only post ONE final animation, the one you want to be judged, you tell us which one it is by making a new post and put this in it:
FINAL SUBMISSION SPEED ANIMATION SESSION - 1 - SWING - [YOUR NAME]
followed by the link. Caps are needed, becuase it catches the eye
so that are the guides, including the one LostBear posted, now let me see those entries! I'm working on one right now :haha:

Ive got the swing part sussed....having trouble with the charchter attatched to it though!!??!! :grr:
Should have summit to post soon

Why don't you just use a constraint? Like in maya you use point(position) constraint from the character's main control to the swing's control. If you mix that with a rotation constraint the character should follow the swing completely. Obviously when he's off the swing you just turn off the constraint :)
LostBear
11-07-2005, 07:44 PM
yeah...im using max 7 which has similar constraints. im nearly there..
I have a little teaser anim already
ive used simcloth for the ropes

Hey there everyone! Here's a few guidelines, most of them have been repeated before, but this is a complete list of what you should do:
- The time limit is Friday, the 15th of July.
- You can use premade rigs and models because we are interested in your animating and interpretation of the ideea.
- Maximum animation length is 30 seconds.
- Recommended screen resolution in 320x240 ( you can also try up to 640x480 if you really have to :) ).
- Any software or plugin is ok.
- You can post W.I.P.s but you are allowed one and only one complete entry. That link is also final, you cannot redo it and post a new one. You must also specify what you worked on and how long it took and what premade objects or rigs you used, along with a short description of your animation.
- Webspace is up to you.
What can go wrong on a swing? We shall see. I've started on this three hours ago, here's what I've got so far ( just a screenshot :o )

So I've been working on this a bit today and I've got the basic block in :)
Tommorow or tonight I'll work everything more out etc. I hope I can find some time because I have to move and my birthday is coming up, but I'll find time :D
So, PAY ATTENTION TO THE DOG!!! He rules!
All these riggs are not mine, I figured I wouldn't have time enough to build a rigg myself, so I've got a few from the internet, they're both lichiman's
swing entry Oshiroii - block-in - Qtime movie, 900 kb (http://home.hetnet.nl/~rome61piet/speedanimation/swing.mov)
tell me what you think :haha:
LostBear
11-07-2005, 11:46 PM
That was pretty neat. However, its not really clear what the dog does when he walks accross. Does he knock the a-fram over or summit? looks like he just walks off....
oh dear. have i missed the point?
The trouble i think is the dog is tiny in comparison the swing and man.
Maybe he needs promoting the other side of the swing.
Good job though! (sorry!)

12-07-2005, 12:19 AM
Thanx lostBear,
I liked the idea you send me, but I'll stick with this one. Basically the dog pees on the pole and the whole thing collapses. I still have to add the lights, camera angles and particles, then it will be very clear what's going on. I didn't bother to insert it all since the timing might change etc. Also, the compresion will be different than ^_^
thanx for the comments :)

no problem shroii
get it now! thats the trouble with block animtions....sometime doesnt make things clear.
good job though.
im not doing so well. ive got my bloke on the swing but once i intriduce dynamics he shifts around. hes linked to the swing but its doing summit weird. ill figure it. might try reactor rope instead of simcloth.

Shiroii, nice ideea, but it would be funnier if the swing falls on the guy... My opinion. :D

Freespace how did you do the ropes...im having some trouble?
Freespace-3DT
12-07-2005, 03:46 AM
Oh, I remember that animation... Way back in 1999. :) Though my own ideea came to me a few days back, and it didn't have a swing in it... You know when someone annoys you SOOO much, you just imagine something really heavy falling on them? Well, I translated that into this challenge. :D
LostBear
12-07-2005, 03:51 AM
Ok....now i have Cartmans voice rolling around my head. thanx.
Id be real intrested to know how you managed to get the guy sitting on the swing and swinging without slipping about. My biped keeps sliding a little the high points in the swing.
Freespace-3DT
12-07-2005, 04:08 AM
:) That's a lovely voice!
Well, the swing is reactor rope + a rigid body hanging from the rope ( the seat ), and I simply linked the body to the seat.
LostBear
12-07-2005, 04:28 AM
thanks
hmmm...i tried that but it didnt seem to work. i can get the seat and the ropes ok but the chrachter doesnt stay with the seat. did you link vertices to his hands?
Titan3
12-07-2005, 02:40 PM
Well, here's a first look at my entry, the story is about that little robot that goes a little bit too far when he decides to go on the whole new XZK4000 swing...what will happen to him? You'll have to wait and see.
Still to be added:
scene prop objects
textures
animations
some effects
sound
Hope you like my ideea :max:
LostBear
12-07-2005, 03:52 PM
nice one titan...think i can see were that ones going!!
Freespace - ughhh. Still cant seem to make this work. I have the swing setup...and linked the "body" to it...but all i get is this...am i missing something?

Titan3: I've got an ideea what you want to do, too... But who knows what your evil ingenious mind will create... :) Funny looking robot though... Looks like a bunch of trash cans stuck together, reminds me of Robots.
LostBear: First of all, no need to make the body a rigid body. My character isn't even in the simulation, it is added afterwards. Just direct link it to the swing, like you link any object in 3dsmax ( select&link ), that's what I meant, but do it after you've gotten the swing to swing. To get the swing to swing, make a powerful wind to blow it, and then stop the wind. The swing should keep on swinging for quite a while, depending on mass and the rope's properties. Second, what screencapture program did you use to record video??
Diabolos: Welcome. Please make yourself at home and come up with a crazy ideea for this challenge. :) Feel free to post WIPs cause myself and the others are here to help you out if you get stuck.

Titan3 and Diabolos, looking forward to your entries :)
Lostbear, maybe you can use this, here's how I solved the swing problem, it's in maya, but the principles are the same.
-I made the swing geo
-gave bones to the ropes and skinned them
-added an IKspline. This is usually used to create the spinal column in characters and gives you a lot of simplified control. So if you have 300 bones, you can control them with only 4 or 10 or whatever points. If you pull out one control, everything else responds to it.
-Next I made some clusters and gave the clusters handles. This is not something in max, but it basically means that I picked the control points (cv's on the spline) and made the acceceble more easily.
-Then I just point and orient constraint my main character control to the swing.
-then I parented the lowest rope control to the swing control. If I now move the seat the rope will move allong. I could have gone farther and actually weighted the parenting so that everything moves along with the bottom one, but I'll do it by hand :D
Hope that helps a bit, it doesn't use any dynamics, which makes it more easy to do.
LostBear
12-07-2005, 09:44 PM
Thanks Shiroii
OMG it was staring me in the face....didnt even think about rigging it!!
Max has similar controls but a though just struck me. Dont know if maya has this at all but MAX has a reaction diolog. This means that you can wire up one bones rotation to a slider and add in all the other bones and all the child bones will rotate with falloff...like a finger curling.
Oh man. its official then...more than one way to skin a cat!
ill give this a wiz...ill post it if it works out
Titan3
12-07-2005, 10:24 PM
lol, I know what you think I'll do freespace...but I won't I'll do something totally unexpected :) ... because I dont want to do something that will be anticipated
LostBear
12-07-2005, 11:31 PM
nice one. (no offense freespace...thanx fro advice but reactor was confusing me, i could see how it would work out though just couldnt make the darn thing do it!)
ok...took me a wee while but i have managed to rig the swing.
all boned up and skinned (needs tweak its not perfect) and wired up with reaction manager to a custome UI slider...phew!)
http://www.maxforever.co.uk/3dt/swing/WIP_reaction.mov
sweet...now ive got a rig, i can start actually creating...onward!
cheers u guys

YOu should past more time on the character animation then physic stuff . (that should be illegal btw)
LostBear
13-07-2005, 12:39 AM
Welcome back pikmin look forward to seeing your work here.
shiroii
13-07-2005, 02:39 AM
Hey Pikmin, good to have you here :D
About the dynamics.
That's kind of a tough one, I think it's just on the edge. Wouldn't they use dynamics in features, or productions for these kind of things? Obviously you will hand-animate the character completely, so I don't think dynamics would be a big deal in this case. UNLESS you want him to drop off the swing and switch him with a ragg doll and just let the simulation run. THAT WOULD BE VERY ILLIGAL and veeery -->:lame:
What do you guys think?
Anyhow, Lostbear has found his solution, glad I could help ^_^
Now here's my update. I've worked a bit on it tonight, nothing impressive yet, but the block is much more detailed, and the timing more refined. Next I'll clean things up more and start doing some details.
Speed animation Challange week 1: swing - version 2 - winzip - 900kb (http://home.hetnet.nl/~rome61piet/speedanimation/swing2.zip)
ow yeah, didn't work on the dog, so he still moves to slow :D
Pikmin
13-07-2005, 04:33 AM
If I could decide, we couldnt use any dynamics. No eyes candy dynamics that could make us look those animation instead of the hand-animate character. Just pure animation! :)
LostBear
13-07-2005, 02:31 PM
Hi guys...thats looking better shiroii, better camera angle.
Im with Pikmin on the dynamics i think. The trouble with dynamics is they adhere to the laws of physics (not sure about maya but 3ds max has the havok engine built in) so you can set things up in exactly the same way 10 times, but when you run the simulation you will get 10 different results. Its unpredictable, and difficult to keyframe other elements to as you dont know where things are going to end up. With a rig like mine, im in complete control.
About that rig....its nearly finished. Just adding a second controller in to make it twist a little to add a little more to the motion of the swing.
Will post a clip later today.

Looks like fun anima3d! Looking forward to it :haha:
LostBear, I think you should speed up the animation. But uhm, what's with the ragdoll? That isn't animation, right? It would be muuuuch better if you just hand animated the fall instead of using a ragdoll, because dynamics isn't animation O_o
LostBear
13-07-2005, 10:01 PM
ermmm yeah. your kinda right.shiroii....but with no definate rule on the use of dynamics i used em. And anyway, if your saw the hand animated fall i did in the block anim movie above, who can blame me!!. it sucked!!.
Yeah it is a little slow, ill fix that.

Howdy guys,

Well, according to the rules, this is pretty much your last chance to put the final entry... Come on guys. Let's see your animations. Shiroii? Where's yours? Lostbear??
Anima, if nothing happens, this isn't respecting the week's theme. With all due respect, this can't be considered as a contending animation because ( as nice as the lighting and cartoonish scenery is ) it's not really what we asked. Maybe you can do something in a few hours?? Until we call it a week and start checking the animations out.
For voting, I suggest we do a democratic vote.
Each of you give 1,2 and 3 points to whom you deem most worthy. We will make some mathematical calculations and see the top.
Titan3, I'm sorry you couldn't finish. This is what happens when you don't give this enough attention. You've had 5 days. You probably thought it was gonna be 2 hours worth of work... didn't ya? :) Well, it's still quite the challenge. Maybe next time.
At least for the sake of it, finish your render and show us your work.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the entries, they look lovely :D
I liked the little variation of a swing, with the baseball bat :haha:
But .... Uhm
I've got a biiiiig problem. My computer is pretty much F*ed up. It starts, but then I get to choose a mode in which I want it to start, safety mode, normal, last edited etc. But no matter what I choose, after the choice, I see a flash of a blue screen (for like 0.0002 secs) and then it reboots, over and over and over and over again :wall:
So I'm going to get it fixed next week, because I can't think of anything I could do myself. Hopefully I'll be able to use it again very soon. Right now I'm on my bro's computer, and hopefully he'll let me use it some more to post some comments etc, but I won't be able to give any entries myself :wall: :wall: :(
I'll check here again in a few days and give you guys an update on what's going on. I hope to see you all soon and I'm sorry for my absence...
One good thing though is that next week will ROOOOOCK!!! We've got a VERY cool challange for you all :D

nice entries everyone
dont worry shiroii...im sure youll manage something. You can always do a traditional disney job and draw it!! i recommend monkeyjam for putting it together...this is an speed animation compo...who said it has to be 3d? Anyway i think somethimes people are so fixated on learning 3d and trying to master that they dont start at the beggining....traditional cell animation.
Truth is your 3d will be better for it.
I say we make it a challenge one week to do a pencil test anim. we might have to shorten its length though..(30 secs equals 720 hand drawn frames at PAL frame rate)
perfect oppurtunity to brush up on our compositing skills i say.
Id like to know other peoples thoughts...shall we give this a shot or what?

Hey Lostbear, I don't know about that. At least, I'm not really that attracted to the ideea actually. Guess I'm fixated on mastering 3d :) Dunno about the other people.
Anyway, there's a nice and complex challenge for next week set up from last week already and we want to set that one.
Much better, anima. Since it is first week, I say we take into consideration, THIS ONE TIME, all the submitted animations. So we've got:
Anima3d, Freespace, Mystik & Lostbear.
I'll put it like this:
3 points: Anima3d
2 points: Mystik ( nice ideea, you gave the swing a whole new meaning )
1 point: Lostbear
I'm waiting for your scores. So come on... :)

I have one question for everyone. Do you rank people for the quality of the animation or the presentation?
LostBear
17-07-2005, 03:05 PM
ok...here are my scores
Mystik: 3 points
Freespace: 2 points
Anima3d: 2 Points
Can believe i disqualified myself and still got points! thanks..but you shouldnt have guys. It was a bad effort.
Mystik...Pikmin was correct, yours is by far the best since you put some effort into the movements according to the shifts in weight through the swing. The landing of the little guy was a bit weird but this is very difficult to do convincingly.

I take both into consideration, because it is the unison of these two elements, animation and presentation, that serve to make a well built project. You don't see Blizzard cinematics with the bipeds instead of characters, and you don't see an excellently modelled&textured Orc moving around like a puppet pal. So both count.
Mystik: 3 points
Freespace: 2 points
Anima3d: 2 Points
Lostbear, I think you meant to give Anima3d 1 point. ( I'm not trying to be mean, sorry Anima :D )
-----------------------------------------------
Summary:
Mystik: 10 points
Freespace & Anima3d: 6 points
Lostbear: 2 points
And the winner for Speed Animation Challenge Week 1: The Swing is Mystik for his wonderfully accurate character animation and unique interpretation of the word "Swing". :) Congrats mate!

Hey anima3d. I agree. Next week we shall have Pikmin along and Diabolos, Titan3, maybe Shiroii. So people should be coming. We've had a lot of views though, over a thousand.
This whole project is meant to attract more people to animation. So far, result haven't been legendary, indeed. But patience. Time will tell. :) This next challenge is quite difficult so you should start working on it on Monday. Just my recommendation. It will open the way for your creativity and I'm curious how each of you interprets it in their own way.
Gonna PM Chrisp-3DT to make the new thread Monday morning. And when I log on I'll let you know what it's all about.

Well, I think it was quite allright. More people and more entries should be just fine. We've had no incidents, no arguments, no spamming so far, so it's just right. We've got a nice bunch of civilized people, unlike other forums I've been on. So until next week, ( tommorow ) I bid you all fare well.

Im not in the speed challenge animation if its about presentation.

17-07-2005, 07:13 PM
Pikmin, that was my personal opinion. You asked and I answered truthfully. I apologize, but please don't quit on us. It's animation challenge, so your work is truly welcome! You'll see tommorow's theme, and decide if you want to join. Trust me, animation will be key in this.

ok i know Pikmin, its animation challenge BUT...
In my opinion its not right to win someone who send a preview from Max,
someone who worked on premier, combustion, after effects or whatever else... :)

I want to see quality, and if you pass time on presentation, its mean you pass less time on animation. Its animation and only animation. If we vote for someone because of the presentation, thats crap, that not animation session, and if its not animation session, im not going to participe.
I dont want to be rude, sorry, the way I feel about that.

i think its enouph time to make a simple render & some post work ;)

Hey,
I agree with Pikmin, it's about animation, not about presentation. A super mentalRay render doesn't make your animation any better. Maybe people who are not into animation might like it better, but we don't. We see trough it all and check out the animation only, that's what it's about. No dynamics, hdri images, textures or whatever make animation better.
BTW, I think I'm back. I might have fixed my pc :D:D
but I'm still hoping, not sure yet ;)

hello everyone, i'm sorry for not entering this challenge but I had a most exhausting week (it would be too long to expain what happened here) and I completely forgot about it. I'll do my best to be there in the next challenge though.

Well that's a bold statement guys. Saying presentation is for people who are less into animation. I like everything to be polished. That's my way of working.
I'll make animations the way I've learnt and you'll each do them the way you know better. We have a universal voting system so as not to have any issues regarding subjectivity in rating animations. In the end, animation quality is what matters.

thanx anima :haha:
nice animations everyone! (sorry about being out of context, I just havent'h been able to follow the discussion until now)
for the presentation thing, I think we ought to have a bare minimum of presentation (like previews can,t really be acceptable in my opinion because we often cannot se the real details), so a final render might be just the minimum... anything over that should stay out of the judging.

I dont see what this big discussion is about. This is an animation challenge, there for it should be about the animation. So when you vote it should only be fore the animation not the presentation of it. I say you can still make an animation that has a good presentation but you just cant vote for the presentation cause then your killing the whole meaning of the challenge.

if anyone of you has got the Incredibles on DVD (special edition i think) on one of the discs there is a whole series of cockups that happened during its making....improperly skinned rigs and stuff. Even through this....even in test renders you can still see that the quality of the animation is first class.
theres my 2 pence worth.
